Which is the best book to start learning physics?
Some favorites from my undergrad years, almost all of which still live on my bookshelf:
What is the best basic physics book? What is the best book to learn physics for those who are weak in physics?
1. The Feynman Lectures for a general overview. These are a treasure. Read them, learn them, love them. 2. Landau & Lifshitz for classical mechanics. 3. Griffiths for electricity & magnetism. Some of the problems are rather painful, though. Expect to develop a lifelong bond with your copy of Mathematica while working through them. If this book is too advanced for you, try starting with Purcell; if it's too easy (or if you just enjoy pain), go for Jackson instead.
Which is the best book to start Modern Physics with? What are the best introductory books on quantum physics? What is the best book to make physics basics clear?
4. Griffiths for quantum mechanics. Looking back, I particularly like his overview of probability and wave functions at the beginning. Also, I'd recommend paying close attention to the worked examples. 5. You guessed it... Griffiths for particle physics too! This book is a great resource for a number of topics, including special relativity. I also strongly prefer the way he explains particle spin / angular momentum in this book, so if you find yourself confused by the explanation in his quantum mechanics book, you might try looking here instead. 6. Binney & Tremaine for astrophysics. I'm less familiar with this book (never used it for a class), but everyone seems to agree it's the gold standard. 7. We used Riley, Hobson, & Bence aka "the brick" as a general resource for mathematical methods. It's pretty handy as a reference, but kind of terse, so it's not necessarily the best place to see something for the first time. 8. I learned probability and statistics mostly from A First Course in Probability by Sheldon Ross (in the context of a computer science course). Many of the worked examples are pretty painful. But there's a very generous number of problems with solutions, plus plenty more without solutions if you somehow exhaust those. I solved (almost) all the ones with solutions in preparation for the final exam; worked like a charm. 9. If you ever find yourself running low on motivation, you might try taking a moment to enjoy some of Feynman's less technical pieces. In order of increasing technicality, these include Surely You're Joking, The Character of Physical Law, and QED. I also enjoyed reading his personal letters, compiled in Perfectly Reasonable Deviations from the Beaten Track. 10. Along the same lines, pretty much anything by Carl Sagan is useful for rekindling the sense of wonder and curiosity that presumably prompted your interest in the first place.
Best of luck! My answer's a bit short on advanced theory and some specific mathematical topics, so I hope other people will have further suggestions in those domains. Updated 24 Apr 2013 • View Upvotes

By the order you should read them: (ommited books in statistical mechanics which are often quite bad in my opinion, and optics) 14) calculus, differential geometry, probability and vector analysis books. Sorry no recommendations here.. 5) Goldstein, Classical Mechanics 6) Jackson, Classical Electrodynamics 7) Sakurai, Quantum Mechanics 8) Feynman & Hibbs, Path integrals in quantum mechanics 9) Peskin & Shroeder, Quantum Field Theory (actually for QFT it's not enough but probably the closest to perfection) 10) Misner, Gravitation (could be #7) Written 29 Mar 2014 • View Upvotes

1. Feynman's Lectures on Physics. Pure solid gold. I got low price eds from Pearson. If possible, get the tips on physics and his lectures on Gravitation. 2. Classical Mechanics: Goldstein, Poole, Safko. Read this for a strong base in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. Also contains many obscure treatments on gyroscopes and the math behind canonical transformations. Landau 1 is a good parallel study to this. 3. Quantum Mechanics: Feynman 3 and Griffiths for an introduction. Sakurai all the way for medium to advanced QM. Shankar's book is mathematical but gets a lot of ground covered. CohenTannoudji if accessible. Landau 3 is a tad bid complicated, neverthless, interesting parallel read. 4. EM: Purcell. It's how I got to know relativistic ED before I even completed the main course from Landau 2 and Feynman 2. 5. Relativity: Einstein's book is a very good and oft neglected introduction to the subject. However, Feynman again covers this in 1 and the last chapter of 2 is dedicated to curved spacetime. Landau 2 covers the basics of special relativity and tensors. 6. Particle Physics: QFT first. Peskin/Schroeder is the go to book. Feynman and Hibbs' book is also a good intro. Anthony Zee's book and his online lectures are fascinating and get you into the subject really fast. Lectures on nuclear theory by Landau gives a decent introduction to the experimental models of the nucleus. Then, there is always Griffiths.
Legend: Feynman 1: Mechanics, Heat, Light, Sound Feynman 2: EM and Fluid Mech Feynman 3: QM. Solid state QM. Landau 1: Classical Mechanics Landau 2: Classical Theory Of Fields Landau 3: QM(Non Rel) Written 17 Jul 2014 • View Upvotes

Some great books are: Quantum theory of fields Weinberg Modern quantum mechanics sakurai Lectures on general relativity Sean Carroll I would add the book about cosmology and general relativity written by Weinberg. Introduction to particle physics griffiths, it's just an easy introduction but it's well written and humoristic sometimes. Feynman lectures of course. I liked also Statistical mechanics pathria Written 27 Mar 2013 • View Upvotes

How do Americans feel about the British on July 4? Peter Flom, I live here 9.6k Views • Upvoted by Clare Celea, I live in the UK.
There was an ad, a long time ago, for British Airways (I think it was still BOAC), in which an English actor (maybe Robert Morley) said "Please come home. All is forgiven". That's my feeling. July 4 is no longer (if it ever was) really about the American Revolution or British wrongs or anything, it's just about pride in America and such. Besides, in 1776 my ancestors were somewhere in east...
