to the University of Notre Dame
Welcome
The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. This Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers began in and is today a major international order serving societies and individuals through higher education, missionary work, and the staffing of parishes. Notre Dame was chartered by the State of Indiana in 1844. It was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious Trustees and Fellows. The University holds firmly to its Catholic identity and mission, and its statutes require that the president of the University be a Holy Cross priest. Notre Dame is truly an international university, with its student body of approximately 8,500 undergraduates and 3,700 graduate students drawn from all 50 states and some 90 countries. This is a residential university, with 80 percent of undergraduates living on campus in single-sex residence halls. Also in residence on campus is a community of priests and brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross, engaging in teaching, research, and a range of collaboration with people to enrich the worlds of academe and everyday life, educating both the mind and the heart. The priests live primarily in Corby Hall and Moreau Seminary, but of Holy Cross and other religious orders live at the residence halls, often serving as rectors. The campus is designed primarily for pedestrians, encouraging safety and community spirit, so vehicle access is limited and monitored. Notre Dame’s faculty exceeds 1,100. These are among the finest scholars, researchers, and teachers in the world. Their vibrant contributions to the life of the mind and to human culture are supplemented by professional specialists, research fellows, librarians, and s. This is one of America’s leading undergraduate teaching institutions and is growing as the preeminent Catholic research university. The University has more than 135,000 alumni, many of whom participate in a worldwide network of Notre Dame clubs. Many of these alumni also come back to campus throughout their lives for reunions, football weekends, spiritual milestones such as weddings and baptisms, and for other reasons tied to the Notre Dame family. About one-quarter of undergraduate students are “legacy” students whose parent(s) attended the University.

WALKING TOURS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR FOR THE SPIRIT. There is an element of spiritual pilgrimage for many visitors to Notre Dame. One way to tour some of the principal places for prayer and reflection is to start at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and to make a small loop that leads eventually to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes by St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Lakes. • IN THE BASILICA, ask ushers about available tours, times of religious services, and hours for access to the museum. On your own, you’ll see many inspiring statues, relics, religious items, and, of course, exquisite artwork on the ceilings, in the stained glass windows, and more. Masses and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are offered daily. Please respect the quiet and dignity of this special place of worship. • FROM THE BASILICA go to the Main Building, with the statue of the Blessed Mother standing atop the Golden Dome. Here, you’ll also see the series of classic murals of Christopher Columbus, the historical records of the Laetare Medal annually honoring outstanding Catholics, and the murals underneath the Dome with ethereal figures depicting religion, arts, and sciences. • PROCEED SOUTH from the Main Building to walk briefly toward the University’s main entrance, ing the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, facing the Golden Dome with hands outstretched, and the statue of bearded University founder Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., facing outward to the world. • THEN RETURN toward the Basilica’s front doors, but turn left. You will first see on your right a statue of Saint Jude and then Corby Hall, the home of the campus community of Holy Cross priests and brothers. A famous statue depicts former University President Rev. William Corby, C.S.C., offering absolution to the Union Army as their chaplain at the Battle of Gettysburg. • NOW PROCEED BEHIND Corby Hall and walk to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a wonderful setting of lit candles and constant visitors bringing prayer and petitions. This beloved landmark is made all the more inspiring by the proximity of St. Mary’s Lake and St. Joseph’s Lake. You can close your tour by walking to (and around) these tranquil lakes.
A SELF-GUIDED TOUR FOR THE SPORTS FAN. Notre Dame’s facilities for student-athletes are among the most modern and comprehensive for those involved in nearly every sport. • START your tour at Notre Dame Stadium, opened in 1930, where the celebration of tradition grows every season with the addition of statues or banners and with collective memories of great sports legends, other heroes of the University, and tributes to patriotism and community. Guided tours of the stadium are available. For more information, visit the Murnane Family Ticket Office located inside the main entrance of Purcell Pavilion, or visit und.com/tours. • JUST EAST OF THE STADIUM is the Joyce Center, whose “double bubble” domes cover a basketball arena and a “fieldhouse” suitable to various sports and events. The domes are connected by a concourse that includes a Sports Heritage Hall with a large collection of Notre Dame sports memorabilia. The Rolfs Aquatic Center is a water-sports venue adjacent to the Joyce Center. • KEEP WALKING EAST beyond the Joyce Center to see a vast area where new facilities for soccer, track, softball, lacrosse, and other sports have sprung up in recent years. These venues demonstrate Notre Dame’s commitment to men and women student-athletes in a full range of varsity sports who combine academic excellence with a commitment to “play like a champion today.” • JUST NORTH of this complex of outdoor athletic facilities is the Guglielmino Family Athletics Center (the Gug, or “goog”), opened in 2005. Much of its space is dedicated to Fighting Irish football, including coaches’ offices and team locker rooms. But the complex also includes an advanced sports medicine section and conditioning/weight room areas for all student-athletes. Next door, the Loftus Sports Center contains an indoor football field and more. • ACROSS THE STREET to the west of the Gug is the Rolfs Sports Recreation Center where all students, whether or not they are varsity athletes, can staff and faculty in using a range of the finest equipment, plus the guidance of skilled trainers, for their exercise and fitness. • YOU CAN END your tour here or start a trek across campus. First, head north from Rolfs and see, near the Jordan Hall of Science, the Band Building and Pasquerilla Center, the home of Notre Dame’s ROTC programs. From there, head west toward the Rockne Memorial recreation center, which sits near St. Mary’s Lake.
