Informal Formative­  When the small group creates the timeline the teacher should monitor student participation and accuracy of answers to ensure the students comprehended the story. Summative­  The authentic activities will be graded to demonstrate student comprehension.

Lesson Rationale

The students are reading a book that is matched for their specific reading abilities and divided into small groups to aid in better learning instruction. By ensuring the groups are small it allows for more individual instruction and positive student/teacher interactions. By allowing the group to participate in a group timeline it also allows for student interaction and the teacher to monitor comprehension.  The authentic learning tasks will make the students' learning more meaningful.

Peculiar  Authentic Learning Task B Video Instructional Materials Attachments: (handouts, etc.) 1.  Story Maps.pdf I. Pre­Reading A. Activate/Build Prior Knowledge The overall theme of The Rainbow Fish is the importance of sharing, and it uses ocean creatures to depict the message.  Allow students at the table to brainstorm what kind of animals they would expect to find in the ocean.  Next, the teacher can ask if the students have ever had an experience that caused their friends to get upset with them.  The teacher can allow a few volunteers to share their experiences.  This question allows the students to think of their prior knowledge/experiences and possibly connect to the text. B. Preview/Predictions First, start by showing the students the cover of the book.  The teacher can then flip through a few pages and show pictures from the book. Next, ask the class what they think the story will be about. After a few students have volunteered and given a few ideas, the teacher should give a short book talk to give the students more background knowledge of the book. Next, ask the class to make a few predictions about the story. Instruct the students to think of a prediction and to turn to a partner and share their prediction.  This will allow participation for all students.  C. Vocabulary Scales­ each of the small, thin horny or bony plates protecting the skin of fish and reptiles, typically overlapping one another Tier 3­ science subject specifics The teacher can give a mini lesson on animals that have scales, possibly showing the students an example of something with scales Ordinary­ Plain/simple Tier 1­ basic meaning Shimmery/glimmering­ to shine with a soft tremulous or fitful light Tier 3­ high frequency word within the story The teacher can wear many shimmery stickers During reading the teacher can point out the shimmery scales on the rainbow fish Peculiar­ strange Tier 1­ basic meaning Have the students locate the vocabulary words given.  First,  out a graphic organizer containing the vocabulary words, part of speech and the definition.  Have each student take a turn reading the word, part of speech, and the definition.  Have the students clap out the words to better understand the syllables of each word.  Next go around the table and have each student read a sentence that contains one of the new vocabulary words.  This may give the students a better understanding of each word by seeing it used in context. D. Set A Purpose Finally, in the pre­reading process have the students brainstorm qualities and characteristics of being a good friend.  Create a word web of qualities that the class has come up with. This allows students to have more background knowledge and understand the theme better. Ask the students the purpose question. What bad/good friend qualities are exhibited? II. Reading Have the students read the story and stop at an appropriate part in the story to ask the purpose questions in the story. While the students are reading, have the students begin to fill out their story map graphic organizer.  Monitor the students reading and ensure they are comprehending the story by checking their story maps while they are reading.  Ensure that the students wait until the end of the story to fill out the sequence of events to ensure that they are picking out the most notable events.  III. Responding

A. Revisit Purpose Setting Question Have students think about the purpose questions in the story.  After students give responses to the purpose questions, give  and  the responses further.  What bad/good friend qualities are exhibited? Procedure B. Clarify Additional Concepts/Vocabulary During reading, the teacher can begin to share their sparkly stickers to the students within the guided reading group. C. ing comprehension A story map will help the students understand the story and the characters more in depth.  A story map allows students to clearly identify the characters, setting, the problem, the solution and the sequence of events within the story.  Ensure the students understand their new vocabulary words and provide synonyms to students who are still having difficulty.  D. Refer to additional Resources Explain to the students the importance of friendship. Ask the students if they could relate to the story   Introduce the students to some additional related literature books with the ocean theme. This will help the students when they begin the applying the literature/extending across the curriculum section of the lesson plan.  Refer to the pre­reading section when the students named examples on animals that could be found in the ocean.  Contain some informational related literature about animals in the ocean to engage students in cross­curricular learning.   E. Additional purpose setting questions Guide the students through reading and assist the students in filling out their story map. Have the students continue reading independently and prompt the students with the remaining purpose questions. Do you think it was an appropriate choice for the rainbow fish to seek help from the wise octopus? Do you think the rainbow fish will continue to share his sparkle scales? Do you think the rainbow fish became a good friend? How did the rainbow fish’s attitude change throughout the book? IV. Review/Reread Strategies Exploring             After the students fill in their sequence of events, use the events of their choosing to create a group timeline on chart paper. The students should have some of the main ideas/key events on their story concept map.  The students can be given scissors and allowed to cut out their sequence events boxes on their story map chart.  Next, give the students tape and have the students tape their ideas and events on the group timeline.  By using tape the ideas/events can be changed if needed.  The teacher should monitor the student’s participation during this activity to ensure their ideas match the story.  V. Applying the Literature/Extending Reading Across the Curriculum A. First create a PowerPoint presentation with facts about different sea creatures. Have the class take a field trip to the beach.  Allow them to search for seashells and find other things washed up on the beach. If the students are on the bayside of the water, they can use a seining net to catch small critters and have more of an understanding of the animals in the water. The students may get small fish, crabs, and snails in the net.  They can be taught about some of the local animals inhabiting the water. B. Have the students understand the importance of ocean cleanup. There are many ocean animals that are related to the theme of the literacy e­unit.  The students can watch the following video on ocean pollution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQTUWK7CM­Y.  The students should understand the harmful effects of plastic in the ocean. Next, have the students brainstorm ways on how they can help take care of our oceans by creating a word web or a chart. By having the suggestions written out, it appeals to visual learners.  Next, have the students write a letter explaining why it is important to avoid ocean pollution. The students can learn the proper format of writing a letter and gain practice through writing one. A mini lesson can also be taught to teach students how to write persuasively.  C. The instructor will read The Rainbow Fish to the class. Next, the students can create their own rainbow fish with the use of aluminum foil. The purpose to use aluminum foil during this art activity is to give the fish a metallic design like the rainbow fish in the story.  The students can outline a stencil of a fish on the foil and then color the fish with Sharpie markers to create a “rainbow fish”. The students can also outline and design an ocean background.  This activity relates to the literacy ocean unit and allows the students to create a fun art project.  D. Give the students a geography lesson on the different oceans.  Next, have the students pick their favorite ocean creature and research information on the creature that they choose.  Ensure that the students name the ocean that their sea creature can be found.  Try to have the students find a book (at their reading level) on their sea creature. Have the students take a trip to the aquarium. Hopefully the students will be able to see the sea creature

that they chose to research.  The students can learn a plethora of information about some of the ocean creatures exhibited at the aquarium.  After returning from the aquarium, have the students present their sea creature that they have chosen to research to the class.  The students can also be asked to present at the school’s science fair.  These presentations demonstrate their understanding and enhances the student’s oral skills.
