Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band that formed in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band, led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose, has gone through numerous line-up changes and controversies since its formation; the current lineup comprises vocalist Rose, guitarists Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, DJ Ashba and Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Frank Ferrer and keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman. The band has released six studio albums, three EPs and one live album during its career. The band has sold an estimated 100 million albums worldwide,[8] [9] including over 43 million in the United States.[10] The band's 1987 major label debut album → Appetite for Destruction has sold in excess of 28 million copies and reached number one on the United States Billboard 200. In addition, the album charted three Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Sweet Child o' Mine" which reached number one.[11] The 1991 albums → Use Your Illusion I and → Use Your Illusion II debuted on the two highest spots on the Billboard 200 and have sold a combined 14 million copies in the United States alone and 35 million worldwide. After over a decade of work, the band released their follow-up album, → Chinese Democracy, in 2008.

Guns N' Roses Their mid-to-late eighties and early nineties years have been described by individuals in the music industry as the period in which "they brought forth a hedonistic rebelliousness and revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene, reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones."[12]

History Formation (1985–1987) The group was formed in early 1985 by Hollywood Rose Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), and L.A. Guns Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Ole Beich (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums).[13] The band created its name by combining two of the group ' names. A short time later, bassist Ole Beich was fired and replaced by Duff McKagan. After a short while Tracii Guns was replaced by Slash; after Tracii didn't show up to rehearsal. Slash had played with McKagan in Road Crew and Stradlin during a short stint in Hollywood Rose. The new line-up came together quickly, but after deciding to go on a "tour" from Sacramento, California to Duff's home town of Seattle, drummer Rob Gardner quit and was replaced by Slash's close friend Steven Adler.[14] The band, which continued to be called Guns N' Roses even after the departure of Tracii Guns, established its first stable line up on this so-called "Hell Tour". In an interview, Slash stated, "That [trip to Seattle] is really what cemented the band" and established its chemistry.[15] Discovery After witnessing a Guns N' Roses show at the Troubadour, Tom Zutaut, a Geffen Records A&R executive, falsely warned other scouts "they suck" so he could have more time and leeway to try to sign them.[16] Axl Rose demanded, and received, a $75,000 advance from Zutaut before revealing that he had promised an A&R executive from Chrysalis Records that the band would sign with her if she walked naked down the Sunset Strip. For five days, Zutaut nervously watched from his office window for a naked A&R executive before he could close the deal.[17] Alan Niven was subsequently hired as the band's manager, and the team set out to record the band's full-length debut album. Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide Geffen Records released an EP in late 1986 to keep the interest in the band alive while the band withdrew from the club scene to work in the studio. The four song EP → Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide came out on the ostensibly independent "Uzi Suicide Records" label (which was actually a Geffen subsidiary.) Only 10,000 vinyl copies of the EP were produced. On Halloween night 1986 Guns N' Roses performed at UCLA's Ackerman Ballroom as the opening act to Thelonious Monster, The Dickies, and the headlining Red Hot Chili Peppers. The record was billed as a live recording, although Rose would reveal, years later, that it was simulated. The EP consisted of four songs from the band's demo tapes with crowd noise overdubbed. It contained covers of Rose Tattoo's "Nice Boys" and Aerosmith's "Mama Kin", along with two original compositions: the punk anthem "Reckless Life" and the classic rock inspired "Move to the City", both of which were co-written by Hollywood Rose's founding member Chris Weber.[18] The original vinyl Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide EP has become a valuable and sought after collector's item, even though the tracks were re-issued two years later on the GN'R Lies album.

Appetite for Destruction, G N' R Lies (1987–1989) The band's first album, → Appetite for Destruction was released on July 21, 1987. The album underwent an artwork change after the original Robert Williams cover design (a surrealist scene in which a dagger-toothed monster vengefully attacks a robot rapist) spawned complaints from religious groups and caused some record stores to brown bag, obscure, or refuse to sell the album.[19] The revised cover was a design by Bill White, a tattoo artist, who had originally designed it for a tattoo Rose had got the previous year. The design featured each of the five band ' skulls layered on a cross. Rose later insisted that the Gold and Platinum plaques issued by the RIAA be set using the original cover. The artwork from the original cover can be found in the booklet of the CD release. In the US, "Welcome to the Jungle" was issued as its first single with an accompanying music video. Initially, the album and single lingered for almost a year without performing well, but when Geffen Records founder David Geffen was asked to lend to the band, he obliged by personally convincing MTV executives to play "Welcome to the Jungle" during their after hours rotation. Even though the video was initially only played one time at 4 a.m. on a Sunday, rock and punk fans took notice and soon began requesting the video and song en masse.[17] In Japan, an entire EP entitled Live from the Jungle was issued, containing the album version of "Sweet Child o' Mine" along with a selection of numerous Marquee Club recordings. "Sweet Child O' Mine" was the album's second US single co-written by Axl Rose as a poem for his girlfriend and future wife, Erin Everly. Due to the growing grassroots success of the band and the cross-gender appeal of the tune, the song and its accompanying music video received heavy airplay on both radio and MTV, and became a smash hit during the summer of 1988, reaching the top of the charts in the U.S. Slash stated on VH1's 100 Greatest songs of the 80's, "It was actually my least favorite song we ever wrote...I hate it, but it turns out to be our greatest song ever". "Welcome to the Jungle" was then re-issued as a single, with new pressings of records and tapes and new artwork. It was a successful re-release, as the single reached #7 in the U.S. The UK re-release was backed with an acoustic version of "You're Crazy", recorded much earlier than the one featured on the G N' R Lies EP. By the time "Paradise City" and its video reached the airwaves and peaked at #5 in the U.S., the band's touring success and fame had catapulted the album to #1 on the Billboard charts. "Welcome to the Jungle", "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "Paradise City" were all top ten singles in the U.S. To date, Appetite for Destruction has sold over 28 million copies.[20] Guns N' Roses began opening shows for major acts, but as their fame began to take hold, a world tour in of Appetite for Destruction was scheduled. The band traveled across the United States, and in spring 1988 were invited to the notorious Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington in Leicestershire, England, where they shared the bill with groups like KISS and Iron Maiden. At the start of the Guns N' Roses set, the capacity crowd of over 100,000 began jumping and surging forward. Despite Rose's requests that the crowd move away from the stage, two fans were trampled to death. The media largely blamed the band for the tragedy, and reported that the band had continued playing even when there were dangerous crowd conditions. In fact, the final report on the Donington incident filed by the head of security at the venue noted that the band had not been aware of the extent of fan injuries, had immediately halted their set when requested to do so, and had attempted to calm the crowd.[21] Nonetheless, events such as these during the Appetite for Destruction tour earned the group the title of "the world's most dangerous band". In addition, the behavior of the band also garnered negative attention from the media. Duff, Slash, Izzy and Adler were often seen intoxicated both on and off stage.[22] The band's next release was → G N' R Lies in 1988, which reached #2 in the Billboard music charts. The album included the four → Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide recordings on one side and four acoustic songs on the other. The song "One in a Million", which included the words "niggers" and "faggots" among other such obscenities, led to controversy in which critics accused the band, and specifically Axl Rose, of racism and homophobia.[23] Rose responded (in a 1990 interview with MTV) by saying the claims were unfounded, particularly considering Slash himself is half black. He went on to explain that the words were those of a protagonist and not a personal statement, and that the lyrics reflected racial and prejudicial problems within society rather than promoting them. cited that he idolized gay/bisexual singers like Freddie Mercury and Elton John. The band had played gigs alongside the all-black metal band Body Count, and lead singer Ice T wrote in his book, The Ice Opinion, that Axl had been "a victim of the press the same way I am".[24] Even after the release of GN'R Lies, Appetite for Destruction continued to be popular for the rest of 1988 and 1989, which resulted in them winning both Favorite Heavy Metal Artist and Favorite Heavy Metal Album (Appetite for Destruction) at the nationally televised 1990 American Music Awards, where Slash and McKagan appeared visibly intoxicated and used profanities on the air. The finally took steps to deal with their addictions after Rose threatened to end the band if they continued with their heavy drug abuse. He even spoke publicly about the situation, specifically the heroin addictions, while opening for The Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1989 by stating that if certain of the band don't stop "dancing with Mr. Brownstone", Guns N' Roses was finished -- mainly referring to Slash and Adler.[25]

Fame and fortune (1990–1993) Use Your Illusion In 1990, Guns N' Roses returned to the studio to begin recording their most ambitious undertaking yet. During the recording session of "Civil War", drummer Steven Adler was unable to perform well due to his struggles with cocaine and heroin addiction—his difficulties in the studio caused the band to do nearly 30 takes.[26] As a result, Adler was fired in July 1990, and was replaced by former Cult drummer Matt Sorum, who Axl credited for saving the band. A few months prior, keyboardist Dizzy Reed became the sixth member of the group when he ed as a full time member. The band fired their manager, Alan Niven, in May 1991, replacing him with Doug Goldstein. According to a 1991 cover story by Rolling Stone magazine, Rose forced the dismissal of Niven (against the wishes of some of his bandmates) by refusing to complete the albums until he was replaced.[27]

With enough music for two albums, the band released → Use Your Illusion I and → Use Your Illusion II on September 17, 1991. The tactic paid off when the albums debuted at #2 and #1 respectively in the Billboard charts, setting a record as they became the first and only group to date to achieve this feat. The albums spent 108 weeks in the chart. Guns N' Roses accompanied the Use Your Illusion albums with many videos, including "Don't Cry", "November Rain" and "Estranged"—some of the most expensive music videos ever made. The hit ballad "November Rain" (#3 U.S.) became the most requested video on MTV, eventually winning the 1992 MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography. It is also the longest song in chart history to reach the Top Ten, clocking in at 8:56. During the awards show, the band performed the song with Elton John accompanying on piano. Both prior to and after the release of the albums, Guns N' Roses embarked on the 28-month-long Use Your Illusion World Tour. It became famous for both its financial success and the many controversial incidents that occurred at the shows, and is still currently the longest tour in rock history.

Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion World Tour The Use Your Illusion World Tour included a Slash guitar solo incorporating The Godfather theme, a piano-driven Axl Rose cover of "It's Alright" by Black Sabbath and an extended jam on the classic rock-inspired "Move to the City" where Rose showcased the ensemble of musicians assembled for the tour.[28] Many of the successful performances during the tour were equally matched, and often overshadowed in the press, by riots, late starts and outspoken rants by Rose. While the band's previous drug and alcohol issues were seemingly under control, Axl was often agitated by lax security, sound problems and unwanted filming or recording of the performances. He also used the time in-between songs to fire off political statements or retorts against music critics or celebrity rivals. On July 2, 1991, at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, Missouri, just outside of St. Louis during a performance of "Rocket Queen", Rose jumped into the audience and tackled a fan who was filming the show with a camera. He had a heated confrontation with the fan before physically assaulting him. After being pulled out of the audience by of the crew, Rose said: "Well, thanks to the lame-ass security, I'm going home!", slammed his microphone on the ground and left the stage. The angry crowd began to riot and dozens of people were injured. The footage was captured by Robert John, who was documenting the entire tour for the band. Rose was charged with having incited the riot, but police were unable to arrest him until almost a year later, as the band went overseas to continue the tour. Charges were filed against Rose but a judge ruled that he did not directly incite the riot. In his defense, Rose stated that the Guns N' Roses security team had made four separate requests to the venue's security staff to remove the camera, all of which were ignored, that other of the band had reported being hit by bottles from the audience in the arena and refusing to enforce a drinking limit.[29] Consequently, Use Your Illusion's artwork featured a hidden message amidst the Thank You section of the album insert: "Fuck You, St. Louis!" After a repeat of the St. Louis incident nearly unfolded during a concert in ,[30] rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin abruptly quit the band, citing a combination of Rose's personal behaviour (he would consistently delay the start of shows by hours at a time) and his mismanagement of the band[30] and difficulties being around Slash, Sorum, and McKagan due to his new-found sobriety and their continuing alcohol and substance addictions.[31] Axl Rose originally wanted Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro to replace Stradlin, but Stradlin was eventually replaced by Los Angeles-based guitarist Gilby Clarke whom Slash credited for saving the band. During many shows throughout the tour, Rose introduced Clarke and had him play "Wild Horses", a Rolling Stones cover with Slash. In late 1991, Rose added a touring ensemble to the band which included a horns section and several background vocalists despite the rest of the band's refusal. In 1992, the band appeared at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, performing a two-song set. Slash later performed "Tie Your Mother Down" with the remaining of Queen, while Axl Rose performed "We Will Rock You" and duetted with Elton John on "Bohemian Rhapsody". Their personal set included "Paradise City" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". When they returned to the U.S. for the second leg of the Use Your Illusion tour, Queen guitarist Brian May opened the shows with a band that included Cozy Powell on drums. Axl had originally wanted the grunge band Nirvana to open their Use Your Illusion tour but frontman Kurt Cobain refused. He also made some negative comments about Guns N' Roses infuriating Rose and started of one of his many feuds other than the ones with his bandmates. Later in the year they went on the mini-GNR-Metallica Stadium Tour with American Metal band Metallica. During a show in August 1992 at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, Metallica frontman James Hetfield suffered severe burns after stepping too close to a pyrotechnics blast. Metallica was forced to cancel the second hour of the show, but promised to return to the city for another show. After a long delay, during which the audience became increasingly restless, Guns N' Roses took the stage. However, the shortened time between sets did not allow for adequate tuning of stage monitors, resulting in musicians not being able to hear themselves. In addition, Rose claimed that his throat hurt,[32] causing the band to leave the stage early. The cancellation led to another riot by audience , reminiscent of the rioting that had occurred in St. Louis one year earlier. Rioters overturned cars, smashed windows, looted local

Guns N' Roses stores and set fires. Local authorities were barely able to bring the mob under control. This can be seen on video in A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica. On MTV's Rockumentary about Metallica, the band spoke about this tour and how they learned from Guns N' Roses what not to do. The historic tour ended in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on July 17, 1993. The tour set attendance records and lasted for 28 months, in which 192 shows were played. The show in Buenos Aires marked the last time original Slash and McKagan as well as newcomers Clarke and Sorum would play a live show with Rose. "The Spaghetti Incident?" On November 23, 1993, Guns N' Roses released a collection of punk and glam rock covers entitled → "The Spaghetti Incident?". Despite protests from Rose's band-mates, an und cover of the Charles Manson song "Look at Your Game Girl" was included on the album at his request. Years later, Rose said he would remove the song from new pressings of the album, claiming that critics and the media had misinterpreted his interest in Manson. Axl can be seen wearing a black Manson shirt in the video for "Estranged" from Use Your Illusion II. He also can be seen wearing a red Manson shirt in footage from their show in Milton Keynes, England in 1993. This version of the shirt had additional text on the back, "Charlie Don't Surf'. "Look at Your Game Girl" is still on the album. The Spaghetti Incident? did not match the success of the Illusion albums and tension increased within the band.

Deterioration (1994–1998) Interviews with Guns N' Roses band suggest that between 1994 and 1996, the band sporadically began to write and record new material, most of which, according to Slash, had been written by Axl.[33] At the time, the band had intended to release a single album with 10 or 12 songs.[34] Regarding the dysfunction of the band's recording at that time, Axl is quoted as saying "We still needed the collaboration of the band as a whole to write the best songs. Since none of that happened, that’s the reason why that material got scrapped."[35] Slash and Duff McKagan later left the group, and as such all of the original (aside from Axl Rose) had departed from the band. 1994 was the last year Axl held a press conference or performed until 2001 with his new cast. Axl's only performance in 1994 was a duet with Bruce Springsteen on a cover of the Beatles song "Come Together". An actual break-up of Guns N' Roses never occurred, as new players were brought in as the old ones left. (For more information on the personnel changes over the years see the article: "List of Guns N' Roses band ") McKagan was the last of Rose's original bandmates to leave; in 1997 he was replaced by Tommy Stinson (formerly of The Replacements.) By the end of 1998, a new version of Guns N Roses had emerged: many musicians have come and gone from the new band, but the core group has included Rose, Stinson, keyboardist Dizzy Reed, multi-instrumentalist Chris Pitman, and guitarist Robin Finck.

Chinese Democracy (1999–2008) In 1999, the band released a new song, "Oh My God", which was included on the soundtrack of the film End of Days. The track featured additional guitar work by Dave Navarro and Gary Sunshine, Rose's personal guitar teacher. The song's release was intended to be a prelude to their new album, entitled → Chinese Democracy. Geffen also released Live Era: '87-'93, a collection of live performances from various concerts during the Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion tours. Also in 1999, during an interview with Kurt Loder for MTV, Axl said that he had re-recorded Appetite for Destruction with the then-new band, apart from two songs which he had replaced with "Patience" and "You Could Be Mine".[36] Chinese Democracy had reportedly been in the works since 1994, with Rose the only original member still in the band. According to a report published in 2005 by The New York Times, Rose had allegedly spent $13 million in the studio by that point.[37]

In 1999, guitarist Robin Finck departed the band to re his former band, Nine Inch Nails, on tour. In 2000, avant-garde guitarist Buckethead ed Guns N' Roses as a replacement for Finck. Drummer Josh Freese was replaced with Bryan Mantia (formerly of Primus). Robin Finck returned to the band in late 2000, to complement Buckethead on lead guitar. The New Guns N' Roses The revised lineup finally made a public appearance in January 2001, with two well-received concerts, one in Las Vegas and one at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio de Janeiro. The band played a mixture of old hits as well as new songs from their forthcoming album. During their Rock in Rio set, Rose made the following comment regarding former of the band:

“

I know that many of you are disappointed that some of the people you came to know and love could not be with us here today. Regardless of what you have heard or read, people worked very hard (meaning my former friends) to do everything they could so that I could not be here [38] today. I say fuck that. I am as hurt and disappointed as you that unlike Oasis, we could not find a way to all get along.

”

The new lineup played a further two shows in Las Vegas at the end of 2001. In 2002, rhythm guitarist Paul Tobias left the band because of his frustrations with life on the road. He was replaced by Richard Fortus (formerly of The Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love). The band then played several shows in August 2002, headlining festivals and concerts throughout Asia and Europe. They made their way to New York for a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September. In 2002, the band's first North American tour since 1993 was organized to Chinese Democracy, with CKY and Mix Master Mike ing. However, the opening show in Vancouver was cancelled by the venue when Rose failed to turn up (having remained in Los Angeles), and a riot ensued. This tour was met with mixed results. Some concerts did not sell well, while shows in larger markets such as New York sold out in minutes. Due to a second riot by fans in Philadelphia when the band failed to show up again, tour promoter Clear Channel cancelled the remainder of the tour. The band went on hiatus until they were scheduled to play at Rock in Rio IV in May 2004. However, Buckethead left the band in March of that year, causing the band to cancel. Also in March 2004, Geffen released Guns N' Roses' → Greatest Hits, since Rose had failed to deliver a new studio album in more than ten years. Rose expressed his displeasure with this album as its track listing was established without his consent and went as far as trying to block its release by suing Geffen. This failed, however, and the album went triple platinum in the USA. In February 2006, demos of the songs "Better", "Catcher in the Rye", "I.R.S.", and "There Was a Time" were leaked on to the Internet through a Guns N' Roses fan site. The band's management requested that all links to the MP3 files and all lyrics to the songs be removed from forums and websites. Despite this, radio stations began adding "I.R.S." to playlists, and the song actually reached #49 on the Radio & Records Active Rock National Airplay chart in the final week of February—the first time an Internet leak has done so. On May 5, 2006, Axl Rose appeared on the Friday Night Rocks with Eddie Trunk radio show (during an interview with Sebastian Bach) and said that the new Guns N' Roses album would be released before the end of the year. Later in May, the band launched a European tour, headlining both the Festival and Rock In Rio - Lisbon. Four warm-up shows preceded the tour at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and became the band's first live concert dates since the aborted 2002 tour. The shows also marked the debut of guitarist and composer Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, replacing Buckethead. During the tour, former bandmate Izzy Stradlin and ex-Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach made frequent guest appearances. Five warm-up shows before a 2006 North American tour were held in September 2006. The tour officially commenced on October 24 in Miami. Drummer Frank Ferrer replaced Bryan Mantia, who took a leave of absence to be with his wife and newborn child. Coinciding with the tour, the song "Better" was featured in an internet ment for Harley-Davidson beginning in October 2006.[39] That same month, Rolling Stone published an

Guns N' Roses article revealing that Andy Wallace would be mixing the final album. In December 2006, Axl Rose released an open letter to fans announcing that Merck Mercuriadis had been fired as the band's manager. He revealed that the last four dates of the North American tour would be cut so the band could work on post-production for Chinese Democracy. He also set a tentative release date for the album for the first time since the album's announcement: March 6, 2007. On February 8, 2007, the band played a two-song set at the Rodeo Drive's Walk of Style ceremony, held in Beverly Hills, California. The band, with Chris Pitman on bass, blazed through "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Sweet Child o' Mine" to close the event, which honored Gianni and Donatella Versace. On February 23, 2007, Del James announced that Chinese Democracy's recording stage was finished, and the band had now moved onto mixing the album. However, this proved that the March 6 release date would be impossible to achieve, and the album once again had no scheduled release date.[40] Recent events On May 4, 2007 three more tracks leaked from Chinese Democracy; an updated version of "I.R.S.", "The Blues" and the title track. All three tracks had previously been played live. Guns N' Roses embarked on the 2007 leg of the Chinese Democracy World Tour in Mexico on June, followed by dates in Australia and Japan. The songs "Nice Boys" and a "Don't Cry" Bumblefoot solo rendition were played for the first time since the Use Your Illusion Tour. The tour ended on the twentieth anniversary of Appetite for Destruction's release date, in Osaka. During this tour, the band featured Axl Rose, Robin Finck, Ron Thal and Richard Fortus on guitars, Tommy Stinson on bass, Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman on keyboards and Frank Ferrer on drums. . Rose appears as a guest performer on three of the tracks on Sebastian Bach's album, Angel Down, which was released on November 20, 2007.[41] On March 26, 2008, Dr Pepper announced a plan to give everyone in America—except the band's former guitarists Slash and Buckethead—a free can of Dr Pepper if the band released Chinese Democracy before the end of 2008. Rose added, "As some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him."[42] [43] With the announcement from GNR in regards to a release date in November, Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing for Dr. Pepper, announced a free soda coupon campaign for 24 hours on Sunday, November 23, 2008.[44] The next day, on March 27, 2008, the band announced that they had hired a new management team, headed by Irving Azoff and Andy Gould.[45] On April 5, 2008, a picture of Robin Finck appeared on Nine Inch Nails web page,[46] under the title "Welcome Back!" starting the rumour of his possible reunion with Trent Reznor. Later, on April 11, 2008, Robin Finck expressed his happiness on playing again with NIN.[47] On April 20, 2008, on Guns N' Roses official website, Axl Rose expressed his surprise about Robin Finck's latest news but assure that the band was working with its management on the release of → Chinese Democracy and thanked the fans for the continuous shows of .[48] Nine tracks purported to be from Chinese Democracy were leaked to an online site on June 19, 2008 and quickly removed due to a cease-and-desist letter from the band's label. Six of the leaked tracks had surfaced previously in some form, while three were new. The leaked songs were fleshed out more than previously heard tracks.[49] [50] On July 14, 2008, Harmonix, in conjunction with MTV Games, officially announced the release of a new song from the → Chinese Democracy album, called "Shackler's Revenge", through their new game Rock Band 2. Also the song "Chinese Democracy" is being played on the bands website. In late August, speculation about the impending release of the album resurfaced, further fueled by separate reports from both Rolling Stone[51] and Billboard[52] about a November 25 release date as a Best Buy exclusive. This was finally confirmed October 22 when band management, Best Buy, and Interscope Geffen A&M Records officially issued a t press release confirming the much anticipated release of the album in the US on November 23 as a Best Buy exclusive. By November 13, 2008, ten days before the official release of the → Chinese Democracy album, the "Chinese Democracy" single topped the general iTunes Music Store chart in Greece, Norway, Portugal, Spain,

In addition to being the No. 1 song and No. 1 rock song in these countries, it became the No. 1 rock song on iTunes in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.[53] Chinese Democracy was released on November 22, 2008 in Europe and Australia, in North America on November 23, 2008 and in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2008[51] , becoming the band's sixth studio album and their first since 1993's → "The Spaghetti Incident?". In a 2007 interview, Rose's friend Sebastian Bach stated that Chinese Democracy will be the first installment in a trilogy of albums. Bach also remarked that Rose had told him the third, as yet untitled, album has been slated for 2012.[54] As of yet, no member of Guns N' Roses has confirmed this. During his time over at several of his Internet forums, Rose has made hints towards new albums and new songs, revealing several working titles.[55] In another 2007 interview, with the Artisan News Service on YouTube, Sebastian Bach also stated that Chinese Democracy will be the first of four new albums.[56] In recent years, there have been persistent rumors that the original lineup of Guns N' Roses would reunite. However, on February 6, 2009, Axl Rose effectively put to rest any rumors of the original lineup reuniting, in an interview with Billboard's Jonathan Cohen (his first in nine years)[57] , "I could see doing a song or so on the side with Izzy [Stradlin] or having him out [on tour] again. I'm not so comfortable with doing anything having more than one of the alumni. Maybe something with Duff [McKagan], but that's it, and not something I'd have to really get down into, as I'd get left with sorting it out and then blamed on top of it. So, no, not me." [58] . Rose would go on to state in the same interview that there is absolutely no chance of him ever reuniting with Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses: "What's clear is that one of the two of us will die before a reunion and however sad, ugly or unfortunate anyone views it, it is how it is. Those decisions were made a long time ago and reiterated year after year by one man."[59]

Chinese Democracy World Tour It has recently been anounced that some of the long awaited tour dates for their rumored world tour have indeed been brought to light. Here are the current dates released as of yet. Musical style The music of Guns N' Roses is a fusion of punk rock, blues-rock, heavy metal and classic rock and roll.[14] [4] In the 1990s, the band integrated keyed instruments (played by either Rose or Reed, and accompanied on tour by Teddy Andreadis) into the band, and for roughly half of the Use Your Illusion tour, added a horn section to the stage.[14] While Reed has remained on some of the Chinese Democracy demos, tours since 2000 have not included wind instruments, though the band has employed synthesized horns on some of their new songs. A heavy influence on both the image and sound of the band was Finnish band Hanoi Rocks (singer Michael Monroe and Rose have collaborated on various occasions).[14] Rose has stated that the band was massively inspired by bands like Queen,[60] AC/DC,[5] The Rolling Stones,[4] and Rose Tattoo[5] and also that the sound of Appetite for Destruction was influenced by AC/DC, Aerosmith, The New York Dolls and Hanoi Rocks.[61]

Legacy Guns N' Roses signed with a major label within eight months of their inception and topped national sales charts weeks after garnering late hours airplay on MTV. Appetite for Destruction is the highest-selling debut album of all time.[4] Their peers in the music industry often spoke highly of the band: Ozzy Osbourne called Guns N' Roses "the next Rolling Stones." In 2002, Q magazine named Guns N' Roses in their list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die". Also, the television network VH1 ranked Guns N' Roses ninth in its "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" special, and also ranked 11th on "Top 50 bands". Appetite for Destruction appeared in the Rolling Stone Magazine special issue "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Guns N' Roses #92 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". "Welcome To The Jungle" had also been voted "Best Rock Song".[62] The band has not been free of criticism.[4] [3] The flagrant alcohol and drug abuse by some of the group, and Axl's fondness of Charles Manson T-shirts, were used by the media to portray Guns N' Roses as a poor example and negative influence on their young fans. The long periods of time that the band took to release albums were also a source of heavy criticism (the band's second album, GN'R Lies, was actually an EP and an old EP packaged together, and one of the songs was an acoustic cover of one from the band's debut album, it took from 1987 to 1991 to come up with a proper follow up to Appetite for Destruction, and it took over 15 years to release Chinese Democracy). Frontman Axl Rose has become a source of both controversy and criticism since the other founding left the group.[4] [3] His constant elusiveness, such as the fact that he has not held a press conference since 1994, has led to several stories claiming he is suffering from bipolar disorder.[4] Music critics have blamed Rose for the break-up of the original group, have criticized him for continuing the band after the original had departed and have questioned the constant change in band . They also cite his neurotic behavior and sense of perfectionism as a cause of personal conflict and the long delays between albums.

Appetite for Destruction is the debut studio album by American hard rock band → Guns N' Roses. Released in 1987 (see 1987 in music), it was well-received by critics and topped the American Billboard 200 chart. As of September

Appetite for Destruction 2008, the album has been certified diamond (plus 18x platinum) by the RIAA,[8] accumulating worldwide sales in excess of twenty-eight million as of October 2008.[9] The album still remains the fastest-selling debut album in history.[10]

Origins Axl Rose stated in 1988 that many of the songs featured on the album had been written while the band had been performing on the Los Angeles club circuit, and a number of songs that would be featured on later Guns N' Roses albums were considered for Appetite for Destruction, such as "Back Off Bitch," "You Could Be Mine" and "Don't Cry".[11] While the songwriting credits are credited to all five band , many of the songs began as solo tracks that individual band wrote separate from the band, only to be completed later. These songs include "It's So Easy" (McKagan) and "Think About You" (Stradlin). "Rocket Queen" was an unfinished Slash/Adler song that was written from their earlier band Road Crew, whereas "Anything Goes", written by Hollywood Rose and included in their compilation album The Roots of Guns N' Roses, was later re-written for Appetite. Other songs on the album reflect the band's reaction to the debauchery of the L.A. rock and roll underground, like "Welcome to the Jungle" (Rose wrote the lyrics while in Seattle about an incident in New York City).[12] Some of the songs focus on the band ' younger years, like "Out ta Get Me", which focuses on lead singer Axl Rose's constant trouble with the law as a youth in Indiana.[13] The band also based songs off of their assorted female companions, reflected in the songs "Sweet Child o' Mine," "Think About You," "My Michelle," "You're Crazy," and "Rocket Queen."

Song information Out ta Get Me This is the fourth track on the album. Its lyrics focus on lead singer Axl Rose's constant trouble with the law as a youth in Indiana. Slash describes it as being written even more quickly than "Welcome to the Jungle", which means it was written in under three hours.[13]

You're Crazy "You're Crazy" is the tenth track on the album. It was originally written as an acoustic song, but was revamped for Appetite for Destruction[14] (this version is one of the fastest songs in the band's catalog). The slower, acoustic version was later recorded for → G N' R Lies; this version has also been performed live with electric guitars (as heard on their live album). A working title for the song was "Fucking Crazy".[14]

Anything Goes "Anything Goes" is the next-to-last track on the album. It was one of the earliest-written songs by the band, having been written in 1981.[15] It was originally named "My Way, Your Way"

Packaging The album's original cover art, based on the Robert Williams' painting "Appetite for Destruction", depicted a robotic rapist about to be punished by a metal avenger. After several music retailers refused to stock the album, the label compromised and put the controversial cover art inside, replacing it with an image depicting a cross and skulls of the five band (designed by Billy White Jr., originally as a tattoo), each skull representing one member of the

band: Izzy Stradlin, top skull; Steven Adler, left skull; Axl Rose, center skull; Duff McKagan, right skull; and Slash, bottom skull. The photographs used for the back of the album and liner notes were taken by Robert John. The original cover was supposed to be on the 2008 re-pressing of the vinyl, though the record label replaced it with the "Skulls" art at the last minute. The re-pressing of the vinyl, though, is the first Guns N' Roses release to have the Parental Advisory label printed on the artwork; previously, like on the CD, this was a sticker on the cellophane wrap and later (on the CD and cassette releases) on the case itself.

In 1989 Rolling Stone ranked Appetite for Destruction as the 20th best album of the 1980s. The same magazine later ranked it at sixty-one on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[16] In 2001, Q magazine named Appetite for Destruction as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time.[17] In 2004, Q magazine also named Appetite for Destruction as one of the greatest Classic Rock Albums Ever.[18] In 2003, VH1 named Appetite for Destruction the 42nd Greatest Album of All Time.[19]

• In 2002, Pitchfork Media ranked Appetite for Destruction 59th on their Top 100 Albums of the 1980s.[20] • It was ranked 18 in Spin magazine's "100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005".[21] • Kerrang! magazine recently compiled a 100 Greatest Rock Albums Ever list of which Appetite for Destruction was ranked #1.[22] • In 2004 the album was voted number 1 by fans in Metal Hammer magazine's greatest albums of all time list. • Rolling Stone devoted their cover to the album's 20th Anniversary, July 2007.[23] • The album was ranked 32 on Rock Hall of Fame's 'definitive 200' album list, developed by the NARM, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers.[24] • Nike dedicated an SB Dunk (shoe design) to the album.

Background and recording The first four tracks consist of the previously released EP → Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide. The last four songs were recorded with acoustic guitars. They were written and recorded in only a few studio sessions (with the exception of "You're Crazy", which appeared in an alternate version on → Appetite for Destruction), which producer Mike Clink called "one of those magical rock and roll history moments". In later interviews, Axl Rose stated that while he loved how the band sounded on the last four songs, he hated the sound of his voice. Rose recalled that his voice was husky and scratchy from the band's lengthy touring at the time, and if he could he would've re-recorded his vocal tracks in a separate session. "You're Crazy" had been released previously on the band's debut album, Appetite for Destruction and was now recorded as written originally. "Mama Kin" is an Aerosmith cover, originally recorded on their 1973 debut album. "Nice Boys" is a Rose Tattoo cover.

Packaging The cover is a parody of tabloid newspapers as are the liner notes. The LP cover art underwent several minor modifications when the title was released on CD. First, in the bottom left corner reading "LIES LIES LIES" originally read "Wife-beating has been around for 10,000 years." Secondly, instead of "Elephant gives birth to midget", the original headline reads, "Ladies, welcome to the Dark Ages". Many copies of the original LP release also contained an uncensored picture of a nude model on the inner LP sleeve.[5] The cover art also bears a resemblance to John Lennon's Sometime In New York City, an album that contains Lennon's controversial Woman Is the Nigger of the World - a song Axl has cited when defending his use of the word "nigger" in One In A Million. [6] Coincidently, half of Sometime In New York City also contains "live" material recorded two years earlier.

Use Your Illusion I is the third studio album by hard rock band → Guns N' Roses. It was the first of two albums released in conjunction with the Use Your Illusion Tour, the other named → Use Your Illusion II, thus they are sometimes seen together as a double album. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts, selling 685,000 copies in its first week, behind Use Your Illusion II's first week sales of 770,000.[5] Each of the Use Your Illusion albums have been certified 12x platinum by the RIAA.[6] Illusion I has sold 24 million copies worldwide. Spader Music Magazine listed the album in one of its greatest albums columns.[7]

Overview The Use Your Illusion albums represent a turning point in the sound of Guns N' Roses. Although they did not abandon the hard rock tendencies vivid in their first album, → Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusion I demonstrated, for the first time, more or less, elements of blues, classical music, and country. For example, lead singer Axl Rose plays the piano on several tracks of both albums. In addition, with the Use Your Illusion Tour, both the music and stage presence of the band became more theatrical, in the tradition of progressive rock. This fact is evidenced by the numerous music videos produced in conjunction with these albums. Use Your Illusion I contains two of the three songs, "November Rain" and "Don't Cry," whose videos are generally held by fans to be part of a trilogy. The third song, "Estranged," is on Use Your Illusion II. A number of songs on the album were written in the band's early days, but were not included on Appetite for Destruction but can be found on the popular bootlegged so-called 'Rumbo Tapes', an album of early demo tapes. "Back Off Bitch," "Bad Obsession," "Don't Cry" (referred to by Rose during the ensuing tour as 'the first song [they] ever wrote together'), "November Rain," and "The Garden" are considered part of this group. There is also a cover of "Live and Let Die." Besides stylistic differences, another new aspect seen in Use Your Illusion I was longer songs. "November Rain," an epic ballad, is nearly 9 minutes long, and "Coma" is more than 10 minutes long. Another change was the presence of tracks sung by other of the band (even though certain songs from Appetite for Destruction and → G N' R Lies featured other on duet vocals): lead vocals on "Dust N' Bones," "You Ain't The First" and "Double Talkin' Jive" are performed by rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin (on Use Your Illusion II, Stradlin' sings "14 Years" and bassist Duff McKagan sings "So Fine"). The band had some difficulty achieving the final sound of the album, especially during the mixing stages of the production of both albums. According to a 1991 cover story by Rolling Stone magazine, after mixing 21 tracks with engineer/producer Bob Clearmountain, the band decided to scrap the mixes and start from scratch with engineer Bill Price of Sex Pistols fame.[8] Slash has stated that most of the material for the album was written on acoustics in a couple of nights at his house (the Walnut House), after several months of non-productivity.[9]

Cover The cover art of both "Use Your Illusion" albums is a detail of Raphael's painting "The School of Athens." The highlighted figure, unlike many of those in the painting, has not been identified with any specific philosopher. The only difference in the artwork between Use Your Illusion I and II is the color scheme used for each album. Use Your Illusion I uses the warm colors red and yellow, and has for the most part an angrier, heavier sound; Use Your Illusion II uses the cool colors blue and purple and has a softer, more bluesy sound. Both covers are the work of Estonian-American artist Mark Kostabi.

Right Next Door to Hell

Use Your Illusion I Timo Caltia (real name Timo Kaltio) who participated writing this song is a Finnish guitarist, songwriter and guitar-tech expert who once worked with Hanoi Rocks. He had played a chorus riff of the song at his home while Stradlin visited there. Caltia was bothered by his irritating neighbour and was trying to make a verse including words "living next door to hell". Later Stradlin asked a permission to take the riff for his new song. Royalties from this song helped Caltia to buy himself a new house in London.

Dust N' Bones This is the second track on Use Your Illusion I, it was written by Slash, Stradlin and McKagan. It is the first song on the album that is fully sung by Izzy Stradlin doing lead vocals. It is also the first song to feature Dizzy Reed on Piano.

You Ain't the First "You Ain't the First" is the sixth track on the album. Unlike most tracks on the album, electric guitars are nowhere to be found in the song - instead, acoustic guitars are used, similar to side two of → G N' R Lies, and also giving the song a folk rock feel, which is added to by the tambourine (played by Tim Doyle). The song is also notable for being the only song in the band's catalogue that is entirely in waltz time. It is also fully sung by Izzy Stradlin.[10]

Bad Obsession "Bad Obsession" is track seven on the album. It was written by Izzy Stradlin (the band's then-rhythm guitarist) and West Arkeen. The song is about tackling drug abuse and addiction, which had haunted the band since they had become famous. Michael Monroe, lead singer of Hanoi Rocks and a big influence on Guns N' Roses, plays the harmonica and tenor saxophone on the studio version, which is 5:28 long. A live version from the Tokyo Dome was featured on the Use Your Illusion 1 DVD as song number five.

Back Off Bitch This is track eight on Use Your Illusion I. However, it was written before their 1987 debut album, → Appetite for Destruction. The lyrics of the song did not help the band's image of being misogynistic. In a 1992 interview with Rolling Stone, Axl said that "Back Off Bitch" was a "10-year old song" at the time. Therefore, it can be assumed that the song predates the formation of the group. The song was also played during Guns N' Roses concerts before the release of → Appetite for Destruction. The song was performed live several times in 1986 [11] before the release of Appetite for Destruction but never made the album. It was also demoed several times by the band during this period [12]. This is one of very few Guns N' Roses songs to feature Izzy Stradlin playing a longer guitar solo. This solo opens the album version. The solo is more complex than the intro played on earlier live versions.

Double Talkin 'Jive This is the ninth track on the album, it was written by Stradlin and fully sung by him. At the end of the song there is a short acoustic guitar solo. Interestingly, live performances of this song were stretched from it's original three minute lenght to over eight minutes long.

Garden of Eden According to Slash, the song, which appears as track twelve, was written while the band was rehearsing for an extended period of time in Chicago.[13] There is a music video of the song, which consists of one continuous shot which features a close-up of Rose with the band playing in the background, whilst keyboardist Dizzy Reed and Teddy Andreadis (who played the harmonica for

the band during the Use Your Illusion Tour) are seen dancing in the background. There are two versions of the video, both made in 1992, one has paper flying through the air (this is the one mostly found on music video sites like Yahoo Music). The other version has lyrics, complete with a "follow-the-bouncing-ball", but with no paper flying around . This is the version that is on the Guns N' Roses music video compilation "Welcome to the Videos".

Don't Damn Me "Don't Damn Me" is the thirteenth track on the album. This is the only song on Use Your Illusion I that was never performed live.[14]

Bad Apples "Bad Apples" is the fourteenth track on the album. It has only been performed live twice.[15] According to Slash, the song was written while the band was rehearsing for an extended period of time in Chicago.[16]

Dead Horse Dead Horse is the fifteenth track on the album, it was performed live several times during the → Use Your Illusion World Tour and hasn't been performed live since that tour. Axl used to play the acoustic guitar on the stage when it was performed live. It is also one of the few songs on the album that Axl Rose wrote solo. Although the song was never released as a single, a music video was made.

Coma This song is the sixteenth and final track on the album. It was written by Rose and Slash. It is the longest song done by the band at 10:13, even though it lacks choruses. It has only been performed live four times, possibly due to its length and the strain it causes Rose singing it.

Overview The Use Your Illusion albums were a stylistic turning point for Guns N' Roses (see → Use Your Illusion I for discussion). In addition, Use Your Illusion II is more political than most of their previous work, with songs like "Civil War," a cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and "Get in the Ring" dealing respectively with the topics of violence, law enforcement, and media bias. The thematic material deals less with drug use than previous Guns N' Roses albums. Use Your Illusion I featured mostly songs pre-Appetite For Destruction (with notable exceptions) while Use Your Illusion II featured more tracks written during and after Appetite For Destruction. The band's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" had been released almost a year earlier on the Days of Thunder soundtrack. "Civil War" was debuted at the 1990 Farm Aid concert. That concert also featured Guns N' Roses playing a cover of the U.K. Subs song "Down on the Farm." "Civil War" was released as a B-side to "You Could Be Mine." The song was also released on a charity album called Nobody's Child. The album was a fund-raising compilation for Romanian orphans. The first single, "You Could Be Mine," was released in July 1991 and is featured in the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The song was not released on the actual T2 soundtrack. The band also filmed a video featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in character as the Terminator, and a loose plot featuring Axl Rose himself as its "target." The original subject matter of the song dealt with Izzy Stradlin's failed relationship with his ex-girlfriend Angela Nicoletti. The Use Your Illusion albums can be taken as a single cohesive work, and certain elements of Use Your Illusion II underscore this intent. For instance, both albums have a version of the song "Don't Cry." Both albums also have one cover song; "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney (Use Your Illusion I) and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan (Use Your Illusion II). Each of them also has at least one track sung by other of the band: lead vocals on "So Fine" are performed by bassist Duff McKagan and the song was dedicated to Johnny Thunders, who died from a drug overdose before the recording of the album. Lead vocals on "14 Years" are performed by Izzy Stradlin (Izzy also sings "Dust N' Bones," "You Ain't The First" and "Double Talkin' Jive" on Use Your Illusion I). The song "Get in the Ring" finds the band lashing out at a career's worth of critics and enemies. Among those referred to by name are editors of several entertainment magazines. "My World," the final track, was a surprise to a few of the band. The track was essentially an Axl Rose solo, and most of the did not even know it existed until the album was released. To achieve the final mix of the album, the band had some difficulty, especially during the mixing stages of the production of both albums. Song information Shotgun Blues This song was written by Axl Rose, it is the sixth track on the album, and it doesn't feature Izzy Stradlin on guitar, instead Rose plays Rhythm Guitar and Stradlin performs backing vocals on the Chorus. This song was never performed live.

Breakdown "Breakdown" is the seventh track on the album. Axl Rose has stated that the vocal ending to the song is the only thing he was not satisfied with on the Use Your Illusion albums.[9] Additionally, Slash has stated that it was one of the most complicated songs to record on the album. According to him, the guitar, drum , and piano parts were hard to synchronize--drummer Matt Sorum "lost it" a couple of times trying to get the drums just right.[10]

Locomotive "Locomotive" (subtitled "Complicity") is the ninth track on the album. Slash stated "Locomotive" is played on a Gibson Explorer, saying, "What I do is turn the tone knob down."[11] He also stated that it was written in a house he and Izzy Stradlin rented in Hollywood Hills following the Appetite for Destruction tours.[12] A portion of a line from "Locomotive" is used as the title of the dual album: "You can use your illusion/let it take you where it may." All the guitars played on this song were done by Slash. Izzy Stradlin does not appear on the track[13] .

So Fine "So Fine" is the tenth track on the album. The song is not only sung by bass guitarist Duff McKagan, but it was written by him as a tribute to the deceased punk rock musician Johnny Thunders.[14]

My World "My World" is the fourteenth and final track on the album, it was a surprise to other of the band as they didn't know it existed until after the albums release, it is an Axl Rose solo track with drum and keyboard sounds added in and only Rose singing it. It has the length of 1:25 the shortest Guns N' Roses song, it was never played live.

In popular culture and movies The title of the album was the focus of a joke on an episode of the sitcom Arrested Development that aired well over a decade after the CD's release. When magician Tony Wonder (played by Ben Stiller) had to come up with a name for his home video, he decided to name it Use Your Illusion II, citing that Use Your Illusion I had already been taken, apparently unaware of the fact that Use Your Illusion II is also the name of an album. In the end, he used the title Use Your Allusion. The album was featured in Terminator Salvation, in which John Connor finds the album which he listened to when he was younger. The song "You Could Be Mine" was played in a scene. [16]

Miscellaneous • One of the lines from the song, "You Could Be Mine", "With your bitch slap-rappin' and your cocaine tongue, You get nuthin' done" also appears in the liner notes from → Appetite for Destruction. • In the liner notes is written Ain't It Fun a song they would cover on → "The Spaghetti Incident?".

"The Spaghetti Incident?" is the fifth album by hard rock band → Guns N' Roses. The album is unique for the band, consisting entirely of cover versions, mostly of punk and glam rock songs of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Many of the tracks were recorded with original Guns N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin during the → Use Your Illusion I and → II sessions and then were later re-recorded by Gilby Clarke.[4] Those tracks were previously intended to be included in a combined Use Your Illusion album, consisting of three (or possibly even four) discs, instead of the two separate discs they ended up being.

"The Spaghetti Incident?" In 1992, the band prepared to release the leftover cover tracks as an EP, with then-Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke replacing Stradlin's guitar tracks. They later decided on making the album a full release and recorded several more tracks for it. [5] Then-Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan sings on many of the album's tracks and Hanoi Rocks frontman (and Axl Rose's idol) Michael Monroe appears on "Ain't It Fun" as a guest vocalist. This was the last → Guns N' Roses album to feature lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum as well as the only album to feature Gilby Clarke. "The Spaghetti Incident?" debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, selling about 190,000 albums in its first week of release, significantly less than their previous releases.[6]

Album title The title is an inside-joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as "the Spaghetti Incident". The meaning was explained by drummer Matt Sorum in a 1994 interview with Much Music and confirmed by Slash in his autobiography, Slash. The title may also be a play on the title of the 1991 film The Linguini Incident. During a discussion between Rose, Slash and the album's cover designer in the "Making of Estranged" video, it is made clear that the correct form of the title is within quotation marks and with a question mark.

Original release The album was released shortly after the conclusion of the Use Your Illusion World Tour which had lasted until mid 1993. The vinyl copy of the album was released in clear plastic orange, and the CD was released with color designs and markings: black concentric rings around the outer edge, and an indigo and blood-red depiction of an evil jack-o-lantern eating spaghetti out of a hollowed-out, decapitated head in the center, which would later be changed (in the 1997 reissue) to simply a plain silver colored CD.

Reception In its first week of sales "The Spaghetti Incident?" sold about 190,000 copies and debuted at number #4 on the Billboard 200, selling far less than their other releases, the album has failed to match the success of any other Guns N' Roses album, it did not increase the popularity within the band, most reviews of the album were rated average saying "the covers are just of mostly punk songs that really aren't that good". Reasons contributed the lower sales was the lack of promotion the band had done for the album, they weren't performing or touring, the other were busy focusing on side projects, the first two singles were radio only singles, the third single Since I Don't Have You was the only single from the album where a music video was made.

Controversy Despite protests from Rose's bandmates, an und cover of Charles Manson's song "Look at Your Game, Girl" was included on the album at Rose's request. The CD release gave no track number to the song - it could only be found by listening through the dead air left after the last documented track on the album, on track 12. In early 2000, Rose said that he would remove "Look at Your Game, Girl" from re-issues of the album, citing that critics and popular media misinterpreted his interest in Manson and that a misunderstanding public no longer deserved to hear it.[7] However, the song is still present on the album, and in recent re-issues, "Look at Your Game, Girl" has been added as a separate, 13th track.

Live The first track, "Since I Don't Have You" was performed a few times as an intro to songs Sweet Child O' Mine or Paradise City in 1992 and 1993. "Down on the Farm" was performed once in its full length during the 1990 performance in the Farm Aid IV show it was also played a few times during the → Chinese Democracy Tour in 2006. The band performed "Hair of the Dog" once in 1988, and another time in 1990, during the only known GAK (band featuring of Guns, Metallica and Skid Row) performance. "Attitude" was performed frequently during the Use Your Illusion world tour, and Duff still plays it in Loaded and his solo career. Other songs played live by him are: "New Rose", "You Can't Put your Arm Around a Memory" and "Raw Power". The others songs were never played live by Guns N' Roses, but might have been played by some of the ' side projects, like Matt Sorum's supergroup Camp Freddy, that plays cover versions of famous songs.

Chinese Democracy Chinese Democracy is the sixth studio album by American rock band → Guns N' Roses. It was released on November 23, 2008, worldwide, except in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2008.[10] It is the band's first studio album since 1993's → "The Spaghetti Incident?", and their first album of original studio material since the simultaneous release of → Use Your Illusion I and → II in September 1991.

Background Guns N' Roses began to write and record new music around 1995-1996. Bassist Duff McKagan is quoted as saying, "[the] band was so stoned at that point that nothing got finished".[11] Slash has criticized Axl Rose for making the band seem "like a dictatorship".[12] Slash quit the band in 1996, with drummer Matt Sorum and McKagan both leaving soon afterwards.[13] Slash was replaced by Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Robin Finck, ex-Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson replaced McKagan, and Josh Freese ed as the drummer. In early 1998, the band — which comprised Rose, Finck, Stinson and Freese along with long-time Guns N' Roses associate Paul Tobias, keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman — began recording at Rumbo Recorders, a state-of-the-art studio in the San Fernando Valley where Guns N' Roses had partially recorded parts for their debut album, → Appetite for Destruction. During this time, Geffen paid Rose $1 million to try to finish the album, with a further $1 million if he handed it in to them by March 1, 1999.[12] In 2000, Rose hired avant-garde metal guitarist Buckethead, and drummer Bryan "Brain" Mantia to replace the departed Freese. Later on in 2000, Finck reed the band as the third guitarist. On January 1, 2001, Guns N' Roses played their first concert in over seven years at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was followed by their headlining performance at Rock in Rio III on January 14, 2001 in front of 190,000 people.[14] On August 29, 2002, the band made a surprise visit to the MTV Video Music Awards, playing old songs along with a new "Madagascar" to an ecstatic New York crowd.[15] Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal replaced the departed guitarist Buckethead and touring resumed in May 2006, with Bumblefoot adding guitar tracks to the album between legs of touring throughout the year. Drummer Frank Ferrer replaced departed Brain in July and added his drum tracks to the album. On December 14, 2006, Rose published an open letter to the band's fans on their website, claiming that remaining tour's shows were taking up time the band needed to finish recording Chinese Democracy. Rose also revealed that the band had parted company with their manager Merck Mercuriadis, implying that the reason Guns N' Roses at 2006's Festival, attending the album was not released in 2006 was Mercuriadis's fault (many as a part of the Chinese Democracy tour. times throughout 2006, Rose had said the album would be released that year). In the letter, Rose announced a tentative release date of March 6, 2007 for the album; however, the album was once again delayed.[16] [17] On February 22, 2007, the band's road manager, Del James, announced that all recording for the album had been completed and it was in the mixing process, James stated that there was no release date for the album but that things appeared to be moving on after a number of delays.[18] On September 14, 2008, "Shackler's Revenge" was released on the music video game Rock Band 2, making it the band's first official release of new material since 1999's "Oh My God".[19] "Shackler's Revenge" was shortly followed by another release, "If the World", which, according to Rolling Stone, plays during the closing credits of Body of Lies. A firm release date was announced by Billboard in October, 2008, set for November 23.[20] In the US, the retail release is sold exclusively through Best Buy. The first single from the album, "Chinese Democracy", was released on October 22, 2008,[21] followed by the second single "Better" on November 17, 2008. The album was released as able content for the Rock Band series on April 14, 2009.[22]

Production Long time Guns N' Roses [23] producer Mike Clink was reported to have worked on the album during its conception. Moby and Youth turned down offers to work on the album.[24] According to Rolling Stone, engineer Andy Wallace, who had worked on Nirvana's Nevermind, was working on the album in 2006. A source close to Guns N' Roses is quoted as saying "we're absolutely delighted with the mixes".[25] Other producers who have worked on the album include Roy Thomas Baker, Bob Ezrin and Sean Beavan.[26]

Collaborations The band has worked with numerous other artists during Chinese Democracy [27]recording process; including guitarists Brian May and Dave Navarro.[28] [29] May recorded the lead guitar parts for the leaked song "Catcher In the Rye" in 1999;[28] however, May is not credited in the finished album.[30] May's performances were removed in the final release of the album. Composers Marco Beltrami and Paul Buckmaster worked on orchestral arrangements for the album in the early 2000s.[29] In January 2007, former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach recorded backing vocals for a song called "Sorry" at Electric Lady Studios.[31] Harpist Patti Hood has also recorded parts for the album.[32]

Sound In 1999, the industrial metal song "Oh My God" was released on the End of Days soundtrack. It featured current Guns N' Roses [23] Axl Rose [23]Dizzy Reed [23]Chris Pitman [23] and Tommy Stinson [23] ,along with former Paul Tobias, Robin Finck, and Josh Freese. Dave Navarro and Gary Sunshine also recorded guitar parts for the song. "Oh My God" was unpopular upon its release and was described by Allmusic as "a less than satisfying comeback".[12] [33] The sound of Chinese Democracy [23]was often reported to be industrial rock music similar to Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, a style of which Rose had long been a fan. However, in a 2001 interview with an Argentine radio station, Rose stated the album wasn't industrial, and would vary in styles: It is not industrial, the closest thing to that was perhaps "Oh My God", but there are some songs that won't be on the album that were this way. There will be all kinds of styles, many influences as blues, mixed in the songs.[34] In 2003, DJ Eddie Trunk spoke about the demo of "I.R.S.", which was leaked on his radio show: It reminded me of Use Your Illusion-era stuff, with some modern flairs to it. The song had a loop track in the beginning, but then, when it kicked in, it was that same dramatic Guns N' Roses hard rock.[35] During the launch party for Korn's 2006 tour, Rose conducted an interview with Rolling Stone and told the magazine: It's a very complex record, I'm trying to do something different. Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns N' Roses.' But you'll like at least a few songs on there.[36] In a Rolling Stone article in 2006, former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach described the album as "epic" and "mind-blowing" and added: It's a very cool album - it's badass with killer screams, killer guitar riffs, but it's got a totally modern sound. The word for it is ‘grand.' It's fucking epic. He's reinvented himself yet again.[37] Bach has also described the album as having "the rawness and the power of → Appetite for Destruction, but it also has the grandiosity of 'November Rain'."[38] He went on to describe the song "Sorry", which he sings backing vocals on: There's this one song called ‘Sorry' that's almost like doom metal with Axl singing really clean over this grinding, slow beat that is fucking mean, I cannot get it out of my head.[37]

Delays According to a March 2005 New York Times article, production costs for the album have reached $13 million, making it probably the most expensive recording "never made."[12] Then-Guns N' Roses manager Merck Mercuriadis, however, rejected the claims made by the article in a letter and claimed that the newspaper's sources had not been involved with the project for "six to nine years".[39] Rose issued a press release on Guns N' Roses' official website on December 14, 2006. Entitled "An open letter to the fans from Axl", Rose announced the cancellation of four concerts that were scheduled for January 2007. He stated that if the band fulfilled the concerts, "valuable time needed by the band and record company for the proper setup and release of the album Chinese Democracy would have been lost". Also in the letter, he confirmed that Guns N' Roses had parted company with Mercuriadis. Rose blamed much of the album's delay on Mercuriadis. Rose also announced a tentative release date for Chinese Democracy of March 6, 2007, and remarked that it was the first time the band had publicly named a release date for the album.[16] Despite Rose's announcement, the album was once again delayed. On February 22, 2007, the band's road manager, Del James, issued a press release definitively stating that all recording for the album had been completed. James elaborated, "There is no official release date, as the band is currently mixing, but after some delays and scheduling difficulties, things appear to be moving along."[18] In a 2007 interview, Sebastian Bach claimed Rose had planned to have the album released by Christmas 2007: "I know Axl was very serious about putting something out before Christmas. He was talking to me about it. He was talking about finishing liner notes." Bach also said that Chinese Democracy's delay might be because of business problems: "I think there's a lot of business shit that goes on with him. It's just not as easy. It's a little more complicated than people think."[40] Little was said about the record after this, and 2007 saw no official release of the new material. In January 2008, rumors arose that Chinese Democracy had been handed over to Geffen Records, but had been delayed because the label and Rose could not agree on the marketing of the album.[41] Eddie Trunk also claimed Geffen might have the album: "I hear the new GNR CD is actually done, but the delay in release is not the bands [sic] issues but the label. There is so much money tied up in this record that in todays [sic] business it will be virtually impossible to be profitable, meaning the label might want to sell it off but can not find a buyer since nobody buys CDs anymore. Problem might not be Axl this time around and might keep this CD in limbo for more years to come. Hopefully it gets resolved."[42] However, in a February 2008 interview with Classic Rock Magazine, Rose's personal manager, Beta Lebeis, debunked Trunk's suggestion and was quoted as saying, "We're currently in negotiations with the record label".[43]

Controversy and lawsuits Greatest Hits release In 2004, Geffen Records released → Greatest Hits. Rose, along with former Slash and Duff McKagan, attempted to block the album's release. They filed a lawsuit against Geffen, claiming the album was unauthorized and would damage the band's reputation. Rose also claimed it would distract the band from completing Chinese Democracy. A week before the scheduled release, a judge denied their request for an injunction and the album was released.[44] Greatest Hits was #1 in the UK for two weeks and reached #3 on the Billboard 200. It remained on the Billboard 200 for over two years and has sold over four million units domestically.[45]

Dr Pepper promotion On March 26, 2008, various media outlets reported that Dr Pepper would offer a free can of Dr Pepper to everyone in America—excluding former Guns N' Roses guitarists Buckethead and Slash—if the band released Chinese Democracy in 2008.[46] [47] Later on March 26, Rose replied to Dr Pepper on Guns N' Roses' official website and spoke of his surprise at Dr Pepper's . Rose also said he would share his Dr Pepper with Buckethead as "some of Buckethead's performances are on [Chinese Democracy]".[48] After it was announced that the album would be released in 2008, Dr Pepper confirmed that it would uphold its pledge.[49] However, Dr Pepper's online distribution of free coupons upon the album's release November 23, 2008 proved less than adequate. Lawyers for the band threatened Dr Pepper's parent company with a lawsuit just two days after the album's release. In a letter to Dr Pepper, Rose's lawyer Alan Gutman said "The redemption scheme your company clumsily implemented for this offer was an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, ruined Chinese Democracy's release."[50] Rose's lawyer also demanded that the company make a full-page apology that would appear in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.[51] [52] Later, in an online interview with a fan message forum, Axl stated he specifically told his lawyers it was a non-issue and was taken off-guard by their actions. He believed they should be focused on the record release.[53]

Censorship in the People's Republic of China The album is banned in the People's Republic of China, reportedly because of supposed criticism in its title track about the Government of the People's Republic of China and a reference to the Falun Gong.[54] The Chinese government said through media that it "turns its spear point on China".[55] [56]

Schnauss Lawsuit In October 2009, electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss's record labels, Independiente and Domino, sued Guns N' Roses, alleging that the band had committed copyright infringement by using portions of his compositions in the song "Riad 'n the Bedouins".[57]

Release and reception Chinese Democracy debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, selling about 261,000 copies in its first week of sales, well below expectations.[58] [59] [60] The album also debuted at #2 on the UK Albums Chart,[61] coming in behind The Killers' album Day & Age. Chinese Democracy was certified Platinum by the RIAA on February 3, 2009[62] and according to Nielsen SoundScan, has sold 537,000 copies in the United States, and over 5.1 million copies worldwide.[63] There has been a lot of finger pointing within the industry as to why the album hasn't sold up to expectations.[63] Record executives at Geffen have been upset with Rose for not doing any promotion or publicity work for Chinese Democracy, feeling that the album would have sold better had Rose been around to promote it.[59] It was reported that he had been missing for at least two months around the time of the album's release, and had not returned any phone calls or other requests.[64] Rose broke his silence on the Guns N' Roses message boards on December 11, addressing topics concerning the status of his relationships with former of the band, as well as stating that a video for the song "Better" would be released shortly.[65] U.S. exclusive retailer Best Buy's limited promotional campaign and disorganization have also been blamed for the album's sluggish sales.[66] There were no midnight sales for the album's release, and some Best Buy locations had no vinyl records or promotional displays up on the release day.[66] According to Rolling Stone writer Chris Steffen, going into Best Buy on November 23, "you'd be hard-pressed to know it was one of the most hyped release days of the century."[66]

Chinese Democracy placed at number 12 on the "Top 50 Albums of 2008" list for Rolling Stone[67] and number 3 on "Top 50 Albums of 2008" for Classic Rock magazine. On February 28, 2009, in an interview between Axl Rose and Del James on the band's website, when asked about when the next album will be replied angrily, "Have no idea and don't care. Hopefully, we'll be working 'Chinese' for a good bit. Of course there's the same idiots that have been around forever already demanding release dates."

Live Era: '87-'93 is a double live album by hard rock band → Guns N' Roses, released on November 23, 1999. The album was the first official Guns N' Roses release since → "The Spaghetti Incident?" in 1993. Former guitarist Slash notes that the album is "not pretty and there are a lot of mistakes, but this is Guns N' Roses, not the fucking Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's as honest as it gets."[3]

Album The dates and locations of the tracks are not revealed in the liner notes, and are only referred to simply as being "Recorded across the universe between 1987 and 1993". However, the majority of the tracks on the two CDs are believed to be sourced from the extensive Use Your Illusion Tour of 1991-1993.[4] Axl Rose is alleged to have communicated with former → Guns N' Roses Slash and Duff McKagan, through intermediaries only, in selecting the track list. In an interview Slash stated that "the live album was one of the easiest projects we all worked on. I didn't actually see Axl, but we communicated via the powers that be."[5] Matt Sorum, the band's drummer from 1990-1997, and Gilby Clarke, rhythm guitarist in the years 1992-1994, are not credited as band in the liner notes, but as "additional musicians". It is suspected that both are not credited as "main band " due to their sour departure from Axl Rose and the band. Original drummer Steven Adler,

who plays sporadically on the album, is credited as a "main band member", instead. Two popular live songs "Live and Let Die" and "Civil War" which were both played heavily during the Use Your Illusion Tour are omitted from this release, while songs that were played to a much lesser extent on the tour ("Pretty Tied Up" and "Move to the City") are included. The Japanese and vinyl versions of the album contain a rare performance of "Coma", Guns N' Roses' longest song to date.

Use Your Illusion is a → Guns N' Roses compilation album that is mixed from the → Use Your Illusion I & → II albums (single disc version), and has only been released in the United States. The tracklist is composed mostly of songs lacking profanity (except for one use of "bullshit" in "14 Years"). This was done to allow its sale at Wal-Mart, which does not retail albums with a Parental Advisory warning, although they have been known to carry the clean versions of such albums. However, not all songs without profanity were chosen to appear on this compilation (one notable absence is "So Fine", the only non-cover song by the band with Duff McKagan on lead vocals; he wrote it as a tribute to his recently-deceased idol Johnny Thunders). "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" appears in an edited version, without Josh Richman's speech (You just better start sniffin' your own rank subjugation jack 'cause it's just you against your tattered libido, the bank and the mortician, forever man and it wouldn't be luck if you could get out of life alive), removed for unknown reasons. Therefore, track length is reduced to 05:20, instead of 05:36 from the version included in Use Your Illusion II.

Greatest Hits is a compilation album by American hard rock band → Guns N' Roses, released on March 23, 2004. The album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart[5] and number three on the Billboard 200 chart.[6] Despite some criticisms towards the track listing by fans, and by Axl Rose and ex-Guns N' Roses , who filed a t lawsuit to try to prevent the release of the album,[7] the album has proven a popular seller, selling 4.5 million copies in the United States to date. Greatest Hits became Guns N' Roses' second-longest charting album in their homeland (after → Appetite for Destruction), finally dropping out of the chart in November 2006 following a 138-week stay.[8] Universal Records' response to Rose's opposition to the record was that he had been given adequate time to supply them with a record but had failed to do so, and so they had produced their own Guns N' Roses record instead. Critics of the compilation were somewhat disappointed, as many other popular songs from Appetite for Destruction were neglected from this release, namely "Mr. Brownstone", "It's So Easy" and "Nightrain", as well as the → G N' R Lies track "Used to Love Her". Also notable is the exclusion of the → Use Your Illusion II single "Estranged". The presence of too many covers (5 out of 14 tracks) was also criticized.

Notes • "Ain't It Fun" was censored for the compilation: "Ain't it fun when you tell her she's just a cunt" became "Ain't it fun when you tell her she's just a–", with guitar notes at 3:36 instead of the final word in the line. This version had never been officially released before, but had been broadcast by most radio stations when it was released as a single in 1993. Nonetheless, other profanity on the compilation remains unedited (the word "bitch" remains on "You Could Be Mine", and "fuck" remains on "Since I Don't Have You"; notably, the latter song's original version did not have said profanity).

Reception and Lawsuit Although the album received mainly positive reviews and sold well, fans criticized the track listing citing lack of some popular songs and too many covers, as reason for complaint. Axl Rose immediately tried to block the release by suing Geffen, saying it would ruin his focus on → Chinese Democracy and if he were to get the album finished and released sooner, The Greatest Hits album would be selling more, leaving the album unnoticed. Former bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan helped Rose file the lawsuit against Geffen, although they did not speak to each other in person. This failed and the album was released under Geffen Record's rights.

Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide is a four-song EP released by the American hard rock band → Guns N' Roses on December 16, 1986 on the label, UZI Suicide. (This was ostensibly a self-released record but UZI Suicide was actually part of Geffen Records).[2] When referred to by the band talking about the EP, they have simply called it Live Like a Suicide. The record itself was reportedly limited to only 10,000 copies, and it came out only in vinyl and cassette formats. All four tracks were not actually performed live in front of an audience, rather they were demos that had crowd sounds added in later. One song considered for this EP was Shadow of Your Love, which for some reason never made it onto the album. In 1988, the recordings featured on 'Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide' were re-released along with four newer songs as the album → G N' R Lies.


Artwork The front cover consists of a photograph of two of the band , Duff McKagan and Axl Rose (from left to right), with an early Guns N' Roses logo, designed by Slash, overhead. The artwork from this EP is also featured in the G N' R Lies album artwork.

Song information The four songs were selected from the band's demo tapes: two are cover versions and two are originals. The EP was a faux-live recording with overdubbed crowd noise, but these are in fact studio performances. "Reckless Life" is the opening track on the EP, it opens with Duff McKagen saying "hey fuckers, suck on Guns N' Fuckin' Roses!" This song was originally written by Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin's previous band Hollywood Rose and included in their compilation album The Roots of Guns N' Roses. "Nice Boys" is a cover of a song by Rose Tattoo. The classic rock-inspired "Move to the City" is the third track on the EP. "Mama Kin" is a cover of a song by Aerosmith, who the band have cited as one of their major influences.

Live Like A Suicide (1986)

The second EP by → Guns N' Roses, released after → Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, was released in Japan only. The cover of the EP states Guns N' Roses, hence it is often called as such.[1] It is also known as Live from the Jungle,[2] named so because part of the large red text on the album's obi strip reads "raibu furomu za janguru", meaning "live from the jungle". This is a reference to the song Welcome to the Jungle, even though the song itself doesn't appear on the EP. The record has been released in LP, cassette, and CD format.[3] Tracks one, four and five were recorded live at the Marquee Club in London on June 28, 1987. Track two and three sound like live recordings, but are actually studio recordings with overdubbed crowd noise. Track 6 is the studio version from Appetite for Destruction. The cover features the banned Robert Williams artwork also used (but very briefly) for → Appetite for Destruction.
