Section 1 – Instructions & Operations Manual 1.1

How to Use This Manual This manual is written for the purpose of explaining proper installation and operation of the Varco Best Stepping Actuator. This manual contains the part numbers of the replacement parts and procedures.

1.2.

Product Description The Varco Best Stepping Actuator is designed to be used in an application that requires positive and reliable rotational positioning. The Actuator can be ordered for applications requiring from five complete revolutions to 32 complete revolutions. The Actuator is available in a pneumatic or hydraulic version and can be supplied with electrical solenoids for your application. The Actuator can be operated manually without the need for special tools. The Actuator is equipped with a 1.5" hex drive shaft for manual actuation. The Actuator can be adjusted at any time that the valve is not being actuated under power. The Actuator will remain in the last position selected, whether the last position selected was manual or under power. The Actuator is equipped with a visual indicator located on the side of the case. The indicator is field adjustable for your application. The Actuator can be ordered with an electrical position sensor. The sensor can be wired to prevent the Actuator from over traveling on the opening and closing strokes and provides the a 4-20mA signal to monitor the current position of the Actuator. The Actuator is activated by pneumatic or hydraulic fluid. The fluid acts upon a piston that extends a pawl to rotate the drive pins and spool 36 degrees. Two pawls are used, one for clockwise rotation and one for counterclockwise rotation. An integrated detent ball is used to maintain the Actuator in the last selected position.

The spool is centered with two needle bearings ing two replaceable races. On the lower end of the spool, there is a large pinion gear which drives the spur gear on the speed reducer. The speed reducer is used to operate the visual indicator and the position sensor. The Actuator cylinders are operated by two three-way pneumatic valves or a single four-way, three-position hydraulic valve. The valves' solenoids can be provided with either U.L. listing or Cenelec approved. The available solenoids' voltages are 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 110 VDC or 220 VDC. The valve is activated for approximately five seconds for each "step" (36 degrees of rotation). The Actuator output torque is dependent on the supply input pressure. For max torque output, the fluid pressure required to operate the valve is 250 psi max for the pneumatic version or 2500 psi for the hydraulic version. The Actuator can be fitted with a variety of adapter configurations for your particular application. 1.3

Control Philosophy The Actuator is designed to be controlled with an external control system, such as a PLC (Programmable Logic controller). This gives the major advantage of having the ability to integrate the addition of the NOV/Best Actuator into an existing control system. The requirements for controlling the NOV/Best Actuator are as follows: 1.

Actuation of the close solenoid will step the Actuator closed. Actuation of the open solenoid will step the Actuator open.

Each step of rotation (36 degrees) requires a three second pulse to the electric solenoid valve. The pulse should be off for three seconds (this gives the Actuator time to reset the Actuator cylinder/pawl for the next step).

An Actuator with the position sensor installed provides a convenient means of monitoring the position of the choke stem. The position sensor outputs a continuous 4-20mA signal. An output of 4mA indicates a closed position, and an output of 20mA indicates an open position.

The position sensor is supplied with two cam operated limit switches. The cams are field adjustable for the particular application. Connecting these limit switches in series with the solenoid valves will provide an adjustable travel distance for the opening and closing position of

the choke. An alternate use of the limit switches is to provide a field adjustable switch for monitoring a specific travel position of the Actuator. 1.4

All internal pressure is to be vented from the choke. the number of revolutions required to operate the choke on which the Actuator is to be installed on. The number of revolutions can be verified by closing the choke completely and counting the number of complete revolutions required to fully open the choke. Compare the number of revolutions required to operate the choke to the Actuator. The choke revolutions and the Actuator revolutions should match. Field wiring is to be completed in accordance to standard electrical practices. The Actuator is shipped with the visual indicator and the potentiometer in the open position. 1. the choke is in the closed position. 2. the Actuator visual indicator is in the closed position. 3. Install the mounting flange onto the top of the bonnet.

The angular location of the bolt holes in the adapter plate will allow for an orientation of 15 degree increments for the orientation of the Actuator. Torque bolts to 90 ft-lbs (122 Nm).

Install the Actuator onto the adapter spine. Install bolts and torque the bolts to 90 ft-lbs (122 Nm). Connect the wiring to the electric solenoid valves if so equipped. Connect the supply fluid to the Actuator valve(s). Check for leaks.

Function Testing and Adjustments Basic Note: Open the choke using the manual (1.5" hex located on top of the Actuator. Turning the hex clockwise will open the choke. Turning the hex counterclockwise will close the choke. During the operation of the manual override, the Actuator will "detent" every 36 degrees (10 times per revolution). The detent should feel positive and maintain the position of the choke when the wrench is removed. 1. The NOV/Best Actuator is function checked before shipping. After installation of the Actuator on the choke, the Actuator should be function tested to proper operation. 2. The choke is to be in the closed position. 3. Stroke the choke fully open and then fully closed five times. that during the manual actuation of the choke that the operation is smooth and consistent. Visual Indicator 1. When the choke is at the limits of the travel in both the open and closed position, that the visual indicator is properly adjusted. If the visual is not properly orientated at the open and closed position, follow the following procedure to adjust the visual indicator: A. B. C.

Remove the six bolts retaining the visual indicator cover. With the choke fully closed, adjust the closed dial to be vertical. With the choke fully open, adjust the open dial to be vertical.

Note:

When adjusting the open dial, the closed dial can be held in its current position by using a small pick or other device (small screwdriver) held in the indention on the outside diameter of the close dial.

Operate the choke to the limits of travel several times to the settings.

E.

Reinstall the cover plate, making sure the o-ring gasket is properly seated in the groove of the retainer. Torque the bolts to 20 ft-lbs (27 Nm).

Position Sensor Assembly 1. The position sensor is to be wired per the applicable installation wiring diagram. The remote indicator is to be connected and visible; the power supply is to be wired and operational. 2. Position the choke to the closed position. The remote indicator should read 4mA. If the remote indicator is not 4mA, then note the reading. 3. While manually opening the choke, that the remote indicator is continuously increasing. When the position of the choke is in the open position, the remote indicator should read 20mA. If the remote indicator is not reading 20mA, then note the reading. 4. If the readings between the close position and the open position was increasing and continuous, then all is required is to zero and span the transmitter located in the position sensor. If the readings were increasing and then blank and then increasing again at a smaller scale, then the Actuator will need to be removed, operated until the visual indicator is at zero, close the choke and reinstall the Actuator. Adjusting the Transmitter 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. October, 2006

Close the choke. With the choke in the closed position, adjust the transmitter "zero" screw until the remote indicator is indicating 4mA. Open the choke. With the choke in the open position, adjust the transmitter "span" screw until the remote indicator is indicating 20mA. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until the remote indicator is indicating 4-20mA.

Operation Note: A. This procedure is common for all NOV/Best Actuators; however, if the electric solenoid valves were not supplied by NOV/Best, your specific operation procedure may differ. B. The Actuator will rotate 36 degrees each time either actuation cylinder is pressurized. The actuation time is dependent on the pressure and torque required to operate the choke. C. A suggested cycle timing is "on" three seconds, "off" three seconds. 1. the supply fluid is clean, plentiful and connected. Supply fluid quality differs for each installation. The life of your Actuator is dependent on the quality of your supply. Adequate measures should be taken to supply the Actuator with a quality supply fluid. 2. Energize the solenoid for five seconds. This will pressurize the actuation cylinder piston and rotate the Actuator spool 36 degrees (1 step). 3. De-energize the solenoid for a minimum of six seconds. This will provide ample time for the actuation cylinder piston to retract and reset the pawl for the next cycle. 4. Repeat for the opposite actuation cylinder. 1.8

Pneumatic Actuator Assembly Instructions (Refer to Shaffer Assembly Drawing in Section 3) NOTE:

Install all components using Never-Seez as the lubricant.

Housing Assembly 1. The housing, item 1, should be inspected to that it is clean and free of rust. 2. Install o-ring, item 7, into the o-ring groove in the lower I.D. of the housing. 3. Install the thrust washer, item 4, into lower groove. installed toward the bearing.

4. Press the bearing, item 5, into place. the bearing is properly seated; the top of the bearing should be flush with the top of the bearing boss within .03 inches. 5. Press the visual indicator shaft bushing, item 50, flush with the outside of the housing. 6. Press the sensor shaft flanged bushing, item 79, flush with the inside of the housing. Cover Assembly 1. The cover, item 9, should be inspected to that it is clean and free of rust. 2. Install o-ring, item 7, into the o-ring groove in the I.D. of the cover. 3. Install the thrust washer, item 4, into groove. The bevel should be installed toward the bearing. 4. Press the bearing, item 5, into place. the bearing is properly seated; the top of the bearing should be flush with the top of the bearing boss within .03 inches. Spool Assembly 1.

The spool, item 2, should be inspected to that it is clean and free of rust.

Press the two bearing races, item 6, onto the spool. There will be no gap between the races and the spool when they are properly installed.

3.

On older models, install ten posts, item 8, into the spool using a thread locking compound on the threads. Torque the posts to 80 ft-lbs (108 Nm). Inspect the installation by ing the posts are seated on the shoulder above the threads and not on the shoulder under the head of the post. (This step is not required on older models).

4.

Install the 81021020 pinion gear, item 3, on the spool by pressing in place or by tapping with a brass hammer. The pinion gear will have a small gap, .015 to .020 inches (.381 to .508 mm) between the pinion and the spool when properly installed.

Install the completed spool assembly into the housing assembly.

Speed Reduction/Gearing and Visual Indicator 1. Install the spur gear, item 69, onto either end shaft of the gear reducer, item 60 thru 66. (NOTE: The spur gear hub is to be away from the gear reducer.) 2. Install the gear reducer, item 60 thru 66, onto the gear reduction bracket, item 70, using four round head screws, item 67, and four lock washers, item 68. A thread locking compound should be used on the screw threads. (NOTE: The bracket is designed to fit only one way on the gear reducer.) 3. Install the open dial (clear), item 52, on the dial shaft, item 43, 44 or 49. Place the o-ring, item 54, on the shaft and follow with the close dial (white). Install the retainer, item 55. The two dials should be stiff to operate when properly assembled. (NOTE: Orientation of the dials is not critical at this assembly level.) 4. Install the seal, item 82, and the o-ring, item 79, onto the sensor connector, item 80. Install the connector in the housing and install the retainer, item 81. The connector should rotate smoothly in the housing when properly assembled. 5. Install the proper sensor shaft, item 51, 77 or 78, into the connector and lightly install the set screw, item 84. Slide the shaft coupler, item 48, over the shaft. Do not tighten the coupling until the unit is adjusted. 6. Install the gear reducer/bracket assembly into the housing at one of three locations, using two socket head cap screws, item 71, and two lock washers, item 72. Do not tighten the cap screw until the unit is adjusted. (NOTE: The gear reducer/bracket assembly is designed for installation in various locations due to the variety in the design of the center-to-center shaft dimensions of the gear reducers.) 7. Adjust the spur gear on the gear reducer to be the same height of the pinion gear on the spool assembly. Tighten the set screw of the spur gear. 8. Install the completed dial assembly into the housing. the dial assembly rotates freely. Slide the coupler, item 48, into place on the shaft. Do not tighten the coupler until the unit is adjusted.

9. Slide both couplers over the shafts of the gear reducer. Adjust the gear reducer/bracket assembly until the shaft of the gear reducer is aligned with the dial and sensor shafts. 10. Set the backlash of the spur gear and the pinion gear by adjusting the location of the gear reducer/bracket assembly. Torque the socket head cap screws to 12 to 14 ft-lbs (16 to 19 Nm). 11. the proper operation of the installation by rotating the spool and observing the smooth operation of the dial and sensor shafts. 12. The indicator cover, item 57, should be inspected to that it is clean and free of rust. 13. Apply a bead of silicon gel in the fillet of the I.D. where the glass will sit. Install the glass, item 58, ing the glass is seated against the cover flange. Apply an additional bead to seal the glass and the retaining ring. 14. Install the retaining ring, item 59. 15. After the silicon has dried, remove the excess silicon from the glass. Detent Assembly 1. Inspect the detent housing, item 38, to the housing is clean and free from rust. 2. Install the o-ring, item 40, over the end of the housing. 3. Install the housing into the main housing and install the clamps, item 46, lock washers, item 34, and cap screws, item 11. Torque the cap screws to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm). (On newer models item 46 has been omitted). 4. Insert the detent ball, item 39, and the spring plunger, item 41, the detent spring, item 41, and the detent housing plug, item 45. Torque the plug to 15 ftlbs (20 Nm). 5. proper installation of the components by manually rotating the spool and observing the detent action of the detent assembly.

Pneumatic Cylinder Assembly 1. Inspect the cylinder housing, item 12, to the housing is clean and free of rust. 2. Press the bronze bushing, item 14, into the smaller end of the cylinder housing. a smooth operation between the piston rod, item 16, and the I.D. of the bushing. If the piston rod does not operate smoothly, then ream the bushing hole with a 1.000" diameter reamer. Manual reaming of the hole is acceptable. 3. Install the o-ring, item 17, on the piston rod. 4. Install the t-ring seal, item 27, on the piston, item 26. 5. Install the o-ring, item 24, and the backup ring, item 25, onto the end cap, item 23. The o-ring should be closest to the edge of the cylinder bore. 6. Slide the piston rod into the piston housing. The holes for the pawl shaft are to be aligned with the tapped holes on the smaller diameter of the cylinder housing. Clamp the "clevised" end of the piston rod in a soft jawed vise, with the end of the housing vertical. (NOTE: Clamp only parallel to the pawl shaft hole, to prevent damage.) 7. Install the cylinder spring, item 15, into the bore. the spring sets squarely in the bore. 8. Install the piston over the piston rod and attach using the jam nut, item 28. Torque the jam nut to 75 ft-lbs (102 Nm). 9. Rotate the part 180 degrees in the vise. Pawl Assembly 1. Install the pawl, item 18, into the rod shaft using the pawl shaft, item 20, being sure to install the pawl spring, item 19, and the spacer, item 22. 2. Install the pawl retainers, item 21, on both ends of the shaft. 3. proper operation of the assembly by observing the smooth and snappy action of the pawl when rotated on the pawl shaft and released.

Completing the Assembly 1. Install the seal o-ring, item 13, on the mounting face of the cylinder housing. Install the cylinder housing into the main housing. The pawl should be pointing to the detent housing. 2. Install the end cap with the installed o-ring and backup ring into the piston end of the cylinder housing. 3. Install and torque the cylinder cap screw, item 35, and the lock washer, item 36, to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm). 4. correct assembly by observing : i. No gap between the mounting face of the cylinder housing and the main housing. If a gap is present, loosen the cylinder cap screws and reinstall. ii. The pawl is centered between the two flanges on the spool assembly. 5. Install an exhaust silencer, item 37, in the cylinder housing. Plug the other tapped hole in the cylinder housing with the plug, item 33. 6. Install the two Allen wrenches, item 73, in the holes on the side of the detent housing mounting boss. 7. Install the two dowel pins, item 47, and the gasket, item 10, in the main housing. 8. Install the cover assembly and torque the cap screws, item 11, and the lock washers, item 34, to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm). 9. Install the V-ring seal, item 73, on the protruding spool shaft. Sensor Installation (See Drawing in Section 3) 1. Install the mounting plate, item 2, on the sensor, item 1, using two countersunk screws, item 3. 2. Mount the drive yoke, item 6, on the sensor with the screw supplied with the sensor. October, 2006

3. Open the sensor housing and rotate the sensor input shaft until the pot resistance is minimal. 4. Rotate the spool in the Actuator until the sensor output shaft is aligned with the drive yoke of the sensor. Install the sensor using two cap screws, item 4, and lock washers, item 5. 5. Set the visual indicator to 90 degrees from the mounting surface of the cover. 6. Install the visual indicator cover assembly with the arrow pointing 90 degrees from the mounting surface of the cover and away from the spool, with six cap screws, item 11, and six lock washers, item 34. 7. proper installation by rotating the Actuator spool open and measuring the output resistance of the potentiometer. Opening the Actuator will increase the resistance of the pot. Closing the Actuator will decrease the output of resistance of the pot.

Installation Notes 1. Be cautious not to allow undue axial (thrust) load on the shaft. 2. Cycle the valve a couple of times prior to final tightening of the mounting kit hardware. This allows the shaft to self-center in the pinion slot, or coupler. 3. Always use sound mechanical practices when torquing down any hardware or making pneumatic connections. 4. This product comes shipped with plastic plugs in the conduit entries in an effort to protect the internal components from debris during shipment and handling. It is the responsibility of the receiving and/or installing personnel to provide appropriate permanent sealing devices to prevent the intrusion of debris, or moisture, when stored outdoors or when installed.

Pneumatic Hookup Procedures Prior to connecting the supply air to the spool valve, flush the system to remove any debris or contaminates. Galvanized pipe can easily flake and contaminate the system and therefore is not recommended. A 40 micron point of use filter at every device is recommended.

Highly Recommended TopWorx highly recommends Locktite 567 brand thread sealant. Do not use a hard setting pipe compound. If Teflon thread seal tape is used, start the wrap on the second thread from the leading thread of the fitting. This will prevent tape shreds from contaminating the spool valve seals. Breathers (AL-M31) should be installed in the exhaust ports to keep debris from falling into the spool valve and damaging the seals. This must be addressed prior to installation, or storage. A flow control may be used in Port 3, but should NEVER BE USED in Port 5. Any blockage or restriction may cause an internal pressure build-up inside the encloser and pose a safety issue.

Switch Calibration Procedure Never perform switch calibration procedure while area is known to be hazardous. For Intrinsically Safe models, unit must be wired in accordance to Control Drawing S-K094/094A. For standard explosion-proof models, calibration may be performed using a Volt-Ohm meter by using the Ohm setting across COM and NO. When switch is active, the meter will read <0.5 Ohms, or the Diode setting may used simply to indicate continuity. If a direct power source is being used, an appropriately sized resistor must be used in series with the s, or permanent damage will occur. Switches are rated 4A @120VAC, and 3A @ 24VDC. Step 1: With valve in the CLOSED position. Push down and slide target magnet #1 until SW1 activates. Release the target magnet to lock the position. Step 2: Rotate valve to the OPEN position. Push down and slide target magnet #3 until SW3 activates. Release the target magnet to lock the position. Step 3: Cycle valve CLOSED and OPEN several times to ensure continued calibration.

For Reverse Acting or Perpendicular Orientation: Step 1: Loosen the 6-32 x .25 set screw on the target disk and lift up on the target disk enough to disengage the locator pin. Step 2: While holding the shaft from turning, rotate the target disk as needed. Push down on the target disk until the locator pin engages. Step 3: Tighten the set screw to 40 in•oz. ( 0.28 N•m ) Note: For other valve configurations the target disk can be moved in 90 degree increments to adapt to the application.

TopWorx warrants that each item of new equipment manufactured by it will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service; its obligation under this Warranty, being limited to making good, at its factory, and part of parts thereof, which shall be returned to it with transportation charges prepaid, within one year after the date of the purchase of such equipment by the original purchaser, and which its examination shall disclose to its satisfaction to have been thus defective. TopWorx however, assumes no risk or liability for results of the use of the products purchased from it. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, WHETHER OF MERCHANTABILITY FITNESS, OR OTHERWISE EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AND ALL OTHER OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITIES AND TOPWORX NEITHER ASSUMES , NOR AUTHORIZES ANY PERSON TO ASSUME FOR IT ANY OTHER LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE SALE OF THIS EQUIPMENT. No claims for labor in replacing defective parts and equipment and consequential damages will be allowed by the Company. This Warranty shall not apply to equipment which has been subjected to misuse, negligence or accident. This Warranty shall not apply to any equipment which shall have been repaired
