Bottoms up
When drill fluids (usually mud) pumped down the hole return to the rig.
Casing
This large metal pipe comes in various sizes. Several lengths are ed together and put into the previously drilled hole.
Change Over
Shift change. Night to days or days to nights.
Galley
Canteen where you get your meals.
Greenhand
Someone who is new to the offshore industry.
Headache ball
Weight before hook, at the end of crane hoist wire. Used to counter the weight of the wire.
Hydrocarbons
Organic chemical compounds made up mainly of Hydrogen and Carbon. A term given to all types of crude oil and gas.
Leave
Your time off the rig. (Opposite of Trip)
Load
Item being lifted by crane,(or other device)
Mud
Consisting of various chemicals, this dark brown drilling fluid is pumped down the drill pipe at high pressure to remove cuttings from drill bit.
Mud Bucket
When coming out of the hole, the drill pipe is full of mud. After loosening a stand of drill pipe, the Mud Bucket is clamped around the pipe before that stand is racked back in the storage bay. The Mud Bucket prevents the mud from the stand spraying around the drill floor.
Off Tour
Time between your shifts. Usually 12 hours.
Oil Rig tight
Answer given when asking how tight to make a bolt. Meaning hit the spanner with a hammer to get it extremely tight.
On Tour
Working shift. Usually 12 hours.
Porosity
Referring to the substance being drilled

Roustabouts' nest
Place where a Roustabout hides when the deck crew are not busy. You know you have found a nest from the empty soft drink cans, confectionary wrappers and improvised seat.
Shaker
Vibrating machine used to separate chippings drilled, from drilling fluids.
Slug
Heavy weight drilling fluid (mud). Used to clean out the hole from a build up of cuttings. Also used when pulling out of the hole.
Smoko
Morning and afternoon breaks.
Smoko Shack
Designated on shift tea break area/room.
Standby Boat
Rescue vessel that is always within 5 miles of the rig.
Tag line
Rope used to control an item being lifted by the crane or tugger.
Tight Hole
Secrecy surrounding information on well being drilled. Preventing competitors from finding out what has been found.
Town
Refers to onshore base.
Trip
Length of your working period on the rig ie 3 weeks.
Tugger
Wire rope winch. Powered by air pressure.
Work Basket
Metal cage holding up to 3 people. Used for working at heights. Hoisted on an tugger or crane.
