Medical school requires a huge commitment in time and energy. How have you prepared for this commitment? (350 words/2000 characters) “Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal- a commitment to excellence- that will enable you to attain the success you seek”, said by Italian-American racing driver Mario Andretti. Pursuing medicine is my ultimate goal, and along with being committed, I have been determined to pursue this goal. My curiosity in the field of medicine is what drove me to greater heights and constantly learn new innovations and methods in medicine. During my undergraduate and graduate years at Texas A&M University, I was part of a research team at the Michael E. Debakey Institute that looked at various parameters involved in heart failure and how acceptable blood volume ranges could be a key treatment option for such patients. Being part of this team for three years required tremendous amount of commitment, time, energy, and the desire to pursue the end goal. Working in a research setting requires one to have patience as results don’t happen overnight, therefore achieving accurate and precise results took enormous amounts of time. There were times where I had to stay up late nights in order to complete the tasks on hand. During my last semester of graduate studies, I was a team leader for another project at my lab, where I was mentoring three undergraduates while also completing my graduate coursework. Juggling through challenging coursework during both my undergraduate and graduate years was never an easy task, however my commitment to research never diminished and ensured its completion. My faculty mentors also saw the desire and commitment I had to attain my end goal of publishing my research, which was a testament to my unrelenting pursuit. I believe such traits are essential in a medical school candidate, as the desire to continue is what drives us forward. I believe experiences such as my research activity has prepared me for the rigors of medical school as I have been relentless in my pursuit of becoming a physician.
