Technical description Hoist denomination The capacity of the hoist as well as the cage length can be taken from the hoist denomination printed on the sign in the cage. Multiply the first two figures of the denomination by 100 and you have the load capacity in kg. Multiply the figures after the slanting line by 100 and you have the cage length in mm. Example: Scando 20/30. Load capacity 20 x 100 = 2000 kg (4400 lbs). Cage length 30 x 100 = 3000 mm or 3.0 meter (9’-10 1/8’’). A ”C” after the figures indicates that the hoist is provided with a Counterweight. The letters ”FC” indicates that the hoist operates with Variable Frequency Converter (VFC) and is of type high speed. If the hoist is provided with two cages, this is indicated by the Roman numeral II after SCANDO or SCANDO SUPER.

Foundation The foundation is made of a reinforced concrete slab with cast in place brackets for the base frame of the mast. The foundation is cast ”on - site” in accordance with instructions given under ”Preparations before Installation” and ”Foundation” in this Manual.

Ground enclosure The foundation and bottom landing are fully enclosed by wire mesh s attached to base frame of the mast. A ground enclosure for a single cage hoist can be transformed into a twin cage enclosure by adding s. The enclosure is supplied with a mechanically and/or electrically interlocked, vertical sliding gate placed on the entrance side of the ground enclosure. ”Mechanically interlocked” means that the gate is ”locked” mechanically and cannot be opened unless the cage is at the base landing. ”Electrically interlocked” means that the cage will stop at once, if a gate is opened, or will not start unless the gate is closed.

Hoist mast The hoist mast consists of lattice work of steel tubes and angle profiles in sections of 1508 mm (4’-11 3/8’’) length. Each section is provided with one or two precision-cut racks. The sections are bolted together with bolts and nuts. Mast sections are available in two main versions: with one rack for single cage models or with two racks with or without welded counterweight guide rails for twin cage models. A mast section for a single cage hoist can be transformed into a twin cage mast section by adding a rack.

The mast is attached to the stucture and stabilized with special telescoping tie-in assemblies. Mast ties are available in several sizes and adjustable within the minimum and maximum specifications. The mast tie allows for a maximum inclination of ±8° from the horizontal. The hoist mast is provided with top and bottom limit cams. These cams actuate limit swiches attached to the hoist cage, causing it to stop automatically. There is also a final limit switch which cuts off the main power supply, if the normal limit switches fail to function.

Counterweight equipment A hoist provided with a counterweight equipment has a ”C” designated after the figures in the hoist denomination. The counterweight equipment is mainly used to increase the capacity of the hoist without an increase in power consumtion (compare erection load capacity and pay-load capacity in ”Technical Data”).

The counterweight runs on the rear corner tubes of the mast or, on twin cage hoists, on a special guide rail welded or bolted to the side of the mast. The counterweight wire ropes is directed by means of sheaves on top of the mast (cathead) to a wire rope equalizer with a slack rope switch on the cage roof, which stops the hoist if the wire ropes become unbalanced or if the counterweight hangs up.

Cage The cage walls are constructed partially or entirely of wire mesh to allow light in and thereby give the cage operator a clear view of the hoistway. The roof and floor are constructed of plastic coated, fibreglass reinforced high density plywood with a non-skid surface. Floor, roof and partial side walls are also available in lightweight aluminium checkered plate. The cage is guided on the mast by individually adjusted ball bearing guide rollers. Safety hooks are attached to the main frame of the cage under the lowest driving pinion to ensure that the cage is unable to climb off the top of the mast or that the pinion disengages from the rack should a roller fall off. The cage has mechanically and/or electrically interlocked entrance and exit gates. The exit gate is usually made in two parts whereas the enterance gate is one part. (The entrance gate is the one facing the gate of the ground enclosure).

As the cage roof serves as working platform during erection and as a maintenance inspection platform it is provided with a safety railing. There is also a trap door in the roof and a ladder in the cage so that one can easily get up on the roof.

Hoist machinery The hoist machinery unit is attached to the main frame of the cage on vibration dampening brackets. The cage climbs by means of pinions in engagement with the rack. The pinions are fitted to worm-/alt. bevel gears, driven by electric motors.

SCANDO-hoists with electric motor by one, two or three direct starting squirrel cage induction motors, equipped with self adjusting electromagnetic disc brakes. FC-hoist with Variable Frequency Converter ”VFC”, are driven by two or three squirrel cage induction motors equipped with electromagnetic disc brakes. ALIMAK 33540 -1/04

The use of VFC makes it possible to run electric motors at a supersynchronous or subsynchronous speed. The speed of the hoist is straight related to the frequence which is set/or initiated by the control stick. Frequence can be varied from 0 to maximum frequence 60 – 87 Hz depending of type of motor. Due to the frequency modulation at start – from 0 to 87 Hz, the starting current will be as low as 1.2x the rated motor current. With retaradation ramps at the landings and the possibility of "crawling", stop at correct position in level with the landing is obtained. When stopping the VFC will steplessly decrease the frequency down to 0 Hz. That means that the brake only will be used as a parking brake, and therefore the brake wear and maintenance is minimized.

Landing equipment The landing equipment consists of mechanically and/or electrically interlocked wire mesh gates or bars at the landings, preventing ittance to the hoistway. The landings are mounted on vertical pipes parallel to the mast from the ground enclosure to the top landing. The landing equipment can also be attached by connecting them to special brackets at the landings, in openings, on slabs, on projections or facade scaffolding. The electric interlocking of the landing equipment is connected to the control system of the hoist (stop circuit).

Cable guiding systems Cable basket: The hoist trailing power cable is guided by U-shaped guide with plate springs. During operation of the hoist the power cable coils itself out and into a cable basket located in the ground enclosure at the bottom landing.

Cable trolley: To overcome the power cable’s limited tensile strength. The cable is at high lifting heights, fixed firmly to the mast from the bottom landing to a junction box located at the midpoint of the mast.

The trailing power cable from the junction box to the cable on the cage is kept under tension by a cable trolley located under the cage and travelling on the same guide as the cage. This method described above is also used for hoist installations where strong winds, low temperatures, etc. can be expected.

Electric equipment

The electric equipment can be of several different kinds depending on local requirements and regulations. The equipment is also designed and chosen to conform to operating conditions on construction sites. The components have been thoroughly tested and conform to one or several of the following international/national standards: IEC, CEE, EN, DIN, UL, CSA and SS. In order to meet the requirements of the customer and conform to the applicable hoist regulation, and code, the electrical equipment is designed specifically for each order. Necessary documents, such as wiring diagrams, circuit diagrams and parts lists, are placed inside the document box in the cage. ALIMAK 31780 -1/03

Control systems Operator control system The hoist can be operated from inside the hoist cage only. This is done by means of: a push button station with push buttons Up/Stop/Down, or . . . . . . a lever controller Up/Stop/Down. The control lever has spring return to the stopp position (Dean-Handle). As a low-cost option the system can be provided with an electronic proximity swicht, ALIMAK ”Automatic Stop Equipment”. Note that SCANDO SUPER FC is designed for operator control only.

Semi-automatic control system The hoist can be operated from inside the cage by means of push buttons Up/Stop/Down/Stop Next Landing. By pressing a button for Up or Down, the cage starts travelling in the chosen direction. When the cage is approaching the desired landing, the button marked with symbol for Stop Next Landing is pressed. The cage will then stop automatically at that landing. The landings can be provided with a push button box with similar buttons and functions as in the cage.

Optional equipments Automatic Stop Equipment Stopping the cage at right level at the landings can be difficult for people using the hoist infrequently. With Automatic Stop Equipment this very operation is automated. The equipment consists of auxiliary relays and a proximity switch on the cage. The switch is activated by steel plates attached to the mast at the landing.

By pressing the button for the function Stop Next Landing before approaching desired landing the cage automatically stops at level at that landing.

Tone Frequency Equipment ALIMAK hard wire Tone Frequency Equipment (TFE) for Signal Transmission is used for hoist installations where it is desirable to avoid a separate trailing control cable between base and cage. The control signals are instead transferred along the ground wire of the trailing power cable. The Tone Frequency Equipment consists of two units – one transmitter and one receiver. The transmitter is located in the base and the receiver in the main in the cage. The transmitter, in the base , converts the incomming impulses from the landing push buttons into three different signals, A, B and C, corresponding to Up, Stop and Down. These signals are then transferred along the trailing power cable up to the cage. The receiver in the cage picks up the signals and actuates output relays corrensponding to the initial signal A, B or C. Each individual signal consists of a 3-tone sequencial code system which gives extreme insensibility to false or disturbing signals. a 16

Aliphone Communication System Aliphone Communication System with a combined transmitter/ reciver uses the power supply cable for its signals, thereby eliminating a separate communication cable. The signals are transmitted by means of FM technique. The equipment provides two-way communication between the hoist cage and base landing. Communication to the other landings is obtained by adding optional equipment to the base station. The equipment can also be connected to a Paging System. (Announcing Speaker System).

Safety equipment Automatic stop at top and bottom landings At top and bottom landings, limit cams are mounted on the mast. These cams activate the limit switches, which automatically stops the hoist. The functions for the Up and Down limit switches are backed up by a final limit switch with its own cams on the mast at top and bottom landings. This switch cuts the power supply on all phases, and stops the cage should the normal limit switch not function. Below the bottom landing level, close to the hoist mast, buffer springs are located for the cage and counterweight. These buffers are designed to stop a descending cage or counterweight beyond its normal limit of travel.

Safety hook

Safety hooks To prevent the cage from climbing off the mast during erection or dismantling, or to prevent the pinions from disengaging the rack in case a counter roller or guide roller on the cage comes off, safety hooks are mounted on the cage frame. The safety hooks are placed underneath the lowest drive pinion of the machinery, preventing the cage from falling off the mast should the drive pinion run off the top rack.

Safety details on machinery plate On the machinery and safety device plates, heels keep the pinion of the machinery and safety device constantly engaged with the rack on the hoist mast, in case a counter roller or a guide roller on the cage comes off.

Safety device The hoist has a unique safety device which smoothly stops the cage on the mast should normal driving speed be exceeded. The safety device has a shaft with a centrifugal weight and a pinion constantly engaged with the rack on the hoist mast. When the centrifugal weight actuates, the brake cone is screwed in against a brake lining inside the safety housing. The hoist is brought to a smooth stop, and simutaneously the power to the drive motors is cut off. a 21

Phase failure relay The electric equipment is protected by a phase failure relay, which means that the hoist can only be driven when correct phase sequence is connected.

Optional overrun protection device A spring loaded roller fixed at the top of the cage runs on the rear face of the rack. The roller is fixed to a crank, which in turn is connected to an emergency stop wire, controlling the power supply cut-off switch – the standard final limit switch – located in the cage.

When the top of the cage reaches the top mast section, the roller runs off the rack, and lifts the stop wire, which isolates the final limit switch. In effect when the roller runs off the rack, the main supply is cut off and the cage stops immediately.

The emergency stop wire can be used as an emergency stop by erectors working from the roof of the cage.

The purchaser’s/’s own protective measures Protection at landings It is recommended that overhead protection is furnished at landing entrances to protect against falling objects.

Scaffolds and other gangways close to the hoistway and counterweight way Scaffolds and other gangways and platforms close to the hoistway and counterweight way shall be provided to hoistway enclosures according to local regulations.

Illumination of landings The adequate site lighting shall be provided to illuminate the landings over the full height of travel of the hoist.

Landings erected at site Landings built up at site shall be equipped with safety railings and toe guards and shall meet applicable local regulations. Each landing shall be dimensioned for the maximum load of the hoist.

Rope length required = lifting height + 10 meter (33 ft.). The counterweight rope shall comply with the specification marked on the plate of the hoist equipment concerning the breaking load for the rope.

Foundation National hoist regulations indicate whether the hoist is to be installed on a concrete slab or if a foundation pit is required.

Concrete slab A concrete slab is to be made according to the following instructions, and according to the actual model of hoist. It is important that the mounting holes of the foundation frame be brought level with the completed concrete surface, and that the concrete is vibrated thoroughly – especially around the foundation frame. It is also important that the finished surface is plane and horizontal.

Extra reinforcement of concrete slab – for hoist with landing equipment on vertical pipe The concrete slab must have additional reinforcement in order to carry the extra load due to the vertical pipes, landing equipment and the extra load, due to the landings (people, buggies, materials, etc). The extra reinforcement is only necessary within the areas shown in the picture below. The layer of reinforcement should be placed 20 mm (.8 in.) below the upper edge of the slab.

Components for attachments of enclosure Use castings delivered with the hoist. For the attachment of the enclosure on the foundation we recommend the use of expansion bolts. Please note that these items are not furnished with the hoist.

Concrete slab without foundation frame In order to use a concrete slab without a foundation frame, the following requirements must be met: – The procedures/specifications for preparing the concrete slab will be the same ones used for preparing a concrete slab with a foundation frame. – The base frame must be attached with expansion bolts that can each withstand a pullout force of at least 40 kN (9000 lbf). The expansion bolts should be mounted in the holes normally used for attaching the base frame to the foundation frame. – Installation is prohibited when wind speeds are in excess of 15 m/sec. (33 mph). – The maximum height allowed for the first tie is 6 meters (20 ft). – The type of installation must be approved by the local governing authorities.

Transportable foundation In order to use a transportable steel foundation, the following requirements must be met: – The steel foundation must confirm to all of Alimak’s specifications. (these can be ordered separately from an Alimak representative). – The type of installation must be approved by the local governing authorities.

Load on foundation The static load on the foundation consists of: – The payload of the hoist (x 2 – for twin-cage hoist). – Base unit dead weight. Mast ties The design of the hoist determines the type of mast ties to be used. Tie type I The tie is intended only for single cage hoists, with or without counterweight. The tie is available with a main section with two different extension pipe sets. The length of the tie L and the width B are steplessly variable within the ranges (min. – max.) shown by the figures on following page.

Tie type II The tie is intended both for single and for twin cage hoists with or without counterweight. The hoist must, however, be equipped with vertical pipes for the landing equipment. The tie is available with two main sections for 3.0, 3.2 and 3.7 m hoist cage as well as with two different additional parts. h4

Example: Ties for a hoist type SCANDO I 25/32 C provided with vertical pipes shall be chosen as follows. The text ”Mast ties” indicates that ties type I or II may be used. Let us choose type II. The dimension of the hoist cage – SCANDO 25/32 C (cage length 3.2 m) indicates the choice of main frame to type 0398 678-175. Due to the configuration of the structure, the distance between centerline of the mast and the wall is fixed at 3100 mm (122.05”). The dimension 3100 mm (122.05”), shown at the Laxes, in the graph on a previous page, indicates the additional part 0498 679-165 shall be used and that its B-dimension shall be between 1500 mm (59.05”) and 2060 mm (81.10”). Depending on the choice of B-dim., the reaction force P on the face of the building can be calculated by the following formula: P = L x 30000 Newton (x 0.2248 = lbf) B For

The ties are fixed to the building by bolts, washers and nuts into the holes which are drilled at the installation or to embedment sets or other approved suitable wall bracket attachment.

Reinforcement

Cast in place inserts must be installed prior to the hoist installation in order for the concrete to cure properly and attend its proper strength. Concrete must be of suitable strength for calculated loads. (See Reaction force on wall). Care must be taken in locating the inserts at their proper location (See type of tie). If other types of bolt is used like a chemical cast in bolt or expansion bolt, it is important to choose an approved type which can take the calculated force in this application with a satisfactory safety factor. Complete specifications for this kind of bolts can be given by manufacturer and approval for its use in this application by local authority.

Landing run-offs in conjunction with vertical pipes The sum of the vertical pipes’, pipe s’, landing beams’ and landing equipments’ own weight means that the combined payload on the landing run-offs will be reduced with increasing mast height.

The maximum allowable payload on all Lifting height (m) the landings combined is shown on the diagram to the right. The load is understood to be equally distributed on the 100 respective landing run-offs.

NOTE! Complete landing equipment every 3 m. Landing run-off’s own weight = max. 150 kg.

The allowable payload per landing runoff may not exceed the hoists maximum capacity. Example: For a single cage hoist type Scando I 20/32 (cage dimension 1.5 x 3.2) the maximum allowable payload for all the landing run-offs combined is 4800 kg at a 50 m lifting height. The corresponding maximum allowable payload for a SCANDO II 20/32 at 50 m lifting height is 2 x 4800 kg = 9600 kg.

IMPORTANT: Except when loading or unloading the hoist it is adviseable to avoid placing loads on the run-offs to avoid the risk of overloading. The following tables gives maximum overhang and from min. to max. allowed tie distance for each hoist model and type of mast at actual mast height. The values for tie distances vary according to certain regulations and depend mainly on wind speed. Such regulation differ by country. Note that the values in the table for maximum mast height only apply to mast and mast tie. The capacity of the equipment can be reduced by other factors such as voltage drop of the elcable, the power consumption of the motor(s) etc. (See data sheet for each hoist model). IMPORTANT: 1. Following tables are applicable to the ”new mast type” manufactured after January 1987. When combining the ”old type mast” with the ”new type mast”, the free top distance and the tie distance, shall be determined by using the values that are applicable to the ”old type mast”. 2. Where max. allowable tie distance exceeds max. allowable overhang, erection/ dismounting must be made by means of a construction tower crane or similar lifting device.

Preparations before installation To install your rack and pinion hoist/lift as efficiently and safely as possible and at lowest cost, it is important that the following preparations are made before erector is called and installation is started.

Permission Make sure the chosen erection place meets the requirements set out by local authorities for safety and inspection and that their permission, if necessary, to install the hoist/lift has been obtained.

Erection place Prepare the installation site so that electric power, light, lifting equipment and tools are available and there is adequate access for the lift transporter – beware of overhead obstructions. If possible, prepare the casting of ties and landing accessories such as s, bridges and railing. Suitable places for attaching the ties are vaults, balconies or other concrete or steel structures. that these structures must be strong enough to absorb the reaction forces of the ties. All mast sections should be stored on dry firm ground and as close to the erection place as possible.

Foundation Prepare the foundation with parts required for fixing the base frame of the mast. See chapter “Foundation” in the manual Technical Description. IMPORTANT! Make sure before casting the foundation that the measurement between the centre foundation frame and the wall corresponds to the ties to be used.

Delivery check-up Check the delivery against shipping lists and look for transportation damage.

Should there be any damage, report the same to the responsible transportation insurance company within 7 days from the date of arrival of the goods. Other claims should be made to ALIMAK representative within the same period. i3

Arrangement of power supply Direct On Line (DOL) starting of electric motors results in a very high starting current. The current must overcome the resistance in the cables which results in a voltage drop. This voltage drop occurs not only in the trailing cables, but also in the power supply cable installed between the jobsite distribution board and the electric ”B” at the base. The total voltage drop is the sum of the voltage drop in all the cables. The consequence of the voltage drop is a substantial reduction in the output torque from the motor.

In order to avoid starting problems it is of the utmost importance that the main power supply is adequately sized with respect to the starting current and the voltage drop. The following figures should be noticed: – During starting conditions, in the upward direction with rated load, the voltage drop must not exceed 15% of the rated voltage when measuring at the motor terminals. In the Base , the voltage drop at the incoming power supply terminals must not exceed 3% of the rated voltage during the starting conditions. – Once the rated speed is established during upward travel with rated load, the voltage drop must not exceed 5% of the rated voltage when measuring at the motor terminals. In the Base , the incoming power supply voltage should, in practice, not drop at all, i.e. not exceed 1 – 2 % drop.

The 3-phase power supply cable from the jobsite distribution board to the ”B” at the base can be calculated from the formulas below. The formulas are applicable for the most common types of hoists and lifts having 1, 2 or 3 motor drive machinery with DOL-starting at 400V 50Hz and 460V 60Hz and Scando Super with electro hydraulic drive and Y/D (Star/Delta) motor starter. Note If an earth leakage circuit breaker, ELCB, (ground fault circuit breaker) is to be used, the trip-out value should be chosen for equipment protection i.e. 500mA. Use of 30mA ELCB is not recommended as it continuously trips out due to the motor starting current.

Power supply from generator set at jobsite Required generator power It is recommended that the generator supplier is requested to supply a unit which is capable of providing a starting current of A amperés at rated voltage. If this is not possible, the guidelines below can be used. For DOL starting of Alimak hoists and lifts having 1, 2 or 3 drive motors (size 132M, 7.5/8.6 kW) we suggest the following generator sizes: – 1 motor drive size 132M, 7.5 kW (8.6 kW)

70 kVA min.

– 2 motor drive size 132M, 7.5 kW (8.6 kW)

140 kVA min.

– 3 motor drive size 132M, 7.5 kW (8.6 kW)

210 kVA min.

– 1 motor drive Scando Super 45 kW (52 kW) 100 kVA min. It should be noted that the recommended generator sizes are large due to the fact that the DOL starting of the motor(s) draws a large current resulting in a voltage drop which would cause the ors to oscillate on and off. A smaller generator might be used but this can only be established by practical experience related to a specific make and model of the generator set. For VFC (Variable Frequency Converter) operated hoists and lifts the generator size in kVA should be approximately 2 x the installed motor power in kW.

Voltage drop in the power supply Typical symptoms – The hoist/lift will not start with the full rated load. – The brakes will not lift when starting in the Up-direction. – The ors oscillate on and off (”shatter”) when starting with full load in the Up-direction. – The s of the Up and the main ors get damaged. Measures to overcome a voltage drop problem at the jobsite The best method to avoid any voltage drop problem is to make a proper engineering review of the conditions at the job site before installing the hoist/lift. When it is already installed, the remaining options are limited. However, should a situation occur where the power supply seems to be insufficient, it is important to determine whether this depends on the voltage drop in the power supply or something else. Use an instrument to measure the incoming power supply voltage in both the B- at the base and the M- on/in the car. Make the readings during starting conditions in the

Upward direction with rated load in the car. If the voltage drop exceeds the values given above, one or more of the following measures can be taken: 1. Increase the conductor size in the power supply cable from the jobsite distribution board to the B- at base. 2. Increase the conductor size in the trailing power cables between the Base and the car. Due to mechanical and performance reasons, the conductors in the trailing cable should not exceed 10 or 16 mm2. The fixed cable to the junction box at 1/2 lifting height can be increased in size. 3. Reduce the rated load. 4. Install a step-up transformer xxx/690V in the power supply in order to increase the voltage. Note! Motor windings must be adaptable to this higher voltage otherwise the motor must be changed. To give the best possible advantage, the step-up transformer should preferably be located close to the jobsite distribution board. 5. Use some kind of soft start equipment.
