HISTORY: Hyundai Motor India Limited was formed in 6 May 1996 by the Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea. When Hyundai Motor Company entered the Indian Automobile Market in 1996 the Hyundai brand was almost unknown throughout India. During the entry of Hyundai in 1996, there were only five major automobile manufacturers in India, i.e. MUL, HM, PAL, TELCO and M&M. Daewoo had entered the Indian automobile market with Cielo just three years back while Ford, Opel and Honda had entered less than a year back. For more than a decade till Hyundai arrived, Maruti Suzuki had a complete dominance and monopoly over the enger Cars segment because TELCO and M&M were solely Utility and Commercial Vehicle Manufacturers. HMIL's first car, the Hyundai Santro was launched in 23 September 1998 and was a runaway success. To cater to rising demand, HMIL commissioned its second plant in February 2008, which produces an additional 300,000 units per annum, raising HMIL’s total production capacity to 600,000 units per annum. In continuation with its commitment to providing Indian customers with cutting-edge global technology, HMIL has set up a modern multi-million dollar research and development facility in the cyber city of Hyderabad. It aims to become a centre of excellence for automobile engineering and ensure quick turnaround time to changing consumer needs. As HMC’s global export hub for compact cars, HMIL is the first automotive company in India to achieve the export of 10 lakh cars in just over a decade. HMIL currently exports cars to more than 110 countries across EU, Africa, Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Australia. It has been the number one exporter of enger car of the country for the sixth year in a row. To its growth and expansion plans, HMIL currently has a 307 strong dealer network and 627 strong service points across India, which will see further expansion in 2010.

Sales and service network: As of March 2011, HMIL has 451 dealerships and more than 647 Hyundai Authorised Service Centers in 340 cities across India. HMIL also operates its own dealerships known as Hyundai Motor Plazas in large metros across India. HMIL has the second largest sales and service network in India after Maruti Suzuki.

HYUNDAI INDIA LTD CARS IN INDIA: Hyundai Motors India was established in the year 1996 in Irrungattukottai near Chennai. It is known as Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL). The total cost incurred in building this manufacturing unit was $ 614 million. This is their only manufacturing unit in India. However, they are planning to open a second manufacturing unit as well. Hyundai Motor Co was established in 1967 and is the now the largest car manufacturer of South Korea. Hyundai Motor Co (HMC) is a division of Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. HMIL's manufacturing unit in Chennai is equipped with state of the art equipments. They have all the required production and planning technology for modern production, quality control and testing mechanism. Production and Planning They are probably in the most elite group of car manufacturers in India to have such technological knowledge. Their main aim is to make India a global hub for export of cars. A number of new Hyundai Cars are in the pipeline. They believe that India has the potential to achieve such a feat and in order to take India a step further they are investing heavily here. The growth of HMIL has been exceptionally high with 17.26% in 2005 when compared to 2004. Their export growth has been exceptional as well with an astonishing growth of 27.2% for the year 2005 which amounts to 1,800 crores. They are also planning to increase their dealership network and their after sales service. In the year 2005, HMIL shipped their first consignment to the United Kingdom. Previously they had exported to some countries in the European Union but they were left hand drive cars. However, this is for the first time that they are exporting right hand drive cars. The same year they also achieved a milestone of manufacturing the fastest 200,000th export car. The Chennai plant of HMIL is equipped with The Press Shop, The Body Shop, The Paint Shop, The Aluminum Fondry, The Engine & Transmission Shop, The Plastic Extrusion Unit, The Plastic Paint Shop, and The Test Track. Awards and Certification HMIL has been certified with ISO 14001 certification due to their high quality environmental standards. They have also installed the Environment Management System (EMS) in their Chennai manufacturing

India's enger car and commercial vehicle manufacturing industry is the seventh largest in the world, with an annual production of more than 3.7 million units in 2010.[1] According to recent reports, India is set to overtake Brazil to become the sixth largest enger vehicle producer in the world, growing 16-18 per cent to sell around three million units in the course of 2011-12.[2] In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourth largest exporter of enger cars, behind Japan, South Korea, and Thailand.[3] As of 2010, India is home to 40 million enger vehicles. More than 3.7 million automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making the country the second fastest growing automobile market in the world.[4][5] According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, annual vehicle sales are projected to increase to 5 million by 2015 and more than 9 million by 2020.[6] By 2050, the country is expected to top the world in car volumes with approximately 611 million vehicles on the nation's roads.[7] The majority of India's car manufacturing industry is based around three clusters in the south, west and north. The southern cluster near Chennai is the biggest with 35% of the revenue share. The western hub near Maharashtra is 33% of the market. The northern cluster is primarily Haryana with 32%.[8] Chennai, is also referred to as the "Detroit of India"[9] with the India operations of Ford, Hyundai, Renault and Nissan headquartered in the city and BMW having an assembly plant on the outskirts. Chennai s for 60% of the country's automotive exports.[10] Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana form the northern cluster where the country's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, is based.[11] The Chakan corridor near Pune, Maharashtra is the western cluster with companies like General Motors, Volkswagen, Skoda, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Fiat and Force Motors[12][13] having assembly plants in the area. Aurangabad with Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen also forms part of the western cluster. Another emerging cluster is in the state of Gujarat with manufacturing facility of General Motors in Halol and further planned for Tata Nano at Sanand. Ford, Maruti Suzuki and Peugeot-Citroen plants are also set to come up in Gujarat.[14] Kolkatta with Hindustan Motors, Noida with Honda and Bangalore with Toyota are some of the other automotive manufacturing regions around the country.
