Production Designer Profile Hans Bacher Hans Bacher is a legend in the animation world, he has worked on many Disney films such as: Bambi, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Beauty and the Beast, Brother Bear, Lion King, Hercules and so on. Born in , 1953, where he worked as an animation artist and educator. Trained in Graphic Design, doing a MFA-degree at University of Essen, 1974. For the last 40 years he has lived and worked in Dusseldorf, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Manila and Tokyo. In Dusseldorf from 1975-1994 he had his own studio ‘madTParty’ where he did illustration work for European advertising. Animation film producing for German TV. CG-design assignments for Richard Williams Animation London. Special effects/matte painting work for live action films. Co-creator of the comic strip series ‘Alfred J. Kwak’, styling of a 52 episode - ‘Kwak’ TV-series. Currently, since January 2011 Bacher has been a Assoc. Professor at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore teaching Production Design and character development for Animation, illustration and comic-strip-design. He is also an independent film designer and producer. Book author and teacher at universities and studios in the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Austria and China In 2013 his book Dream Worlds: Production Design for Animation was published. Bacher is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. AWARDS:
He has won international awards in 1990 won the German GOLDEN CAMERA AWARD, (equivalent to American Oscar) for the development of the cartoon character Alfred J. Kwak. In addition to winning the American ANNIE AWARD (also known as the 'animation oscar') for 'Outstanding Individual Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Feature Production' for his production design work on MULAN in 1998. TEACHING CAREER:
His career has been a mixture of working in the industry and teaching, from 1975-1990 he was an Assistant Professor for Animation and Comic-strip-design at the university of Essen. • From 1987-1991 worked on Production Design for Disney’s ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Aladdin’ and ‘The Lion King’. And from 1991-1994 Production design and art direction at Spielberg’s London Amblimation Studio for ‘Balto’ and ‘Cats’. • 1994 Move and employment at Disney Feature Animation, Los Angeles. Stylistic designs for ‘Hercules’, ‘Fantasia 2000’, ‘Tin Soldier’, ‘Beethoven’s fifth symphony', and ‘Dinosaur’. • 1995 Production designer for ‘Mulan’ • 1998-2003 Design development for various Disney CG- and traditional animation projects, ‘Lilo and Stitch’, ‘Little Match-Girl’, ‘Brother Bear’, 'Wild Life’, ‘I Am’, ‘My Peoples’, ‘Snow Queen’, ‘Fraidy Cat’, ‘Beauty and the Beast Live Action’ (most of them shelved). • In 1998 did the logo design for 'The Lion King' Broadway show. • 2003 Move to the Philippines.
