Purpose This document describes how Services technicians (not ITS Help Desk) can recover data from a failed hard drive encrypted with McAfee Drive Encryption. Difficulty Level Intermediate - familiar with creating and booting from USB recovery media. Prerequisites Active Directory Security Group hip for ePO: o ITS_McAfee_HelpDesk o ITS_McAfee_Staf o ITS McAfee ServerStaf Windows-based computer Connection to the Internet McAfee Drive Encryption client 6-digit unit code from the computer’s asset tag (barcode) Procedure 1. If you do not have copies, create bootable USB recovery drives. 1. Obtain three blank or empty / erasable USB flash drives. Connect the first to your computer. Note the drive letter assigned to the drive. 2. Format the drive as FAT32. 3. Copy the folder \\rtpwrep03\dtg\Public\McAfee\Windows\DE Disaster Recovery\Standalone to your Desktop. 4. Click Start -> Run. Type cmd. Right click cmd.exe and click Run As . 5. At the command prompt, type cd %profile%\desktop\standalone 6. Type bootdisk.exe EETech.RTB
: 7. When complete, eject and remove the flash drive. 8. Connect the second flash drive. 9. Repeat steps 1.2 – 1.7 - with the following modifications: 1. At 1.6, type bootdisk.exe EEOpalTech.RTB
: 10. Label the flash drives for future use, EETech and EEOpalTech. 11. Repeat step 2 with a third flash drive. 12. In Windows Explorer, create the directory structure \EFI\Boot on the USB memory stick. 13. In Windows Explorer, copy and rename files from the Standalone folder on your Desktop to
:\EFI\Boot as follows: 1. EpeTechEfi32.efi -> BootIA32.efi 2. EpeTechEfi.efi -> BootX64.efi 14. Label this drive EETech UEFI. 2. Obtain the recovery file (this may not be used, but is worth having on hand): 1. At a workstation, insert the bootable flash drive you intend to use. 2. In a web browser, go to https://rtpwepo01.rti.ns:8443. 3. with your RTI domain credentials (rti\name, domain ) 4. Click the site navigator menu

6. Click [OK]. 7. Right click the link and save the target file to the flash drive. 8. Eject and remove the flash drive from the workstation. Boot the target computer from the appropriate disk. 1. Older Windows 7 machines will almost always use a BIOS disk. 2. Windows 10 machines will almost always use the UEFI disk. Authenticate: 1. Under Authentication, click Token. 2. A logon page prompts you to enter the Drive Encryption credentials for the system. Enter the owner’s credentials or your own technician credentials. Authentication Status changes to Authenticated with Token. OR 3. If token authentication fails (possible due to preboot filesystem corruption), under Authentication, click File. 4. Browse the USB flash drive and select the Recovery Information File exported and saved earlier. Authentication status changes to Authenticated with File. Authorize: 1. On another workstation, click Start -> Run. 2. Enter \\rtpwrep03\dtg\Public\McAfee\Windows\DE Disaster Recovery\EETechCode.exe <Enter> 3. Note the code number for today’s date. 4. On the target computer, under Authorization, click Authorize. 5. Enter the number obtained from the EETechCode program. 6. The Authorization status changes to Authorized. Click Remove to begin the decryption process.

Appendix: Certain operations may require the use of Windows PE based recovery disks. These are advanced, and likely require working with McAfee . The procedure to create them is below. 1. If you do not have copies, create bootable USB recovery drives. 1. Obtain two blank or empty / erasable USB flash drives. Connect the first to your computer. 2. Rufus (a bootable USB drive creation tool). 3. Find rufus-2.11.exe in your s folder. 4. Open Rufus by double clicking rufus-2.11.exe. 5. Click the disk icon to select an ISO image.
6. In the File Name field, enter \\rtpwrep03\dtg\Public\McAfee\Windows\DE Disaster Recovery\WinPE\DETech_BIOS_Win7.iso 7. In the New Volume Label field, enter: DETECH 8. In the Partition Scheme field, select MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI-CSM. 9. In the Device field, ensure the target flash drive is selected.
