Perfume Basic Formulations 1. Fragrance Oils are synthetic  Isolated ingredients are manufactured and put together by perfumers to create a scent  Cheap 2. Essential Oils  These are aromatic oils derived directly from plants or flowers  They have medicinal or healing effects to the human body  Directly affects the mood and emotions of a person 3. Alcohol  A powerful solvent  Evaporates really fast  The largest portion of a perfume consists of alcohol

4. Water  The universal solvent  An additive to soften alcohol scent in a perfume  Also a dilutant 5. Carrier Oils  Another dilutant of perfume oils  Mostly used for perfumery applications  Perfume Making 6. Laboratory Rules  Sanitize  Use clean utensils  Do not contaminate oils and other ingredients  Avoid direct sunlight on all products  Handle all equipment and oils carefully  Wash hands after working

Perfumes for Hair Oils. Hair Oils may be perfumed as desired with perfuming Oils or mixtures of Oils. The following mixtures for general use are recommended: 4233. 1. Rose Oil Perfume, cheap.— Oil of Bergamot 4 ounces, Oil of Citronella 1 ounce, Oil of Cassia or Cinnamon 3 drachms. Oil of Cloves 1/2 drachm. Mix them. Of this, from 3 to 6 drachms or more may be used for each pint of Oil. If finer perfumes are desired without regard to expense, from 1 to 3 ounces of Bulk Perfume of any odor may be used in place of an equal quantity of Alcohol in the Castor Oil Base, or the following combinations of Fatty Perfuming Oils, etc., may be used to mix with any of the other Hair Oil bases. The fatty Oils mentioned in the formulas are made by macerating the fresh flowers in Almond

or Olive Oil. They are imported and may be obtained of New-York jobbing houses. These perfumes can also be used for fine pomades or stick cosmetics. 4234. 2.

Fine Rose Oil Perfume.— Oil or Otto of Rose 2 parts. Oil of Rose Geranium 4 parts, Oil of Patchouli 1 part. Oil of Jasmine, fatty, 10 parts, Oil of Tuberose, fatty, 10 parts, Oil of Violet, fatty, 5 parts. Mix them. This may be used as is necessary to perfume the Oil, from 2

Solid Perfumes Carrier Perfume Soft (consistency of lip balm)  Petroleum jelly Premade lip balm bases Medium (firm at room temperature, softens in your hand)  Coconut butter Mango butter Olive butter Shea butter Premade solid perfume bases Hard (firm until heated)  Cocoa butter - usually has a mild cocoa fragrance Paraffin Beeswax Soy wax - melts at a low temperature If your carrier is soft, you will not need to melt it when you add your fragrance. If it is medium or hard, you will need to heat it gently until it melts. Solid perfumes are also pleasant to use and easy to make. A basic formula would use 80% of your favorite light oil, 13% beeswax and 7% of your fragrance. Melt wax with oil, let cool, add fragrance, blend well and pour into container. Lip balm containers make excellent containers for this. If your results are too hard, add more oil or less beeswax; to soft, add less oil or more beeswax; too strong, add less fragrance.
