I – Organization Summary The engine department holds overall responsibility for the daily operations and maintenance of the engineering, electrical and mechanical divisions of the vessel. Reports to the Chief Engineer. II – Purpose of the Position The 3rd Engineer position is the mid-level position for the licensed engineers onboard the vessel. The position is to learn all aspects of the engineering department and has sufficient knowledge of all equipment onboard the vessel. The position comes with its own responsibilities to ensure all machinery operates efficient and remain well maintained. III – Major Functions and responsibilities 1.

Can organize daily work of engine room personnel. Has a daily meeting with Chief Engineer regarding work items and occurrences. Responsible for the several log books to be kept. In charge lubricating oil and water. Supervises and checks maintenance and repair work by own crew and contractors. Decides if parts have to be renewed or replaced. In major cases, consults Chief Engineer regarding this Monitors and, where necessary, adjusts all vital parameters/settings to obtain/maintain a safe and economical sailing. Is in charge of operation, maintenance and repairs of the machinery assigned to his watch. Orders spare parts for the machinery assigned to his shift in cooperation with the Inventory Specialist and follow up on projects that are postponed due to missing spare parts

Observe and adhere to all company policies and marine regulations

Make timely entries in the logbooks and planned maintenance system as required.
8.
Maintains the validity of all his documents required to perform his profession.
9.
Personally supervise any unusually hazardous work being performed.
10.
Responsible for assessment and development of the engine officers’ and ratings’ skills, abilities, and attitudes of those assigned to their supervision.
11.
Responsible for protecting ship’s property against loss or damage and against irregular or wasteful practices by any member of the engine department. Perform Planned Maintenance in accordance to AMOS-W.

Complete an End of Term report which includes all technical items of significance occurring during the assignment on board.

Read End of Term reports from previous officer and report any significant unsatisfactory conditions to the Chief Engineer Ensure those being supervised are performing their duties in accordance with all safety protocols and using proper safety equipment. Responsible for the maintenance, istration, supervision, and safe operation of assigned machinery, and systems on given watch. Can also perform duties in the capacity of the 3rd Engineer Boilers & Air Compressors, 3rd Engineer EMM, or 3rd Engineer AWWPS. Other Duties as Assigned by the Staff Chief Engineer and Chief Engineer.
IV – Supervision received Close supervision
Work is reviewed at several steps along the way for accuracy by his direct supervisors, which include the 1st and 2nd Engineer.
V – Problem solving and decision making Safety comes always first and the 3rd Engineer makes effective decisions during his work and reports all his finding to his direct supervisor. The position requires engineering problem solving skills. An ability to demonstrate efficient decision making and communicates effective with their supervisor is also needed. VI – Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The 3rd Engineer has received the following knowledge, skills and training: License Engineering Officer of the Watch issued by vessels flag state or recognized by the vessels flag state. Schooling HBO or MBO (Maritime) Officer or equivalent Experience Promotion from within from 4th Engineer Sailed 5-7 years as 2nd or 3rd engineer on deep sea vessels Physical demands Shipboard positions are physically demanding. Must be able to bend, climb, perform repetitive motion, and repetitively heavy lift. Must be able to work varied shifts which can average up to 12 hours per day everyday while on board. Must maintain physical fitness to perform tasks associated with job. VII – Documents and Training required Documents needed prior to boarding: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
