Section '1' Reading 1.

Read the age given below and answer the questions that follow. Elephants live in peace with other creatures. They graze comfortably alongside buffaloes, pigs and even horses. Their large feet touch the ground causing the least possible disturbance. While small elephants may intrude upon the space of the other animals, adult elephants usually avoid fights. They even relocate to other areas to maintain peace. After many years of observing the elephants in Sri Lanka, one environmentalist concluded that elephants live on of amity with every quadruped in the forest and that elephants neither regard them as friends nor foes. It is a commonly held belief that the sheer size of the elephants, combined with its enormous appetite causes environmental destruction. But researchers have noted that in fact, in their natural habitat, elephants actually help the environment. Because of their migratory habits elephants create pathways which are useful to other creatures. During the dry season, elephants use their forefeet to dig holes, tapping underwater springs , thereby providing new watering places for themselves and other animals. The seeds spread by the elephant dung germinate, resulting in new plant and tress which enrich the environment and produce new food supply. Removal of some parts of plants and trees by elephants has a pruning effect which helps them grow in healthy manner. Last but not the least, elephants convert woodlands into grasslands thereby creating new habitats for other species. For many scientists, elephants are very important to the environement. Such scientists classify them as ‘Keystone Species’ By this they mean that the elephant’s ecological role is so significant that it is a key factor to the maintenance and continuity of the ecosystem. According to their view if the elephant disappears the entire ecosystem may be lost. (A) On the basis of your reading of the age answer the following questions briefly.
