Course Introduction /Objectives The course aims at a disionate comprehension and objective analysis of the various dimensions of Pakistan. It is designed to enable a balanced perception of the ideological rationale, and the political factors & forces that generated events leading to the creation of Pakistan. History-centric description of events and personalities has been avoided to rationalize the course. More important is the impact that personalities and events had. The Cotemporary Pakistan is seen as the outcome of complex political and constitutional processes that evolved during the post-independence era. Understanding of the political processes and constitutional developments that determined the nature of authoritarianism and democratic experiences in Pakistan is imperative for the study of Pakistan. Equally important is the knowing of social structures and ethnic divide, the plural character of Pakistan’s society. The main strands of Pakistan’s foreign policy are to be examined in the context of historical constraints, geo-strategic location and stresses of contemporary world. Based on this perspective, a futuristic scenario of Pakistan will be explored. Pakistan Studies, therefore, should act as a window to future.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students should be able to:  Understand the true perspective out of which Pakistan surfaced on the face of earth.  Analyze important political, economic and constructional issues confronting the country.  Predict a future of the country.

Case studies and Team Presentation: Students will be required to write term papers on significant social political and cultural issues.

Team Presentation: Students will form teams of 3-4 and select one of the cases we will be doing this semester. The team will present the case on the day it is due using a Power Point presentation. Presentations should be well prepared, rehearsed, and of professional quality. A copy of the handouts and/or visuals should be provided to the professor and the class before the presentation.

Violation of Academic Honesty Policy: If I received two cases / assignments that are identical or virtually identical (including spreadsheets), both cases will receive a zero. If you violate the Academic Honesty policy for a second time, you will receive a failing grade for the course.

How to Keep Your Professor Happy:  Class attendance is required. I will take attendance at each class. You are allowed “6” misses. If you miss more than 6 classes for any reason, you will be withdrawn from the course. In addition, this class lasts for 90 minutes. As a courtesy to the professor and other students, be prepared to arrive at class and be in your seat on time.  Similarly, if you need to get something to eat or drink, do so before class. If you need to use the restroom, do so before class. If is very disruptive to have people rustling food wrappers or walking in and out after class has started.  If you carry a cell phone, turn it off before coming to class. During class your phone belongs in your pocket, purse or carrying case. If I see you using your phone during class to make or receive calls or to text message, I will excuse you from the class by marking absent thereby giving you plenty of time to talk with your friends.

 I will not tolerate disruptive behavior in class. It’s rude and interferes with learning. If your behavior in class is disruptive, I will istratively withdraw you from the course and you will have to take it some other semester.  The University Dress Code has to be observed, no warnings will be given, and violators will be asked politely to leave the class and consequently will be marked absent.

Participation: Students are expected to attend all class periods and to have read the assigned material and cases in advance of class (although not necessarily with perfect comprehension). Advanced preparation and class participation are crucial for periods in which we discuss cases. During discussion sessions, I generally keep track of the insightful and useful comments students make. (Talk for talk's sake is not rewarded.)

Communication: I update the portal frequently for assigned readings and cases. When I have an urgent message I use e-mail. Please make sure your e-mail address with the university portal is accurate because it is the address I use to reach you. 4
