Dinamalar (Tamil: தினமல ) is a daily newspaper published from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Pondicherry, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Trichy, Erode, Vellore and Salem from Tamil Nadu state, India. Dinamalar was founded by T. V. Ramasubbaiyer.[1] T. V. Ramasubbaiyer (1908–1984) started the news paper in Trivandrum in year 1951 to voice for the cause of merging of Tamil speaking southern region of India around Kanyakumari district with Madras presidency. The company has an approximately 1500 employees across its 10 centers and an approximate turnover of over 100 Crore Rupees.

History In 1956, T. V. Ramasubbaiyer moved his operations to Tirunelveli. He opened editorial units in Tiruchirapalli in 1966 and Madras in 1979.[2] Dinamalar is run as a partnership firm by the sons of T. V. Ramasubbaiyer. R. Venkitapathy, R.Krishnamoorthy, R.Lakhmipathy, R.Raghavan, and Mr.R.Sathyamoorthy. are the Partners of Dinamalar.

Siruvarmalar Dinamalar carries Siruvarmalar,[4] a supplement aimed towards children, every Friday. Siruvarmalar features scientific facts and stories depicted by pictorials. It is targeted at the children with a lot of pictorials and sketches. It also has short stories and games that earn random winners a lot of prizes. Starting Feb.4, 2011, Siruvarmalar was relaunched as a black & white comics magazine containing serialized stories.

Varamalar Varamalar[5] is bundled with Dinamalar on Sundays. Varamalar covers the popular trends in the society and also features short stories. It is basically a weekly round up of news and entertainment in Tamil. Also on Sundays the main daily is split into two sections, each of them resembling a regular daily by featuring unique front pages and complete articles.

Computer Malar This is a supplementary issue of Dinamalar that provides information on technologies in Tamil. This is the only Tamil weekly dedicated to Technology news.[6]

Fountain Ink This is a monthly digest in English published by a subsidiary of Dina Malar. The paper quality is very good with vivid photographs and articles targeting the student community. The journalistic style is narrative.

Controversy South Indian Film Artistes' Association vs. Dinamalar In October 2009, Dinamalar had published an article claiming that several Tamil film actresses were involved in prostitution. Pictures and names were also published in the paper. The South Indian Film Artistes' Association immediately petitioned to have the editor, Lenin, arrested. The SIFAA also staged a rally, condemning Dinamalar. The editor of the newspaper, Mr. Lenin was arrested.[7] He was released on the next day due to a petition from Chennai Press Club, Madras Union of Journalists, Press Trust of India and The Indian Newspaper Society which stated that his arrest was completely unwarranted and was done to please popular film stars. Dinamalar also stated that they only delivered news obtained from ethical journalism and there was no secondary agenda.[8]

Anti muslim stance-Publishing cartoons for Prophet Muhammad On 8 September 2008, Dinamalar's supplementary edition Computer malar carried the cartoon of Prophet Muhammad.[9] This was considered as an attempt to appease the Hindutva forces and to provoke the sentiments of Muslims who consider love towards Prophet Muhammad is above their life.
