Impellers :Each impeller is mounted on pinion shaft with a locanut , dowel pin & stud , high & low speed rotors are dynamically balanced as a whole assembly, when new impellers or other rotor components are installed the rotor must be balanced & impeller & impeller cap matchmarked after final balancing is completed removal : remove top half of gear case, 9/13/2014

Low speed rotor assembly : Remove first stage casing, remove bearing & seals, it is not necessary to disassemble first stage impeller from low speed pinion to remove rotor, after removing bearings & seals slide rotor through first stage backplate . 9/13/2014

High speed rotor assembly :Remove 2nd & 3rd stage compressor casing, remove bearings & seals, remove lock nut right hand thread & impeller cap of the 2nd stage impeller, use an industrial heat gun to heat pinion, 121 degree centrigrade maximum, uniformly at seal area, place a piece of wood on the stud & tap lightly until impeller slips off pinion, remove pinion through 3rd stage backplate.do not remove dowel pin or stud from pinion. 9/13/2014

Installation :low speed rotor assembly –Install o-ring on pinion, install pinion through back plate into compressor. High speed rotor assembly--- Remove lock nut of 2nd stage impeller, right hand thread & impeller cap, impeller lock nuts are speacial design which allow them to be used only once, install new lock nuts whenever assembling rotor assemblies.remove 2nd stage impeller by placing rotor in vice using wood blocks or brass sheets 9/13/2014 14 to protect gear teeth, heat pinion
uniformly at seal area with an individual heat gun to 121 degree c maximum only after sufficient heating time slip impeller off pinion either by tapping the back of the impeller or using a puller, when using a puller use hand applied torque to gain necessary removal force, the expansion of the pinion should be the factor that allows the impeller to move , not the puller tension. The importance of this procedure is to prevent the dragging of metal from the interferance fit.install 9/13/2014

o-ring on pinion. Install rootr assembly through 3rd stage backplate into compressor.due to interferance fit the impeller should be chilled for 15 or 20 minutes at – 40 degree. Place impeller in between some rags in a bucket & use a CO2 fire extinguisher or dry ice to chill the impeller.at this time pinion should be heated to 121 degree c . install previously removed impeller over rotor stud into end of pinion . align impeller until dowel pin lines up with its slot & seal impeller tight 9/13/2014

against pinion. Rotate impeller clockwise, to seal impeller against anti-rotation pin to avoid shifting during operation.place impeller cap cover rotor stud until match marks line up. Apply felpro C5-A to threads & install locknut on rotor stud finger tight. LOCK NUT TORQUE : left handed locknut 3rd stage torque=40 N-m
Right handed locknut 1st & 2nd stage torque=141-149 N-m Torque locknut to 5N-m. donot use 2nd stage locknut as an aid to prevent rotor from turning, block bull gear. Carbon Seal Assembly : removal :remove gear case cover, remove pinion bearings, remove top & bottom halves of seal retaining ring , remove the seal assembly from backplate, remove cap screw & 0- ring from seal, lift off the top half of seal & roll the bottom half out of the gear case, o-ring will remain on the shaft , inspect the carbon ring sealing surfaces for scoring, cracking, sign of ecessive wear, iinstallation : place the seal assembly on the shaft & install o-rings in the grooves on seal , roll the bottom half around the shaft & into the gear case bolt top half of seal assembly to the bottom half , install orings in grooves on the top half seal assembly, press the seal assembly into the compressor backplate, ensure anti-rotation pin engages the notch in the backplate, install top & bottom halves of seal ring , install bearing assembly, install gear case cover. 9/13/2014

Pinion Float & Impeller Running Clearances :low speed rotor assembly-the 1st stage impeller running clearances is adjusted by changing the shimpack thickness on the pinion bearing next to the 1st stage. The pinion float is adjusted by changing the shim pack thickness on the bearing at the opposite end of the pinion shaft. Adjust impeller running clearance first; pinion float second. Make adjustment with rotor assembly & compressor casing assembled & the gear case removed. Remove pinion bearing from the gear case, remove shimpack from both pinion bearings, install bottom halves of bearings in gear case, mount a dial indicator on the gear case& position the indicator point on a rotor surface which is perpendicular to the shaft end, move the pinion axially toward the 1st stage inlet until the impeller s the compressor casing & set the dial indicator on zero, move the pinion away from the compressor casing until the dial indicator reads 0.66mm

, move the pinion away from the compressor casing until the dial indicator reads 0.66mm, this is the mid point of 0.55mm & 0.76mm clearance range, position the impeller side bearing so the thrust face s the correspond – ing pinion thrust face while maintaining the 0.66mm impeller clearance, measure the clearance with feeler gages between the vertical bearing surfaces & the vertical faces of the bearing bore in the gear case.the dimension determined are the 9/13/2014 shim thicknesses required to set the 85 st
Install shims & shim retainers on the 2nd stage bearing. Position the pinion so the thrust coller s the thrust face on the 2nd stage bearing. Position the 3rd stage bearing so there is o.15mm to 0.20mm clearance beten the 3rd stage bearing thrust face & the pinion thrust coller. Measure the clearance beteen the 3rd stage vertical bearing surfaces & the vertical faces of the bearing bore.( pinion float =0.15mm to 0.20mm) . install shims & the retainer on the bearings .pinion floatclearance may change hen gear case cover is installed. Mount a dial indicator ith the point on the pinion shaft end & check float after replacing gear case cover. Iif float is not correct,remove gear case cover & readjust. 9/13/2014

Maiin oil p/p: removal—remove gear case cover,loosen set screws in p/p copling , disconnect oil piping from p/p , remove cap screws & lockwashers from bottom half of gear case, pull p/p from gear case to disengage coupling. . Carbon Seal Assembly : removal :remove gear case cover, remove pinion bearings, remove top & bottom halves of seal retaining ring , remove the seal assembly from backplate, remove cap screw & 0- ring from seal, lift off the top half of seal & roll the bottom half out of the gear case, o-ring will remain on the shaft , inspect the carbon ring sealing surfaces for scoring, cracking, sign of ecessive wear, iinstallation : place the seal assembly on the shaft & install o-rings in the grooves on seal , roll the bottom half around the shaft & into the gear case bolt top half of seal assembly to the bottom half , install orings in grooves on the top half seal assembly, press the seal assembly into the compressor backplate, ensure anti-rotation pin engages the notch in the backplate, install top & bottom halves of seal ring , install bearing assembly, install gear case cover. 9/13/2014

. Pinion Float & Impeller Running Clearances :low speed rotor assembly-the 1st stage impeller running clearances is adjusted by changing the shimpack thickness on the pinion bearing next to the 1st stage. The pinion float is adjusted by changing the shim pack thickness on the bearing at the opposite end of the pinion shaft. Adjust impeller running clearance first; pinion float second. Make adjustment with rotor assembly & compressor casing assembled & the gear case removed. Remove pinion bearing from the gear case, remove shimpack from both pinion bearings, install bottom halves of bearings in gear case, mount a dial indicator on the gear case& position the indicator point on a rotor surface which is perpendicular to the shaft end, move the pinion axially toward the 1st stage inlet until the impeller s the compressor casing & set the dial indicator on zero, move the pinion away from the compressor casing until the dial indicator reads 0.66mm

, move the pinion away from the compressor casing until the dial indicator reads 0.66mm, this is the mid point of 0.55mm & 0.76mm clearance range, position the impeller side bearing so the thrust face s the correspond – ing pinion thrust face while maintaining the 0.66mm impeller clearance, measure the clearance with feeler gages between the vertical bearing surfaces & the vertical faces of the bearing bore in the gear case.the dimension determined are the 9/13/2014 shim thicknesses required to set the 85 st
Install shims & shim retainers on the 2nd stage bearing. Position the pinion so the thrust coller s the thrust face on the 2nd stage bearing. Position the 3rd stage bearing so there is o.15mm to 0.20mm clearance beten the 3rd stage bearing thrust face & the pinion thrust coller. Measure the clearance beteen the 3rd stage vertical bearing surfaces & the vertical faces of the bearing bore.( pinion float =0.15mm to 0.20mm) . install shims & the retainer on the bearings .pinion floatclearance may change hen gear case cover is installed. Mount a dial indicator ith the point on the pinion shaft end & check float after replacing gear case cover. Iif float is not correct,remove gear case cover & readjust. 9/13/2014

Maiin oil p/p: removal—remove gear case cover,loosen set screws in p/p copling , disconnect oil piping from p/p , remove cap screws & lockwashers from bottom half of gear case, pull p/p from gear case to disengage coupling. Installation—move gear shaft axially toard the oil p/p mounting flange to minimize axial forces on oil p/p coupling spring, place p/p on gear case & engage coupling, install lockwashers & capscrews in bottom half of gear case, tighten set screw in coupling, replace gear case cover, connect oil piping & prime p/p general data :--- bearing--- pinions rae combination tilt pad journal/tapered land thrust , gears are combination sleeve type journal/tapered land thrust, seals---- pinion shaft : horizontally split carbon ring assembly, gear shaft : spring backed, radial type seal , gear shaft rotation----anticlockwise hen viewed from coupling end . casing spilt line sealant --- tite seal
