Historical Notes I

Fondata nel 1960 dal Cav. Giuseppe Pietta, la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta iniziò il suo cammino nel mondo dei fabbricanti di armi producendo fucili da caccia quali giustapposti e sovrapposti. In risposta alla grande domanda che provenne dagli Stati Uniti d’America, il Cav. Giuseppe Pietta indirizzò la produzione della sua azienda verso la riproduzione delle armi della Guerra di Secessione americana. Nel 1964 iniziò quindi il suo sviluppo e nel corso degli anni si affermò e conquistò il suo posto in un mercato veramente difficile: quello delle repliche di armi storiche. Il modello 1851 Navy fu il primo che venne richiesto; in breve si aggiunsero la 1860 Army, la 1858 New Model Army, la LeMat e così via. Nel 2002, la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta decise di introdurre nella sua ormai vastissima gamma di repliche del vecchio west, la più

famosa rivoltella conosciuta ai giorni nostri: la 1873 mod. Pietta Single Action. Costata molto lavoro a livello umano, venne presentata al mercato americano e ai tiratori del Cowboy Shooting Action nel settembre del 2002. Durante la prima Convention della SASS®, Single Action Shooting Society®, tenutasi a dicembre presso l’hotel Riviera di Las Vegas, questa Single Action, pensata e voluta dalla ditta F.A.P. F.lli Pietta, ottenne in soli 3 mesi di produzione la fiducia dei suoi affezionati clienti. Questa fiducia nel nuovo prodotto, le fece guadagnare l’award come miglior arma dell’anno 2002. Premiata per l’affidabilità dei materiali scelti, la cura di ogni particolare, la cura con cui viene realizzata, questa 1873 mod. Pietta aggiunge pregio a tutta la linea di armi che l’azienda produce ormai da anni.

Established in 1960 by Knight Giuseppe Pietta, F.A.P. F.lli Pietta started his path in the world of guns manufacturers with the production of hunting guns in the variation of side by side and over & under. Following the big demand from the United States, Knight Giuseppe Pietta turned his production to the arms replicas of the American Civil War. In 1964 F.A.P. F.lli Pietta started to grow and during the following years made a reputation and acquired his place in a very difficult market: the one of the historical replicas. The 1851 Navy model was the first in demand. Shortly other models were added, like the 1860 Army, the 1858 New Model Army, the LeMat and so on. In 2002 F.A.P. F.lli Pietta decided to enrich his already wide range of Old West replicas with the most famous

revolver well known to date: the 1873 Single Action Pietta Model. A lot of work was involved at human level for the design of this gun that was introduced to the US market and to the Cowboy Action Shooting shooters in September 2002. During the first SASS® (Single Action Shooting Society®) Convention held in December at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, this gun, designed and wanted by the F.A.P. F.lli Pietta, achieved with just 3 months production the confidence of his most devoted customers. The trust in this new product lead to the award as best gun of 2002. Prized for the reliability of the selected material, the care given to each single part and to its production, this 1873 S.A. revolver Pietta model, adds prestige to the current line of guns that F.A.P. F.lli Pietta produce long since.

Fondée en 1960 par le Chevalier Giuseppe Pietta, la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta commença son chemin dans le monde des fabricants d’armes en produisant des fusils de chasse tels que les superposés et les juxtaposés. En réponse à la grande demande en provenance des Etats Units, le Chevalier Giuseppe Pietta adressa la production de son entreprise vers la reproduction des armes de la Guerre de Sécession Américaine. En 1964 la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta commença son développement et au cours des années s’affirme et gagne sa place dans un marché vraiment difficile: celui des répliques des armes historiques. Le modèle Navy 1851 fut le premier demandé; bientôt l’on ajouta le 1860 Army, le 1858 New Model Army, le LeMat etc. En 2002, la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta a décidé d’introduire dans sa très vaste gamme de répliques du Vieux Ouest le plus célèbre revolver connu

à ce-jour: le modèle 1873 Pietta Single Action. Coûté beaucoup de travail au niveau humain, il fut présenté au marché américain et aux tireurs de la "Cowboy Action Shooting" en septembre de 2002. Au cours de la première Convention de la SASS® (Single Action Shooting Society®) qui s’est tenue en décembre à l’hôtel Riviera de Las Vegas, cette simple action pensée et voulue par la F.A.P. F.lli Pietta obtint en seulement trois mois de production la confiance de ses clients affectionnés. Cette confiance dans ce nouveau produit, lui fit gagner l’award comme meilleure arme de 2002. Primée pour la bonté des matériaux sélectionnés, le soin de chaque détail, le soin avec lequel elle est réalisée, cette 1873 modèle Pietta ajoute prestige à toute la ligne d’armes que l’entreprise produit depuis plusieurs années.

La J.H. Dance & Brothers cominciò la produzione di revolvers nel 1861/1862. Ispirati probabilmente dai modelli più in voga in quel periodo, le 1848 Dragoon e le 1851 Navy, idearono il loro revolver: il modello Dance (b). Identifiable by a retractable trigger ejected from the frame when cocking the hammer, by a single action mechanism, by three basic constructive components tied up together and by a 5 chambers. 36 cal. cylinder, the revolver is produced in two different versions: PIETTA PATERSON STANDARD (a) and EXTRA DELUXE (bi: picture at page 33).

In 1861/1862 the J.H. Dance & Brothers started the production of revolvers. Probabily inspired by the most used models at that time, the 1848 Dragoon and the 1851 Navy, they designed the Dance revolver (b).

Probabilmente l’arma preferita dal loro ideatore Samuel Colt: il Modello 1851 Navy. Fu lui a chiamarla Navy indicandone così l’uso per la marina grazie al suo calibro contenuto, il .36. Venne però venduta in maggior quantità all’esercito e divenne compagna inseparabile dei Nordisti durante tutta la Guerra Civile. Il Modello 1851 Navy Yank (d) venne considerata tra i più brillanti revolver a singola azione grazie alla sua rapidità di estrazione e rinculo leggero. Disponibile nelle versioni “Modello SHERIFF’S“ (e) con canna ridotta (l’arma preferita dal leggendario sceriffo di Abilene: Wild Bill Hickok), “Modello CIVILIAN” (g) con sottoguardia e fascetta in ottone argentati, e “Modello LONDON“ (f) con sottoguardia squadrato come quelle prodotte appunto nella città da cui presero il nome dal 1853 al 1856.

The 1851 Navy model was probably Col. Samuel Colt’s favourite. He named it Navy Model, meaning its use on the sea thanks to the small .36 cal. It was instead sold in larger quantities to the Army and became inseparable companion of the Yankees during the Civil War. The 1851 Navy Yank model (d) was considered as one of the most brilliant single action revolver thanks to its fast draw out and light recoil. Available in the versions “SHERIFF’S Model” (e) with shortened barrel (the favourite gun of Wild Bill Hickok, the legendary sheriff of Abilene), CIVILIAN Model (g) with silver plated brass backstrap and triggerguard and the LONDON Model (f) with squareback triggerguard, like the ones produced from 1853 to 1856 in the city which they took the name from.

Fut toutefois vendu en plus grandes quantités à l’Armée et devint le compagnon inséparable des Nordistes au cours de la Guerre Civile. Le modèle 1851 Navy Yank (d) fut considéré comme le plus éclatant revolver à simple action grâce à la rapidité de tir et le léger recul. A Guerra inoltrata il Governo sudista si trovò a far appello al patriottismo di chiunque potesse contribuire alla produzione di armi. A questa richiesta di aiuto rispose il patriota Mr. Griswold. La produzione di armi della Griswold & Grier fu subito bloccata per la mancanza di acciaio: vennero quindi utilizzate le campane delle Chiese, le impugnature di spade, le parti di cannoni. Nacquero così le Reb Confederate (i), con canna tonda, bascula in ottone color rosso/giallo, fascette e sottoguardia in ottone come il castello, le Reb Nord Navy (h) con unica differenza la canna ottagonale. Per completare la gamma abbiamo introdotto le versioni SHERIFF’S e CARBINE (l).

Far into the war the Confederate Government was forced to appeal to the patriotism of anyone who could contribute in the production of guns. Mr. Griswold answered to this help request. The gun production of the Griswold & Grier was soon stopped by the lack of steel: churches bells, sword’s handles and cannon parts were used. Thus originated the Reb Confederate (i), with round barrel and red or yellow cast brass frame, brass triggerguard and backstrap of the same color of the frame and, afterwards, the Reb Nord Navy (h) with an octagonal barrel. To complete the line we have introduced the SHERIFF’S and CARBINE versions (l).

A guerre avancée, le Gouvernement Confédéré fut contraint F à faire appel au patriotism des citoyens pouvant contribuer à la production des armes. A cet appel répondit, entre autres, le patriote Mr. Griswold. La production des armes de la Griswold & Grier fut mise en difficulté par le manque d’acier. L’on utilisa alors les cloches des Eglises, les poignées des epées et les pièces des canons. Ainsi naquirent le Modèle Reb Confédéré (i) avec canon rond bâti en laiton couleur rouge/jaune, armature de crosse et pontet en laiton comme le bâti, le modèle Reb Nord Navy (h) avec la seule différence du canon octogonal. Pour compléter la gamme nous proposons les versions SHERIF et CARABINE (l).

The last models produced by Col. Colt before his death were the 1860 Army Model .44 cal. (m) and the 1861 Navy Model .36 cal. (n) built using the new steel-silver alloy, discovered in the Col. Colt’s plants. We have introduced various models in our range: PIETTA SHERIFF’S Model (o), PIETTA 1860 ARMY BRASS FRAME (p), an inexpensive variation of the original steel frame gun, PIETTA 1861 NAVY with brass backstrap and triggerguard, PIETTA 1862 NEW YORK METROPOLITAN POLICE .36 cal., the gun which was for many years the ordnance weapon of the N.Y.City Police, with silver plated backstrap and triggerguard, THE PIETTA 1862 POLICE “PONY EXPRESS” .36/.44 cal. with brass frame.

Eliphalet Remington iniziò la sua produzione d'armi nel 1816 ad Ilion, New York. Grazie al talento del suo progettista Mr Beals, nel 1858 brevettò e iniziò a produrre un’arma rivoluzionaria: la 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY CAL. 44 (q). Come accadde per Colt, anche per Remington la Guerra Civile rappresentò la sua chiave di svolta. Gli ordini del Governo Federale consentirono, infatti, alla “Remington & Sons –Ilion, N.Y.” di sviluppare e modificare il progetto iniziale, e le sue armi divennero delle veterane della Guerra Civile, apprezzate soprattutto per la robustezza del castello chiuso, più adatto a sopportare le potenti cariche del cal. 44, e per l’affidabilità e l’accuratezza del tiro.La nostra gamma si avvale di diverse versioni: la 1858 NEW MODEL NAVY in cl. 36, la versione con tacche di mire regolabili TARGET (r) in cl. 44, o nella finitura nichelata disponibile

sia con castello in acciaio che in ottone (z). Nata per resistere meglio all’usura della polvere nera, viene prodotta anche con un materiale moderno come lo STAINLESS STEEL (s) (t). Per chi preferisce il revolver a canna lunga proponiamo la 1858 BUFFALO cl. 44 (v). Completano la gamma le versioni con castello in ottone dette 1858 TEXAS cl. 36/44 (u).

The production of firearms by Remington goes back to 1816 when Eliphalet Remington produced his first gun in Ilion, N.Y. Thanks to the talent of his designer Mr. Beals, in 1858 he patented and started production of a revolutionary weapon: the 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY .44 CAL. (q). As it happened with Colt, for Remington too the Civil War represented a significant turn. The Federal Government contracts allowed Remington & Sons – Ilion N.Y. to develop and change the initial project. These guns became the veterans of the Civil War, appreciated for the strength of their rugged frame, suited for the heavy .44 cal. loads, for their shooting reliability and accuracy. Our range covers various versions: the 1858 NEW MODEL NAVY in .36 cal., the TARGET version with adjustable front and rear sight in .44 cal. (r) or the NICKEL plated version available with brass or steel frame (z).

The New Models

Another version is the STAINLESS STEEL (s) (t), designed to better stand the wear caused by the black powder. For whoever prefers the long barrel we propose the 1858 BUFFALO .44 cal. (v). The range is accomplished by the 1858 TEXAS with brass frame .36/.44 cal (u).

Costituita dal 1863 al 1873, ne furono prodotti 25.000 esemplari, che vennero suddivisi in tre versioni. Il primo tipo aveva bascula e sottoguardia in ottone (ac). Il secondo, identico nelle dimensioni e nel meccanismo al primo, aveva bascula in acciaio e sottoguardia in ottone (ab). Il terzo, ed ultimo della serie, era completamente in acciaio (aa). Approx. 25.000 pieces were produced in three different versions between 1863 and 1873. The first type featured a brass frame and triggerguard (ac). The second, identical in size and in mechanism to the first, featured a steel frame and brass triggerguard (ab). The third, and last of the series, was completely made in steel (aa). The Pocket revolver is now available in all versions featuring walnut grips, case hardened hammer and trigger and blued octagonal barrel. Available also in nickelplated version (ad) and engraved version (ae).

Il più inusuale ma certamente il più famoso sin dalla Guerra di Secessione tra tutti i revolvers a polvere nera porta il nome di Le Mat. Questo revolver dava la possibilità di sparare 10 colpi (9 colpi + 1 cal.65). La canna in cl.65 viene da noi prodotta, per esigenze di mercato, in cl. 20 ad avancarica. Ora la Le Mat è stata perfettamente riprodotta per collezionisti e storici nei tre modelli principali: CAVALRY (ag) con guardia a ricciolo, cane chiuso, piastra bloccaggio canna e anello; NAVY (ah), con guardia liscia, nottolino di sparo con ricciolo e perno bloccaggio canna; ARMY (af) simile al modello Navy con nottolino di sparo liscio.

The most unusual, but certainly the most famous since the Civil War among all the black powder revolvers, bears the name of Le Mat. This revolver allowed to shoot 10 shots (9 shots plus 1 in .65 ga). The .65 ga. central barrel is produced, for market requirements, in .20 ga. for muzzleloaders. Now the LeMat has been perfectly re-created for collectors and historians in the three main models: CAVALRY (ag) with spur triggerguard, lever type barrel release, cross pin barrel selector and a lanyard ring, NAVY (ah) with knurled pin barrel release and spur barrel selector, ARMY (af) similar to the Navy Model with cross pin barrel selector.

The Right Gun in the Wrong Time Il castello é composto da due parti, trattenuto in posizione di chiusura da un perno a vite posizionato nella parte superiore, tra l’alloggiamento del cane e lo scudo di rinculo. Un'altra novità era costituita dall’assenza del perno su cui il tamburo avrebbe dovuto ruotare. Purtroppo però Mr Starr, verso la metà del 1863, si trovò costretto a trasformare il suo geniale revolver da doppia azione, la STARR D.A. MODEL 1858 cl.44 (al), in singola pur mantenendo il cal. 44. Riuscì così a produrre un’arma efficace ed economica, la STARR S.A. MODEL 1863 ARMY CAL. 44 (ai).

The two piece frame are held together by a knurled thumb screw which was located on the right side of the frame, between the recoil shield and hammer. Another newness was the lack of the cylinder pin. Unfortunately, towards the middle of 1863, Mr Starr was forced to turn his genial revolver from double action, the STARR S.A. MODEL 1858 .44 cal. (al) into single action, still in .44 cal. He could then produce an efficient and affordable weapon the STARR S.A. MODEL 1863 ARMY .44 cal. (ai).

The gun is available with a blue finish, 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY FOR SHOOTERS (am) and in stainless steel, 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY STAINLESS STEEL FOR SHOOTERS.

di Secessione, nacquero molti modelli di armi che, in varia misura, svolsero un ruolo importante nella stesura della storia americana. Una tra queste armi fu proprio la carabina Smith: molti furono i pionieri che attraversavano la frontiera armati della loro fidata carabina. La bascula incernierata permetteva una ricarica semplice e veloce persino da cavallo. La riproduzione della carabina Smith è disponibile in versione CAVALRY cl. 50 (bp), con ponticello e anello-sella, ARTILLERY (bq), con maglietta porta-cinghia, e finemente incisa a mano (br).

During the period so called “of transition”, soon after the end of the Civil War, many weapons were originated and played, more or less, an important part in the american history. The Smith Carbine was one of those weapons: many pioneers ventured West armed with their trustworthy Smiths. The hinged breech action allowed a quick and easy reload even on horseback. The reproduction of the Smith Carbine is available in CAVALRY version .50 cal (bp) with saddle bar ring, ARTILLERY (bq) with sling swivels and finely hand engraved (br).

Pendant la périod dite “de transition”, tout de suite á la fin de la Guerre Civile, naquirent plusieurs modèles d’armes qui jouèrent un rôle plus ou moins important dans l’histoire américaine. L’une de ces armes fut la Carabine Smith: nombreux furent les pionniers qui affrontèrent la grande aventure, armés de leur fiable et fidèle Smith. La boîte de culasse charniérée permettait un rechargement simple et rapide, même à cheval.
