Learner Prior Knowledge/Background Experiences Students have hands on experience with objects in motion in their daily lives. Students have also been observing how forces affect the motion of an object since Kindergarten. During
Kindergarten and First Grade students learned to identify the position of an object, to use positional vocabulary (in front of, behind, etc) to describe the location of an object and to identify what is causing an object to move. In third grade students explored the effects of gravity on the motion of an object. They also identified the different ways in which objects move (side to side, falling, up and down, fast and slow). In fourth grade students described the motion of an object, identified forces as either a push or pull, and made predictions about how a certain force would change the speed and/or direction of an object in motion.

Teaching Strategies (5E’s)
Engage o Students will watch a brief video review of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion (www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVdqxYyFRKY) Following the video students will be asked as a whole class to restate Newton’s Laws of Motion in their own words. The teacher will make anecdotal notes based on observations of student’s responses as a formative assessment.
Explore o Students will to their Edmodo s and follow the link for the Newton’s Laws webquest. The webquest will send students to several different websites to read and gather information. Students will be required to take notes on the different websites in their science notebooks.
Explain o Based on the information in their webquest research students will create and illustrate a comic strip poster that shows a real life example of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion in action. The rubric for the comic strip poster is below.
Elaborate o Students will share their comic strip illustrations with the other students at their collaborative learning tables. Students will provide to one another about their illustrations, and about their written descriptions of how each Law of Motion affects the object in the comic strips.
Evaluate o Students will complete a thumbs up/thumbs down exit ticket at the end of the Newton’s Laws webquest lesson and assignment. On a sticky note students will write a “thumbs up” (one concept they understand and did well on in their comic strip) and a “thumbs down” (one concept they still do not understand and struggled with when creating their comic strip). Students will stick the notes to the door of the classroom on their way out.
Assessment Students will be asked to restate Newton’s Three Laws of Motion in their own words based on their understanding and learning up to this point in the unit. The teacher will record anecdotal notes based on observations of student’s responses to the Explore discussion activity as a formative assessment. The teacher will also observe student’s notes in their science notebooks based on their completion of the webquest research. Observation notes will also be used as a formative assessment of student’s understanding of forces and motion based on their further research. The Newton’s Laws comic strip poster will serve as an assessment of what students know, understand and can apply based on their knowledge of Newton’s Laws and how forces affect an object in motion. Finally, a thumbs up/thumbs down exit ticket will act as another formative assessment of the lesson, and unit, to enable the teacher to alter future instruction as necessary to ensure all students are achieving the learning objectives.
Accommodations/Modifications No IEP or 504 modifications/accommodations will be required for this lesson. The teacher will wear a microphone throughout the lesson which aids students with hearing challenges and attention difficulties to remain focused and attentive while the teacher is giving instructions or guiding class discussion.
Wrap-up/Reflection by Students Students will be given an opportunity to wrap up and reflect on the lesson by responding to a thumbs up/thumbs down exit ticket.
Reflection This was a very successful lesson. The webquest was prewritten and used by other fifth grade science classes. Students were very engaged by the opportunity to work on the class laptops to explore and research Newton’s Laws. They gained much valuable knowledge and were able to access all websites that were assigned without any technology challenges. Some of the students resisted having to illustrate in the form of a comic strip, while several students who are particularly strong artists thrived with the assignment and were more engaged than they usually are during science class. In the future the teacher would have several project options outside of just the comic strip illustration to allow students who have strengths in other areas, such as acting and writing, to be able to self-select a project with the same basic requirements instead of all students being required to draw. The rubric was clear and students appreciated having the expectations laid out clearly and up front for them. Overall students did a great job with this lesson. Some students had to take their illustrations home to complete them due to time constraints in class. In this case students were given the webquest link through the class Edmodo site in order to have access to
their research at home. This presented a challenge for one student without internet access at home so the student was given time after school in the media center to complete the assignment. This is another case where having print resources in addition to the online resources would have given students more access to the required information. Student Work Samples
