A plain-weave cotton-type fabric with weftways ribs and a high warp sett. It is basically a warp rib cloth with fine warp and coarse weft. The cloth is made from cotton, wool or silk or a combination of these. Poplin is a heavy, durable fabric that has a ribbed appearance. It is made with wool, cotton, silk, rayon, or any mixture of these. The ribs run across the fabric from selvage to selvage. They are formed by using coarse filling yarns in a plain weave. Poplin, also called tabinet (or tabbinet), is a strong fabric in a plain weave of any fiber or blend, with crosswise ribs that typically gives a corded surface.[1] Poplin traditionally consisted of a silk warp with a weft of worsted yarn. As the weft is in the form of a stout cord the fabric has a ridged structure, like rep, which gave depth and softness to the lustre of the silky surface. It is now made with wool, cotton, silk, rayon, or any mixture of these, though originally made from silk. The ribs run across the fabric from selvage to selvage. Poplins are used for dress purposes, and for rich upholstery work. They are formed by using coarse filling yarns in a plain weave. Shirts made from this material are easy to iron and do not wrinkle easily. The term poplin originates from papelino, a fabric made at Avignon, in the 15th century, named for the papal (pope's) residence there, and from the French papelaine a fabric, normally made with silk, of the same period.[1] Common usage of poplin until about the 20th century was to make silk, cotton or heavy weight wool dresses, suitable for winter wear. Poplin fabric is made out of cotton, silk, wool or synthetic blends. It is tightly woven plain weave fabric which makes us feel smooth, thin and shiny. Poplin fabric contains 100% cotton and it’s cool, comfortable and breathable to wear and hence it can also be called as cotton poplin. It has heavy weight and highly durable. To serve outdoor purpose, a water-repellent finish will be given to the heavier poplin. It can be used to make large banners for tradeshows, museums etc.

With its rich texture and a non reflective finish, poplin fabrics serve all purposes and it’s considered to be an all purpose fabrics. Flat finished poplin fabrics looks very tight and flat. It is an excellent fabric for draping. It is widely used as a table drapes displays in show rooms and trade shows. It can also be used for sport wear, shirts, boy suits, uniforms and dresses.

Poplin was first manufactured in the papal town of Avington around the 14th century and because of that the word ‘poplin’ came from Italian name papalino. During the Second World War, poplin fabrics had been used on fronts because of its comfort, durability and crisp uniformity. Poplin fabric made of cotton is smooth and soft. Poplin, sometimes called tabinet, is a type of medium- to heavy-weight, durable fabric that is now most frequently made of cotton or a cotton/polyester blend. The name derives from the French papelaine, a fabric normally made with silk, that used in the 1400s. Until about the 20th century, different types of poplin were often used to make dresses suitable for winter wear. It was also a popular upholstery fabric. References to this fabric can be found in many books, most particularly Little Women. Joe and Meg are invited to a ball early in the book and must wear their best dresses made of poplin. Both are conscious that the dresses are not really dressy enough for a dance, and Meg longs instead for a silk dress. The dresses in Little Women were likely made partly of silk, but silk fabrics used for dressier purposes were often distinguished from poplin. The difference lies primarily in the weave, which produces a heavier fabric, and in the fact the silk would have been combined in weavingwith a worsted wool or cotton yarn. Poplin in its early days was made by using a silk warp weave and a worsted yarn weft. The result is a sturdy fabric that has noticeable ridges. Today, poplin is popular in shirts and pants and is often a combination of softer and heavier grades of cotton. Because of its manufacturing process, it tends not to wrinkle easily, and is somewhat water and stain resistant. Both men and women’s pants and shirts can be made of this fabric, and it often feels soft and exhibits a little shine. Although Meg might have mourned not having a silk dress for the ball, men’s shirts made with cotton poplin are often considered the highest quality, and they can be quite expensive. The higher quality the fabric, especially when it is 100% cotton, the greater the price. The expense is usually considered worth it, since the fabric tends to wear well and is easy care. Poplin pants are usually made in the cotton khaki style. Prices can vary, and again, the difference may reflect the quality of materials used. In plain weave, each weft thread (filling) es alternatively over and under each warp yarn in a square pattern.

It is also known as tabby, homespun or taffeta weave.

Manufacture

On the loom, the plain weave requires only two heald shafts.

Each weft yarn goes alternately under and over the warp yarns across the width of the fabric.

Appearance

It has a flat appearance. There are no distinct designs. However these may be produced if yarns have contrasting colours or thicknesses. The various color and weave effects that can be produced will be dealt with in another blog.

Properties

It is easily produced. This is the most made weave in the world. It is relatively inexpensive.

Variations of Plain weave

1. Square plain weaves

In such weaves, warp and weft are present in equal amounts, or in other words, warp cover factor is equal to the weft cover factor. These are used as surgical dressings, dairy cloths, muslin dress fabrics, parachute fabrics, handkerchief fabrics, fabrics for shoes and tents, sheeting fabrics; canvas for transport covers and fabric for use as ribbons in type writers or computers.

2. Warp-faced plain weaves

In these fabrics, warp cover factor is greater than that of weft cover factor. This is normally achieved by having more ends than picks per cm. the warp crimp is also high in these fabrics, while weft crimp is low. Thus very faint lines across the width of the fabrics are produced. A typical fabric in this group is poplin. A typical construction for a polyester/ cotton poplin shirtings is 50x25; 16 tex x 16 tex; 14% x 93% giving a weight of 130g/m2 and a cover factor of 20.0+9.7 = 29.7.

3. Weft-faced plain weaves

This is not a popular group of fabrics as it is normally produced with more than ends per cm, the rate of production in the loom will be greatly reduced. The most popular fabric in this group is the limbric, which is used for dress prints.

ORNAMENTATION OF PLAIN WEAVE

The appearance of a plain fabric can be changed in many ways.

1. The use of colour

In the warp direction, colour stripes are produced along the length of the fabric. In the filling direction, colour stripes are produced across the width of the fabric. When used in both warp and weft directions, a check effect is produced.

2. Changing yarn court

Stripes and check effects can be produced by using different yarn count in one or both directions.

3. Changing the yarn twist

Using combinations of different twist levels and directions in the warp or weft, different effects can be produced is the fabric due to the changes in the orientations of the fibers as shown.

4. Different Finishing treatment

Treatments such as dyeing mercerizing with caustic soda or coating can change the characteristics of plain fabric.

5. Any combination of the above

VOILE AND CREPE FABRICS

These are specialized types of plain weave fabrics. These fabrics are produced using highly twisted two fold yarns. with the doubling twist in the same direction as that of single yarn.

For voile yarn the tex twist factor is generally between 5000 and 7000, while for crepe yarn, it is nearer to 9000.

Voiles are used in lightweight, semi-opaque fabrics for dress saris and light filters.

Crepes are used dress, blouses and bandages. Poplin Broad Cloth

A tightly woven, subtle variation on a plain-weave fabric, characterised by a very high thread count- 100 to 200 tpi- produces a thin, but relatively opaque fabric with a crisp, hard finishing. Also characteristics of the fabric is its fine horizontal ribbing, produced by the lengthwise warp threads being packed more densly than the crossing weft threads. The ribbing is scarcely noticeable but makes any on-grain stripes very clear and appear solid in color, and it also adds a little shine on the fabric. If the cotton fiber itself has any shine, it will enhance the shine of ribbing and produces a very dressy effect. It comes in solid colors, stripes, plaids and checks. 120 *72 Chambray: It looks solid color but is a plain worked with two colors of yarns, usually a white warp and a colored weft or vice-versa.
