Osiris Centeno Ms. Petty English 101 14 December 2014 Child Abuse There have always been concerns involving developing countries, but right now the one that is most being looked at is child labor. The fact that we ignore it is concerning children, a controversial issue, and moving on with our lives is common. Child labor is a topic that is mostly hit by the economist over the fact that it is exploitation of children who would not be allowed to legally work if they were in the United States. The child being shown in the photograph is from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is being exhibited as a hard worker like it says in the plaque in front of the clear box that keeps him in. He is being displayed as if he was an object and not a human being. Child abuse is shown within this ment to promote the ending to such a cruel act toward young children. The author uses pathos and logos rhetoric appeals in this ment, but the one that is most shown is pathos. Child labor should be banished for it is taking away their infancy and their time to get an education. Child labor is known to just be children working for large facilities with little or even no pay. Children can work for these industries in many ways, or they even use them without consent for human trafficking, prostitution and child soldiering. It is said it is a way to pay off their debt to the industry leaders if they have any or even are taken by force. Some families even send their children to work because of the little pay they get (Hindman). It is easier for parents to send their children to work other than school for their pay is less than minimum wage, and they are in need of much more. Education is what the children need in order to grow and succeed out of poverty and it is what the businesses don’t want. They take advantage of these families because there is no way to stand up for them, no one to stop the unfairness and cruelty.

There is no law or consequences to stop them from treating the children like slaves with little pay. The ment was made with the intention to show pathos and logos rhetoric’s in order for the audience to take in that this is occurring around the world. It can be pathos because it has a lot of emotion surrounding the subject. Many people would hate to see it be their children working very hard to bring food to the table. They would feel anger against the people with power for the reason that it is defenseless children we are talking about here. The ment shows kids that is not very clean, is working on who knows what, and is also trapped within a box. The box has no escape, it is clear but there is no way to get out of that tight space. The feeling of feeling clustered is the worst, of being trapped in such a small space can be suffocating. These children might feel suffocated for the reason that they have nowhere to run, nowhere to get away. In the background it is filthy, this shows that it is not a safe environment when most of the time what we want is to know that our kids are safe. The clothes put on his back shows that they are poor by the way it is really faded and ripped. It is also logos because logically we know this is happening we just choose to shove it to the side and let others deal with it. We know that a child shouldn’t have to be working at such a young age and for the rest of their lives. Our mind set is that children should have their infancy and attend school so they can grow knowledge. Logically the businesses know that knowledge is power and they will prevent them from going to school in order for them to keep them there. The author intended the audience to be businesses, governments, parents, and other children. I believe the audience is mainly the government, they want to show them that it needs to be stopped, and that they need to do something against the cruel actions that are being used against them. The children and parents are included in this audience because they want to show that it is good to be thankful for what they have. For business it is also a wakeup call, many third world businesses begin in countries with laws against this and might not know what

is going on. Intentionally you can say it goes out to everyone, so we can stop ignoring the fact that this is happening, and show us that it is a huge problem. The foundation behind the photograph had a purpose for this and it is for people to help out the kids that need it the most. The photograph was put out there for us to help stop child labor once and for all. The future of these children and our next generation depend on what we are going to do to help them get an education, and that is what the foundation is trying to come across to us by making this ad. The child is shown for us to have a heart, to make us rethink about what is important in life. It is there to prove that there are others in much more need than us. We complain about not having the next big thing when all they wish for is a meal for the day. The child in the photograph has clothes on his back that we would never want to be seen wearing, but have you ever thought that it is the only thing they might have. The ment is very explanatory itself which is a positive thing because it doesn’t leave people wondering what it is about. It can be understood by everyone for it is simple but yet shows the argument that they want to come across. The child working within a box that looks like it is an exhibition shows that the people with power sees them as objects not people. He is holding two objects in his hands that show that he is still working, for this comes to me as if even if he is in this “box” he needs to continue working for the sake of his family. He is the center point of the photograph because the author wants the reader to bring the attention to him. The child doesn’t look like he’s very clean by the clothes he is wearing and his face is a bit dirty, this may show poorness. All of the mess in the background shows that it is not a clean or safe environment where they are working. The way the child is sitting/kneeling may show that he is tired of working and standing for long hours. The amount of shoe parts stacked up on the side shows me that he doesn’t get a break, so he goes on from one thing to another nonstop. The child is very thin, and this proves that he doesn’t eat much which is also a sign that he is

poor. Over all I feel like it is a photograph of a child that is seen just as a worker and nothing else, and that is why he is being shown in an exhibit to be chosen by the people with power.
