FOREWORD ASME B16.9 is the American S,tandard for steel butt-welding fittingsand although not so stated, it is implied that its scope deals primarily with standard (Schedule40)wall and heavier as it was developedfor carbon steel and those grades of alloy steel piping that are selected for pressure and temperature considerations. In 1949 ASME approved standard B36.19 for Stainless SteelPipe in which Schedule10s was established. Schedule 5s pipe was recognized in the 1952 publication of B36.19. The companion fittings for Schedule 10s pipe used B16.9 shapesand proportions and were standardized by MSS SP43 whichwas firstpublished in 1950. In anticipation,theoriginal 1950 edition of MSS SP43 also standardized Schedule5s fittings. Since 1950 the use of lighter than standard wall stainless steel pipingin new construction has become predominant. The reasonsfor this evolution include the rapid expansionof the process industries in the fields of chemicals, plastics, textiles, paper, etc. Coincident withthe greater utilizationof light wall pipeand of more capable metal forming machinery, the need to reduce pipe assembly fabrication times brought about by worldmarket competition led to the development of belled end socket welding fittings. As with the development ofMSS SP43, the shapes and proportions of B16.9 were reusedfor the belled endfitting bodies to the maximum extent possible. In 1992 first work on belled end fittings for this standard included socket proportions, socket to fitting body transition geometry, fitting thickness,and the ability of U.S. industry to manufacturing. Some of this work only standardized service proven relationships in used belled end fittings madefor the pulp and paper industry without standards for over 20 years. In 1994 the U.S. Navy funded burst and fatigue testing prototype fittings in the first of a two-phase program. The second phase was for an increased thicknessfitting and was neverdone. In1995 mid-waythrough testing, the Navy directedthat these belled end fittings be used on ship systems in new construction followed shortly thereafter by and configuration control of these fittings direction to use themon the repair of ship systems. The quality was done by an interim document,the requirements of which, with some improvements,are contained herein. In keeping with recent trends wherein military procurement activities have been using more commercial material standards and because of recognizedfabrication economies relatedto the use of these fittings, the U S . Navy sponsored the writingof this Standard Practice in cooperation with fitting manufacturers.
This Standard Practice establishes dimensional uniformity for light wall belled end socket welding fitting designs qualified by burst and fatigue testing for both Military Serviceand Commercial Code Practice.

1. SCOPE l. 1 This Standard covers 1 /4 through NPS 12 stainless steel and copper-nickel belled end socketweldingfittings,includingdimensions, tolerances,materials,socketenddetails,heat treating and marking requirements for use with the following pipe standards:

4.1BelledEnd SocketWeldingFittings are a family ofrelatively thinwallwroughtfittings which extend the advantages of socket welded ts through the common sizes of thin walled pipes. In this Standard Practice,"wrought" is used to denote fittings formed from tubular or flat starting materials as opposed to those that are either forged or cast to their final shape or machined from forgingsor castings.

4.2 CUNI is anota;ionrepresentingcopper nickel alloy. 4.3 Electro-Etch is an electrochemical marking process which consistsof an electrical power unit that deliverscurrent to amarkinghead. The marking headis covered witha pad that has been saturated with any oneofseveralelectrolytes formulated for markingvariousmetals, When the marking head touches the fitting, the current and electrolyte flow through a stencil resulting in the replacement of metallic ions with a metal oxide formingan etched mark.
3. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
3.1Tees fabricated bywelding a branch to an outlet extruded from the run are allowable and shall be designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME B31 Codes for Pressure Piping as pipe fabrications. Thermometer well tees shown herein are pipe fabrications with envelopes dimensionallystandardized by this Standard Practice.Refer to Section 12 for Fabrication Alternatives.

7. FITTING DESIGN
5.1 Fittingsshall be one of three classes: MP, MARINE or CR. The classes are specifiedin Table 1 for ready reference.Fittings of Class MP shall be further subdivided into four subclasses, specifically: MP-S, MP-W, MP-WX and MP-WU, each reflecting unique manufacturing processes and inspectionrequirements.Class MARINE shallonlyapply to copper nickel fittings. Class CR shall only apply to stainless steel fittings.
7.1 The designsof MP Class fittingsare qualified simultaneously with the qualifications of manufacturingmethods for eachfitting design and those qualifications shall be by proof test (see Paragraph 8).
8. FITTING DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING METHOD PROOF TESTING
5.2 Class MP orMARINEor CR shall be specified by the purchaser. If the purchaser does not define a MP subclass, any may be supplied by the manufacturer. Class CR fittings shall not be substituted for fittings marked MP, but Class MP may be substituted for Class CR.

6. PRESSURE RATINGS a) Fittings formed from tubular sections are unique from those formed directly from flat material, irrespective of whether such sections are seamless or welded construction.
6.1 The allowable pressure ratings for MP Class fittings designedin accordance with thisStandard Practice shall be 87%% of those calculated for straight seamless pipeof minimum wall thickness and stressvalueinaccordancewiththerules established in the applicable sections of ASME B31,Codes for Pressure Piping. The pipe wall thickness,schedule or class and materialtype shall be that with which the fittings have been ordered to be used; their identity on the fittings is in lieu of pressure rating markings.
b) Fittings formed employing one fabrication weld are uniquefromthoseemployingtwo fabrication welds. c) Fittingsformed from agreater or lessér number of pieces are unique. 8.3 Retesting shall be required for any change in manufacturing method which directly affects the testedcomponentina waywhichcould reasonably be concluded to reduce either pressure containment or fatigue performance. Examples include a localized reduction in fitting thickness or a localized decrease in surface curvature radius.

a hydrostatic test pressure equal to one and oneMSS half times the pressure ratings listed in SP-43 for class CR fittings.
qualifies fitting sizes from one half to twice the NPS size tested. Further, tests performed on 90" long radiuselbowsqualify 45" elbows.Tests performed on a straight tee qualify reducing tees. 10. SIZES
short 10.1 The sizesoffittings,exceptingonly radius elbows and thermometer welltees shall be from NPS 1/4 through NPS 12. Short radius elbowsshall be from NPS 1through NPS 12. Thermometer well tees shall have a body size of no larger than NPS 2.
8.6 Pressure test results shall be kept on file by the fitting manufacturerand shall be made available to the purchaser upon request. 8.7 Preparatory to pressuretesting,straight pieces of pipeshall be weldedon to the endof each fitting and these pieces shall be capped. The pipe pieces shallbenoshorter than twicethepipe outside diameter. The pipe shall be of the same material as the fitting.
10.2 All combinations of reducing tees listed in ASME B16.9 are available from manufacturers, however the followingsizing standard is established in the Tables herein and is encouraged in practice:
8.8 Hydrostatic pressureshallbeapplieduntil the fitting or piperuptures.Thetestpressure prior to rupture shall be at least equal to 105% of the minimum manufacturing proof test pressure defined as follows:
a) For reducing run tees: Use a standard tee with street reducer. b) For reducing branch tees in sizes NPS 2 and smaller: Use straight size teesand a street reducer.

11.1 Stainless steel fittings shall be made from tubular or flat starting material, or a combination of both, the chemical compositionand mechanical properties of which conform to ASTM A 240, ASTM A 312, or ASTM A 358.
9. PRODUCTION TESTING
11.2 Copper nickel fittings shall be made from tubular or flat starting material, or a combination of both. Tubular starting material shall conform to the chemicalcomposition and mechanical properties of Military Specification MIL-T-16420, or ASTM Designation B 466 or B 467. Sheet starting material shall conform to MIL-C-15726 or ASTM Designation B 122.
9,l Hydrostatic testing of fittings is not required in this standard; however, each fitting of either class MP or MARINEshall be capable of withstanding without failure, leakage or impairment of serviceability,atestpressureequal to that prescribed for thespecifiedmatchingpipeof equivalent materialand minimum wall thickness. entire length in accordance with Appendix 12 of Section VIII, Division I of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
12.1 FabricationsfromFittings:Stainlesssteel fittingsmaybefabricated fromASME B16.9 fittings wroughtto class WP or from MSSSP43 fittings wrought to CR requirements per ASTM A 403 on to which tangent ends have been butt welded. The tangent ends may be either street or bell and belling may be done either before or after attachment.
d) Whenrequired(see Table l), welds shall be liquid dye-penetrant inspected in accordance with S9074-AR-GIB4lo/ 278. 13.3Weld Repair: Weld repair is permitted only to longitudinal welds ing half shells or circumferential welds ing tangentsto fittings. Repaired fittingsshall be reexamined andre-heat treated. No other repairs by weldingare permitted,
12.2BranchFabrications:Thermometerwell tees and other teesutilizing extruded branch connections shall be fabricated in accordance with ASME B3 1 Code requirementsfor extruded outlets. The nominal pipe size of the bodies of thermometer wellteefittingsshall not exceed NPS 2.
14. TOLERANCES AND DIMENSIONS 14.1 Tolerances are specified in Table 2. 14.2Dimensions for sockets and fittings are specified in Tables 3 through 13.
13. WELD DESIGN, INSPECTIONS AND REPAIR
14.3 Distancesshown in the fitting sketches from the center of fittings to a pipe piece are pipe fabrication assembly design dimensions, thus are not assigned fitting manufacturing tolerances.

Permanent backing straps shall not be used. Inspections 15. SOCKET AND COUPLING END FACES
a) Fitting weldinspectionrequirements and starting material weld inspection requirements are specified in Table l.
15.1 The socketend and couplingendfaces shall be flat and perpendicular to the socket and coupling axes. The end face serves as a guide for pipe t fillet weld thickness.
b) When required (see Table l), welds shall be radiographically examinedthroughout their entirelength in accordancewith Paragraph UW-51of Section VIII, Division I of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
15.2 The socket end face shall be of a thickness no less than the minimum wall thickness specified in Table 2. The coupling end face shall be of a thickness no less than 1.09 times the minimum wall thickness specified in Table 2.
c) Whenrequired(see Table l), welds shall be ultrasonicallyexamined throughout their

18.1Each fittingshall be heattreated after completion of all weldingor fitting body forming operations except that the forming of socket ends of fittings may be performed either prior to or after final heat treatment. 18.2 All stainless steel fittings shall be furnished heat-treated except as allowed in 18.1. The heattreat procedure,except for thosegradeslisted below,shallconsist of solutionannealing the fittings minimum a temperature of 1900°F (1040°C)until the chromiumcarbidesgo into solution, and then cooling at a sufficient rate to prevent re-precipitation. Grades321H, 347H and at 1925°F 348Hshallbesolutionannealed (1050°C)minimum.S31254shallbesolution annealed at 2100°F (1150°C) minimum. S33228 shall be solution annealed at 2050°F (1120°C) minimum. S34565 shall be solution annealed in the range 2050" F (1 120"C) to 2140" F (1 170"C). The maximum temperature for solution annealing grades 321,32lH, 347 and 347H shall be 2100°F (1150°C).

18. HEAT TREATMENT
15.3 The choiceof materials and/ orthe forming process may produce a heavy end face thickness. The maximum thickness at the welding face shall not exceed 1.5 timesthe thickness values specified in Table 2. A chamfer not exceeding 15 degrees from the fitting axis is permitted on the outside diameter to achieve thickness requirements.

16.1 Optimum fitting to pipe t fatigue performance is attained when the height of the t fillet is equal to the fitting socket face thickness ( A ) and extends 1.75 times that distance along the length of the pipe as shown in Figure 1. The slope of the weld face when measured from the pipe surface should be approximately 30 degrees.
18.3All copper nickelfittingsshallbe heat treated except as allowed in 18. I . Heat treating shall be performed at 1300 +/ - 50°F for one hour at temperature per inchof thickness.
17. FINISH 17.1 Fittings supplied under this Standard Practice shall be examined visually. Surface dis19. continuities shall be explored for depth. Surface discontinuities deeper than 5% of the minimum wall thicknessor surface checks (fish scale) deeper than, I / 6 4 irich (0.4 mm) or mechanical marks deeper than 1/ 16 inch (1.6mm) shall be removed by machining or grinding to sound metaland the repairedareasshall be yell faired.Whenthe removal of a surface discontinuity reduces the wall thickness below the minimum wall limits, the fitting shall be rejected.
MARKING 19.1 All fittingsshall be permanentlymarked by electro-etch, controlleddot peen or engraving pencil. The electrolyte shall not contain harmful amounts of chlorides,metals or metallicsalts, such as zinc or copper, that would cause corrosive attack on heating. No metal impression stamps shall be used. 19.2 All fittings shall be marked with the prescribed information inaccordancewith MSS SP-25.

FOREWORD ASME B16.9 is the American S,tandard for steel butt-welding fittingsand although not so stated, it is implied that its scope deals primarily with standard (Schedule40)wall and heavier as it was developedfor carbon steel and those grades of alloy steel piping that are selected for pressure and temperature considerations. In 1949 ASME approved standard B36.19 for Stainless SteelPipe in which Schedule10s was established. Schedule 5s pipe was recognized in the 1952 publication of B36.19. The companion fittings for Schedule 10s pipe used B16.9 shapesand proportions and were standardized by MSS SP43 whichwas firstpublished in 1950. In anticipation,theoriginal 1950 edition of MSS SP43 also standardized Schedule5s fittings. Since 1950 the use of lighter than standard wall stainless steel pipingin new construction has become predominant. The reasonsfor this evolution include the rapid expansionof the process industries in the fields of chemicals, plastics, textiles, paper, etc. Coincident withthe greater utilizationof light wall pipeand of more capable metal forming machinery, the need to reduce pipe assembly fabrication times brought about by worldmarket competition led to the development of belled end socket welding fittings. As with the development ofMSS SP43, the shapes and proportions of B16.9 were reusedfor the belled endfitting bodies to the maximum extent possible. In 1992 first work on belled end fittings for this standard included socket proportions, socket to fitting body transition geometry, fitting thickness,and the ability of U.S. industry to manufacturing. Some of this work only standardized service proven relationships in used belled end fittings madefor the pulp and paper industry without standards for over 20 years. In 1994 the U.S. Navy funded burst and fatigue testing prototype fittings in the first of a two-phase program. The second phase was for an increased thicknessfitting and was neverdone. In1995 mid-waythrough testing, the Navy directedthat these belled end fittings be used on ship systems in new construction followed shortly thereafter by and configuration control of these fittings direction to use themon the repair of ship systems. The quality was done by an interim document,the requirements of which, with some improvements,are contained herein. In keeping with recent trends wherein military procurement activities have been using more commercial material standards and because of recognizedfabrication economies relatedto the use of these fittings, the U S . Navy sponsored the writingof this Standard Practice in cooperation with fitting manufacturers.
This Standard Practice establishes dimensional uniformity for light wall belled end socket welding fitting designs qualified by burst and fatigue testing for both Military Serviceand Commercial Code Practice.

4.1BelledEnd SocketWeldingFittings are a family ofrelatively thinwallwroughtfittings which extend the advantages of socket welded ts through the common sizes of thin walled pipes. In this Standard Practice,"wrought" is used to denote fittings formed from tubular or flat starting materials as opposed to those that are either forged or cast to their final shape or machined from forgingsor castings.

4.2 CUNI is anota;ionrepresentingcopper nickel alloy. 4.3 Electro-Etch is an electrochemical marking process which consistsof an electrical power unit that deliverscurrent to amarkinghead. The marking headis covered witha pad that has been saturated with any oneofseveralelectrolytes formulated for markingvariousmetals, When the marking head touches the fitting, the current and electrolyte flow through a stencil resulting in the replacement of metallic ions with a metal oxide formingan etched mark.
3. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
3.1Tees fabricated bywelding a branch to an outlet extruded from the run are allowable and shall be designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME B31 Codes for Pressure Piping as pipe fabrications. Thermometer well tees shown herein are pipe fabrications with envelopes dimensionallystandardized by this Standard Practice.Refer to Section 12 for Fabrication Alternatives.
4.4 Controlled Dot Peen isa mechanical process using a carbide stylusto create a controlleddepth dot matrix impression in the metal being marked.

7. FITTING DESIGN
5.1 Fittingsshall be one of three classes: MP, MARINE or CR. The classes are specifiedin Table 1 for ready reference.Fittings of Class MP shall be further subdivided into four subclasses, specifically: MP-S, MP-W, MP-WX and MP-WU, each reflecting unique manufacturing processes and inspectionrequirements.Class MARINE shallonlyapply to copper nickel fittings. Class CR shall only apply to stainless steel fittings.
7.1 The designsof MP Class fittingsare qualified simultaneously with the qualifications of manufacturingmethods for eachfitting design and those qualifications shall be by proof test (see Paragraph 8).
8. FITTING DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING METHOD PROOF TESTING
5.2 Class MP orMARINEor CR shall be specified by the purchaser. If the purchaser does not define a MP subclass, any may be supplied by the manufacturer. Class CR fittings shall not be substituted for fittings marked MP, but Class MP may be substituted for Class CR.

6. PRESSURE RATINGS a) Fittings formed from tubular sections are unique from those formed directly from flat material, irrespective of whether such sections are seamless or welded construction.
6.1 The allowable pressure ratings for MP Class fittings designedin accordance with thisStandard Practice shall be 87%% of those calculated for straight seamless pipeof minimum wall thickness and stressvalueinaccordancewiththerules established in the applicable sections of ASME B31,Codes for Pressure Piping. The pipe wall thickness,schedule or class and materialtype shall be that with which the fittings have been ordered to be used; their identity on the fittings is in lieu of pressure rating markings.
b) Fittings formed employing one fabrication weld are uniquefromthoseemployingtwo fabrication welds. c) Fittingsformed from agreater or lessér number of pieces are unique. 8.3 Retesting shall be required for any change in manufacturing method which directly affects the testedcomponentina waywhichcould reasonably be concluded to reduce either pressure containment or fatigue performance. Examples include a localized reduction in fitting thickness or a localized decrease in surface curvature radius.

10. SIZES
short 10.1 The sizesoffittings,exceptingonly radius elbows and thermometer welltees shall be from NPS 1/4 through NPS 12. Short radius elbowsshall be from NPS 1through NPS 12. Thermometer well tees shall have a body size of no larger than NPS 2.
8.6 Pressure test results shall be kept on file by the fitting manufacturerand shall be made available to the purchaser upon request. 8.7 Preparatory to pressuretesting,straight pieces of pipeshall be weldedon to the endof each fitting and these pieces shall be capped. The pipe pieces shallbenoshorter than twicethepipe outside diameter. The pipe shall be of the same material as the fitting.
10.2 All combinations of reducing tees listed in ASME B16.9 are available from manufacturers, however the followingsizing standard is established in the Tables herein and is encouraged in practice:

11.1 Stainless steel fittings shall be made from tubular or flat starting material, or a combination of both, the chemical compositionand mechanical properties of which conform to ASTM A 240, ASTM A 312, or ASTM A 358.
9. PRODUCTION TESTING
11.2 Copper nickel fittings shall be made from tubular or flat starting material, or a combination of both. Tubular starting material shall conform to the chemicalcomposition and mechanical properties of Military Specification MIL-T-16420, or ASTM Designation B 466 or B 467. Sheet starting material shall conform to MIL-C-15726 or ASTM Designation B 122.

12.1 FabricationsfromFittings:Stainlesssteel fittingsmaybefabricated fromASME B16.9 fittings wroughtto class WP or from MSSSP43 fittings wrought to CR requirements per ASTM A 403 on to which tangent ends have been butt welded. The tangent ends may be either street or bell and belling may be done either before or after attachment.
d) Whenrequired(see Table l), welds shall be liquid dye-penetrant inspected in accordance with S9074-AR-GIB4lo/ 278. 13.3Weld Repair: Weld repair is permitted only to longitudinal welds ing half shells or circumferential welds ing tangentsto fittings. 12.2BranchFabrications:Thermometerwell tees and other teesutilizing extruded branch connections shall be fabricated in accordance with ASME B3 1 Code requirementsfor extruded outlets. The nominal pipe size of the bodies of thermometer wellteefittingsshall not exceed NPS 2.

Inspections 15. SOCKET AND COUPLING END FACES
a) Fitting weldinspectionrequirements and starting material weld inspection requirements are specified in Table l.
15.1 The socketend and couplingendfaces shall be flat and perpendicular to the socket and coupling axes. The end face serves as a guide for pipe t fillet weld thickness.
b) When required (see Table l), welds shall be radiographically examinedthroughout their entirelength in accordancewith Paragraph UW-51of Section VIII, Division I of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
15.2 The socket end face shall be of a thickness no less than the minimum wall thickness specified in Table 2. The coupling end face shall be of a thickness no less than 1.09 times the minimum wall thickness specified in Table 2.

18.1Each fittingshall be heattreated after completion of all weldingor fitting body forming operations except that the forming of socket ends of fittings may be performed either prior to or after final heat treatment. 18.2 All stainless steel fittings shall be furnished heat-treated except as allowed in 18.1. The heattreat procedure,except for thosegradeslisted below,shallconsist of solutionannealing the fittings minimum a temperature of 1900°F (1040°C)until the chromiumcarbidesgo into solution, and then cooling at a sufficient rate to prevent re-precipitation. Grades321H, 347H and at 1925°F 348Hshallbesolutionannealed (1050°C)minimum.S31254shallbesolution annealed at 2100°F (1150°C) minimum. S33228 shall be solution annealed at 2050°F (1120°C) minimum. S34565 shall be solution annealed in the range 2050" F (1 120"C) to 2140" F (1 170"C). The maximum temperature for solution annealing grades 321,32lH, 347 and 347H shall be 2100°F (1150°C).

18. HEAT TREATMENT
15.3 The choiceof materials and/ orthe forming process may produce a heavy end face thickness. The maximum thickness at the welding face shall not exceed 1.5 timesthe thickness values specified in Table 2. A chamfer not exceeding 15 degrees from the fitting axis is permitted on the outside diameter to achieve thickness requirements.

16.1 Optimum fitting to pipe t fatigue performance is attained when the height of the t fillet is equal to the fitting socket face thickness ( A ) and extends 1.75 times that distance along the length of the pipe as shown in Figure 1. The slope of the weld face when measured from the pipe surface should be approximately 30 degrees.
