ABSTRACT

This report describes the activities that I did during my industrial training period at Johor Port Berhad, Pasir Gudang for 10 weeks. The company provided a comprehensive range of port services to meet the individual needs to its customer.

The report also shows the details about background of the company and activities that I carried out during the training period. It also contains recommendations for the organizations and the university.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Preliminary Industrial training is the main requirements to be taken, completed dan by every student of the Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia (UTHM) for completing bachelor’s in civil engineer to qualify themselves to receive the award at by the end of study. During the period of industrial training, students can gather knowledge as well as experience and expertise of various work performed. Student can also relate all the theory that have been learned in to practical form during training. In addition, this training aimed to relate the theories learned in classroom or lab with actual working environment and give early exposure to students of work situation. It also helps students to enhancing their communication skills, experience, and expand the student experience thus, it will inspire the spirit of productive work and good relationship with workers.

1.2 Objective of Industrial Training

Generally, this industry training program is to achieve the following objectives:



Provide initial exposure and directly to the profession and the application in a real job



To provide an opportunity to communicate and work together with professionals from various fields



Experience working in a professional organization



Help build creativity, technical skills, interpersonal, communication and ability for work together in resolving problems with colleagues.



Nurture themselves for more confident and responsible as well as to build and strengthen relationships with professional outside the campus.

Therefore, the industrial training is seen to provide many positive effects expected from students at the end of the training. At the same time, it could help in improving the quality of Educational performance for each educational institution itself.

1.3 Importance of Industrial Training

Industrial training serves to give students the opportunity to understand more about the real work environment. Students are given the opening to practice knowledge acquired during the theoretical to the practical learning. Theory and practice are two different things that are equally important to adapt.

Those are the importance of industrial training are:

Students can practice real-life work situations in the future

Students can practice safety regulations in industry

2.1 Company Background

Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a Member of MMC Group commenced operation in 1977 as the Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port in Malaysia and is also the first port in Malaysia to be accorded with Free Zone status. Located at the southern tip of Peninsula Malaysia, Johor Port is strategically positioned at the heart of the sprawling 8,000 acres Pasir Gudang Industrial Estate and just across the Causeway from Singapore.

Johor Port operates a total area of 1,000 acres, 660 acres of which are designated as Free Zone. With 24 berths and a total berthing length of 4.75 km, the services and facilities within Johor Port include the Break Bulk Terminal, Dry Bulk Terminal, Liquid Terminal, Container Terminal, Container Storage Yard, Inland Container Depot and Warehousing Facilities. In addition, Johor Port is the appointed Free Zone Authority for the management of its Free Zone area. Johor Port is the largest palm oil terminal in the world and was designated as an approved London Metal Exchange (LME) location in 2004. As one of the largest in the region for the hubbing of Non-Ferrous Metals for clients such as Pacorini, Henry Bath B.V. and Metro International, Johor Port is currently ranked No. 6 out of 35 in the world for LME Cargo. Johor Port is also one of the largest discharging points for rice and cocoa in Malaysia as well as being one of the biggest terminals in Malaysia for fertilizer and cement. Multi-national clients at the Port include companies such as Shell, Chevron, Holcim/LaFarge, BASF and FJB. 14 | P a g e

2.4 Johor Port Facilities 2.4.1 Container Terminal 

The Johor Port Container Terminal (JCT) hosts a total of 700m berthing length which is designed to handle up to 1.2 million TEUs annually.



Equipped with 8 Quay Cranes, 19 RTGs, 9 Stackers and 50 Prime Movers, the Container Terminal can accommodate up to 3 vessels at any one time with maximum depth of 13.5m.



Equipped with a 250,000 m² of container yard and 11,000 m² CFS facilities and ed by a web-based Johor Port Container Terminal System (JCTS) which can facilitate real-time, integrated, paperless transactions for optimal commercial and operational efficiency.



Container Terminal also has its own dedicated rail depot with scheduled rail services to PTP and as well as being linked to the national rail grid and onward to neighbouring countries.



JCT currently serves various international main line operators including Pacific International Line, Wan Hai Lines, Evergreen Marine Corporation, CTP Line, K Line Maritime, TS Line and MSC Shipping Corporation.

2.4.2 Bulk and Break Bulk Terminal 

Johor Port Bulk and Break Bulk Terminal (BBT) currently operate 8 berths with maximum depth of 13.5m. The Bulk and Break Bulk Terminal currently offers around 73,364 sqm of open yard area and over 230,000m² of storage facility.



It handles various cargoes of any type and size, including both edible and nonedible dry bulk, break bulk, general cargo, project cargo, heavy lift and gasrelated cargoes. Equipped with 7 Shore Cranes, 23 forklifts, 3 conveyor belt and rail-mounted quay cranes, the Bulk and Break Bulk Terminal’s operation is ed by an on-line Multi-Purpose Terminal System (MPTS).

2.4.3 Liquid Terminal 

Johor Port Liquid Bulk Terminal provides specialised facilities to cater for both edible liquid and petrochemicals cargoes and is equipped with a network of pipelines with multiple high capacity loading arms to allow the liquid bulk cargo to be piped directly to tank farms at high transfer rates.



Johor Port is also the largest Edible Liquid Terminal in the world with terminal tank farm capacity of almost 500,000 cubic metres. 18 | P a g e

2.4.4 Warehouse Facilities 

Johor Port provides more than 2,000,000 sq ft of warehousing space and approximately 600,000 sq ft open yard allocated for LME cargo and Break Bulk cargo.



In addition, there is also more than 300,000 sq ft of warehousing space for value-added and distribution activities and more than 250,000 sq ft of warehousing space for grain storage.

2.4.5 Johor Port Free Zone 

Johor Port is appointed as the Free Zone Authority and directly manages its own Free Zone.



The Johor Port Free Zone area covers about two-thirds of the port area, providing ample space for companies wishing to engage in industrial and commercial activities within a Free Zone environment

TRAINING SCOPE

3.1 Introduction of Training

During my industrial training, I was exposed to the real working environment. I learned a lot about the sciences related to the field what I learned and what I need to know when I enter the workforce. I also learn how to manage a project form start until the end of the project. During my training session, I was attached at Facility Development Department (FDD) in Civil Engineering section. This department are more focus on major engineering project and Johor Port’s (JPB) implementation plan for infrastructure and facilities.

In addition, FDD also provide major services in engineering management and consultation for in Strategic Business Units (SBUs). This is to increase throughout customer satisfaction, revenue and productivity.

3.3 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 3.3.1 Project Management Objective and Scope This SOP is prepared to identify guidelines in executing activities related to project planning and implementation in ensuring all steps / action are in-line with JPB policies and advantageous to JPB as a whole. 3.4 Mode of Bidding Process There are three (3) types of bidding process which are purchasing (central store), quotation and tender. All this type is differentiate by the value of the of the price and this process were handle by Procurement Department. Table below shows the value of each type. During my internships period I more involved to tender type process. Tender is to invite bids for a project, or to accept a formal offer such as takeover bid. Tender usually refers to the process whereby governments and financial institutions invite bids for large projects that must be submitted within a finite deadline. 3.5 Project Involvement

During my internship periods, I had been attached to Civil Engineering section which is this section is divided into two part which are onshore and marine. Below is my involvement project in Johor Port. 3.5.1 JPB / 46 / 2016 - CONSTRUCTION AND COMPLETION OF THE REHABILITATION OF JETTY BT9, BT2, WHARF W5, W6 AND OTHER ASSOCIATED WORKS AT JOHOR PORT

This project is more inclined to the construction and rehabilitation works of Jetty BT9, BT2, Wharf 5 and Wharf 6 and other associate works at Johor Port, Pasir Gudang for the purpose catering the operational needs. My involvement for this project is more on learning and monitoring the process of the rehabilitation works at the site work and learning on the documentation process for this project. The scope of works for this project – as mentioned below:

BT9 – Protection and Repair Works

This is the scope of work on BT9 site: 1. Site surveying and cleaning 2. Install and weld semi-cylindrical pile 3. Install pile jacketing 4. Sand and concrete infill to pile 5. Rehabilitation of upper and lower column -

The rehabilitation of column/beams/stump is because of; 

Rebar is exposed or corroded



Crack line or corrosion is present

The procedure rehabilitation of the column i.

Hack the concrete to expose steel bars and the corroded bar shall be replaced with new bar of same size welded to existing non-rusting portions of bar

ii.

The replaced bars shall be fully covered by 2 coats approved reinforcement corrosion protection coating

iii.

Prior to the protection work with grout cover and coating the hackedout concrete shall be treated with bonding bridge and rehabilitated with pressure grouted repair mortar

iv.

Proper curing provided as it is the requirement of specification

Removal of 100mm minimum thickness surfacing concrete and reconstruct with G55 early strength of concrete levelled to fall drainage holes.

At spalled concrete area/steel reinforcement corroded area, remove existing cast in situ concrete (approximately 260mm thick) to top of precast concrete plank.

iii.

Replace corroded rebars with new bars welded to non-rusting bars at both ends. Reconstruct with G55 early strength concrete levelled to fall to drainage hole.

3.5.2 JPB/17/2017 – THE REPLACEMANT OF THE DAMAGED MARINE FENDERS AT BBT WHARVES AND MAINTENANCE OF ALL MARINE FENDER IN JOHOR PORT, PASIR GUDANG FOR JOHOR PORT (the works)

This project is more inclined for the replacement of damaged fender at break bulk terminal wharf and maintenance all fender in Johor Port, Pasir Gudang.

From this project, my involvement is more to monitor and learn on how the process of fender installation by considering:

Fender is the main type of marine equipment to absorb kinetic energy from boats, vessels and ships against the berthing structure, wharves or dock. It is to prevent damage to vessel and berthing structure in mooring process. There are many types of fender which have emerged over the years. Below is the type of fender used: 

3.5.3. JPB/ 20/ 2016 (R) – CONSTRUCTION AND COMPLETION OF TWO STOREY WAREHOUSE AND ALL ANCILLARY WORKS AT JOHOR PORT FOR JOHOR PORT BERHAD This project is more inclined to the development of new multi – storey warehouse within the vicinity of Johor Port, for the purpose of catering the operational needs.

The scope of work for this project: i.

Construction of the two storey Warehouse 3E including all the founding works, superstructure works and all ancillary works

ii.

Construction of all M&E facilities required for all the commissioning of the warehouse.

iii.

Construction of all the ing external infrastructure eg: sewers, drains, water supply, hydrants, road, etc.

iv.

Demolition of existing building and facilities

For this project, my involvement is more to inspection to the structure, the mechanical and electrical facilities at the warehouse after all the construction done. Example item that need to be inspect before handover to the client are slab, finishing, beam, distribution box, cable, firefighting system, elevators, lamp (lux), and etc. This is to make sure there is no complaint from client after the handover of the warehouse.

From this project, I had learned about the mechanical and electrical system such as ventilation and firefighting system.

Ventilation System – Ventilation is the process by which clean air (normally outdoor air) is intentionally provided to a space and stale air is removed.

There are two type of ventilation system at Warehouse 3E a) Natural b) Mechanical

For ground floor of the warehouse, the ventilation system is mechanical and natural are apply while for the first floor only natural ventilation.

Firefighting system

-

Installed in building to help fire fighter quickly attack the fire. Essentially, a hydrant system is a water reticulation system used to transport water to limit the amount hose that firefighters have to lay, thus speeding up the firefighting process.

The flow of the system started from the firefighting water tank. The water supply from SAJ to the tank. Next, water is transferred to the pump house and it will be divided into three type of pump based on the pressure drop from the main pipe. The three type of pump are sprinkler duty pump, supply pump and jockey pump. All this pump gets power supply from TNB and if the TNB power supply shut down, these pumps generates power by using diesel.

This pressure meter determine which pump will generate first. Firstly, sprinkler duty pump will generate first. Then if the pressure drops the supply pump will generate and lastly if the pressure keeps decreasing, the supply pump together with jockey pump.

For Warehouse 3E, they use SPKA (Automatic Fire Alarm Monitoring Control System). Purpose of this system is to detect a fire in its early stages, notify the person in charge and Bomba via SMS. Person in charge will give a confirmation to Bomba if there is a fire occurs. This system uses Celcom network.

3.6 Safety in Johor Port Safety induction is a compulsory requirement that all the project’s employees and general workers must attend safety induction host by MMCES. Those attended the induction shall be given an identity and apply permit to work which is nature of work such as hot work, diving, confine space and other to allow them to work inside the project are.

Tool box talk shall also be implemented on a daily or weekly basis in the morning before commencement of the works. This session shall give an opportunity to remind the workers and allow for effective communication in ensuring safety practices to be fully adhered too.

Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Monitored (HHSE) officer shall check to ensure that all the workers have Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) green card for working in the project and comply with CIDB’s requirements. Arrangement will be made to bring trainer and facilities the issuance of green card to those who don’t have one.

Safety is the most important aspect that need to be alert especially in working area. Safety is a priority in Johor Port, every worker needs to be adhere to the rules and regulations stated for their own safety, to keep the quality of works and to keep the save environment.

Below are the 10 golden S.H.E rules in Johor Port.

1. Johor Port Berhad Permit. 

Johor Port entry permit must be worn at all time during presence in Johor Port.

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 

PPE as safety shoes, safety helmet, safety vest, long pant, shirt is mandatory when entering Johor Port operation areas such as warehouse, jetties, wharves and vessels.

3. Speed. 

Speeding is prohibited in Johor Port. 15km/h (max) at operation areas and 45 km/h (max) at non-operation areas.

4. Work safely with manners and report on any unsafe action and unsafe condition to the superior or PSSD

5. Smoking is prohibited in Johor Port except at designated area.

6. PTW is mandatory for construction work including maintenance activities.

7. Clam and obey instructions from work leader or PSSD during any emergency.

8. Parking. 

Reverse parking is mandatory in Johor Port except for certain locations.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSSION & SUGESSTION

4.1 Comments

After my training period at Johor Port Berhad, I got many valuable experiences as a student in Degree level. Here I guided and mentored to a range of knowledge during the training session. I also have opportunity to explore and experience to learn new thing in other civil engineering field such as in marine field since I was attached under marine section in FDD. I also involved in Mechanical and Electrical field during this training this to expose me to other engineering field too. 64 | P a g e

A lot of experience I gain during this training especially on project management. Here I learn about how the project process from the documentation process until the end of the project. For my knowledge and added value, I also learn about vessel and marine term during my training. After the training periods, I realize that civil engineering is the wide field that I need to explore more and gain more experience to added in my knowledge and for my future working experience.

4.2 Suggestions

My suggestion for Johor Port management soon for the internship program, industrial training at Johor Port Berhad can be improved by carefully planning the training that will give to students and also give student more task for them to give the experience to handle the problem. In addition, I can recommended to the company to provide more opportunities to student from university or college to training in this company so from here student can gain more knowledge in the Engineering field.

4.3 Conclusion

Over the past 10 weeks during my industrial training, I gained a lot of experience and knowledge, for example:

As I can conclude throughout my industrial training at Facility Development Department, Johor Port. A lot of experience and knowledge that I gained in Civil Engineering field. Besides, this organization has awarded to myself with a golden opportunity of gaining valuable knowledge (particularly theoretical) and experience in real working wold upon completion of my studies. Industrial training is the good exercise to student for encourage them towards excellence and developing countries. Via this training I managed to explore and learn new things such as handling equipment, involved in engineering drawing/plan, improving communication skill through teamwork, and all this would be credit and plus point to becoming a good employer.
