Margaret Moran CEA – A4 4/12/12 Keystone Library Overview The Keystone Library, located in Keystone, Indiana, was gutted recently and needs to be remodeled. Plans have been drawn up to construct the appearance and inside flow of the building. The designs pay special attention to Universal Design principles, and a green roof is included in the building’s design. There is an elevator and all aisles are at least 5ft. According to International Building Code (IBC), this building is a type II construction building, meaning it must be constructed of non-combustible materials such as concrete and steel. It must be very fire-proof, but not as fire-proof as a type I construction building. Its occupancy is B because it is a service-type building (not an assembly because there aren’t thousands of people there at once). There were many criteria for this project. First of all, it had to keep its footprint of XX by XX. It had to have a partial second story with open area for bookshelves. The first floor had to have a book area, a semicircular help desk, a children’s section and help desk, a Noblesville history room, computers, public restrooms, a staff workroom, staff restrooms, a head librarian’s office, meeting rooms, and a mechanical room. The second floor needed public restrooms and an open area for bookshelves. A green roof was also required. The designer chose to place the help desk right inside the front doors so that it could be found and accessed easily as a central location. The staff restrooms are attached to the staff workroom so that they are only accessible to staff. In case library patrons wish to speak with the head librarian, the office is located beside the stairs, behind the help desk, and in front of the main library. The green roof was built by changing a floor structure to a layer of dirt and grass. Only small bushes were used due to the fact that there was not much space for roots. There is a concrete pathway that goes through the green roof with two picnic areas. This building is a neo-eclectic style of architecture, mainly because of all of the different materials that are used. The building is brick, stone, and marble, with steel accents. However, the simplicity of the design suggests small modern influence. Modified ranch style can also be seen in the symmetry and brick of the first story of the structure. However, the building is mostly neoeclectic. This style was chosen because it best matched the layout of the building. In addition, the budget was tight, so a less expensive style was chosen.
