Why should business be socially responsible: Social responsibility is a voluntary effort on the part of business to take various steps to satisfy the expectation of the different interest groups. As you have already learnt, the interest groups may be owners, investors, employees, consumers, government and society or community. But the question arises, why should the business come forward and be responsible towards these interest groups. Let us consider the following points: i. Public Image - The activities of business towards the welfare of the society earn goodwill and reputation for the business. The earnings of business also depend upon the public image of its activities. People prefer to buy products of a company that engages itself in various social welfare programmes. Again, good public image also attracts honest and competent employees to work with such employers. ii. Government Regulation - To avoid government regulations businessmen should discharge their duties voluntarily. For example, if any business firm pollutes the environment it will naturally come under
strict government regulation, which may ultimately force the firm to close down its business. Instead, the business firm shouldengage itself in maintaining a pollution free environment. iii. Survival and Growth -Every business is a part of the society. So for its survival and growth, from the society is very much essential. Business utilizes the available resources like power, water, land, roads, etc. of the society. So it should be the responsibility of every business to spend a part of its profit for the welfare of the society. iv. Employee satisfaction - Besides getting good salary and working in a healthy atmosphere, employees also expect other facilities like proper accommodation, transportation, education and training. The employers should try to fulfill all the expectation of the employees because employee satisfaction is directly related to productivity and it is also required for the long-term prosperity of the organisation. For example, if business spends money on training of the employees, it will have more efficient people to work and thus, earn more profit.
v. Consumer Awareness - Now-a-days consumers have become very conscious about their rights. They protest against the supply of inferior and harmful products by forming different groups. This has made it obligatory for the business to protect the interest of the consumers by providing quality products at the most competitive price.
INTRODUCTION: Consumers: A Consumer Is A Person, Who Consumers The Goods. Consumers Means A Person Who Buys Any Goods Or Avails Of Services. Consumer Is Given Topmost Importance In The Modern Market. Theoretically, Consumers Is Regarded As The King Of The Market. Actually, The Businessmen Are Supposed To Identify The Consumer Wants first And Then Some Organize The Business Activities To Satisfy Them.
Case Or Arguments For Social Responsibility : The important arguments in favour of obligations or responsibilities by the business community’s interests are under: Public Expectations: one of the important arguments infavour of social obligations is that the society gives the business to exist, to grow, to expand and to earn profit. thus, the business should be operated as per the public expectations of the society. Favorable Environment: as the society always offers various facilities and different concessions along with the positive response to the business unit, the business community should not misuse the natural resources or the human resources for the production of goods and services.
Favorable Public Image:
in order to get public and co-operation, it is necessary for the business organization to create favorable image in the minds of the public. Consumers Movements: the business organization should see that the goods of better quality should be supplied at reasonable prices to the consumers. as the consumers are well organized, they cannot tolerate any injustice caused by the business. Utilization Of Resource: generally, a business organization has required to use huge resources in of finance, manpower, talents, skills and functional expertise. Moral Responsibility: it is the moral responsibility of the business community to take necessary steps for undertaking various schemes of social well being.
case or arguments against social responsibility: Economic activity: business activity is an economic activity, and therefore, it should only undertake the economic activities. if business enters in social areas through social areas through social or non- economic activities then it will divert its attention to the social issues and thereby affect its basic required activates adversely. Profit Maximization: business always aims at earning maximum profit only. if the business community takes responsibility of the social welfare programmes /activities then it divides its earning into two parts which next to impossible. Social And Business Skill: business and social responsibility are different, in nature. businessmen should concentrate only on business activities, as people who runs business may
not be capable to handle the situation of social problems.
Economical Justification:
business is not a social activity. from the view point of the huge investment and expected scale of returns, the shareholders/businessmen would not like to divert the company’s or firm’s funds and resources in an unproductive way for an unprofitable ventures/purposes.
