Questions 1 to 5

1. These questions test your knowledge of grammar at sentence level. 2. You are given five sentences with one blank in each sentence. 3. This is followed by four answer options for each sentence.

Strategy for Answering Questions 1 to 5

STEP 1 •Read the instructions given. •You are required to choose the best answer from the four answer options.

STEP 2 •Read the sentence given. •Now, look at the answer options. •Determine which grammar item that you are tested on.

STEP 3 •Look for clues in the sentences before choosing the answer. •Choose the option that fits the blank. •Read the sentence together with the answer to see if the option fits.

STEP 2 • Now, read the answer options given. • Try to determine its context or the message. Is it a question, statement or dialogue? • Once you understand the context, you will be able to determine if the sentences are punctuated correctly.

• A question requires a question mark at the end of the sentence whereas a statement requires a full stop. If it is a direct speech, are the inverted commas placed correctly? Make sure proper nouns begin with capital letters.

STEP 1 • Read the instructions given. • You are required to write a suitable response for each picture.

STEP 2 • Study the situation in the picture. • See what the characters are doing. • Understand what the characters are saying.

STEP 3 • Be smart. Use your common sense to give a response. • Make sure your response is logical and meaningful.

Questions 22 to 25 1. These questions test your understanding of linear and non-linear texts. 2. Linear texts include ages, stories, articles, speeches, dialogues and letters. 3. Examples of non-linear texts are ments, notices, flyers, pamphlets, charts, etc.
