STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM What are the effects of unemployment among youths in my community of Lowmans Leeward?

Research Questions

1. What are some of the causes of the high youth unemployment rate in my community? 2. How does this affect the lively hood of residents who are unemployed? 3. How can the employment rate be improve?

REASON FOR SELECTING THE AREA OF RESEARCH 3

Unemployment is a situation whereby a person or persons are willing and able to work but are unable to find a job. This is one of the biggest problems which is affecting my community of Lowmans Leeward especially among youths. Unemployment in my community not only affects the unemployed but it affects everyone whether you are employed or unemployed. Firstly, jobless young people face survival issues; because they do not have their own savings. Even worse many new graduates can only gain financial assistance from their parents. Due to this fact many families in my community have fallen into crisis because parents their children off of pensions or low salaries. Furthermore when the new graduates are forced to stay at home because they are not able to get their first work contract they seek any opportunity to earn money for survival. They ignore regulations and are willing to take higher risk to make money. This is threatening to the possession of others in my community, due to the unemployment among youths in my community the crime rate has increased drastically. Youths are now involved in illegal acts such as drugs, theft, gambling and fraud; some young ladies have even chosen prostitution. Hence, this is the reason for selecting this area of research.

METHOD OF RESEARCH 5

The method used to obtain the data for this project was through the use of printed questionnaires. This method was used because a questionnaire has a number of advantages.

The thirty questionnaires were distributed. They consisted of twenty (20) the questionnaires were carried out in complete confidentiality. Hence, respondents were not required to include personal information such as their names and addresses.

PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTION OF DATA The study was conducted in the month July 2015. Two weeks in the month of July (July 18 th-July 30th) were used to collect data for this study. The thirty questionnaires which consist of 20 items were distrusted to the residents of Lowmans Hill and respondents were given (5) five days to complete the questionnaires and return them to the researcher. Analysis and Presentation of Data, the data will be analyzed using a bar graph, histogram and a pie charts. Descriptive statistics will also be used in analyzing and presenting data.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA question one was geared towards collecting data about the gender of the twenty(20) persons who participated in the research 45% were males and 55% 12

were

females or nine (9) males and eleven (11) females.it can be concluded that the majority of persons who participated were females and the minority males. this question was geared to finding out the respondents age 40% of persons are between 24-28,25% are the ages 18-23 20% are the ages 29-30 and another 15% are 31-35. it is noticed that most respondents were between the ages of 18-23. this shows that a large number of young people answered the questionnaire. the level of education that was most obtained is the A'Levels which was 25% followed by the master's degree 25%, the bachelors degree 20% then the associates degree, CCSLC/CVQ the lowest level of education obtained was the primary level exactly 5 out of 20 respondents were employed which is 25% and the unemployed an outstanding 75%. Question 5 Have You ever been employed? of the 20 respondents eighteen (18) were unemployed and the remainder employed which is an outstanding number of unemployed persons in the community. 75% unemployed 25% employed. fifteen percent (15%) of the respondents were previously employed in agriculture twenty in clerical and the remainder of the respondents were employed as cashiers at various supermarkets. Question 7 How long have you been employed? an outstanding number of fifty percent(50%) were employed for six (6) months twenty five (25%) for two months and the other twenty five for one year. Question 8 was your employment meant to be full time? ninety five (95%)of the respondents said no and the remaining five percent (5%) said yes in fact the employment was meant to be full time employment. Choose the options that best describes the reasons for your current unemployment? There were a number of reasons why the respondents were unemployed, under qualified and lack of experience twenty percent (20%)unwillingness to work, last job was completed fifteen percent (15%)lack of appropriate skill, job not paying enough ten percent (10%) and a five percent (5%)of no job available. Question 10 How are your needs met during this period of unemployment? Odd jobs is one of the most prevalent answers, which indicated that the respondents did what they had to make ends meet. friends, family and relatives overseas all had the same amount of respondents twenty percent (20%) and fifteen percent(15%)stated that the church helped/helps to meet their needs in times of unemployment. Question 11 What do you do with your spare time? five percent (5%)of the respondents said they indulge in reading to learn more, forty percent (40%) said they 'limed' on the blocks five percent (5%) said sports sixty percent (60%said social media and forty percent (40%)said they preferred to watch television. Question 12 Have You considered any of the following? tick which applies. sixty percent(60%) of the respondents said that they would partake in illegal activities willingly.ten percent (10%) considered starting a business, ten percent (10%) thought about stealing and robbing, five percent(5%) said that they won't mind volunteering, ten percent (10) said that they would in fact settle for a less ideal job to make ends meet and the latter five percent (5%) wanted to seek further education.
