CONDITIONAL SENTENCE Conditional Sentence (=Kalimat pengandaian) adalah kalimat yang digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu yang mungkin terjadi atau mungkin tidak terjadi seperti yang diharapkan. Kalimat pengandaian terdiri atas dua bagian, yaitu man clause (induk kalimat) dan if clause (anak kalimat). Dalam if clause terkandung syaratsyarat yang harus dipenuhi agar keadaan seperti terkandung dalam main clause dapat terwujud. Oleh karena itu, conditional sentences disebut juga kalimat bersyarat. Conditional Sentences atau kalimat pengandaian terdiri dari dua jenis yaitu real conditional (nyata) dan unreal/ contrary to fact (tidak nyata). Conditional sentences pada umumnya memiliki ciri-ciri sebagai berikut: a. digunakannya kata if dalam anak kalimat (subordinate clause). Karena clause ini diawali oleh if maka disebut if clause. b. digunakannya modal auxiliary, seperti will, can, may, must, would, could, might, etc. pada pokok kalimat (main clause). Ada beberapa tipe Conditional Sentence, yaitu: 1. Type I: Future Conditional 2. Type II: Present Conditional 3. Type III: Past Conditional 1. Type I: Future Conditional Kalimat ini mengungkapkan kejadian yang diharapkan akan terjadi di masa yang akan datang dan memiliki kemungkinan untuk terjadi. (probable condition) Pola kalimat: If + S + Verb (present), S + future tense atau subjek + future tense, if + subjek + future tense Contoh: 1. If she comes, I will give her the message. 2. If you study hard, you will the final exam. 3. If she wins the competition, they will give her a gold medal. 4. He will not go to the picnic, if it rains. 5. If we arrive late, she will be angry with us. 2. Type II: Present Conditional Kalimat ini menyatakan peristiwa yang diharapkan terjadi sekarang tetapi tidak terjadi. (Improbable condition) Pola kalimat: If + S + Verb 2 / were + S + would + Verb1 If + S + V2, Subject + Past Future Contoh: 1. If she visited me, I would give her money. 2. If I had enough time, I would go fishing. 3. If you were a sugar, I would be a ant. 4. If Natasha Rizky were my girlfriend, I would be the happiest boy in the world. 5. If he smokes less, he wouldn‟t cough so much. Catatan: Pada tipe ini, to be untuk semua subyek pada IF clause adalah WERE. 3. Type III : Past Conditional Kalimat ini menyatakan peristiwa yang diharapkan terjadi di waktu lampau, tetapi tidak terjadi. (impossible condition) Pola kalimat: If + S + Past Perfect +, S + Past perfect future + Verb 3 Subject + Past perfect future, if + Subjek + Past Perfect + V3 Contoh: 1. If he had studied hard, he would have ed the final exam. 2. If the team had played well, it would have won the competition. 3. If Alter Bridge had been here, I would have been very happy. 4. Catatan kali ini adalah mengenai "Conditional Sentence", Apa itu?, secara singkat Conditional Sentence adalah kalimat pengandaian, maksudnya adalah kalimat yang mengungkapkan caracara kalau kita ingin berandai-andai atau berangan-angan, contoh dalam Bahasa Indonesia adalah : Jika tidak hujan maka saya akan berangkat atau seandainya saya belajar maka saya akan lulus ujian itu. Dalam bahasa Inggris penjelasanya seperti ini. Conditional sentence itu terbagi menjadi tiga tipe, yaitu: 1. REAL CONDITIONAL SENTENCES/CONDITIONAL TYPE ONE FORM: (IF + THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE + THE FUTURE TENSE) Real conditional sentences adalah kalimat yang akan terjadi atau tidak akan terjadi (mungkin terjadi) tergantung pada suatu kondisi atau keadaan. CONTOH: Conditional sentences which may or may not happen (kalimat ‘conditional’ yang mungkin terjadi dan mungkin juga tidak terjadi)  If it rains, I will not go (We do not know yet wheter it will rain, may be it will rain. Maybe it won’t)  If you insist, he will let you have it (we do not know yet wheter you will insist. Maybe you will insist. Maybe you won’t)  If she loves you, she will be happy for you. (we do not know yet wheter she will love you. Maybe she will love you. Maybe she won’t). Kalimat utama di atas akan terjadi jika kondisi dalam If-clause terpenuhi. Kalau kondisi pada If-clause tidak terpenuhi, maka main clause-nya tidak akan terjadi. 2. UNREAL CONDITIONAL SENTENCES IN THE PRESENT/CONDITIONAL TYPE TWO FORM: (IF + THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE + THE PAST FUTURE TENSE) ‘Unreal Conditional Sentences in the present’ adalah kalimat yang tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan yang ada sekarang di hadapan kita. CONTOH: Conditional sentences which is contrary to the fact at present (kalimat ‘conditional’ yang bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan saat ini)  If I were in town, I would go. (I am not in town)  If I took the plane, I would get there fast. (I don’t take the plane)  If I knew, I would tell you. (I don’t know) 3. UNREAL CONDITIONAL SENTENCES IN THE PAST FORM: (IF + THE PAST PERFECT TENSE, + THE PAST FUTURE PERFECT TENSE) ‘Unreal conditional sentence in the past’ adalah kalimat yang tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan yang terjadi di masa lampau. CONTOH:  If I had know it, I would have told you.(I didn’t know it, or I haven’t known it.)  If you had told me, I would have defended you.(You didn’t tell me, or you haven’t told me.)  If she hadn’t come late, She would have defended you. (She came late, or she has come late.)

Linking Verb (Kata Kerja Penghubung) Linking verb adalah kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan subjek dengan pronoun (kata ganti) atau adjective (kata sifat) yang menerangkan subjek. Berikut ini adalah macam-macam linking verm (kata kerja penghubung): appear : kelihatan/tampak become : menjadi feel : merasakan get : mendapatkan grow : bertambah/tumbuh look : tampak/kelihatan remain : tetap/tinggal fall : jatuh seem : kelihatan, tampak smell : berbau turn : berubah, berbelok run : berlari Contoh: I feel hungry = Saya merasa lapar The man became poor = Pria itu menjadi miskin

Dari Kata Benda 1. Linking verb dapat dibentuk dengan menambahkan -en pada kata benda atau noun. Contoh: courage - encourage : memberanikan joy - enjoy : menikmati slave - enslave : memperbudak force - enforce : memaksa circle - encircle : melingkari 2. Dengan menambahkan akhiran -en pada akhir kata benda Contoh: fast - fasten : mempercepat fright - frighten : menakuti length - lengthen : memperpanjang strength - strengthen : memperkuat 3. Dengan menambahkan akhiran -ze atau -ize pada kata benda Contoh: sympathy - sympathize : bersimpati apology - apologize : meminta maaf colony - colonize : menjajah critic - criticize : mengkritik memory - memorize : mengenang 4. Dengan menambahka akhiran -fy, -ify, atau -efy pada kata benda terror - terrify : mengerikan beauty - beautify : mempercantik solid - solidify : mengeraskan liquid - liquefy : mencairkan class - classify : menggolongkan 5. Dengan mengubah huruf terakhir -f pada kata benda atau noun menjadi -ve relief - relieve : meringankan belief - believe : mempercayai half - halve : membagi dua proof - prove : membuktikan 6. Dengan melakukan perubahan khusus pada kata benda knowledge - acknowledge : membagi bath - bathe : mandi shot - shoot : menembak sale - sell : menjual seat - sit : duduk blood - bleed : berdarah food - feed : memberi makan breath - breathe : bernafas

Relative Pronouns Relative pronouns adalah kata ganti yang menunjuk pada kata benda yang mendahuluinya (antecedent) yang berfungsi sebagai penghubung dalam kalimat. Relative pronouns biasa diletakkan di awal dependent clause atau anak kalimat yang menerangkan atau memberikan informasi tambahan kepada independent clause atau main clause. Kata ganti yang digunakan adalah: who, whom, whose, which, dan that. - The man who is sitting in the corner is my friend. - The boy whom we visited is her boyfriend. - The girl whose car was sold will go to study abroad. - The filing cabinet, which we purchase last week, is very well built. - The book that describes about behaviour of animal is expensive. Kata who, whom, whose, which, dan that pada contoh di atas menunjuk pada kata benda sebelumnya (the man, the boy, the girl, the filling cabinet, the book). Nouns (kata benda) atau pronouns (kata ganti) seperti the man, the boy, the girl, the filling cabinet, dan the book disebut dengan istilah antecedent. - Voters whose names begin with the letters M to Z should go to Room 2. - That photo is a reminder of someone who was very important to me. - Hands up everyone who would like a drink. - A mole is an animal that lives underground. - He was accused of being drunk in charge of a vehicle, which is a serious offence. Untuk menunjuk pada orang, gunakan relative pronouns: who, whom, whose dan that. - the man who spoke - the man that spoke (meskipun pemakaian that juga benar, who lebih disarankan sebagai subject pronoun) - the man that I saw - the man whom I saw (meskipun pemakaian whom juga benar, that lebih disarankan sebagai object pronoun) Untuk menunjuk pada benda lainnya atau hewan, gunakan relative pronouns: which, that dan whose. - the cat which was sitting on the mat - the cat that was sitting on the mat - the book whose cover was torn - a book to which I often refer Ketika menunjuk pada sesuatu benda, of which bisa dipakai untuk menggantikan whose. - a book the cover of which was torn Perluasan relative pronouns dengan kata ganti seperti whoever, whomever, whatever dikenal sebagai indefinite relative pronouns (relative pronouns tanpa antecedent). - The boy will tease whomever he likes. - She said whatever came to mind. - Let in whoever comes to me. Kata what juga dapat digunakan sebagai indefinite relative pronouns, contoh: - I will tell you what you need to know. - I know what I like. Catatan Who disebut sebagai subject pronoun dan whom sebagai object pronoun. Hal ini bisa dibandingkan dengan he dan him, they dan them, dsb. - the man who was there (bandingkan „he was there‟) - the man whom I saw (bandingkan „I saw him‟) Kata whom lebih sering digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris formal. Dalam penggunaannya sehari-hari, baik dalam bentuk percakapan maupun tulisan, whom biasanya diganti dengan who. - the man who I saw - the man who you were speaking to Whom tidak bisa digantikan oleh who bila sebelumnya didahului oleh preposition. - the man to whom you were speaking - They elected Smith chairman, than whom there could have been no better choice. Biasanya bentuk preposition + whom ini dipakai dalam bahasa Inggris formal. Indefinite relative pronouns memiliki sifat yang terdapat pada relative pronouns maupun indefinite pronouns. Jenis pronouns ini seperti menunjuk pada suatu kata benda, tetapi orang atau benda yang dimaksud tidak disebutkan dengan jelas.
