Abstract: Specifications for high-voltage (above 1000 V) expulsion-type distribution-class fuses, fuse cutouts, fuse disconnecting switches, their associated fuse links, disconnecting cutouts, and accessories for these devices are covered. All of these devices are intended for use on alternating current distribution systems. These include open and enclosed types of fuses and fuse cutouts and fuse disconnecting switches, as well as the fuse links of the type used exclusively with these devices; also open-link types of fuses, cutouts and their associated fuse links, open and enclosed types of disconnecting cutouts, fuse s, fuse mountings and fuse hooks of the type used exclusively with distribution-class fuses, fuse cutouts, fuse disconnecting switches and disconnecting cutouts, fuseholders and removable switch blades of the type used exclusively with distribution-class fuse s and mounting brackets used for distribution-class equipment and other accessories. Introduction This introduction is not part of IEEE Std C37.42-2009, IEEE Standard Specifications for High-Voltage (> 1000 V) Expulsion-Type Distribution-Class Fuses, Fuse and Disconnecting Cutouts, Fuse Disconnecting Switches, and Fuse Links, and Accessories Used with These Devices.

This standard is a revision of ANSI C37.42-1996, to bring it up to date and in line with present day requirements for high-voltage fuses, fuse links and fuse disconnecting switches. This standard was previously developed by the NEMA High Voltage Fuse Technical Committee. As of 2003 the responsibility for this standard has been transferred to the IEEE High-Voltage Fuse Subcommittee. Liaison was maintained with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) during the development of the revisions in order to incorporate the latest thinking up to the time of publication. The Switchgear Committee of the IEEE Power & Energy Society has recently sponsored the published standard IEEE Std C37.100.1™-2007 [B6] 1 . Although IEEE Std C37.100.1 is not specifically referenced in this document, any information that may apply to fuse devices has been incorporated. This standard is one of a series of complementary standards covering various types of high-voltage fuses and switches, arranged so that certain standards apply to all devices while other standards provide additional specifications for a particular device. For any device, IEEE Std C37.40™, IEEE Std C37.41™, plus an additional specification standard covering that device, constitute a complete set of standards for the device. In addition, IEEE Std C37.48™ is an application, operation, and maintenance guide for all the devices and IEEE Std C37.48.1™ provides additional guidelines for current-limiting fuses. 1.2 Purpose Standard specifications for the devices covered by this document are necessary to ensure consistent development and application of these devices by manufacturers and s of these devices.

1.3 Background The fuses and fuse cutouts listed in 1.1 are the same as those covered in IEC 60282-2 1 . The open and enclosed types of “distribution” class fuses and fuse cutouts are the same as the class “A” fuses and fuse cutouts covered in that document. However, several minor differences exist in the testing requirements of IEC and IEEE/ANSI. IEEE fuse standards reflect, primarily, applications common in North America and in countries that use electrical systems designed using principles similar to those used in North America. IEC standards tend to rely heavily on practices common in Europe. The differences in test requirements may result in devices tested to IEC that do not meet the requirements of the IEEE/ANSI standards, or vice versa. In the headings and the text of this document there will be some areas where information is included in brackets [ ]. The information in the brackets is a term used in IEC standards that may be similar to the term we are using, a term that is common in some parts of the world, or is a term that has been used previously in ANSI and IEEE standards. Caution is again advised when making comparisons.

1.4 Other devices covered by this standard This standard may also be used for distribution-class devices, which are not of expulsion type or currentlimiting type, wherein the circuit current stops flowing at the circuits’ natural current zero, and the environment within the device prevents the restart of current after the current zero. The manufacturer and the should agree on any specifications or tests performed for these devices.

Specifications for distribution-class open and enclosed fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed disconnecting cutouts, open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches, and open-link fuses and cutouts 3.1 General rating information 3.1.1 Rating information for devices rated for use at a maximum application temperature of 40° C or less The ratings of these devices shall be applicable for the usual service conditions specified in IEEE Std C37.40-2003 (R2009). The ratings are validated as follows: a)

Rated maximum voltage(s), validated by the dielectric and current interrupting design tests specified in 3.3.1 and 3.3.2, respectively.

b)

Rated continuous current, validated by the temperature-rise design tests at the rated continuous current specified in 3.3.6.

Rated symmetrical interrupting [breaking] current, validated by the current interrupting design tests specified in 3.3.2.

d)

Rated short-time withstand currents (momentary, 15-cycle, and 3-second), validated by the design test specified in 3.3.5. These ratings apply only to disconnecting cutouts or other devices where the fuse is fitted with a removable switch blade or fuseholder with a solid link installed. 1) The rated momentary withstand current is the peak value of current that occurs in the first maximum offset current loop of the specified design tests. This rating provides an index of the ability of the device to withstand the electromagnetic forces that occur under maximum shortcircuit conditions. 2) The rated 15-cycle withstand current provides an index of the device’s ability to withstand the electromagnetic forces and the heat that may be generated under these short-circuit conditions. 3) The rated 3-second withstand current provides an index of the device’s ability to withstand the heat that may be generated under long-time short circuit conditions.

e)

Rated lightning impulse withstand voltage [basic impulse insulation level (BIL)], validated by the impulse withstand tests specified in 3.3.1.

f)

Rated power frequency, as specified in 3.2.2 and validated by the design tests specified in C37.412008.

g)

Rated load-break current (for devices equipped with load-breaking provisions), validated by the design tests specified in 3.3.3.

3.1.2 Rating information for devices rated for use at a maximum application temperature above 40 °C, or with other than usual service conditions For service conditions with a maximum application temperature above 40 °C or other conditions that do not meet “usual service conditions” as defined in IEEE C37.40, additional testing to validate the ratings of the device may be required and are subject to agreement between the and manufacturer.

3.2 Preferred ratings and performance requirements 3.2.1 Rated maximum voltage, rated continuous current, rated symmetrical interrupting current, rated short-time withstand currents, X/R ratio, and rated lightning impulse voltage withstand [basic impulse insulation level (BIL)] The preferred rated maximum voltage, rated continuous current, rated symmetrical interrupting current, rated short-time withstand currents, X/R ratio, and rated lightning impulse voltage withstand for these devices shall be as specified in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3. Column 1 in Table 1 and Table 3 and columns 1 and 2 in Table 2 list the preferred maximum voltage ratings that were specified starting with the 1996 revision of this standard. Column 1a in Table 1 and Table 3 and column 1a and 2a in Table 2 list the preferred maximum voltage ratings that were specified prior to the 1996 revision of this standard. Distribution-class open type fuses and fuse cutouts may have a single-voltage rating or a slant-voltage rating (multiple-voltage rating). It may be noted that Table 4 and Table 5 also list the present preferred, and older preferred, voltage ratings in a similar manner to those listed in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3. The voltages specified starting with the 1996 revision are slightly higher than those specified previously and were changed to standardize them with other fuse products. However, while the preferred ratings changed, the devices are normally applied on the same systems as the equivalent devices prior to the 1996 revision. Application information and selection guidance for these devices is presented in IEEE Std C37.48.

The X/R values listed in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3 are the values used for the high current interrupting tests. See the tables in Clause 6 of IEEE Std C37.41 for the X/R values used for the tests performed at lower currents. The identifying color (color coding) specified in 3.5.1 and the terminal sizes specified in 3.5.6 listed in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3 are construction requirements and are not ratings. 3.2.2 Rated power frequency The preferred rated frequencies for devices covered by this standard are 50 Hz, 60 Hz, and 50/60 Hz. 3.2.3 Rated load-break current for distribution-class load-break fuses, open fuse cutouts, fuse disconnecting switches and open disconnecting cutouts Rated load-break current for open type disconnecting cutouts equipped with load break means: The rated load-break current for open disconnecting cutouts equipped with a load break means shall be a minimum of the rated continuous current as specified in column 10 of Table 2. Rated load-break current for open type fuses, open type fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches equipped with a load break means: The rated load-break current for these devices shall be a minimum of the rated continuous current as specified in column 7 of Table 2. The rated load-break currents for open fuses, open fuse cutouts, and open fuse disconnecting switches may need to be higher than those listed in column 7 of Table 2 since some fuses are used at higher currents than their assigned continuous current rating during periods of overloading. In this case, the load-break rating shall be the maximum current the specific fuse or fuse cutout can carry without melting the fusible element of the maximum fuse link that can be used in the device.




3.2.4 Rated Maximum Application Temperature [Rated Maximum Reference Ambient Temperature] The rated maximum application temperature (rated maximum reference ambient temperature) for devices covered by this standard is the maximum ambient temperature at which the device is suitable for use. The device must be capable of withstanding this temperature without any deterioration that would inhibit its ability to properly interrupt the circuit. The minimum rating allowable is 40 °C. The rated maximum application temperature of the device in degrees C shall be preferably selected from the R20 series of preferred numbers (typically 40, 45, 50, 56, 63, 71, etc.). The R20 series comprises the numbers 1, 1.12, 1.25, 1.40, 1.60, 1.80, 2.00, 2.24, 2.50, 2.80, 3.15, 3.55, 4.00, 4.50, 5.00, 5.60, 6.3, 7.10, 8.00, 9.00, and their multiples of 10. 3.2.5 Performance requirements The preferred performance requirements of open and enclosed distribution-class fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed disconnecting cutouts, open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches, and open-link type fuses and cutouts shall include: a)

Power-frequency dry-withstand voltages as specified in 3.3.1

b)

Lightning impulse withstand voltages as specified in 3.3.1

c)

Power-frequency wet-withstand voltages as specified in 3.3.1

d)

Temperature-rise limitations as specified in 3.3.6

e)

Radio-influence levels as specified in 3.3.4

3.2.6 Ratings and performance requirements other than preferred The ratings and performance requirements specified in 3.2.5 represent the preferred values and requirements. Special circuit or environmental conditions may require devices with ratings or performance requirements that are different from the preferred values and requirements specified above. For these devices the ratings and the performance requirements shall be agreed upon by the and the manufacturer and additional testing may be required to validate that the device is suitable for the intended application.

3.3 Design test requirements 3.3.1 Dielectric tests All devices covered by this standard shall be capable of withstanding the test voltages specified in Table 4 when tested as specified in Clause 5 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008. The number of tests required is as follows: a)

For all types of fuses, fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches the tests shall be made on three devices equipped with any size fuse link or refill unit

b)

For all disconnecting cutouts or other devices equipped with a switch blade or switch link the tests shall be made on three devices with the disconnecting blade or switch link recommended for the device

3.3.2 Interrupting [breaking] tests Distribution-class open and enclosed fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed disconnecting switches, open-links used in open-link cutouts, and open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches when tested as specified in Clause 6 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008 shall be capable of interrupting all currents from low current up to and including the rated interrupting current of the device, with any degree of asymmetry associated with the specified X/R ratio. Low current is the current that will melt the fusible element of the device in the long-time range (300 seconds minimum). Devices that use the replaceable universal fuse links specified in Clause 4, or similar fuse links, shall be capable of interrupting these currents with any type and size fuse link recommended by the manufacturer. Universal fuse links are mainly used in combination with distribution-class open, enclosed, and open-link fuses, fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches. Interrupting requirements specified in this standard cover a specific combination of these components and other combinations cannot be implied from these tests. 3.3.3 Load-break tests for load-break fuses and cutouts Load-break tests (for devices equipped with load-break provisions), when tested as specified in Clause 7 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008, shall be capable of interrupting all load currents up to the specific device’s assigned rated load-break current. Devices that have a rating for breaking capacitive load current shall be capable of interrupting all capacitive load currents up to its assigned rated capacitive load-break current. If the load breaking means involves breaking of the fuse link, the device shall be capable of interrupting all currents that the fuse link can carry without melting and with any size or type of fuse link recommended by the manufacturer of the load-breaking device.




3.3.4 Radio-influence voltage tests All devices covered by this standard, when new and clean and when tested at the point of manufacture as specified in Clause 8 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008, shall be capable of meeting the limits of radio-influence voltage at the test voltage specified in Table 5. Typically, distribution-class devices are designed and tested so that they may be applied either to service loads that are connected phase-to-ground or in the line for three-phase applications. This is reflected in the interrupting test procedures and generally in the radio-influence test procedures. Presently there are no known distribution systems where the 27 kV or the 38 kV devices can be applied for the servicing of lineto-ground loads at their rated maximum voltage. This is reflected in the radio-influence test voltage for these devices. Should higher voltage distribution systems become available in the future, the radio test voltages should then be in accordance with the last sentence in Table 5 note c). For rated maximum voltages of 2.6 kV through 23.0 kV, the test voltages are based on the possibility of the fuse being used to protect loads that are connected line to ground at the devices rated maximum voltage. For rated maximum voltages of 27.0 kV through 38.0 kV, the test voltages are based on line-to-line applications with voltages equal to or less than the devices rated maximum voltage. If these devices are applied to protect line-to-ground loads, the system voltage should be less than 23.0 kV. If the device is designed to be applied to protect line-to-ground applications at its rated maximum voltage, the test voltage shall be 1.05 times the rated maximum voltage.

3.3.5 Short-time current tests for disconnecting cutouts Distribution-class disconnecting cutouts equipped with a blade designed for the disconnecting cutout or a blade recommended by the manufacturer shall carry the rated short-time currents as specified in columns 12, 13, and 14 of Table 1 and columns 11, 12, and 13 of Table 2, when tested as specified in IEEE Std C37.41-2008. Other distribution-class devices that can accept a blade designed for it, a blade recommended by the manufacturer, or a switch link designed for it or recommended by the manufacturer shall also be tested per this requirement. 3.3.6 Temperature-rise tests All devices covered by this standard when tested as specified in Clause 11 of IEEE Std 37.41, shall not exceed the temperature rise and total temperature values specified in Table 2 of IEEE Std 37.40 when the device is carrying rated continuous current and the test’s ambient temperature is within the allowable range specified. that is used in the device being tested. Disconnecting cutouts or other devices equipped with a switch blade shall be tested with a disconnecting blade designed for the device or a blade recommended by the manufacturer. 3.3.7 Expendable cap, static relief pressure tests Expendable caps, when tested as specified in Clause 14 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008, shall be capable of withstanding an internal pressure without expelling the pressure-responsive section up to the minimum value of static relief pressure specified in 3.5.2. The section shall be expelled prior to the maximum static relief pressure specified in 3.5.2. 3.3.8 Manual-operation, thermal-cycle, and bolt-torque tests All devices covered by this standard shall be capable of withstanding the appropriate manual-operation, thermal-cycle, and bolt-torque tests specified in Clause 12 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008.

3.4 Conformance test requirements Conformance tests, as defined in 3.3 of IEEE Std C37.40-2003 (R2009), shall consist of a power-frequency dry-withstand voltage test. The test shall be conducted as specified in Clause 5 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008.

3.5 Construction requirements 3.5.1 Color-coding for enclosed cutouts Color-coding is not a requirement for compliance to this standard, however, when color-coding is applied to distribution enclosed cutouts, the following shall apply: a)

The colors shall be as specified in columns 9 and 15 of Table 1

b)

The color-coding shall be a minimum of 1.61 square cm (½ square inch) in area, located so as to be readily visible from the ground when in front of the enclosed cutout

3.5.2 Expendable caps for 100 A and 200 A open cutouts Expendable caps for 100 A and 200 A expendable cap open cutouts shall meet the requirements in Table 6.

3.5.3 Fuseholder dimensions The dimensions of a fuseholder for distribution open or enclosed fuses, fuse cutouts, or fuse disconnecting switches shall be such that a fuse link of the corresponding rating, having the dimensions specified in 4.4, will be accommodated. 3.5.4 Mounting bracket The arrangements and dimensions of brackets for crossarm, pole, or wall mounting shall be as follows: a)

Type-A brackets shall be in accordance with Figure 1 (see 3.5.4.6 for application)

b)

Type-B brackets shall be in accordance with Figure 2 (see 3.5.4.6 for application)

The brackets furnished under these specifications shall conform in all respects to the requirements hereinafter stated. 3.5.4.1 Material a)

The strength of part 1 of the mounting bracket shall be determined by clamping the long leg of the member to a rigid by 38 -inch carriage bolts with the short leg at the top. A downward force shall be applied along the axis of the ½ × 1½ inch carriage bolt parallel to the longer leg and in the direction of the longer leg of the member under test. A load of 4.5 kN (100 pounds) shall be applied and then removed to take up any slack in the mounting arrangement before the measurement of position is taken. The permanent set measured at the axis of the ½ × 1½-inch carriage bolt shall not exceed 1.6 mm ( 116 inch) when the following load is applied and removed: type-A bracket, 23.4 kN (525 pounds); type-B bracket, 41.8 kN (940 pounds). b)

Bolts—Bolts shall be made from open-hearth carbon steel of a quality to meet the requirements herein listed. If hot-headed, bolts shall be made from hot-rolled carbon steel bars in accordance with grades 1020 to 1025, inclusive, of ASTM A575-89. Bolts, if cold-headed, shall be made from carbon steel cold-heading wire, AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) grade 1010 to 1020, inclusive.

c)

Nuts—Nuts shall be made from hot-rolled, open-hearth carbon steel bars, AISI grades 1108 to 1120, inclusive, of a quality suitable to meet the requirements herein listed.

d)

Strength of bolts and nuts—The heads, threads, and nuts shall develop the body strength of the bolts. The strength of the 38 -inch bolts shall in no case be less than 4200 pounds, and the strength of the ½-inch bolts no less than 342.5 kN (7700 pounds). The unthreaded portion shall be capable of being bent cold at any point through an angle of 180 degree about a diameter equal to the diameter of the bolt without cracking the steel on the outside of the bent portion.

e)

Round washers—Round washers shall be made of a commercial grade of open-hearth steel or wrought iron.

f)

External-tooth lockwashers—External-tooth lockwashers shall be made of steel lockwasher stock.

g)

Split lockwashers—Split lockwashers shall be made of steel or silicon bronze.

3.5.4.2 Dimensions a)

Parts 1 and 2—Parts 1 and 2 of the type-A bracket shall be in accordance with Figure 1. Parts 1 and 2 for the type-B bracket shall be in accordance with Figure 2. Dimensions do not cover galvanizing, but parts shall fit together after galvanizing.

b)

Bolts—The bolt length shall be measured from the underside of the head to the end of the bolt. For part 3 on Figure 1 and Figure 2, the bolts shall be 3 8 × 5-inch carriage bolts. The minimum diameter of the unthreaded portion before galvanizing shall be 8.2 mm (0.322 inch). The head shall be in accordance with Table 1 of ANSI/ASME B18.5. The threaded portion shall be 44.5 mm ( 1 3 4 inch) long and shall be machine rolled or cut. Threads, before galvanizing, shall be in accordance with class 2A, external, and class 2B, internal, threads of ANSI/ASME B1.1. For part 4 on Figure 1 and Figure 2, the carriage bolt to be held captive in part 1 shall be ½ × 1½ inch and have at least a 28.6 mm ( 1 18 inch) full thread with 13 threads per inch. Other specifications for threads and the head shall be the same as in the preceding paragraph.

c)

Nuts—Nuts for the two 3 8 × 5 inch carriage bolts shall be square, and for the ½ × 1½-inch captive bolts, hexagon. They shall be in accordance with the tables for regular square nuts and regular hexagon and hexagon-jam nuts of ANSI/ASME B18.2.2. Nuts shall be tapped oversize to a proper fit for the bolt so that after galvanizing the nut can be run the entire length of the thread with the fingers, without undue forcing. There shall be no unnecessary looseness between the nut and bolt.




d)

Round washers—Round washers for 3 8 -inch carriage bolts shall have the following minimum dimension: 25.4 mm (1 inch) outside diameters, 10.3 mm ( 13 32 inch) hole diameter, 1.6 mm ( 116 inch) thickness.

e)

External-tooth lockwashers—External-tooth lockwashers, part 5, shall have the following dimensions: commercial thickness, 16 gauge (minimum 1.4 mm (0.055 inch)); nominal inside diameter, 13.5 mm ( 17 32 inch); nominal outside diameter, 34.9 mm ( 1 3 8 inch).

3.5.4.3 Galvanizing Parts 1 and 2—bolts, nuts, and washers of parts 3 and 4; and the external-tooth lockwasher of part 5 shall be hot galvanized in accordance with ASTM A153-82. 3.5.4.4 Finish a)

Parts 1 and 2—Parts 1 and 2 shall be correctly formed and not cracked or otherwise defective.

b)

Bolts and Nuts—Bolts of parts 3 and 4 shall be free from badly formed, mitred, cracked, or otherwise defective heads. The threaded end shall preferably be chamfered or rounded. Nuts shall be symmetrically formed with the holes centrally located and the bearing surface at right angles (tolerance, 3°) to the axis of the hole.

3.5.4.5 Tests for mounting brackets a)

Design tests—The manufacturer shall make such design tests on mounting brackets as will ensure conformity with the specifications for strength and ability to meet the requirement relative to permanent set of part 1.

b)

Routine tests—The manufacturer shall make such routine tests on mounting brackets as deemed necessary to ensure uniformity of the product.

c)

Conformance tests—Conformance tests on mounting brackets shall be the manufacturer’s routine tests on mounting brackets unless otherwise specified and arranged for between the manufacturer and the purchaser. When conformance tests are to be made in the presence of a purchaser’s representative, they shall be arranged for between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

3.5.4.6 Application of mounting brackets a)

Type-A brackets—Type-A brackets shall be used with 5.2 kV to 5.5 kV and 7.8 kV to 8.3 kV open and enclosed distribution-class fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed disconnecting cutouts, and open and enclosed disconnecting switches for crossarm and pole mounting. They should also be used with 7.8 kV to 8.3 kV, 15.0 kV to 15.5 kV, and 18.0 kV to 23.0 kV open-link distributionclass fuses and cutouts for crossarm and pole applications.

b)

Type-B brackets—Type-B brackets shall be used with 15.0 kV to 15.5 kV, 27.0 kV, and 38.0 kV open distribution-class fuses and cutouts for crossarm and pole application.

Other distribution devices also use these brackets. Their use will be covered by other standards or by the manufacturer’s literature.

3.5.5 Mounting strap [mounting hardware] The mounting strap for the devices listed in a) and b) shall be of dimensions suitable to provide for mounting the device on the mounting bracket described in 3.5.4. 3.5.7 Switch stick (switch hook) for use with distribution-class fuses and cutouts Switch sticks for use with distribution-class devices covered by this standard shall be constructed to meet the dimensions of the head or hook shown in Figure 3. The stick shall be 1.22, 1.83, 2.44, 3.05, or 3.66 meters (4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 feet) in length. The material used in the head or hook shall provide a minimum yield strength of 138 MPa (20 000 psi). This device can also be used for other equipment besides the devices covered by this standard.

3.6.5 Additional Information Fuses may be designed for use at 50 Hz, 60 Hz, or both frequencies. Information on the suitability of fuses for a particular frequency is typically contained in the manufacturer’s literature. If there is a difference in rated performance between a system frequency of 50 Hz and 60 Hz, the rating information at each frequency, or the only permissible frequency, shall be published in the manufacturer’s literature. It is recommended that any packaging that may be used by the consumer for storage purposes be labeled so the contents can be easily and properly identified.

3.7 Application, operation, and maintenance guidelines See ANSI/IEEE Std C37.48.




4. Specifications for universal fuse links for distribution-class open and enclosed fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches, and open-link fuses and cutouts Universal fuse links are defined in IEEE Std C37.40-2003 (R2009) as fuse links that provide for mechanical interchangeability and, for some types, limited time-current-characteristic interchangeability. Universal fuse links are applied in combination with distribution-class open and enclosed fuses and fuse cutouts, open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches, and open-link fuses and cutouts as specified in Clause 3. Requirements specified in this standard cover a specific combination of a fuse, fuse cutout or fuse disconnecting switch and a specific type of fuse link that was used for the testing of this combination. The performance of other combinations cannot be implied from these tests.

4.1 General rating information 4.1.1 Rating information for devices rated for use at a maximum application temperature of 40 °C or less The ratings of universal fuse links shall be applicable for service conditions specified in 3.1.1 of IEEE Std C37.40-2003 (R2009). The ratings are validated as follows: a)

Rated continuous current, validated by the temperature-rise design tests specified in 4.3.1 and the time-current-characteristic requirements specified in 4.4.

b)

Rated maximum voltage, when applicable, is validated by interrupting tests in a fuse, fuse cutout, or fuse disconnecting switch of the same manufacturer as the fuse links or a fuse link recommended by the manufacturer of the fuse, fuse cutout or fuse disconnecting switch, performed to determine the highest voltage rating of fuse or fuse cutout where the fuse link is capable of properly interrupting or aiding in the interruption. Interrupting tests for devices that use replaceable fuse links are specified in 3.3.2. Mechanical interchangeability requirements for these voltage ratings are specified in 4.5.1 for open and enclosed fuses and fuse cutouts and open and enclosed fuse disconnecting switches and in 4.5.2 for open-link fuses and fuse cutouts.

c)

Rated symmetrical interrupting [breaking] current, only for open-link fuse links, is validated by design tests in an open-link fuse or cutout of the same manufacturer as the fuse links or as recommended by the manufacturer of the fuse links. The tests shall be carried out as specified in Clause 6 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008.

4.1.2 Rating information for devices rated for use at a maximum application temperatures above 40 °C For service conditions specified in 3.1.2 or 3.2 of IEEE Std C37.40-2003 (R2009), additional testing to validate the ratings of the device may be required and are subject to agreement between the and manufacturer.

4.2 Preferred ratings and performance requirements 4.2.1 Rated continuous current The preferred values of rated continuous current for fuse links covered by this standard shall be: a)

4.2.2 Rated voltage 4.2.2.1 Universal fuse links for open and enclosed type fuses, fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches Universal fuse links for open and enclosed type fuses, fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches do not have a voltage rating independent of a specific device. The fuse link may be voltage sensitive; however it is the combination that is required to operate properly from the lowest interrupting current to the maximum interrupting rating of the device. As a result, universal fuse links do not typically have a voltage rating. When applying any fuse link in a fuse, fuse cutout or fuse disconnecting switch from a different manufacturer or with a different voltage rating, proper operation cannot be assumed. Universal fuse links have been tested with a specific voltage rated device and given a maximum voltage rating by the fuse, fuse cutout, or fuse disconnecting switch manufacturer. When applying a fuse link in a device from a different manufacturer or different rating, proper operation cannot be assumed. 4.2.2.2 Open-link universal fuse links The preferred values of rated voltage for open-link universal fuse links are the same as those for the openlink type fuses and cutouts as shown in Table 3. 4.2.3 Rated interrupting current The preferred values of rated symmetrical interrupting current for open-link fuse links are specified in Table 3. Fuse links that are used in distribution-class open and enclosed type fuses, fuse cutouts, and fuse disconnecting switches do not have a rated interrupting current since it is a characteristic of the combination of the fuse link and the fuse, fuse cutout, or fuse disconnecting switch that was tested. 4.2.4 Performance requirements The preferred performance requirements of distribution-class fuse links for use in distribution-class open, enclosed, and open-link fuses, and fuse cutouts shall include: a)

Minimum melting [pre-arcing] time-current characteristics specified in 4.3 and determined as specified in 4.3.2.

b)

Total clearing-time-current characteristics, determined as specified in 4.3.2.

NOTE—These time-current characteristics shall be presented as curves as specified in Clause 11 of ANSI/IEEE C37.41-2008.




4.3 Design test requirements 4.3.1 Temperature-rise tests Universal fuse links, after carrying their rated continuous current in the devices they are designed to be used in, when tested as specified in Clause 10 of ANSI/IEEE Std C37.41-2008, shall not cause the temperature rise of the device to exceed the limits specified in 3.3.6. 4.3.2 Time-current tests The minimum melting and total clearing time-current curves for universal fuse links shall be determined by the tests specified in Clause 11 of IEEE Std C37.41-2008. Test results shall meet the accuracy requirements specified in 4.4.3.

4.4 Time-current-characteristic requirements 4.4.1 Melting time-current characteristics for universal fuse links To comply with this standard, universal fuse links are not required to meet any particular time-current characteristic. These fuse links shall comply with all the requirements of Clause 4 of this standard except those specific to K and T fuse links and as specified in Table 8 and Table 9. The ratings and/or time-current characteristics for fuse links other than the K and T types often provide desirable properties for specific applications. 4.4.2 Melting time-current characteristics for K and T type universal fuse links Some fuse links have been designed to comply with the melting characteristics that have been designated as “K” or “T” in this standard. The melting-time-current characteristics for K and T type fuse links shall meet the minimum and maximum current values required to melt the fuse link at the three time points designated in Table 8 and Table 9 and as follows: a)

Other than with respect to the above time-current characteristics, the assignment of a “K” or “T” rating to a fuse link does not make any particular “K” or “T” link interchangeable with any other particular fuse link having this rating, since its ability to aid in the interrupting process may or may not vary between various designs. 4.4.3 Accuracy The minimum melting-current characteristics for any K or T fuse link shall be not less than the minimum values specified in Table 8 and Table 9. The minimum melting-current characteristics plus manufacturing tolerances for any K or T fuse link shall not be greater than the maximum values specified in Table 8 and

4.5.1.4 Bending requirements of flexible conductor (fuse link leader) The fuse link flexible conductor should bend readily when installed and during operation so as not to interfere with the proper functioning of the device. It should be cautioned however that if the conductor is too flexible, it may also interfere with the proper operation of the device. 4.5.1.5 Maximum thickness of flexible conductor (fuse link leader) To ensure proper clamping of the fuse links, the maximum thickness of the flexible conductor shall not exceed the values in Table 12. The fuse link shall be provided with flexible conductors at each end, each conductor terminating in buttons that are at least 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) in diameter and adapted with rings for installing the fuse link and removing it from the fuse . 4.5.2.2 Length The length of the fuse link between buttons shall be as specified in Table 13.
