City Design For your final assessment in the unit on angle pairs, parallel and perpendicular lines, you are going to design a city. You may work in teams of NO MORE THAN 3 STUDENTS on this task. Use this document as a checklist for your project. You will be graded according to the attached rubric. 1. Before beginning the project, decide on a name for your city. 2. Your city may have many different streets, but it must contain all of the following: o
at least six parallel streets
o
at least five pairs of streets that meet at right angles to each other
o
at least three transversal streets
3. Use an appropriate scale to construct an accurate two-dimensional pictorial representation of your city. 4. All parallel and perpendicular streets should be carefully drawn. Use a protractor and straightedge to make sure that your streets are parallel and perpendicular. 5. Label the angle measures, to the nearest degree, of all the street intersections in your city. 6. Give a name to each street in your city.
VERY IMPORTANT! Place each of the following on your drawing according to the given specifications: a.
the bank and the post office at alternate interior angles;
b.
City Hall and the Courthouse at vertical angles;
c.
a school and a supermarket at corresponding angles;
d.
a gas station and a hardware store on streets that are parallel to each other;
e.
the hospital and a general store on a transversal street, and both on the same side of the transversal;
f.
a motel, a beauty salon, and a pharmacy on streets forming a right triangle;
g.
a park in the city with streets as boundaries and in the shape of a different triangle;
h.
5 stop lights at intersections of streets that are perpendicular;
i.
3 yield signs on transversal streets;
j.
2 flashing red/yellow lights at any two intersecting streets.
k.
You may add anything else you wish to your city representation, but a sheet identifying each addition must accompany your model. If you wish, you may make a three-dimensional model of your city.
l.
Be creative, accurate, and neat. Make your city attractive.
