Mechanical Hazards With the difficulties faced by contractors in obtaining workers, more and more machines are being used in worksites. Mechanical hazards in worksites come from the use of the various mechanical equipment. 2

Mechanical Hazards It should be noted that mechanical action or motion of machinery is primarily hazardous. Workers could be struck by the moving part, or their body part could be trapped between these parts.

Struck by moving parts of machines Machines such as excavators, dumpers, tipper trucks etc have massive moving parts which could cause serious injuries or even death should it strike anyone.

Struck by moving parts of machines A safety zone should be created around this machine and any unauthorized workers should be prevented from coming near this machine. 5

Struck by moving parts of machines Machines should be operated only by authorized operators. Precautions should be taken to prevent unauthorized persons from using the machine such as by removal of the keys to start the equipment. 6

Trapped between moving parts of machinery Moving parts of machines may cause parts of the body to be trapped between them. For example, in gears, couplings and beltings, there is always a hazard of workers having their fingers trapped at the nip point of these components and thereby losing their fingers. 8

IN-RUNNING NIP POINT

Two machine parts either both or one part move, the meeting point is the nip point.

Limbs can be caught in the nip points and caused crushed or amputation injuries.

Trapped between moving parts of machinery Moving parts of machines should be provided with proper guarding. The purpose of the guarding is to ensure that the possibility of between the and the moving part is eliminated.

Trapped between moving parts of machinery The guarding provided must be effective. It should be of good construction, sufficient strength and good material. It must also be properly maintained. Guarding should always be in place except when the machine is undergoing repair or maintenance. 12

Cutting Hazard Worksite utilizes various kinds of cutting devices such as circular saws, grinders, drills etc. These devices could pose a hazard should the cutting edge come into with a worker.

Cutting Hazard Only trained workers are allowed to use the cutting machine. The workers should also exercise due care when using the cutting machines.
