Learning Of A New Case
Joe and I learned of an innocent black man killed, In the hands of police officers on the street. It was a quiet night like any other night in this city, Kenny was driving and pulled over to check something. When he began driving on the road again, He was soon pulled over by cops a few blocks down. Another police car was driving along the street and stopped, To assist two partnered officers that had originally pulled Kenny over. The officers began asking questions of who he was, And where exactly was he going at that time of the night. From what Joe and I were told, Kenny got agitated, Got out of the car and confronted the officers who pulled him over. He started finger pointing at the police officers, Cursing at them and telling them he doesn’t fear them. That’s when things got out of hand and a fight ensued, Kenny retreated back to his car to try and leave. The police officers feared he had a weapon and began shooting,
Before you know it, he was dead in a pool of blood on the concrete. With gunsmoke infiltrating the muggy air of the night, Another unarmed man was killed without thought process. Joe and I looked at each other and knew something wasn’t right, Most of the story doesn’t make sense to us honestly. The city was begging and pleading for some outside forces to come investigate, That the police department didn’t do their due diligence in looking into these officers. All we knew are the officers are on paid leave, That their guns were handed in to evidence for review. Joe and I watched the news broadcasts of what was going on in the city, That there was civil unrest, anger and plenty of madness occurring. Most of what we know are based on what’s reported on the news, We knew good and well that we can’t trust anything the news says. They were reporting that they found a gun at the scene, That the police officers feared for their lives and that’s why they shot and killed Kenny. What I’ve always learned with stories is there are three sides, With this situation it was Kenny’s (which he can’t tell), the police, and the truth. We needed to know the truth and from what family are saying, None of it makes sense and that Kenny was a cool, calm, collected man. It took a lot to agitate him and that this was not the first time he was pulled over,
That he’s grown accustomed to police officers pulling him over and them trying to anger him. His cousin told us that there were times that he was in the car with Kenny, When police officers pulled him over he got tired of it and filed a harassment report on the police department. After that listening to broken hearts and minds on the phone, We collectively decided to take on the case and investigate this. I start to reflect back on my time with the police department, Thinking about the time my coworkers shot and killed the wrong man in a store robbery. It makes me think of the last moments of a man’s life as he takes his last breath, How horrific it must be to die on a street in your own neighborhood. We knew that we had to look into this case and gather all of the necessary information, So we can at least tell Kenny’s side of the story and our goal was to find out the truth in all of this. Hopefully we are right in finding out what really happened, That our minds and guts were telling us, this is far from the truth. Joe and I were on the next flight out to the city where the shooting occurred, Oh the emotions and feelings I’m going through right now.
Emotions and Feelings
Upon arriving into a different city for new case, I can’t help but to think of Gary, Jr. right now. I can’t imagine one of my own pulling him over, Feeling threatened by the color of his skin that he kills him. The city was a war zone with military officials everywhere, Tanks infiltrated the streets in a cloud of smoke and uncertainty. The smoke that filled the air were from nights of gas bombs, Being thrown toward people to calm the anger of what they’re feeling. Even as a former police officer of the law I pray for my own child, That he never has to deal with what I’ve seen and experienced myself. My badge used to save me in so many instances and situations, That won’t save any of these black and latino men who are killed at the hands of officers. There was an unsettling feeling as Joe and I rode in the cab to the hotel, My gut didn’t feel right as if something else is going to happen and turn the city upside down. As we exited the highway, we were driving along the main streets, To see stores burned down and know that business owners have nowhere to turn for income.
It saddened me and made me realize that the looting never solved any problems, It only set the city back millions and put business owners in a bad place financially, emotionally and mentally. I looked at the picture of this young man in my phone, And pondered how the hell this shit continues to happen. When we got to the hotel to get settled in, People stared at us wondering who the hell we were. They were question what the hell are we doing in this city of turmoil, Why are we in their neck of the woods as they watch our every move? This is definitely going to be a marathon with this case, Let me go call my son and tell him I love him....
Calling Gary, Jr.
When I got settled into the hotel, I dropped Gary, Jr. a text, To see if he had time to talk on the phone for a few minutes. He called me right away and never answered my text, It was so good to hear his voice as it’s getting deeper with age. He sounds so much like me at his age, it makes me laugh, We caught up for a little while and just talked about life. He asked me for advice about a girl he likes at school, I told him to not get too caught up and that mom won’t approve. He knew that and laughed at the thought of mom finding out, He knew how to be quiet about his movements so that was good and bad. He asked me what was the outcome of the last case, I told him we solved it, the officers were arrested, one helped us and got a deal out of it. I told him I’m in another city investigating the killing of a black man, By the hands of police officers a few nights ago. He already knew which case it was as he saw it posted on the internet, He made me laugh because he told me Joe and I had our work cut out for ourselves.
It’s been a long day of traveling and I’m tired but it was time to say our goodbyes, I told my son, I loved him and to be careful out there in this crazy world. To take care of mom and protect her as he’s the man of the house, To always make sure that he follows what I told him about life, morals and values. He told me he loved me and to be careful while investigating this case, That he’s happy and proud of me and my career change. As I hung up the phone, I finally realized I have someone in my corner, That fully understands why I do this work, it felt good to know that...
Meeting Kenny's Family
To meet such an amazing, gracious family, it made me emote more, As Kenny’s family reminded me of mine, close knit and loving. Shaking hands and giving hugs was something never done on private investigations, Kenny’s family were appreciative and thankful that Joe and I decided to look into their case. Kenny’s mother told us that he was a good man to everyone, That his younger years of running the streets changed when he lost friends to gun violence. She told us that granted he knew some guys in the wrong crowd, They all grew up together within the confines of these neighborhoods and streets. She said that Kenny was working in construction building homes, That he was a stand up guy and he bought himself a nice car to reward his hard work. She warned of him buying a nice car and the trouble it can cause, It wasn’t necessarily his friends she was worried about, but the police. Kenny’s cousin told us of the few times police pulled him over, And was questioned about who he is and where he was going. There were a few times where it would be the same police officers,
That they tried to agitate Kenny to have a reason to arrest them. Kenny’s cousin said that he would never jump out of his car, Risk his life to get in a cop’s face and that he had filed a complaint to the city about the police officer’s conduct toward him. He feels that this could’ve been a retaliatory ordeal between the police and Kenny, That it’s possible this could have been a vendetta against Kenny but nothing is out of bounds at this point. Kenny’s sister would share so many great stories of their childhoods, That he was her protector when it came to anything in life. She ired him for how he turned his life around and changed for the better, That he worked his ass off to be able to buy the nice car he had. She said he was making good money doing what he loved, Which was providing homes for people that they would eventually live in. He was good with his hands, it came natural to him, it was easy, He took the time to teach others and he loved helping people. Kenny knowing a few bad apples didn’t personify him and his life, That he was fighting to get the guys in the neighborhood to change their ways. Seeing the nice car Kenny was inspiring to the young men, They saw Kenny was living his life right and doing things to change their mindsets. Kenny was trying to give these young men opportunities, That’s what he was about, he just was tired of dealing with the police officers
harassing him daily. The family wanted nothing to do with the news until their press conference, Where they can speak their piece without getting anything misinterpreted. It was bad enough the news wasn’t reporting the whole story, The family knew Kenny had no gun and wasn’t retreating to get one. Everyone was saying that the gun was planted for sure, All to justify killing a young black man in America, once again. They told us that Kenny never allowed any of his friends to carry guns in his car, So the news reported he had a gun, his family knew that was far from the truth. We began to learn of who Kenny really was as a person and a man, His mother told us that sometimes he would go for late night drives to clear his mind. It was a calming factor for him and he would use that time to reflect on life, He struggled with losing his father a few years ago to cancer. He had a great bond and relationship with his father and everyone in the family, To think that Kenny was taking time out for himself to soothe his mind and ends up dying boggles my mind. The family said they don’t want this to turn into a violent ordeal of rioting and looting, That they just want to get answers and the truth on what exactly happened that night. They told us they can’t watch the news and the loopholes in what they’re reporting,
What Joe and I definitely knew, this was a city in turmoil....
Riots, Looting, and Fires
When Joe and I decided to go see the aftermath of this city, It was not surprising as we’ve dealt with this in our careers before. We had already rented a car so we can get around easier, It will make investigating this case better for us instead of cabs like we did in Europe. We were prepared for a lot of it mentally but not necessarily emotionally, Then again who can honestly prepare for something like this emotionally? This hit home for us, as I mentioned, we both have sons, So in our minds going into this, it’s questioning everything. We saw the stores burned down, cars turned over, Fire trucks are not able to keep up with all of the fires. They were working serious overtime and were mentally drained, With neighboring towns of fire trucks now in the city to assist. Most of the time rioters and looters aren’t from the city, You learn that quickly when you’re a police officer. When you patrol the streets, you get a feel for people, Who they are, where they reside and a lot of the looters are from other places. The air was full of smoke from the stores that were burned down,
As business owners are trying to recover whatever is left of what they worked so hard to get. Streets and sidewalks are black from all of the smoke and fires, Military vehicles driving through the neighborhoods patrolling. Police officers in armored gear from head to toe, As protesters marched the streets chanting, “no justice, no peace.” The arrests were rampant by the officers that were armored, As nights were filled with gas bombs being thrown at the city residents. There was no control over the city and we were in the line of danger, No one was going to protect our asses either, that’s for sure. Police officers protecting private investigators that are looking into them, That’s like saying 1 + 1 = 3 knowing that’s not the right answer. People were watching us drive through the city as they protested, On major blocks and intersections blocking the traffic flow of cars. Seeing older gentlemen like us driving through their city, They were wondering what we were doing there and we got asked. If two older gentlemen are in suits, I’d question them too, We told them that we’re private investigators looking into the shooting. When people found out in the crowd of protesters, they cheered, They knew something was going to come of this case. We made our way to the scene of where the shooting occurred,
Upon getting there, we took a moment to visualize what happened. We tried to recreate the scene based on the news reports, It was hard to believe what happened and make sense of it. We started looking around to see our surroundings, Since we’re on a major street, there are cameras everywhere. These are the recordings from the city that record people’s movements, Which means we can get access to that and see what really happened. We’d also have to look into seeing if anyone recorded what occurred, There was a numbness and uneasy feeling in my gut, which means I’m onto something....
Kenny's Family and the City Want Justice
The media has been a frenzy and this has made national news, This story has traveled around the globe and has made people angry. People standing in solidarity in cities around the world was fulfilling, It made me proud to be a black man in this world. While Joe is a white Italian man, he knows of these atrocities, When he saw the corruption that infiltrated his police department, he walked away. He wasn’t willing to be apart of the fuckery that went on, in police forces, He also sacrificed his career and is doing it now as a private investigator. The media surely were capturing the riots, looting and arrests, All so they can paint a certain image and story line to fulfill their agendas. While Kenny’s family wanted us to be at their press conference, We chose to not be there as we prefer to be behind the scenes. We’ve already drawn enough attention driving through the city, Joe and I basically wanted to be incognito while we gathered all of the information about this case. When we got back to the hotel, we watched the press conference in the lobby, As we heard every voice and saw every tear shed from Kenny’s family .
Kenny’s mother was so distraught in speaking that his sister had to come and take her away, You can hear in her voice how sick and tired of the police and mistreatment of young black men and women. Kenny’s sister spoke, then his brother and closest cousin, They all shared the same sentiments of wanting justice for what happened to Kenny. They made sure to tell the world that they’ve hired private investigators, To look into what really happened and the truth will come to light. They told everyone none of what’s being reported is true and it’s all a lie, That they’re trying to paint Kenny as a thug and gangster because of the friends he had. The news didn’t know how to separate Kenny as his own man, They went as far to talk about his life as a teen and the troubles he had. The residents of this city have seen their share of wrongdoings within the police departments, This was the straw that broke the camel's back and they want justice too. All too often when people see the wrongs of police officers and report it, Nothing is done about it so to have former cops investigating this, it brought solace to the citizens of this city. The city would be full of protesters day after day as they were relentless, They spent a lot of their days at the mayor and governor’s offices. They couldn’t hide as they each had their own press conferences, As they tried to ease the tension and turmoil that infiltrated this city.
While they gave their speeches, we watched the police chief behind them, We knew some bullshit was coming as Joe and I have seen this one too many times. The police chief gave his speech and told everyone that a full investigation was conducted, That the evidence showed that this was a justified shooting. He said that Kenny had a gun and the officers feared for their lives, Which caused them to use deadly force in that situation. The outrage of people at that press conference and the city showed, Employees at the hotel we were at were appalled and shaking their heads. People have caught on to what really goes on with these cases, When people realized what we were doing, they commended us. They made us feel welcomed which was a good thing, I was starting to get tired of the cold stares and feeling uneasy.
Reviewing Evidence and Paperwork
There was a fight to get the necessary paperwork to review, Getting the pictures from the crime scene was even harder. We were given a hard time to get what we needed, This was not going to be a place where things went smoothly. It’s definitely expected and the one thing Joe doesn’t do is play around, He’s letting me control this case as this hits close to home. He’s given me the keys to the car and allowed me to drive, It’s been rocky so far but we’ll get back on track soon enough. When we started looking deeper into this, we realized these reports are off, The statements from the officers weren’t adding up at all. Each officers story depicts different things happening, One said he got out of the car and started cursing them out. Then he retreated to his car and they yelled to not do that, As one of them yelled, “gun” and they started firing gunshots. Another officer said he got out the car and raised his arms up, And started yelling at them saying, “I’m tired of y’all pulling me over.” He tells that he thought he saw a gun in the enger’s side,
As Kenny retreated to his car, he said he had a gun and they fired their weapons. The stories don’t make sense along with how the bullets hit the car, It doesn’t look like Kenny ever got out of his car in the first place. The possibility of Kenny being shot while sitting in his car was there, After the fact, they opened his car door to let him fall out to stage the scene. The car had shattered glass as if officers fired at him while he sat in his car, The trajectory of how the bullets hit his car and hit him, there are questions about that. From a former police officer’s perspective, the pictures weren’t adding up, Along with that, the pictures weren’t from all angles of the crime scene. Or were we not given all of the photos from the crime scene? Who really knows, but they’re making it harder for us to get answers. We called on a professional ballistics expert to examine the crime scene photos, To make a determination of what he feels happened that ill-fated night. We were told that Kenny was shot while he was sitting in his car, Based on the photos he looked at and looking at the recreated scene we did. The amount of gunshots fired weren’t accurate in the report, Which is making me question how many officers fired their guns. There were four men at the scene, there is no certainty how many fired, Were all of the bullet casings ed for at the scene? Granted we didn’t get everything we needed to investigate,
It set us back even more but we had the photos to look at. Next came trying to get the interviews the officers had with Internal Affairs, Another set of circumstances that we had to fight to get with the help of some people we are thankful for. When we got our hands on the interviews, we listened to them intently, One interview at a time and we took notes on what each officer said. Then we looked over the report that was given to us to see if what they said matched. We would rewind these interviews over and over again and try to catch loopholes in their stories, We were wondering how he got out of the car. Another story would be he was asked to get out of the car, So which one was it exactly? That’s the million dollar question. One story would say he got out the car angrily and berated them, Another would be he just got out and just yelled and then retreated to his car. They all would say they feared for their lives and it’s why they shot him, It seems to be the constant and consistent story in all of these shooting cases. Looking at the pictures of the gun, we needed the serial number, We wanted to know where that gun was from and if it was Kenny’s. Granted his family said he never owned any guns or let his friends in his car with one, We still have to do our due diligence on finding out who owned that gun. Looking at these pictures, the gun had the serial number scratched off,
Which is something criminals do to keep from tracking where they got the gun from. I’m starting to question a lot of things that happened that night, Joe and I were going to look into whether there was video of what happened.
Street Cameras, Body Cams and Dash Cams
Joe and I went back to the crime scene to look around, We noticed there were street cameras around the area. Now it was a matter of finding the right resources, To find that footage to see what exactly happened that night. When we ed the city to get the footage, We found out that all of the street cameras were deleted. If the media didn’t get access to it, that means one thing, All of it was deleted right away before the press found it. The story lines would tell that the street cams weren’t working, Which people of the city wouldn’t believe for not one second. The same cameras who catch criminals in the street, Somehow can’t catch police officers in the act of their crimes? That doesn’t make sense so Joe and I went in another direction, Getting the body and dash cams from the officers that night. Granted it was hell trying to gather paperwork from this case, The chances of us getting body and dash cams were a million to one. We would soon find out that the body and dash cams were deleted,
That they don’t stay in the system for a long period of time. There’s a good chance that they still have them, It’s just they won’t let us get access to what really happened. That was nothing but a lie, more reasons to cover up the truth, There was one thing we didn’t do quite yet, check social media. People who see things record them and post on their pages, There has to be people who saw what happened that night. We went onto all of the major social media websites researching, Only to be defeated in that regard because not much was there. We were wondering what would be our next move, We are being hindered from truly investigating this case. There are obstacles that we are facing but in full force, We knew what was coming but not of this magnitude. There was something sinister going on and Joe and I had to figure it out, Why the hell was the camera footage deleted from that night? There’s more to this than what happened that night, Four police officers are being protected and covered for.
Phone Logs
Since we haven’t been able to get video evidence, We decided to look into phone logs of these officers since the shooting. We were able to get access to the phone calls made and received, Now we can look deeper into what happened since that night. The first thing we noticed are the phone calls to one specific number from all of the officers, We decided to research whose number that is, it’s their commanding officer. Now we need to know why there were so many phone calls to his number, Especially when it’s a case of this magnitude and the city is reeling. There was only reason that these phone calls were made, To keep the story straight and prepare for the city to go into a frenzy. We knew not to reach out to anyone within the force regarding the case, We would be told, “no comment” we knew the deal already. Since the officers have been put on leave, they still called their commander, Which meant they were keeping in touch with him to figure out what’s next. When we compared phone calls before this shooting, The phone calls weren’t as often so we knew something was going on. If we only knew what those conversations consisted of,
We had something to start but things were about to take a turn and not necessarily for the best.
The Watchers
A 3 a.m. call to my hotel room was something I wasn’t expecting, When I answered, it was a distorted voice threatening me. Telling me to drop the investigation and to get out of town, That there was no evidence I had to prove what actually happened. He told me he has watchers on the streets watching our every move, That we weren’t safe and the citizens of the city weren’t going to protect me. I never said a word, listened to the phone call and then hung up, It was something I didn’t feel the need to entertain, I was already tired. The phone would ring a few minutes later and I disconnected the phone, Then I would start getting random phone calls to my cell phone. Solving that problem was easy as I changed the settings on my phone, Blocking any calls that weren’t in my s to go straight to voicemail. Joe told me the next morning that he got the 3 a.m. phone call too, That he had to disconnect his room phone and put his cell phone on silent. When we went out to do our work, we would see police cars behind us, Or driving alongside us just to tell us they’re watching. They figured they would try to scare us or make us uncomfortable,
It didn’t phase us, , I was attacked after I exposed the truths of my police force. They would have to do more than making obscene phone calls, And following me to see what work I’m doing, I’m built for this...
The Smoking Gun
We were in the city trying to find a good food spot, When we ran into an older gentleman who stopped us. He asked if we were the private investigators, Investigating Kenny’s case and we told him yes. He said that he needs to show us something really important, That it would change the landscape of our investigation. He asked if he showed it to us in private and we obliged, We took down his phone number and said we’d call him. This must’ve been fate, we are onto something with this case, We were wondering what this man had regarding Kenny’s death. We got something to eat, had some good Mexican food, Then called Don after we ate, that was the gentleman’s name. He told us he lived up the block and gave us his address, We went to his apartment and he had us sit at his desk. He gave us his phone and it was a recorded video of everything that happened, He literally lived right outside of the crime scene and watched everything. We were in shock of what we were actually watching,
The video was perfectly recorded, it was up close with faces and voices. As we watched, we started backtracking the paperwork we read, Of what exactly happened and occurred and knew the reports were lies. We literally watched Kenny die in front of our eyes, It's not the story that was reported on the news. They shot this young man in cold blood and without regard, Then tried to cover everything up and not face the truth. When we finished watching it, we asked Don how did he know we were working the case, He told me that word gets around this city pretty fast and he’s never seen us before. We asked to watch the video again as he connected his phone to his laptop, So we can get a broader view of the whole ordeal from that night. As we predicted Kenny never got out of his car and was shot while inside, When he was dead, they opened the car door to let him fall out of the car. The next aspect of this was seeing an officer put a glove on, Then open Kenny’s enger side of the door, what was he doing? It looks like he slips a gun on Kenny’s enger side of the car to confirm he had a gun. That confirms that Kenny was setup through the police, To make it look like he had a gun and that no one would question it. They knew there were street cameras everywhere so they had to get that deleted,
That’s easy to do and basically lie and say they’re investigating a crime and they need footage from a certain timeframe. We hear them in the video say that they need to get rid of the street cameras, As they looked around to see if anyone else was watching. Don was smart in turning off his lights in his living room, So he can record everything from his apartment building. Don was on the 3rd floor and was in perfect view of everything, He told us that officers were patrolling the area heavily after everything happened. That’s the reason why we couldn’t get access to that footage, Plus they knew everyone would want that to see what happened. Don told us the police were going around asking our whereabouts that night, Asking if anyone recorded anything and threatened people if they saw anything on social media. That explains why there were no videos on social or they were deleted right away, Even though Don said he isn’t on social media but wanted to give this video to the right people. Now you all understand why people are policing the police, Recording us and all of our actions no matter what the situation is. He handed us a flash drive of the recorded video as he saved it for us, We were so thankful for this as we will be looking at this more at the hotel. My mind was chugging away thinking to myself,
There’s no way we got everything from evidence and we needed to look at the planted gun.
Meeting With The District Attorney
It was time to meet with the district attorney, To bring to her the evidence tampering that occurred. We met at her office and told her we investigated everything, That the street cameras, body and dash cams were deleted. We showed her the video of everything that happened, As she watched it, her face was in shock and she was sick to her stomach. She asked us to rewind it to catch everything that occurred, As she watched them shoot Kenny while sitting in his car. She is now realizing this was all a cover up, That corruption has occurred and the police department didn't investigate this fully. The police chief lied on the news about it being a justified shooting, That an officer planted a gun inside of Kenny's car to justify the shooting. She was trying to process everything and had recently spoken to the police chief, Along with the higher up guys at the police department. She knew of the outrage this city has endured, That she could potentially tarnish the relationships with the police department if she prosecutes these officers.
See those are the battles that go on and the politics of the police force and the courts, It's working together and relationships that have to be established and maintained. Now comes her morals, values and that she works for the state and the citizens of the city. This was no easier for her than it was for us, To investigate our own and we told her we weren't provided everything in this case. That infuriated her even more because we are entitled to whatever we needed, Which is preventing us from solving the case in its entirety. What she did ask us is to look into the superiors of the police department, Along with the police officers involved in this case on their pasts. She needed to know what she was getting into with going after them, That she needed to get clarity on everything before arrests were made. That she is sacrificing her career and may have to move on after this case is done, There would be a tarnished relationship between her and that police department. It’s always been, “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” between police and the district attorney, It was catching criminals and making sure they went to prison. Now the roles have changed and it’s those who solve crime, committing crimes, How do we address this issue and not lose the trust of those who investigate others?
While she’s in a position of power, it’s going to become madness with these arrests, A news conference addressing the police chief’s comments and the investigation into this case. Due to us not getting everything we needed, she said she would do some leg work on her end, As she called some people in her network to get subpoenas to hand over everything regarding this case. Once this was accomplished, we were given paperwork regarding the four officers, Unfortunately, none of what Joe and I were going to see would shock us, more of appall us.
Previous Cases
When I went digging deep into what’s going on in this city, I came to find out that these officers were involved in racial situations. Two of them arrested a young black man a few years back, Then proceeded to beat him with their sticks for 10 minutes. No one saw this happen as it was on a dead end road, They took him into the back bush area and committed this heinous crime. When the young man came forward with what happened, The city kept it quiet, paid the young man off to make him go away. When we ed him, he told us he can’t discuss the case, As his payout meant he can’t speak with Joe and I. It also meant that he is never to talk about it to anyone, He can’t post anything on social media about it either. All he told us was he regrets taking the money, If he didn’t take the money, this whole situation wouldn’t have happened. Now we know part of what’s going on here and it’s not good, This is bigger than Kenny being killed, as we look into other officers in this case. Another officer causes confrontations intentionally,
To make black and latino men get angry so he has a reason to arrest them. There have been illegal pullovers of cars over the years, The problem is these officers continually got away with it. When we tried to look into that, we were turned away quickly, And told to leave it alone, go away and not cause any issues. We couldn’t get any interviews with the police chief, As we were told that he was too busy to sit down with us. Which begged to question, what the hell is going on in this city, Where cases like these get swept under the rug and never heard of. This case only got attention because of the news coverage, They pick and choose what to report to get a reaction from people. Once the reaction happens, they provide a solution, It’s what’s going on in this city and it drains me mentally. To see how these police officers here in this city abuse their power, Only for nothing to happen to them and they continually do it. This is the systemic racism that goes on, in many cities around the country, It’s not the first time this has happened and Joe and I want answers. Does the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Department of Justice know of these situations? If they do know, what didn’t they act on these heinous acts of violence by these police officers? It was time to take all that we have to their offices and bring this to their
attention, We will be going with the District Attorney for meeting with people who are in charge of these affairs. Enough is enough, it’s time for some major things to change within the police force, It’s going to start with Joe and I and hopefully it will trickle down and start reform...
Arrests Made
Justice for Kenny/Next Case
The motions to move the trial to another county were denied, Every court denied the motion and the defense attorney for these officers have to stand trial where the murder happened. They knew to find 12 jurors who didn’t know about this case, Was going to be next to impossible unless you don’t own a television. Even if you don’t own a television, you’ll find out around town, There was no way you could avoid the protests and riots, they went on daily. This would be the biggest trial in the city’s history, Where the media would be everywhere around the courthouse. Jury selection took a month alone as people wanted no parts of this case, Finding like-minded people who will be unbiased was a huge hurdle for the defense. They had to roll with the punches and the District Attorney knew what was coming, There would be a question of everyone and everything at this point. It wasn’t a surprise to me and the trial would infiltrate every television no matter where you went, It was literally nine months from the arrest to the start of the trial. Joe and I testified for the prosecution and I surely was nervous,
Then I was interrogated by the defense on my past as a police officer. They were trying to question my character and who I am, That I should be untrustworthy because of what happened when I was a cop. Hopefully the jury would see through that and not be engulfed in what was, And they focus on what’s happening now and that all officers were guilty of murder. The ballistics expert that we ed was willing to testify in court, He told his expertise that Kenny was killed sitting inside of his car. The pictures that was presented in court were more than what Joe and I received, We always knew that there were pictures we weren’t provided. During the trial, the prosecution would have citizens in the community, Who were harassed by some of the officers and they were recorded. This was all to show their characters and who they really are, It was hard for the defense to have rebuttals to what the prosecution was showing. A former police officer came out of the woodworks and testified in court, She was brave and told stories of the officers and the acts they committed while on duty. Because of us investigating this case, it brought out the truth, Along with so many people coming forward to tell their stories dealing with these officers. After 3 weeks, the trial came to an end and Joe and I were long gone from the city,
As we retreated to our homes for a while to get a break from the grind of work and travel. We did keep up with the trial and spoke with the District Attorney once a week, The goal was to get a guilty verdict and that’s all that mattered to her. It would take a day for the jury to bring back their verdict, Which was good because the longer it took, the more the prosecution worries. I was plugged to my TV as Gary Jr. was at my house, We listened to the judge read the verdicts of guilty for all officers. The guilty verdicts meant justice for Kenny, his family and friends, Along with the community and city but it was nowhere near the end. There’s a long way to go in regards to police reform and hiring practices, Also to tackle the organizations that some of these police officers are part of that control them. This is bigger than being part of the force but answering to other people, Where you have to question whether the police are protecting citizens or other people’s agendas. Joe would eventually call me to discuss the next case, Where there were bad things going on behind prison walls. There is a case we could take on and look into a prison, Of corrections officers abusing their power and abusing prisoners. It’s something that doesn’t get discussed and is kept quiet, Whatever went on behind the barbed wired walls of a state prison is to be kept quiet.
It’s hard to keep things quiet in the streets as people are constantly watching, Behind prison walls, the cameras are controlled by the corrections department and they do as they please. I knew I wanted to take on this challenge and Joe said it’s definitely worth working, That we would have the help of two corrections officers that work in the prison. We start in a week so it’s time for me to enjoy the time I have with my son, Before it’s back on the road to solve another tough case….
Sneak Peek-The Private Investigator Part 3
In the air, thousands of miles above the clouds, Looking out the window embracing the beauty of nature. Knowing this is the most I’m going to enjoy these next few weeks, As two corrections officers are waiting for us when we land. The state has called on us to investigate this prison, As prisoners are being mistreated, abused and beaten. When Joe and I landed, we rented a car once again, Drove to the hotel to stay and it was a distance from the prison. The turbulence on the airplane has me sick right now, As I’m looking at the structure of the prison in the outskirts of the city. Aerial view pictures of this prison shows it’s isolated from society, Where no one is really coming to check on the prison at all. The abuse of power has been going on for years, With a prisoner nearly dying, we were called to look into what’s going on. We were sent videos of prisoner fights that weren’t broken up, As corrections officers let them beat each other up before they broke up the fights. Videos of corrections officers turning the blind eye to what’s going,
How prisoners were handcuffed and beaten in areas where there were no cameras. Pictures of prisoners with black eyes, busted lips, jaws broken, As they’re just treated by the nurses and nothing else happens. You have to a lot of young black men in prison, Don’t have the money or resources to hire a good lawyer to represent them. These corrections officers know that and take full advantage, Now it’s catching them in the act and being sure to have them fired and arrested. It would be finding lawyers who are willing to work pro bono to help these prisoners, Who were abused at the hands of violent, dangerous corrections officers. The abuse of power continues to infiltrate blue and black uniforms, This not only goes on in the streets, but behind barbed wired, wall filled prison walls in the outskirts of American cities.... After working with the DOJ in the last case, They knew we would be good for what's going on in this prison. We met with some key representatives to discuss everything, Game plan how we were going to be looking into this case. From what we know, an inmate was killed by another inmate, There are other stories of the inmate being wrongfully killed by a corrections officer. That his death should've never happened in the first place, There are vigilante corrections officers abusing their power.
We all knew we had a role to play in this case, There are other major things going on behind these prison walls. Inhumane living conditions, constant fights, drug abuse, Horrible food, mistreatment of inmates and other activities. The main goal was to solve what happened to this inmate first, Then focus on all of the other things that are going on. Joe would be focusing on getting paperwork, I would be focused on getting videos of what's going on inside of the prison. The DOJ will be coordinating interviews with corrections officers, As we will sit in on these interviews when we visit the prison. The DOJ with Joe and I will be making an unannounced visit to the prison, Giving them no time to prepare anything before we show up. When the DOJ lines up interviews for most of the corrections department, We will know how often we will be visiting the prison. Along with that, we will be collectively interviewing prisoners, With our own federal officers and no corrections officers around. The goal is to give prisoners an opportunity to speak to us comfortably, Along with protecting them at all costs to prevent retaliation from correction officers. Local newspapers have written about what happened, It's starting to get national news since there are so many things going on in the prison.
Being in this town with Confederate flags flying, People with shotguns in the back of pickup trucks spelled trouble. The aura and feel of this place was uncomfortable, Meanwhile most of the prison population were black and latino men. Riding through town with the DOJ, we wanted to immerse ourselves with this place, Before we fully get engulfed with the madness behind these prison walls.

Learning Of A New Case
Joe and I learned of an innocent black man killed, In the hands of police officers on the street. It was a quiet night like any other night in this city, Kenny was driving and pulled over to check something. When he began driving on the road again, He was soon pulled over by cops a few blocks down. Another police car was driving along the street and stopped, To assist two partnered officers that had originally pulled Kenny over. The officers began asking questions of who he was, And where exactly was he going at that time of the night. From what Joe and I were told, Kenny got agitated, Got out of the car and confronted the officers who pulled him over. He started finger pointing at the police officers, Cursing at them and telling them he doesn’t fear them. That’s when things got out of hand and a fight ensued, Kenny retreated back to his car to try and leave. The police officers feared he had a weapon and began shooting,
Before you know it, he was dead in a pool of blood on the concrete. With gunsmoke infiltrating the muggy air of the night, Another unarmed man was killed without thought process. Joe and I looked at each other and knew something wasn’t right, Most of the story doesn’t make sense to us honestly. The city was begging and pleading for some outside forces to come investigate, That the police department didn’t do their due diligence in looking into these officers. All we knew are the officers are on paid leave, That their guns were handed in to evidence for review. Joe and I watched the news broadcasts of what was going on in the city, That there was civil unrest, anger and plenty of madness occurring. Most of what we know are based on what’s reported on the news, We knew good and well that we can’t trust anything the news says. They were reporting that they found a gun at the scene, That the police officers feared for their lives and that’s why they shot and killed Kenny. What I’ve always learned with stories is there are three sides, With this situation it was Kenny’s (which he can’t tell), the police, and the truth. We needed to know the truth and from what family are saying, None of it makes sense and that Kenny was a cool, calm, collected man. It took a lot to agitate him and that this was not the first time he was pulled over,
That he’s grown accustomed to police officers pulling him over and them trying to anger him. His cousin told us that there were times that he was in the car with Kenny, When police officers pulled him over he got tired of it and filed a harassment report on the police department. After that listening to broken hearts and minds on the phone, We collectively decided to take on the case and investigate this. I start to reflect back on my time with the police department, Thinking about the time my coworkers shot and killed the wrong man in a store robbery. It makes me think of the last moments of a man’s life as he takes his last breath, How horrific it must be to die on a street in your own neighborhood. We knew that we had to look into this case and gather all of the necessary information, So we can at least tell Kenny’s side of the story and our goal was to find out the truth in all of this. Hopefully we are right in finding out what really happened, That our minds and guts were telling us, this is far from the truth. Joe and I were on the next flight out to the city where the shooting occurred, Oh the emotions and feelings I’m going through right now.
Emotions and Feelings
Upon arriving into a different city for new case, I can’t help but to think of Gary, Jr. right now. I can’t imagine one of my own pulling him over, Feeling threatened by the color of his skin that he kills him. The city was a war zone with military officials everywhere, Tanks infiltrated the streets in a cloud of smoke and uncertainty. The smoke that filled the air were from nights of gas bombs, Being thrown toward people to calm the anger of what they’re feeling. Even as a former police officer of the law I pray for my own child, That he never has to deal with what I’ve seen and experienced myself. My badge used to save me in so many instances and situations, That won’t save any of these black and latino men who are killed at the hands of officers. There was an unsettling feeling as Joe and I rode in the cab to the hotel, My gut didn’t feel right as if something else is going to happen and turn the city upside down. As we exited the highway, we were driving along the main streets, To see stores burned down and know that business owners have nowhere to turn for income.
It saddened me and made me realize that the looting never solved any problems, It only set the city back millions and put business owners in a bad place financially, emotionally and mentally. I looked at the picture of this young man in my phone, And pondered how the hell this shit continues to happen. When we got to the hotel to get settled in, People stared at us wondering who the hell we were. They were question what the hell are we doing in this city of turmoil, Why are we in their neck of the woods as they watch our every move? This is definitely going to be a marathon with this case, Let me go call my son and tell him I love him....
Calling Gary, Jr.
When I got settled into the hotel, I dropped Gary, Jr. a text, To see if he had time to talk on the phone for a few minutes. He called me right away and never answered my text, It was so good to hear his voice as it’s getting deeper with age. He sounds so much like me at his age, it makes me laugh, We caught up for a little while and just talked about life. He asked me for advice about a girl he likes at school, I told him to not get too caught up and that mom won’t approve. He knew that and laughed at the thought of mom finding out, He knew how to be quiet about his movements so that was good and bad. He asked me what was the outcome of the last case, I told him we solved it, the officers were arrested, one helped us and got a deal out of it. I told him I’m in another city investigating the killing of a black man, By the hands of police officers a few nights ago. He already knew which case it was as he saw it posted on the internet, He made me laugh because he told me Joe and I had our work cut out for ourselves.
It’s been a long day of traveling and I’m tired but it was time to say our goodbyes, I told my son, I loved him and to be careful out there in this crazy world. To take care of mom and protect her as he’s the man of the house, To always make sure that he follows what I told him about life, morals and values. He told me he loved me and to be careful while investigating this case, That he’s happy and proud of me and my career change. As I hung up the phone, I finally realized I have someone in my corner, That fully understands why I do this work, it felt good to know that...
Meeting Kenny's Family
To meet such an amazing, gracious family, it made me emote more, As Kenny’s family reminded me of mine, close knit and loving. Shaking hands and giving hugs was something never done on private investigations, Kenny’s family were appreciative and thankful that Joe and I decided to look into their case. Kenny’s mother told us that he was a good man to everyone, That his younger years of running the streets changed when he lost friends to gun violence. She told us that granted he knew some guys in the wrong crowd, They all grew up together within the confines of these neighborhoods and streets. She said that Kenny was working in construction building homes, That he was a stand up guy and he bought himself a nice car to reward his hard work. She warned of him buying a nice car and the trouble it can cause, It wasn’t necessarily his friends she was worried about, but the police. Kenny’s cousin told us of the few times police pulled him over, And was questioned about who he is and where he was going. There were a few times where it would be the same police officers,
That they tried to agitate Kenny to have a reason to arrest them. Kenny’s cousin said that he would never jump out of his car, Risk his life to get in a cop’s face and that he had filed a complaint to the city about the police officer’s conduct toward him. He feels that this could’ve been a retaliatory ordeal between the police and Kenny, That it’s possible this could have been a vendetta against Kenny but nothing is out of bounds at this point. Kenny’s sister would share so many great stories of their childhoods, That he was her protector when it came to anything in life. She ired him for how he turned his life around and changed for the better, That he worked his ass off to be able to buy the nice car he had. She said he was making good money doing what he loved, Which was providing homes for people that they would eventually live in. He was good with his hands, it came natural to him, it was easy, He took the time to teach others and he loved helping people. Kenny knowing a few bad apples didn’t personify him and his life, That he was fighting to get the guys in the neighborhood to change their ways. Seeing the nice car Kenny was inspiring to the young men, They saw Kenny was living his life right and doing things to change their mindsets. Kenny was trying to give these young men opportunities, That’s what he was about, he just was tired of dealing with the police officers
harassing him daily. The family wanted nothing to do with the news until their press conference, Where they can speak their piece without getting anything misinterpreted. It was bad enough the news wasn’t reporting the whole story, The family knew Kenny had no gun and wasn’t retreating to get one. Everyone was saying that the gun was planted for sure, All to justify killing a young black man in America, once again. They told us that Kenny never allowed any of his friends to carry guns in his car, So the news reported he had a gun, his family knew that was far from the truth. We began to learn of who Kenny really was as a person and a man, His mother told us that sometimes he would go for late night drives to clear his mind. It was a calming factor for him and he would use that time to reflect on life, He struggled with losing his father a few years ago to cancer. He had a great bond and relationship with his father and everyone in the family, To think that Kenny was taking time out for himself to soothe his mind and ends up dying boggles my mind. The family said they don’t want this to turn into a violent ordeal of rioting and looting, That they just want to get answers and the truth on what exactly happened that night. They told us they can’t watch the news and the loopholes in what they’re reporting,
What Joe and I definitely knew, this was a city in turmoil....
Riots, Looting, and Fires
When Joe and I decided to go see the aftermath of this city, It was not surprising as we’ve dealt with this in our careers before. We had already rented a car so we can get around easier, It will make investigating this case better for us instead of cabs like we did in Europe. We were prepared for a lot of it mentally but not necessarily emotionally, Then again who can honestly prepare for something like this emotionally? This hit home for us, as I mentioned, we both have sons, So in our minds going into this, it’s questioning everything. We saw the stores burned down, cars turned over, Fire trucks are not able to keep up with all of the fires. They were working serious overtime and were mentally drained, With neighboring towns of fire trucks now in the city to assist. Most of the time rioters and looters aren’t from the city, You learn that quickly when you’re a police officer. When you patrol the streets, you get a feel for people, Who they are, where they reside and a lot of the looters are from other places. The air was full of smoke from the stores that were burned down,
As business owners are trying to recover whatever is left of what they worked so hard to get. Streets and sidewalks are black from all of the smoke and fires, Military vehicles driving through the neighborhoods patrolling. Police officers in armored gear from head to toe, As protesters marched the streets chanting, “no justice, no peace.” The arrests were rampant by the officers that were armored, As nights were filled with gas bombs being thrown at the city residents. There was no control over the city and we were in the line of danger, No one was going to protect our asses either, that’s for sure. Police officers protecting private investigators that are looking into them, That’s like saying 1 + 1 = 3 knowing that’s not the right answer. People were watching us drive through the city as they protested, On major blocks and intersections blocking the traffic flow of cars. Seeing older gentlemen like us driving through their city, They were wondering what we were doing there and we got asked. If two older gentlemen are in suits, I’d question them too, We told them that we’re private investigators looking into the shooting. When people found out in the crowd of protesters, they cheered, They knew something was going to come of this case. We made our way to the scene of where the shooting occurred,
Upon getting there, we took a moment to visualize what happened. We tried to recreate the scene based on the news reports, It was hard to believe what happened and make sense of it. We started looking around to see our surroundings, Since we’re on a major street, there are cameras everywhere. These are the recordings from the city that record people’s movements, Which means we can get access to that and see what really happened. We’d also have to look into seeing if anyone recorded what occurred, There was a numbness and uneasy feeling in my gut, which means I’m onto something....
Kenny's Family and the City Want Justice
The media has been a frenzy and this has made national news, This story has traveled around the globe and has made people angry. People standing in solidarity in cities around the world was fulfilling, It made me proud to be a black man in this world. While Joe is a white Italian man, he knows of these atrocities, When he saw the corruption that infiltrated his police department, he walked away. He wasn’t willing to be apart of the fuckery that went on, in police forces, He also sacrificed his career and is doing it now as a private investigator. The media surely were capturing the riots, looting and arrests, All so they can paint a certain image and story line to fulfill their agendas. While Kenny’s family wanted us to be at their press conference, We chose to not be there as we prefer to be behind the scenes. We’ve already drawn enough attention driving through the city, Joe and I basically wanted to be incognito while we gathered all of the information about this case. When we got back to the hotel, we watched the press conference in the lobby, As we heard every voice and saw every tear shed from Kenny’s family .
Kenny’s mother was so distraught in speaking that his sister had to come and take her away, You can hear in her voice how sick and tired of the police and mistreatment of young black men and women. Kenny’s sister spoke, then his brother and closest cousin, They all shared the same sentiments of wanting justice for what happened to Kenny. They made sure to tell the world that they’ve hired private investigators, To look into what really happened and the truth will come to light. They told everyone none of what’s being reported is true and it’s all a lie, That they’re trying to paint Kenny as a thug and gangster because of the friends he had. The news didn’t know how to separate Kenny as his own man, They went as far to talk about his life as a teen and the troubles he had. The residents of this city have seen their share of wrongdoings within the police departments, This was the straw that broke the camel's back and they want justice too. All too often when people see the wrongs of police officers and report it, Nothing is done about it so to have former cops investigating this, it brought solace to the citizens of this city. The city would be full of protesters day after day as they were relentless, They spent a lot of their days at the mayor and governor’s offices. They couldn’t hide as they each had their own press conferences, As they tried to ease the tension and turmoil that infiltrated this city.
While they gave their speeches, we watched the police chief behind them, We knew some bullshit was coming as Joe and I have seen this one too many times. The police chief gave his speech and told everyone that a full investigation was conducted, That the evidence showed that this was a justified shooting. He said that Kenny had a gun and the officers feared for their lives, Which caused them to use deadly force in that situation. The outrage of people at that press conference and the city showed, Employees at the hotel we were at were appalled and shaking their heads. People have caught on to what really goes on with these cases, When people realized what we were doing, they commended us. They made us feel welcomed which was a good thing, I was starting to get tired of the cold stares and feeling uneasy.
Reviewing Evidence and Paperwork
There was a fight to get the necessary paperwork to review, Getting the pictures from the crime scene was even harder. We were given a hard time to get what we needed, This was not going to be a place where things went smoothly. It’s definitely expected and the one thing Joe doesn’t do is play around, He’s letting me control this case as this hits close to home. He’s given me the keys to the car and allowed me to drive, It’s been rocky so far but we’ll get back on track soon enough. When we started looking deeper into this, we realized these reports are off, The statements from the officers weren’t adding up at all. Each officers story depicts different things happening, One said he got out of the car and started cursing them out. Then he retreated to his car and they yelled to not do that, As one of them yelled, “gun” and they started firing gunshots. Another officer said he got out the car and raised his arms up, And started yelling at them saying, “I’m tired of y’all pulling me over.” He tells that he thought he saw a gun in the enger’s side,
As Kenny retreated to his car, he said he had a gun and they fired their weapons. The stories don’t make sense along with how the bullets hit the car, It doesn’t look like Kenny ever got out of his car in the first place. The possibility of Kenny being shot while sitting in his car was there, After the fact, they opened his car door to let him fall out to stage the scene. The car had shattered glass as if officers fired at him while he sat in his car, The trajectory of how the bullets hit his car and hit him, there are questions about that. From a former police officer’s perspective, the pictures weren’t adding up, Along with that, the pictures weren’t from all angles of the crime scene. Or were we not given all of the photos from the crime scene? Who really knows, but they’re making it harder for us to get answers. We called on a professional ballistics expert to examine the crime scene photos, To make a determination of what he feels happened that ill-fated night. We were told that Kenny was shot while he was sitting in his car, Based on the photos he looked at and looking at the recreated scene we did. The amount of gunshots fired weren’t accurate in the report, Which is making me question how many officers fired their guns. There were four men at the scene, there is no certainty how many fired, Were all of the bullet casings ed for at the scene? Granted we didn’t get everything we needed to investigate,
It set us back even more but we had the photos to look at. Next came trying to get the interviews the officers had with Internal Affairs, Another set of circumstances that we had to fight to get with the help of some people we are thankful for. When we got our hands on the interviews, we listened to them intently, One interview at a time and we took notes on what each officer said. Then we looked over the report that was given to us to see if what they said matched. We would rewind these interviews over and over again and try to catch loopholes in their stories, We were wondering how he got out of the car. Another story would be he was asked to get out of the car, So which one was it exactly? That’s the million dollar question. One story would say he got out the car angrily and berated them, Another would be he just got out and just yelled and then retreated to his car. They all would say they feared for their lives and it’s why they shot him, It seems to be the constant and consistent story in all of these shooting cases. Looking at the pictures of the gun, we needed the serial number, We wanted to know where that gun was from and if it was Kenny’s. Granted his family said he never owned any guns or let his friends in his car with one, We still have to do our due diligence on finding out who owned that gun. Looking at these pictures, the gun had the serial number scratched off,
Which is something criminals do to keep from tracking where they got the gun from. I’m starting to question a lot of things that happened that night, Joe and I were going to look into whether there was video of what happened.
Street Cameras, Body Cams and Dash Cams
Joe and I went back to the crime scene to look around, We noticed there were street cameras around the area. Now it was a matter of finding the right resources, To find that footage to see what exactly happened that night. When we ed the city to get the footage, We found out that all of the street cameras were deleted. If the media didn’t get access to it, that means one thing, All of it was deleted right away before the press found it. The story lines would tell that the street cams weren’t working, Which people of the city wouldn’t believe for not one second. The same cameras who catch criminals in the street, Somehow can’t catch police officers in the act of their crimes? That doesn’t make sense so Joe and I went in another direction, Getting the body and dash cams from the officers that night. Granted it was hell trying to gather paperwork from this case, The chances of us getting body and dash cams were a million to one. We would soon find out that the body and dash cams were deleted,
That they don’t stay in the system for a long period of time. There’s a good chance that they still have them, It’s just they won’t let us get access to what really happened. That was nothing but a lie, more reasons to cover up the truth, There was one thing we didn’t do quite yet, check social media. People who see things record them and post on their pages, There has to be people who saw what happened that night. We went onto all of the major social media websites researching, Only to be defeated in that regard because not much was there. We were wondering what would be our next move, We are being hindered from truly investigating this case. There are obstacles that we are facing but in full force, We knew what was coming but not of this magnitude. There was something sinister going on and Joe and I had to figure it out, Why the hell was the camera footage deleted from that night? There’s more to this than what happened that night, Four police officers are being protected and covered for.
Phone Logs
Since we haven’t been able to get video evidence, We decided to look into phone logs of these officers since the shooting. We were able to get access to the phone calls made and received, Now we can look deeper into what happened since that night. The first thing we noticed are the phone calls to one specific number from all of the officers, We decided to research whose number that is, it’s their commanding officer. Now we need to know why there were so many phone calls to his number, Especially when it’s a case of this magnitude and the city is reeling. There was only reason that these phone calls were made, To keep the story straight and prepare for the city to go into a frenzy. We knew not to reach out to anyone within the force regarding the case, We would be told, “no comment” we knew the deal already. Since the officers have been put on leave, they still called their commander, Which meant they were keeping in touch with him to figure out what’s next. When we compared phone calls before this shooting, The phone calls weren’t as often so we knew something was going on. If we only knew what those conversations consisted of,
We had something to start but things were about to take a turn and not necessarily for the best.
The Watchers
A 3 a.m. call to my hotel room was something I wasn’t expecting, When I answered, it was a distorted voice threatening me. Telling me to drop the investigation and to get out of town, That there was no evidence I had to prove what actually happened. He told me he has watchers on the streets watching our every move, That we weren’t safe and the citizens of the city weren’t going to protect me. I never said a word, listened to the phone call and then hung up, It was something I didn’t feel the need to entertain, I was already tired. The phone would ring a few minutes later and I disconnected the phone, Then I would start getting random phone calls to my cell phone. Solving that problem was easy as I changed the settings on my phone, Blocking any calls that weren’t in my s to go straight to voicemail. Joe told me the next morning that he got the 3 a.m. phone call too, That he had to disconnect his room phone and put his cell phone on silent. When we went out to do our work, we would see police cars behind us, Or driving alongside us just to tell us they’re watching. They figured they would try to scare us or make us uncomfortable,
It didn’t phase us, , I was attacked after I exposed the truths of my police force. They would have to do more than making obscene phone calls, And following me to see what work I’m doing, I’m built for this...
The Smoking Gun
We were in the city trying to find a good food spot, When we ran into an older gentleman who stopped us. He asked if we were the private investigators, Investigating Kenny’s case and we told him yes. He said that he needs to show us something really important, That it would change the landscape of our investigation. He asked if he showed it to us in private and we obliged, We took down his phone number and said we’d call him. This must’ve been fate, we are onto something with this case, We were wondering what this man had regarding Kenny’s death. We got something to eat, had some good Mexican food, Then called Don after we ate, that was the gentleman’s name. He told us he lived up the block and gave us his address, We went to his apartment and he had us sit at his desk. He gave us his phone and it was a recorded video of everything that happened, He literally lived right outside of the crime scene and watched everything. We were in shock of what we were actually watching,
The video was perfectly recorded, it was up close with faces and voices. As we watched, we started backtracking the paperwork we read, Of what exactly happened and occurred and knew the reports were lies. We literally watched Kenny die in front of our eyes, It's not the story that was reported on the news. They shot this young man in cold blood and without regard, Then tried to cover everything up and not face the truth. When we finished watching it, we asked Don how did he know we were working the case, He told me that word gets around this city pretty fast and he’s never seen us before. We asked to watch the video again as he connected his phone to his laptop, So we can get a broader view of the whole ordeal from that night. As we predicted Kenny never got out of his car and was shot while inside, When he was dead, they opened the car door to let him fall out of the car. The next aspect of this was seeing an officer put a glove on, Then open Kenny’s enger side of the door, what was he doing? It looks like he slips a gun on Kenny’s enger side of the car to confirm he had a gun. That confirms that Kenny was setup through the police, To make it look like he had a gun and that no one would question it. They knew there were street cameras everywhere so they had to get that deleted,
That’s easy to do and basically lie and say they’re investigating a crime and they need footage from a certain timeframe. We hear them in the video say that they need to get rid of the street cameras, As they looked around to see if anyone else was watching. Don was smart in turning off his lights in his living room, So he can record everything from his apartment building. Don was on the 3rd floor and was in perfect view of everything, He told us that officers were patrolling the area heavily after everything happened. That’s the reason why we couldn’t get access to that footage, Plus they knew everyone would want that to see what happened. Don told us the police were going around asking our whereabouts that night, Asking if anyone recorded anything and threatened people if they saw anything on social media. That explains why there were no videos on social or they were deleted right away, Even though Don said he isn’t on social media but wanted to give this video to the right people. Now you all understand why people are policing the police, Recording us and all of our actions no matter what the situation is. He handed us a flash drive of the recorded video as he saved it for us, We were so thankful for this as we will be looking at this more at the hotel. My mind was chugging away thinking to myself,
There’s no way we got everything from evidence and we needed to look at the planted gun.
Meeting With The District Attorney
It was time to meet with the district attorney, To bring to her the evidence tampering that occurred. We met at her office and told her we investigated everything, That the street cameras, body and dash cams were deleted. We showed her the video of everything that happened, As she watched it, her face was in shock and she was sick to her stomach. She asked us to rewind it to catch everything that occurred, As she watched them shoot Kenny while sitting in his car. She is now realizing this was all a cover up, That corruption has occurred and the police department didn't investigate this fully. The police chief lied on the news about it being a justified shooting, That an officer planted a gun inside of Kenny's car to justify the shooting. She was trying to process everything and had recently spoken to the police chief, Along with the higher up guys at the police department. She knew of the outrage this city has endured, That she could potentially tarnish the relationships with the police department if she prosecutes these officers.
See those are the battles that go on and the politics of the police force and the courts, It's working together and relationships that have to be established and maintained. Now comes her morals, values and that she works for the state and the citizens of the city. This was no easier for her than it was for us, To investigate our own and we told her we weren't provided everything in this case. That infuriated her even more because we are entitled to whatever we needed, Which is preventing us from solving the case in its entirety. What she did ask us is to look into the superiors of the police department, Along with the police officers involved in this case on their pasts. She needed to know what she was getting into with going after them, That she needed to get clarity on everything before arrests were made. That she is sacrificing her career and may have to move on after this case is done, There would be a tarnished relationship between her and that police department. It’s always been, “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” between police and the district attorney, It was catching criminals and making sure they went to prison. Now the roles have changed and it’s those who solve crime, committing crimes, How do we address this issue and not lose the trust of those who investigate others?
While she’s in a position of power, it’s going to become madness with these arrests, A news conference addressing the police chief’s comments and the investigation into this case. Due to us not getting everything we needed, she said she would do some leg work on her end, As she called some people in her network to get subpoenas to hand over everything regarding this case. Once this was accomplished, we were given paperwork regarding the four officers, Unfortunately, none of what Joe and I were going to see would shock us, more of appall us.
Previous Cases
When I went digging deep into what’s going on in this city, I came to find out that these officers were involved in racial situations. Two of them arrested a young black man a few years back, Then proceeded to beat him with their sticks for 10 minutes. No one saw this happen as it was on a dead end road, They took him into the back bush area and committed this heinous crime. When the young man came forward with what happened, The city kept it quiet, paid the young man off to make him go away. When we ed him, he told us he can’t discuss the case, As his payout meant he can’t speak with Joe and I. It also meant that he is never to talk about it to anyone, He can’t post anything on social media about it either. All he told us was he regrets taking the money, If he didn’t take the money, this whole situation wouldn’t have happened. Now we know part of what’s going on here and it’s not good, This is bigger than Kenny being killed, as we look into other officers in this case. Another officer causes confrontations intentionally,
To make black and latino men get angry so he has a reason to arrest them. There have been illegal pullovers of cars over the years, The problem is these officers continually got away with it. When we tried to look into that, we were turned away quickly, And told to leave it alone, go away and not cause any issues. We couldn’t get any interviews with the police chief, As we were told that he was too busy to sit down with us. Which begged to question, what the hell is going on in this city, Where cases like these get swept under the rug and never heard of. This case only got attention because of the news coverage, They pick and choose what to report to get a reaction from people. Once the reaction happens, they provide a solution, It’s what’s going on in this city and it drains me mentally. To see how these police officers here in this city abuse their power, Only for nothing to happen to them and they continually do it. This is the systemic racism that goes on, in many cities around the country, It’s not the first time this has happened and Joe and I want answers. Does the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Department of Justice know of these situations? If they do know, what didn’t they act on these heinous acts of violence by these police officers? It was time to take all that we have to their offices and bring this to their
attention, We will be going with the District Attorney for meeting with people who are in charge of these affairs. Enough is enough, it’s time for some major things to change within the police force, It’s going to start with Joe and I and hopefully it will trickle down and start reform...
Arrests Made
Justice for Kenny/Next Case
The motions to move the trial to another county were denied, Every court denied the motion and the defense attorney for these officers have to stand trial where the murder happened. They knew to find 12 jurors who didn’t know about this case, Was going to be next to impossible unless you don’t own a television. Even if you don’t own a television, you’ll find out around town, There was no way you could avoid the protests and riots, they went on daily. This would be the biggest trial in the city’s history, Where the media would be everywhere around the courthouse. Jury selection took a month alone as people wanted no parts of this case, Finding like-minded people who will be unbiased was a huge hurdle for the defense. They had to roll with the punches and the District Attorney knew what was coming, There would be a question of everyone and everything at this point. It wasn’t a surprise to me and the trial would infiltrate every television no matter where you went, It was literally nine months from the arrest to the start of the trial. Joe and I testified for the prosecution and I surely was nervous,
Then I was interrogated by the defense on my past as a police officer. They were trying to question my character and who I am, That I should be untrustworthy because of what happened when I was a cop. Hopefully the jury would see through that and not be engulfed in what was, And they focus on what’s happening now and that all officers were guilty of murder. The ballistics expert that we ed was willing to testify in court, He told his expertise that Kenny was killed sitting inside of his car. The pictures that was presented in court were more than what Joe and I received, We always knew that there were pictures we weren’t provided. During the trial, the prosecution would have citizens in the community, Who were harassed by some of the officers and they were recorded. This was all to show their characters and who they really are, It was hard for the defense to have rebuttals to what the prosecution was showing. A former police officer came out of the woodworks and testified in court, She was brave and told stories of the officers and the acts they committed while on duty. Because of us investigating this case, it brought out the truth, Along with so many people coming forward to tell their stories dealing with these officers. After 3 weeks, the trial came to an end and Joe and I were long gone from the city,
As we retreated to our homes for a while to get a break from the grind of work and travel. We did keep up with the trial and spoke with the District Attorney once a week, The goal was to get a guilty verdict and that’s all that mattered to her. It would take a day for the jury to bring back their verdict, Which was good because the longer it took, the more the prosecution worries. I was plugged to my TV as Gary Jr. was at my house, We listened to the judge read the verdicts of guilty for all officers. The guilty verdicts meant justice for Kenny, his family and friends, Along with the community and city but it was nowhere near the end. There’s a long way to go in regards to police reform and hiring practices, Also to tackle the organizations that some of these police officers are part of that control them. This is bigger than being part of the force but answering to other people, Where you have to question whether the police are protecting citizens or other people’s agendas. Joe would eventually call me to discuss the next case, Where there were bad things going on behind prison walls. There is a case we could take on and look into a prison, Of corrections officers abusing their power and abusing prisoners. It’s something that doesn’t get discussed and is kept quiet, Whatever went on behind the barbed wired walls of a state prison is to be kept quiet.
It’s hard to keep things quiet in the streets as people are constantly watching, Behind prison walls, the cameras are controlled by the corrections department and they do as they please. I knew I wanted to take on this challenge and Joe said it’s definitely worth working, That we would have the help of two corrections officers that work in the prison. We start in a week so it’s time for me to enjoy the time I have with my son, Before it’s back on the road to solve another tough case….
Sneak Peek-The Private Investigator Part 3
In the air, thousands of miles above the clouds, Looking out the window embracing the beauty of nature. Knowing this is the most I’m going to enjoy these next few weeks, As two corrections officers are waiting for us when we land. The state has called on us to investigate this prison, As prisoners are being mistreated, abused and beaten. When Joe and I landed, we rented a car once again, Drove to the hotel to stay and it was a distance from the prison. The turbulence on the airplane has me sick right now, As I’m looking at the structure of the prison in the outskirts of the city. Aerial view pictures of this prison shows it’s isolated from society, Where no one is really coming to check on the prison at all. The abuse of power has been going on for years, With a prisoner nearly dying, we were called to look into what’s going on. We were sent videos of prisoner fights that weren’t broken up, As corrections officers let them beat each other up before they broke up the fights. Videos of corrections officers turning the blind eye to what’s going,
How prisoners were handcuffed and beaten in areas where there were no cameras. Pictures of prisoners with black eyes, busted lips, jaws broken, As they’re just treated by the nurses and nothing else happens. You have to a lot of young black men in prison, Don’t have the money or resources to hire a good lawyer to represent them. These corrections officers know that and take full advantage, Now it’s catching them in the act and being sure to have them fired and arrested. It would be finding lawyers who are willing to work pro bono to help these prisoners, Who were abused at the hands of violent, dangerous corrections officers. The abuse of power continues to infiltrate blue and black uniforms, This not only goes on in the streets, but behind barbed wired, wall filled prison walls in the outskirts of American cities.... After working with the DOJ in the last case, They knew we would be good for what's going on in this prison. We met with some key representatives to discuss everything, Game plan how we were going to be looking into this case. From what we know, an inmate was killed by another inmate, There are other stories of the inmate being wrongfully killed by a corrections officer. That his death should've never happened in the first place, There are vigilante corrections officers abusing their power.
We all knew we had a role to play in this case, There are other major things going on behind these prison walls. Inhumane living conditions, constant fights, drug abuse, Horrible food, mistreatment of inmates and other activities. The main goal was to solve what happened to this inmate first, Then focus on all of the other things that are going on. Joe would be focusing on getting paperwork, I would be focused on getting videos of what's going on inside of the prison. The DOJ will be coordinating interviews with corrections officers, As we will sit in on these interviews when we visit the prison. The DOJ with Joe and I will be making an unannounced visit to the prison, Giving them no time to prepare anything before we show up. When the DOJ lines up interviews for most of the corrections department, We will know how often we will be visiting the prison. Along with that, we will be collectively interviewing prisoners, With our own federal officers and no corrections officers around. The goal is to give prisoners an opportunity to speak to us comfortably, Along with protecting them at all costs to prevent retaliation from correction officers. Local newspapers have written about what happened, It's starting to get national news since there are so many things going on in the prison.
Being in this town with Confederate flags flying, People with shotguns in the back of pickup trucks spelled trouble. The aura and feel of this place was uncomfortable, Meanwhile most of the prison population were black and latino men. Riding through town with the DOJ, we wanted to immerse ourselves with this place, Before we fully get engulfed with the madness behind these prison walls.
