INTRODUCTION Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known type of silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fiber, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different colors. Silks are produced by several other insects, but generally only the silk of moth caterpillars has been used for textile manufacturing. There has been some research into other silks, which differ at the molecular level. Many silks are mainly produced by the larvae of insects undergoing complete metamorphosis, but some adult insects such as web spinners produce silk, and some insects such as raspy crickets produce silk throughout their lives. Silk production also occurs in Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, and ants), silverfish, mayflies, thrips, leafhoppers, beetles, lacewings, fleas, flies and midges. Other types of arthropod produce silk, most notably various arachnids such as spiders. India is also the largest consumer of silk in the world. The tradition of wearing silk sarees in marriages by the brides is followed in southern parts of India. Silk is worn by people as a symbol of royalty while attending functions and during festivals. Historically silk was used by the upper classes, while cotton was used by the poorer classes. Today silk is mainly produced in Bhoodhan

The silk from Pochampally is particularly well known for its classic designs and enduring quality. The silk is traditionally hand-woven and hand-dyed and usually also has silver threads woven into the cloth. Most of this silk is used to make sarees. The sarees usually are very expensive and vibrant in color. Garments made from silk form an integral part of Indian weddings and other celebrations. In the northeastern state of Assam, three different types of silk are produced, collectively called Assam silk: Muga, Eri and Pat silk. Muga, the golden silk, and Eri are produced by silkworms that are native only to Assam. The heritage of silk rearing and weaving is very old and continues today especially with the production of Muga and Pat riha and mekhela chador, the three-piece silk sarees woven with traditional motifs. Mysore Silk Sarees, which are known for their soft texture, last many years if carefully maintained. Asia is the main producer of silk in the world and produces over 95 per cent of the total global output. Though there are over 40 countries on the world map of silk, bulk of it is produced in China and India. India is the second largest producer of silk with 18475 MT (2006-07) and also the largest consumer of silk in the world. It has a strong tradition and culture bound domestic market of silk. In India, mulberry silk is produced mainly in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir and West Bengal, while the nonmulberry silks are produced in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and northeastern states. About sixty loch persons are engaged in various sericulture activities in the country. It is estimated that sericulture can generate employment of 11 man days per kg of raw silk production (in on-farm and off-farm activities) throughout the year. Organizational study sericulture is used as a tool for rural reconstruction. Sericulture also provides vibrancy to village economies where about 57 per cent of the gross value of silk fabrics flows back to the cocoon growers thus; large chunk income goes back to the villages from the cities.

The Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) has been awarded the Certificate of Geographical Indication for Mysore Silk, elevating it to a brand name for its exclusive use. Henceforth, all Mysore Silk sarees sold by the KSIC will come with the logo IPI, meaning Intellectual Property India. KSIC is also the first state government enterprise to get a logo from the Geographical Indication Registry (GIR), a Central government body based in Chennai. GIR was formed to protect the Intellectual Property Rights for Indian goods under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.The GIR certificate is a sign used on goods that have a special geographical origin and possess qualities or reputation of their place of Origen. The KSIC also will have the patent rights of Mysore Silk brand and no other organization can use the same name for other silk products. The other products which have been awarded GIR certificates include Kanjeevaram Sarees, Basmati Rice, Swiss Watches and Dutch Tulips. EXCLUSIVE STATUS Manufacturers or traders can use the words „Mysore Silk‟ to market their silk fabric without KSIC‟s nod product must be made in Mysore district penal action for unauthorized use. Every Mysore silk Saree will carry a logo – intellectual property India (IPI). AR‟s of Korean manufacturing sector are textile industries (KSIC code 32) and machinery, equipment and electronics industries (KSIC code 38). The output share of textile has decreased from 21.8% in 1970 to 13.7% in 1990 while that of machinery and equipment has increased from 12.2 per ce34.1%

BRIEF HISTORY Karnataka Silk Industries Limited (KSIC) was established in the year 1980 with its corporate office at 3rd& 4th Floor, Public Utility Building, and M.G.Road Bangalore. The main business of KSIC is production and sale of world renowned “Mysore Silks”. The Silk Weaving Factory (SWF) is situated at Mysore on the Mysore-Mananthodi Road, about 2.5 Kim‟s. Away from City Railway Station. This Silk Filature is situated at T.Narasipura about 30 kms from Mysore City. The major raw material for manufacturing the fabric is produced at the T.Narasipura Filature Unit. Part of the requirement is met from outside sources. The products are marketed through a network of company owned retail outlets/showrooms, exhibition-cum-sales ant institutional sales. The

The unit was started with 10 looms and gradually increased to 44 Looms over a period. The looms and preparatory machines were imported from Switzerland and was the first of its kind in India. After India gained Independence the Mysore state sericulture Department took control of the Silk Weaving Factory. In 1980 the Silk Weaving Factory was handed over to Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation Limited, a Govt. of Karnataka Enterprise and is popularly known as KSIC.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The silk weaving factory in Mysore, presently owned by KSIC, was established in the year 1912 by the Maharaja of Mysore province. The unit was started with 10 looms and gradually increased to 44 looms over a period. The looms and preparatory machines were imported from Switzerland and was the first of its kind in India. After India gained Independence the Mysore state Sericulture Dept. took control of the silk weaving factory. KSIC Ltd was established on 18th April 1980 with assistance by Government and World Bank scheme under integrated Karnataka sericulture project. KSIC is the only organization in the Country commanding the entire gamut of silk production right from the reeling of cocoons to the weaving of pure silk fabrics, under one roof. Problem based on HRM department:Everyone has motivational energy. Although many problem employees display a marked lack of drive and commitment in their jobs, these qualities are usually alive and well in other areas of their lives. 1. Application of 7 S Models The 7 S Model is better known as McKinsey 7-S. the two people who developed this model are, Tom Peters and Waterman, have been consultants at McKinsey & co that time. They published their 7 S Model in their article “Structure is not organization” (1981) and “In Search of Excellence” (1982). Perhaps the most important element, which trigged the interest of American managers in the issue of culture, was the emergence of Japanese competition. As Japan began to take a leading role in one basic industry after another, the question of cultural difference emerged as a casual factor to explain Japanese superiority.
