The Turtle By George Vukelich Explications: PLOT: "Jimmy. This turtle is putting up his life. In the road here you are putting up nothing. You have nothing to lose at all" (167, 3, 1-3). This quote reveals the man versus self, man versus man, and man versus environment conflict towards Jimmy. First, the man versus man emotional conflict starts off by Jimmy trying to think a way on how to defeat the turtle; however, his father is not happy with the thought in killing the turtle using the modern ways, reinforcing the fair and simplistic thematic idea. Secondly, the man versus self-emotional conflict happens afterward since Jimmy was fascinated by how fairness in nature can affect society in a complex way. In of setting, Old Tony and Jimmy are sitting down starting at the turtle and thinking on a way to defeat it. CHARACTER: "To survive? No for, sport. This old one, he takes what he needs. I do not kill him for being in nature's plan. I do not play God" (167, 6, 2-3). The above lines show how Old Tony's character is very wise and strategic for trying to figure out ideas on how nature can be an affective source to all human beings. Moreover, he is an excellent father for trying to show his son on how to think critically in a certain perspective, unlike being close minded with just modern features. In of setting, Old Tony is trying to prove to his son that in order to be fair with the turtle, you need to have a man versus man physical conflict in the water to have equal abilities. SETTING: "The turtle went waddling forward across the road and topped over the sand should and disappeared in the brushy growth of the creek bank" (168, 2, 2-3). In of setting, Old Tony pushed the turtle and gave it a go to the creek bank before anyone could injure it, revealing his caring and wise characteristics. Old Tony is trying to prove to his son that before doing anything you need to think about the consequences and how it well benefits you. In the beginning, Jimmy was thinking of killing the turtle with a gun, however, Old Tony was not happy about that which shows that he is trying to teach his son how to be a smart critical thinker.
