Dining at TCU is like a big family table – there’s room for everyone and a huge variety of offerings from build-your-own-burgers to rolled sushi. Market Square is the “all-you-care-to-eat” main dining hall in the University Union where you don’t have to avoid pricier, healthy fare - it’s all covered for one low price. Because cravings can hit any place and anytime, we offer several campus locations including a 24-hour bistro in the Mary Couts Burnett Library to fuel late-night study sessions. Transfer Students: Students entering TCU as a Transfer student who have been out of high school for less than two years will be required to live on-campus, as space is available. TCU Housing & Residence Life will waive the residency requirement for Transfer students after August 1 if beds are not available. Therefore, campus housing cannot be guaranteed to any TCU Transfer student.

Meningitis Vaccination The State of Texas recently ed Senate Bill 1107, which requires all incoming college and university students under the age of 30 receive the bacterial meningitis vaccine. In addition to the current requirement that all new TCU students planning to live on campus must be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, beginning in spring 2012, all incoming students under 30 must also be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. Students who will live in campus housing must provide their vaccination records before accessing the Housing Application. In order to enroll in classes, all new students must provide proof of a current vaccination against bacterial meningitis to the TCU Health Center before attending Orientation. A current vaccination is defined as having received the vaccination within the past five years and no later than 10 days before the first day of the semester. Instructions on how to provide your vaccination documents may be found at www.healthcenter.tcu.edu. For additional information, please visit www.housing.tcu.edu.

Move In Dates Moving into your residence hall will be a great experience as TCU will have plenty of volunteers to assist you on scheduled move-in days. If you are unable to move in during the scheduled days, you are welcome to check in anytime from August 15-19, 2012. Classes begin Monday, August 20, 2012. Reserve Your Place!

The relationships you build with your roommates and neighbors while living in the residence halls are the core of university housing, and at Texas Christian University the Department of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) provides the space where you will live, learn and grow. You will find HRL staff who live in your residence hall – Resident Assistants (RAs) and Hall Directors (HDs) –available to help you develop relationships with your roommate(s) and neighbors.

Reserve your spot in TCU’s housing community by submitting your $400 non-refundable Housing Deposit or an approved Housing Deposit Waiver. While paying online is the preferred method, other payment options are provided on the Reserving Your Place at TCU page in your ission packet.

As a freshman at TCU you will have the opportunity to live with a roommate as most of our rooms for freshmen are double occupancy rooms. However, some freshmen will be assigned to triple occupancy rooms as well. Living with a new person or persons and becoming a part of a residential community can provide you with many important life skills, in addition to a strong network of students to you in your academic journey. The residence hall floor or wing you live on is part of a larger community – a residence hall community and a campus community. Events and activities are provided in every hall to help bring different communities together and to build a sense of belonging and pride in the larger community. You will be encouraged by your RAs to get involved in your community and you will find that there is always something fun going on! Throughout all of this experience something else happens in university housing: Students grow and develop as of a community. You will learn responsibility, learn to solve problems, and learn leadership skills. Some student-learning just happens, but much of it happens because of the intentional design of the university residence halls and the intentional plans for your student housing experience.

Express Yourself In May, you’ll receive an email from Housing & Residence Life directing you to my.tcu.edu where you’ll submit your Housing Application. This will give you the opportunity to submit your survey responses, hall preferences, roommate request and dining plan. You may make changes to your Housing Application online until 5:00pm (CST) on June 15. All roommate requests must be mutual and submitted via the online Housing Application before the above deadline. Housing assignments for freshmen are randomly generated. You will be notified via TCU email once your assignment is ready to view on my.tcu.edu. Assignments are posted on an on-going basis beginning in mid-July and throughout the remainder of the summer.

As you take your place in the Horned Frog community, we’ll help make your TCU experience meaningful right from the start. Your First Year Experience includes programs like Orientation, Frog Camp, Connections, the Common Reading, Need 2 Know and the Chancellor’s Assembly – all designed to help you find your place at TCU, in the community, and in the world. It’s time to start making your mark!

Welcome Your first few days on campus will be packed with activities! Housing assignments and move-in information will be available to you during the summer, but mark your calendars now for the first activities that you are expected to attend. All first-year students are required to be on campus by Thursday, August 16 so they can participate in the Common Reading, Need 2 Know, Class of 2016 programs and the Chancellor’s Assembly. Fall semester classes begin on Monday, August 20. Read the following information carefully to learn more about your First Year Experience. CLASS OF 2016 PROGRAMS & frogs first Activities will welcome you to campus and help you get involved with your new friends and interests. COMMON READING FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 Before classes start, you’ll get the chance to spend time with one of TCU’s best faculty discussing this year’s reading, which will be sent to you over the summer. NEED 2 KNOW (N2K) SATURDAY, AUGUST 18 College is about making choices – choices that have both positive and negative consequences. In this interactive session you will learn about campus resources that will help you make responsible decisions about alcohol and other drugs, sexual relationships, and personal safety. N2K is mandatory for all first-year students. CHANCELLOR’S ASSEMBLY SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Jr. for your official welcome to TCU and to the Class of 2016. Faculty and TCU s will begin the academic year at this inspirational candlelight ceremony, which is one of TCU’s most important traditions. The Chancellor’s Assembly is mandatory for all first-year students.

Orientation

Required for students. Encouraged for parents. The “U” in TCU stands for University, and the foundation of your TCU experience will be your classroom interaction with faculty and students – Orientation gets that started. During your two days on campus you will: • Build the foundation of your academic life • Live in a first-year residence hall • Receive your Resource Guide to TCU • Learn the nuts and bolts of academic programs • Be guided by upper class Orientation Student Assistants • Receive academic advising • Enroll for your fall semester classes • Learn college tips from our best faculty • Meet other new students and outstanding upper class student mentors • Begin your journey as a Horned Frog! Every new first-year student is required to attend Orientation. It’s the only way you can for classes and learn the basics of academic life at TCU. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to attend Orientation with their students – the program is most beneficial when students and parents attend together. Some activities are for students only, some for parents only, and some are for both. (Other family are welcome to attend, but please note that no activities will be planned specifically for them, and many activities will be too long or inappropriate for small children to attend.) Transfer students It is strongly encouraged that transfer students attend an Orientation session. You have two choices of sessions: a one-day session focused on gathering TCU-specific information and resources, or a two-day session focused on preparing for the advising and registration process. The one-day sessions are only for transfer students and are designed to help you gather necessary information to help you successfully transition into the TCU learning community. The two-day sessions are intended for the traditional first-year students, but will give you an in depth understanding of the TCU Core Curriculum as well as the necessary information and resources for a successful start at TCU. Sorority Recruitment It is strongly encouraged that all first-year women participating in Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment attend a June Orientation session. If you cannot attend a session in June, you may for Orientation 9 but may not participate in Orientation 10. Please note that those students who have a conflict between Orientation and Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment will not be able to fully participate in the first day of recruitment, but will instead have a condensed schedule. In addition, they will attend a 12 First Year Experience

specially scheduled, abbreviated Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment Orientation meeting. Planning your summer! TCU offers 8 two-day Orientation sessions in June and 2 two-day sessions in August. If at all possible, please try to attend a June session as space in August is extremely limited and is reserved for students who live a considerable distance from TCU. Students who live in Texas must attend a session in June. Travel plans and Schedule: •

Check-in is at 11:30 a.m. on the first day and the program officially concludes at 5:00 p.m. on the second day. The final activity of Orientation is Advising and Class Registration. Please do not make travel plans that require you to leave campus prior to 5:00 p.m. on the second day. We are unable to accommodate alternative schedules for advising and registration. Honors College students: If you have been accepted into the Honors College, you will check in for Orientation at 10:30 a.m. for an early session that both students and parents are welcome to attend. You will be busy from the moment you arrive until the program ends, so please do not make any other plans during the session.

JUNE SESSIONS All students, including those from the Fort Worth/Dallas area, are required to stay on campus. If you attend in June you’ll stay in a typical residence hall for new students. There are a limited number of rooms for parents attending in June. Parents must make housing reservations, and the cost is $30 per parent. Parents and students will stay in separate rooms, and parents traveling alone will be assigned a roommate. We are only able to provide housing during the one night of your Orientation session. Housing will not be available the evening prior or following your session. If you are attending Frog Camp immediately before or after a June Orientation session, special arrangements can be made to house you on the night in between. AUGUST SESSIONS If you attend in August, you’ll check in to your permanent room assignment when you arrive for Orientation and Frog Camp. (We’ll send you more information in early August.) Students not living on campus this fall, and all parents, must make off-campus housing arrangements. There are no rooms on campus for parents attending August Orientation sessions. Frog Camp Encouraged for students

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime retreat program that introduces you to the TCU community. You can choose between several amazing off-campus environments where you’ll make new friends in a small group of new students and get up close and personal with some of TCU’s best upper-class students and faculty . You’ll learn TCU traditions, discuss key topics, and learn what it takes to be a Horned Frog. While it’s optional, we highly recommend going – and most of the first-year class does. Whatever you do this summer, make sure Frog Camp is a part of it! We offer a wide range of Frog Camps in June, July, and August geared to fit your schedule and interests. You can raft down Colorado’s Taylor River during Alpine, network with movers and shakers during DC, or learn to flamenco during Spain. Seek victory against other groups during the Summit Championship and Grimy Games at Challenge. Build a house with Habitat for Humanity during Quest or explore your new home in Fort Worth during Casa Nueva. You’ll walk away from your Frog Camp experience with new relationships, friendships with faculty, staff, and upper-class mentors, an inside look at what it means to be a Horned Frog, and the ability to make a difference at TCU. We can’t promise you’ll sleep a lot while you’re at camp, but we can promise an unforgettable experience. Read the descriptions of the camps, think about what you like to do, then pick the camp that fits your schedule and interest. Frog Camp Alpine Start your TCU journey at 10,000 feet by coming to Alpine. At this five-day camp high in the Colorado Rockies you’ll have the chance to rock climb, white water raft, hike, tackle the high ropes course, and experience the unique wood-burning hot tub and sweat lodge. During Alpine you’ll sleep in beautiful, rustic cabins, eat terrific food, and make great new friends in a setting that will literally take your breath away. Frog Camp Casa Nueva Casa Nueva (which means “new home” in Spanish) will introduce you to everything we love about living in Fort Worth. During this three-day camp you will stay with your new friends at a hotel conference center and explore the cultural and historic high points of Fort Worth, “where the West begins!” Each session of Casa is different, but you might get to visit Sundance Square, the Fort Worth Zoo, learn how to line dance in the Stockyards, play a life-size game of Clue and eat in favorite Fort Worth restaurants like Joe T. Garcia’s and Riscky’s BBQ.

Frog Camp DC Come with us to Washington, D.C. and discover firsthand why TCU students consider themselves to be leaders in the national and international community. During this leadership-focused camp you’ll visit sites from Arlington National Cemetery to the National Mall, spend time with some of TCU’s top upperclassmen, faculty, and staff, and network with TCU alumni who are leading in DC and around the world. Frog Camp Quest Combine an incredible Frog Camp experience with the chance to make a difference in the community and you’ll figure out why Quest is a popular camp option. Campers at Quest work together on a community service project that might include building a Habitat for Humanity home, remodeling houses at a foster home, or working on an international medical relief project. Quest is a powerful three-day experience that is hard to forget. Frog Camp Spain Seville is one of TCU’s most popular study abroad destinations, and this nine-day camp makes it easy to see why. During Frog Camp Spain, exclusively for Honors College students, you will explore Seville with Honors College faculty and learn about this great city’s history, culture, and food. Encouraged for all students The transition to college can be tough. We’ll help prepare you during the summer with Orientation and Frog Camp, and we won’t leave you hanging once the first semester starts. Connections is a small-group centered leadership program for first-year students. Connections is an opportunity for incoming students to gain valuable insights into what it means to begin “thinking and acting like an ethical leader and responsible citizen in the global community.” Connections challenges students to wrestle with personal identity and self-awareness, investing in and helping shape a thriving campus community, and learning about the ways in which our personal and communal lives are connected to the larger story of the global community. In addition, you’ll make great friends and begin finding your place in the TCU community. Each first-year student who s is placed in a Connections group with 18-20 peers. Each group is facilitated by two upperclass students who serve as mentors, as well as a faculty/staff mentor. Over the course of six weeks, we’ll focus on the following topics: • Discovering and uncovering your personal strengths • Discovering what it means to bring those strengths to the campus community • Exploring the meaning, importance, and responsibility of living in community with others • Discussing principles of community-building • Making connections between the individual, the community, and global society • Exploring the importance of global citizenship Don’t miss this opportunity to get some great leadership development, participate in important conversations, and connect with other students, campus leaders, and staff/faculty at TCU. There’s one simple way to reserve your place How to Orientation and Frog Camp registration is available starting January 19, 2012. You must pay your $500 tuition deposit before ing for these programs. Make your reservations for Orientation and Frog Camp via our website, www.sds.tcu.edu. There are ten Orientation sessions this summer – and each is limited to 185 students. Places in each session are available on a first come, first served basis. So pay that tuition deposit and .

The University subsidizes the cost for all Frog Camps, but you are responsible for picking up some of the costs. The fee for each camp is listed below and includes program fees, lodging, meals, activities, a Frog Camp t-shirt and water bottle. A number of need-based scholarships are available, and you may receive an application on our website www.frogcamp.tcu.edu or by calling our office at 817-257-7855. All fees will be charged to your TCU Student during the summer.
