it’s time to remedy golf’s biggest ill S
ay what you will about belly putters, titanium clubs and grooved wedges. The biggest threat to the sport of golf these days is pace of play. For all the resources golfers spend on trying to play better, the one they can’t buy is time. As the five- or six-hour round becomes more frequent, players are going to more time-efficient ways to spend their recreational time. “There’s no single bigger deterrent to growing this game than how long it takes to play golf these days,” says former PGA
Pete Dougherty
touring pro Brandel Chamblee, now a Golf Channel analyst. Unfortunately, today’s players don’t have great role models. We all turn to the PGA Tour to get our cues — what clubs to buy, what balls to use. So if Ben Crane or Hunter Mahan or Jim Furyk takes the equivalent of three commercial breaks to line up a putt, someone at the local municipal or country-club course is sure to imitate it. If pace of play is ever going to improve, it must start at the top, with the players on TV. “I was watching the guys pretty carefully about the slow play,” Johnny Miller, the lead golf analyst for NBC Sports, said recently, “and I counted several times, guys taking four or five, six, practice swings — and that’s prior to the start of preshot routine. That’s unbelievable.” Perhaps the USGA is listening. Golf’s governing body doesn’t always see things the same way as the PGA Tour — witness the bellyaching over the belly putter — but it has announced a program to study cause and effect of players at any level playing a round that approaches the eight-hour work shift. “Industry research clearly shows that slow play and the amount of time it takes to play a round of golf detract from the overall experience and threaten to drive players away from the game,” USGA
president Glen Nager said. “This problem touches every golfer, from the professional to the elite amateur to the millions of recreational golfers at both public and private facilities.” The USGA initiative is merely a small step toward addressing the issue, but at the same time recognizes that there is a problem. “At the U.S. Women’s Open last summer, we had six-hour rounds, which is not acceptable,” Nager said. “We will be talking to the players about what the expectations are before the round, during the around, and we’ll be istering penalties if we need to. “But it’s not only the players. We have to look at how we set up our championship. Last year at the Women’s Open, the sixth hole was a par 3, and a lot of pace-ofplay problems in that round were from the seventh on Saturday. We have to be held able for that.” Here’s what the USGA program includes: ■■■Analysis of key factors known to influence pace of play. ■■■Development of a pace-of-play model based on quanitifiable data. ■■■Improvements to the USGA pace-rating system. ■■■On-site assistance at golf courses to help managers assess and improve pace of play. ■■■Creation of player-education programs. The pace-of-play model, according to Nager, “will show the specific influences that course design, setup and operation, as well as the golfers themselves, have on pace of play.” In other words, if the structure is in place to promote speedier play, the golfers should follow suit. Nager said the PGA of America is on board with the program, and he hopes that the PGA Tour players will be, too. “They are a model for other players,” he said. “What we need to do is figure out, through our data analysis, how much of an effect it is. When we know what it is that’s causing slow play, we are going to go to everyone we can and ask them to help.” It’s going to be hard to grow the game until we can stunt the growth of how long it takes to play a round. ▶

Survey
30 questions: Each year that we offer our annual golf survey, and this is the 11th, there is a question or two that stands above the rest. This year it’s No. 23. (We’ll make you look ahead to see it.) It required more thought and time than the other 29 questions, but the responses were both wide-ranging and revealing. Amen to that. We wound up with nearly as many responses this year as the past two years combined. We thank you for that. After some of the responses you’ll see the “Off the green” comments. These unattributed observations were construed to be the most interesting.
Be sure to check out the Times Union golf blog at http://blog.timesunion.com/golf.

A showcAse At schuyler Loudonville club takes the State Am at the 11th hour to display course renovations By Pete Dougherty
By the time the New York State Golf Association realized that it may be without a course for its 2013 Men’s Amateur championship, almost any 100-acre parcel of land may have been considered. The Red Course at Bethpage State Park had been designated as the site, but officials learned in December of a conflict that couldn’t be resolved. As it turned out, the state association didn’t have to “settle” for a substandard track. The Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville stepped up. “It’s going to be great for us,” NYSGA
executive director Bill Moore said. “I’m very excited.” The tournament, a 72-hole stroke-play event, will be held July 23-25. Schuyler Meadows, a private club built in 1926, underwent a massive course renovation two years ago. Gil Hanse, who was hired to design the course in Rio de Janeiro that will be used for the 2016 Olympics, was the architect for the project. “We saw it as a great opportunity to showcase the golf course, showcase the club, and also give something back to golf,” said David Hayes, Schuyler Meadows’ green chairman. “You should host tournaments like this. It’s an important tournament, a state championship, so why not do it?” A majority of the work was to the bunkers, which have increased from 33 to 63. Those that were retained were renovated

David Hayes said offering Schuyler Meadows Club as the location for the New York State Amateur was “a great opportunity to showcase the golf course, showcase the club, and also give something back to golf.” The event is schedule for July 23-25.

completely. Tree removal has made the course much more scenic and strategic, a true test for the 144 amateurs who will play the 6,787-yard, par-72 layout. “It was kind of an open field,” Hayes said. “You could hit it anywhere. There wasn’t a lot of strategy on the golf course. That’s what Gil brought into it.” In anticipation of a lot of area players wanting to enter, the NYSGA has scheduled two qualifiers for the Capital Region: Sunday, June 23, at Ballston Spa, and Monday, July 1, at Pinehaven. “There’s no question that Albany is our strong area in participation,” Moore said. “It’s amazing.” This will mark the third time in six years that the State Am has been held in the Capital Region. Pinehaven was host in 2008. Albany Country Club was the site in 2010.
Next year’s tournament will be played at Bellevue in Syracuse. Moore said that the 2015 event will be on Long Island, perhaps Bethpage. “We want to go back to Long Island in ’15,” he said. “Whether it’s Bethpage or somewhere else, we are committed to doing that. We’re OK with Bethpage and the way it went down. We understand they’re a state park, and they had a chance to make some significant revenue (because of a Major League Baseball outing that was scheduled). “They were great in the way they worked with us. We just weren’t able to change our date. We’re going to keep looking at other sites as well as Bethpage for ’15, but we definitely want to get back down to the Island.” ▶

SYMETRA TOUR
Back to a midsummer dream I
t has been played at four courses under two tour names, but the Capital Region’s only professional tournament will be played for the 29th time this summer.
The Credit Union Challenge will be a stop on the Symetra Tour, which until two years ago was known as the Futures, and played July 12-14 at Capital Hills. Those are the earliest dates for the women’s event since moving to the Albany course in 2004, enabling its completion before the start of the Saratoga racing season. Jaclyn Sweeney, a Boston native who lives in Bradenton, Fla., may be back to defend her title. She finished 13th on last season’s tour money list and failed to earn unconditional LPGA status last season. The top 10 on the seasonending Symetra money list will gain full LPGA status for 2014.
2013 schedule (tentative)
Jaclyn Sweeney of Bradenton, Fla., won last year’s Credit Union Challenge at Capital Hills. Because she didn’t finish in the top 10 of last year’s Symetra Tour money list to earn LPGA status, Sweeney likely will be back to defend her crown.

GolfinG has culture, bowlinG is for dullards By William Tucker
M
y golfing friends know all about my disdain for bowling. They’ve heard me describe it as akin to playing the same hole over and over again in a windowless warehouse that smells of stale Genny Lite and malodorous shoes. On the other hand, I have played many courses in several countries in all kinds of weather, experiencing holes that range from a side-of-the-mountain Himalayan track to oiled sand greens in Manitoba to kangaroo-infested courses Down Under. Even when I play my home course, Ballston Spa Country Club, I often find myself playing any given hole from an adjacent fairway, lending a degree of freshness to the experience. My point being: golf and bowling occupy distantly opposite stars in the Milky Way of sports. The only similarity the

two diversions share is that both have never been played in a canoe by the Pope. Nowhere is this antipodal relationship manifested more than in the language and cultural heritage of each game. Let’s start with the basics. Like many sports, the object of golf and bowling is essentially to move a ball from one position to another. To do this, bowlers roll or throw the ball. Golfers have many choices. We are all familiar with driving, hooking, drawing, slicing, fading, lobbing, pitching, putting, topping chunking, blading, blasting, skulling, whiffing, chili-dipping, toeing, heeling, exploding, scooping, punching, lagging, threading, skying and of course, shanking. We also hit fat shots, grass cutters, worm burners, pop-ups, knock downs, bump-and-runs, fliers, and stingers, not to mention duck hooks and zoomies. We execute these shots with modern

woods, metals, wedges, irons, putters, chippers, ginties and hybrids as well as the historic brassies, mashies, niblicks, jiggers, cleeks and baffies. Bowlers roll the ball. With the arm. On the upside, it’s like experiencing death without the messy part. The terminology I have mentioned for golf is pretty standard stuff, but there exists in golf literature a degree of specialization that takes it even further: ■■■A sclaffed shot is a fat shot, but the club bounces into the ball. ■■■A snipe is a line drive with a sharp nosedive at the end of its trajectory. ■■■A foozle is a failed effort, with a skittering mud-runner result. ■■■A smudge is a smothered fudge of a stroke that invariably causes one not to relinquish the honor. ■■■Finally, John Updike describes a gronkled shot as one that is “topped in such a way that it comes to a halt behind some inconvenient undergrowth some 30 yards distant from the point of imperfect .” Now let’s examine the literature of the games. There are hundreds of literary books about the culture of golf. There is no literature about bowling. But writing derisively about bowling’s lack of class is too easy, much like the heyday of stand up comedians during George W’s in office. Feeling as though I wasn’t giving bowling a fair shake, I went all bleeding-heartgranola and searched for witty, insightful quotes about the pastime. I have well over 200 books in my golf library, four of which are devoted to golf quotations, but finding any quotes at all about bowling was like trying to find an honest politician. The golf quotes are often witty or pithy — “Golf is the loneliest game, not excluding postal chess” — and even poetic, such
as, “The links were sweet with the scent of wild orchids and thyme, commingling with the brackish breath of the ocean and the sweat of a golfer trying to conquer himself.” Then we have the best bowling quotes I could find on the internet. ■■■“So you’d go to the bowling alley. We bowled and you could be in the back and you could make out. And you know how hot it was to make out.” — Stephen Tyler ■■■“I haven’t had sex in eight months. To be honest, I now prefer to go bowling.” — Li’l Wayne ■■■“Shopping tip: You can get shoes for 85 cents at the bowling alley.” — Anonymous I finally realized that there was hope for bowling in the world of culture when I realized one of my favorite movies from my favorite directors, the Coen Brothers, was a bowling movie. “The Big Lebowski” has many memorable quotes, although sadly they only serve to underline the game’s (I’m being generous here) everyman status in the world of recreation. Few actually refer to bowling, although they’re there. The Dude asks, “You brought a (freakin)’ Pomeranian bowling?” to which Walter replies, “Brought it bowling? I didn’t rent it shoes. I’m not buying it a (freakin’) beer. It’s not taking your (freakin)’ turn, Dude.” But mostly the good quotes represent the bowling ethos without referring to it specifically. “Darkness warshed over the Dude — darker’n a black steer’s tookus on a moonless prairie night.” I rest my case. ▶ William Tucker is a Times Union golf blogger.
