June 17, 1882Birth of Stravinsky in Orianenbaum, Russia. Studies piano and theory formally during early childhood and teen years. Met and studied composition and orchestration privately with Nicolai RimskyKorsakov. Encouraged a Russian nationalistic style of writing

May 29th, 1913 Performance of The Rite of Spring at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. There was an infamous riot that broke out that night, due to Stravinsky’s shocking music and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky’s unconventional dances. Critics had negative to mixed views.

June 25th, 1910 – June 15th, 1911 - Early Commissions: Firebird, Petrushka (During which Rite was being formed) premiered and made Stravinsky and overnight success. Both were written in similar style to Korsakov

1909Foundation of Ballet Russes by Serge Diaghliev in Paris. A ballet company initially focused on Russian culture by using Russian concepts, composers, choreographers and dance styles. Diaghilev who commissioned Stravinsky to compose for Ballet Russes

July 1911 – travelled to country estate of Princess Tenichev near Smolensk, met with Nicolas Roerich to further plan Rite. Came up with plan of action and dance titles, Reorich modeled costumes and backdrops after Princess’ collection of early Ethnic Russian Art

1938Stravinsky solicited by Disney to use music in Fantasia

1921 – Diaghilev full revival of Rite, opening to positive reviews

September 30, 1987 – Mounted Recreation of Rite of Spring by Joffrey Ballet in San Francisco. The remounted choreography was “80% Nijinsky, 20% Hodson”, though, it was hard to tell the difference between the two. Critically praised.

April 6, 1971 Death of Stravinsky in New York, NY

1965 – Founding of Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, IL by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. Ballet Company specializing in cutting edge works and recreations of 20th century ballets

1972-1987 – Beginning of recreation of Opera by Millicent Hodson (choreographer and Dance historian) and husband Kenneth Archer (art historian). Compiled prompt books, sketches, paintings, photographs, reviews and annotated scores. Interviewed Dame Marie Rambert, Nijinsky’s assistant. In 1987 Joffrey gained NEA grant to mount reconstruction
