Hi all, ed: 15 Apr 2012 Posts: 34

I need a typical section of a grade slab resting on ground (no heavy loading, commercial/residential use). In particular I need detail of junction where grade slab meets plinth beam (top of plinth beam / slab are same). Do we need to keep any gap between two concrete surfaces or not. any detail section will be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Regards, Ashish

Dear Mr. Ashish, The gap between edge of plinth beam, walls and grade slab if provided with gap, which is termed isolation t, will avoid cracking due to shrinkage of grade slab. Typical detail of t is attached herewith. Normally grade slab, plinth beams, columns, trenches walls etc shall be separated by ts may be expansion, isolation, contraction etc. These are movement ts. Since behaviour of grade slab is dependent on loading, modulus of sub grade reaction and material behaviour, the deflections may be so different at the location that differential deformation may set in stresses leading to haphazard cracks.
