GEORGE HARVEY COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE OSSLC-Grade 12, Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course Credit Value: One (1) Credit Prerequisite: Students who have been eligible to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) at least once, and have been unsuccessful at least once, are eligible to take this course to achieve both a Grade 12 credit and their literacy credential for graduation. COURSE DESCRIPTION The OSSLC is an alternative way for students to demonstrate the provincial literacy skills required for graduation. Successful completion of the course demonstrates that students have achieved the reading and writing skills required by the OSSLT. Just as important is the opportunity the course allows students to improve their reading and writing skills as a foundation for building and refining the literacy skills they require in their postsecondary destinations.

COMMUNICATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Student progress and achievement are communicated to the students on an on-going basis through: interim progress reports, student-teacher conferences, verbal/written s, daily practices, formative assessments, and summative evaluations. See student agenda for detailed information on mid-term and final reporting of student achievement of curriculum expectations and learning skills. Learning is the responsibility of the students. If students experience any kind of difficulty with their studies, access to remedial help is available from the teacher by arrangement. The teacher may parents/guardians regarding any concerns about student progress and achievement. A parent/guardian may the teacher regarding any concern or issue about student progress and achievement in person (preferably by appointment), by phone (416) 394-3180. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR EXCEPTIONAL AND ESL/ELD STUDENTS Appropriate accommodations for exceptional and ESL/ELD students are provided by the teacher following recommendations as outlined in each identified student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and/or Annual Education Plan (AEP). In accordance with the Growing Success 2010 document, the following policy will be applied for all assignments: students will be given ample notice of the due dates for summative assignments. Students who do not submit assignments on the due date will be allowed one grace day, but will face a marks deduction of 5%, unless a medical or parent’s note is provided and verified. If no such note is provided, or if the student fails to submit the assignment on the grace day, a mark of zero will be awarded for that assignment.
