Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu Kamae KAMAE Jodan no kamae 上段の構 Overpowering the opponent from above. From hira ichimonji no kamae, step straight back with the right foot lifting the bo over head. When stepping back, turn the foot back at a forty five degree angle, making certain that the knee tracks correctly over the foot. The right arm is extended directly over head, while the left is directing the tip of the weapon at the opponent’s eyes. Chudan no kamae 中段の構 Piercing your opponent’s heart. From seigan no kamae, bring the right end of the weapon under your armpit by rolling the right hand and resting the back of the hand on your chest. Keep the left elbow pinned to your side while holding the weapon softly with the left hand. Bosaki is directed at the opponent’s heart. The stance should be low and powerful. Gedan no kamae 下段の構 Keeping a composed mind and reacting appropriately to your opponent’s changes. From seigan no kamae, let the weapon rest behind you with the left hand at the crook of the hip. Do not have any part of the end of the weapon exposed and completely hide the weapon from you opponent. Ichimonji no kamae 一文字の構 Have a feeling of dissolving into oneness with nature. Face the opponent sideways, looking over the left shoulder. The weapon is held in both hands, palms down at shoulder width. The left tip of the weapon and the left foot are directed at the opponent.
Hira ichimonji no kamae 平一文字の構 Protecting someone important behind you. Standing in a shizen tai posture, secure the bo in both hands with the palm facing downward. There will be a slight bend in the knees and the weapon will not be against the body, rather it will be held one fist width from the body. Hokosaki (Ihen) no kamae 鉾先(イ変) の構 Changing to deceive your opponent From hidari seigan no kamae pull the left elbow to the outside of the left hip and extend the right arm straight out in front at the same height as the eyes. The weapon should cross your body in a diagonal manner. Allow the weapon to float and softly move while in this kamae. Seigan no kamae 青眼の構 Controlling your opponent at your will Step the right foot back with the right hand at the crook of the right hip. Both heels are on the same line and the rear foot is pointed back at a forty five degree angle. The left hand is securing the weapon softly over-hand with the elbow close to the body. The bosaki is splitting the opponent’s eyes. Tenchijin no kamae 天地人の構 Striking and knocking your opponent down with one strike Step the right foot back slightly and turned away at a ninety degree angle from the opposite. There will be a slight bend in the knees. Point the weapon to the sky holding it with the right hand so that it is being gripped only by the palm, do not allow the thumb to wrap around the weapon. Keeping it perpendicular with the ground, it will rest along the right forearm and the left hand will secure it with a very loose grip below the right elbow. The right hand will be at the ear height.
Kyohen no kamae キョウ 変の構 Tempting or inviting your opponent to strike This is the same as gedan no kamae with the weapon pointing to the side, behind you. One does not strike first from this kamae.
