Eternal House
Eternal Throne
Why?
Eternal Kingdom
The Royal Psalms • Royal psalms are psalms that talk about the Davidic king and his kingdom. • They reminded the Israelites of their place in the world and the task that God had called them to. • They describe the ideal King or “Anointed One” (Messiah)
Psalm 2 1. The Nations’ Attack Psalm 2:1-3 (NIV) Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”
Psalm 2 2. The Lord’s Reaction
Psalm 2:4-6 (NIV) The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
Psalm 2 3. The King’s Confidence Psalm 2:7-9 (NIV) I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
Psalm 2 4. The Nations’ Response Psalm 2:10-12 (NIV) Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
The Royal Psalms & Israel • Reminded Israelites of their place and God’s purpose for their lives. • Showed the kings & the people the ideals that they should be living up to. • They were like royal “robes” placed on the king—this was how he was supposed to be.
If you were an Israelite, how would you see yourself in light of the royal psalms?
“The Robes Hung Loose”
The Problem: No Israelite king ever lived up to the expectations expressed in the Royal Psalms.
“The Robes Hung Loose” Solomon Led into idolatry by his wives Asa Failed to trust God in battle
Jehoshaphat Allied with ungodly nations
“The Robes Hung Loose”
The Davidic Covenant has not yet been completely fulfilled.
The Royal Psalms & You
What do royal psalms have to do with us today? OR Who do the royal psalms ultimately have in mind?
The Royal Psalms & You • Like the Israelites, we live under a Davidic King (Jesus) who will one day return to rule the earth. • We will reign with Him (Rev. 5:10) • We must live as His subjects & servants
How?
The Royal Psalms & You Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. – Stop worrying about yourself. – Ask yourself these questions: 1. What is God’s plan for the world? 2. How can I let Him use me in it?
The Bottom Line
A life of worship is a life that is subject to the King. Are you being a loyal servant & subject of King Jesus?
