Introduction Purpose This document is intended for use with IBM Cognos BI Version 8.4 products. It provides information for using the Architecture Diagram Tool. This tool was developed to show the architecture diagram of Cognos installation components and some settings. This tool is read-only. Cognos settings can not be modified with this tool.
Requirements IBM Cognos BI Version 8.4 Other Cognos BI versions are not compatible with this version of the architecture diagram tool. Microsoft Windows This tool will run on Microsoft Windows operating system only. Java
This tool will run with Java version 1.5 and higher.
Windows Installation 1. the zip file to any directory on your computer. 2. Extract the zip file. 3. A directory is created containing the files: run.jar cog.bat lian_en.txt IBM Cognos Architecture diagram Tool for IBM Cognos 8.pdf 4. Place the extracted directory under
\bin\utilities. 5. Check that the java path is included in the System PATH environment variable.

Run the Architecture Diagram Tool To run this tool, double click the file run.jar or execute the file cog.bat located in the directory
\bin\utilities\cog\IBM Cognos Architecture Diagram Tool_v4.
Navigate to cogstartup.xml
Save Current Settings button Click the Save Current Settings button to create a property file named configuration in the tool installation directory. The next time the tool is run, the cogstartup.xml file path will be pre-populated with the last saved setting.
OK button Click the OK button to continue to the dispatcher page.

Parameters to add or modify: Name: Enter a name to to dispatcher. : Enter a valid . Namespace ID: Enter a valid namespace ID. Dispatcher URL: Enter a Dispatcher URL. This value is found in the Cognos configuration file. Anonymous Checkbox: if anonymous access is enabled in the Cognos configuration file, check this box to run with Anonymous access Click the button to continue. Click the Cancel button to exit the tool.

View your configuration
The time required for a diagram to be displayed will vary depending on the size of the distribution environment. This tool will ping all dispatchers and computers in the network. Allow anywhere from 10 seconds up to 2 minutes for a large distribution.

Diagram The Diagram window is resizable. In the case of a very large distribution, the Diagram may have overlapping components. To make the Diagram easier to read, it is recommended to maximize the window or resize the window to a larger size.

File: o New : Enables the to choose and navigate to a new cogstartup.xml Connection: the connection between the components of each computer is viewed by a line from the starting component and ending with a circle to the ending component. o Refresh: You can refresh the diagram to monitor the network connection at any time and notice the changes. o Gateway – dispatcher connection : toggle to show or hide this connection o Dispatcher – content manager connection : toggle to show or hide this connection o Content manager – content store connection: toggle to show or hide this connection o Content manager – authentication provider connection: toggle to show or hide this connection Run Tools : The following available diagnostic tools that can be run : o IBM Cognos 8 Dispatcher utility : from http:// www-01.ibm.com//docview.wss?rs=0&uid=swg24021220 o IBM Cognos 8 Content Manager size tool : installed with the product and is located at

Legend
Click on components of a computer Each computer is illustrated by a gray box. Each component is illustrated by a white box inside the gray box. If you click on each white box you can view more information about that specific component. In the example below, you can see that computer tp-joharii includes an NTLM authentication provider. Click the AP box to display a popup box with information about that specific authentication provider. In the example shown below, the namespace ID is ntlm and the type of the authentication provider is NTLM. The example also shows that the selected computer cant be accessed by the computer running the IBM Cognos Architecture Diagram Tool. If the name of the workstation is printed in red-e.g. sottendtdc2 - it could be an indication of high network traffic and therefore a time out of the ping that was sent to the target computer; or it could indicate insufficient privileges because the computer is inaccessible.

Add Note Right click on the main diagram and select Add Note. A text box is displayed at that location. Add comments about specific computers or any errors you have encountered.
