La copertina Il titolo e il disegno scelti per la copertina di questo libro sono dovuti a una piccola storia di coincidenze. Quando uscì la prima traduzione italiana del “Libro del desiderio” di Leonard Cohen, io non ne sapevo nulla. Ho poi scoperto il libro solo alcuni anni dopo, colpita, prima di tutto, oltre che dal titolo e dall’autore, da quella strana immagine di uccello dolce e silente, disegnata dallo stesso Leonard (tutto il libro è pieno dei suoi notevoli disegni, ma quell’uccello è semplicemente magico). Infine un giorno, per caso, frugando tra vecchi scritti, ho trovato il mio curioso schizzo di un misterioso uccello canterino su un ramo a cui era appesa una chitarra, con una data (Dicembre 2007), ed un titolo: “Canto di Natale sotto luna d’Oriente”… Quel disegno non poteva che essere l’inevitabile copertina di questo libro… che è poi diventato “Il canto del desiderio”. Ancora una parola su questo titolo che, mentre annuncia il canto di un uccello, può essere letto nel doppio senso: è il canto dedicato al desiderio o è lo stesso desiderio che canta? Ed inoltre può giocare anche sul doppio significato della parola italiana ‘canto’, che significa anche ‘angolo’ (ma nella traduzione ho dovuto fare una scelta). Infatti, questo libro è comunque proprio un angolo, un piccolo punto di osservazione da cui io guardo il mondo, mentre sono sulla strada con un poeta.

I have to say I did not get to know about the coming of the Leonard Cohen’s book “Book of Longing”, in its Italian version, until I bought it some years later. Rather than by its title and its author, I was primarily stuck, in it, by the odd enough representation of a bird, so sweet and silent in its composure, actually drawn by Leonard himself (the book contains plenty of his remarkable sketches and, indeed, the one of this bird does appear simply charming). One day, while leafing through my own writings, by chance I found a quaint sketch of mine featuring a song bird perched on a tree branch, close to a guitar hanging along down, with underneath the date: “December 2007” and the title: “Christmas song under Eastern moon”…. then, from here, the book “Song of longing” with its inevitable cover has originated. Regarding the title, it may for the song of a bird and at the same time, bear a double meaning: might it be a song to dedicate to the longing, or the longing itself singing out? Moreover, a word play lies in the Italian term ‘canto’ and corresponding to the English ‘nook’ (but, having to make a choice, it does not appear in the title). In fact I can define this ‘book’ as a ‘nook’, that is a small observation post from which I let myself look upon the world, while proceeding along a road with a poet.

Questo libro è un tentativo di ricerca poetica che nasce da un incontro spirituale. è il frutto di un percorso che sperimenta e confronta parole ed emozioni, ando anche per l’idea inconsueta di una doppia traduzione, nel corso di un anno del tutto speciale, illuminato dalle tracce stellari di uno dei più grandi poeti e musicisti del nostro tempo. Con lui è avvenuto l’incontro folgorante sulla via di Damasco, che in questo caso si chiama Verona, ovvero il luogo, nel settembre 2012, del suo unico concerto italiano. Un luogo sensibile, ma sicuramente magico, per collocare un evento altrettanto magico e straordinario, che ho condiviso con qualche migliaio di altre persone, come me perdutamente innamorate della sua poesia in musica. Se è vero dunque che abbiamo bisogno di luoghi speciali dove possano brillare le nostre esperienze più profonde, Verona è stato per me un luogo unico. Qui, dunque, nella città immortalata dall’eterno mito di Romeo e Giulietta, nell’incantato scenario dell’Arena sono stata a pochi metri di distanza da un altro luminoso mito, che ha saputo dare una svolta incisiva alla mia ricerca sulla via della Bellezza. Mentre lo ascoltavo in compagnia dei miei studenti, come me assorti, che avevo voluto portare con me per instillare loro l’entusiasmo per la poesia, ero convinta che lui sapesse che ero lì, tanto mi sentivo in profonda sintonia con lui. Mister Kory, il suo attento manager, a cui pure avevo mandato alcuni testi perché glieli trasmettesse, pur se gentile e tempestivo nel rispondermi, era stato fermo: non era possibile alcun contatto diretto né prima né dopo il concerto. Ok, mister Kory, sarà per un’altra volta…! Lei è una persona squisita, e so che è stato sincero quando mi ha scritto:

“Yes, I forwarded the poetry to Leonard. And delighted to hear that you will be able to attend the Verona concert.” Ma chi era “delighted” – ho tormentato mia figlia – Kory o Leonard? – e lei sorridendo ha risposto: “… Leonard, of course”. Al posto di questa introduzione avrei potuto scrivere un racconto sulle cosiddette “coincidenze non-coincidenze” (Jung le chiama “sincronicità”) che mi sono capitate in poco più di un anno e che hanno favorito in tutti i modi quello che in una mia poesia chiamo l’incontro-non incontro con colui che è diventato per me, in brevissimo tempo, una guida spirituale (o poetica, è lo stesso). In effetti il racconto si nasconde e si rivela nelle poesie, attraversandolo; per chi vuole cercarlo, è un racconto fatto di stati d’animo non sempre uguali, interrotti da suggestioni più intense, talvolta surreali, come quelle avvertite in un altro luogo magico che si chiama Grecia, cuore del mio Mediterraneo, a cui l’anima di Leonard Cohen appartiene nel suo sentire profondo. Immagino che Leonard non si entusiasmi nel sentirsi chiamare “maestro”, eppure mi piacerebbe riuscire a convincerlo che per me è stato davvero tale, ma se preferisce posso dire che è stato una fiamma, anzi un “roveto ardente” per usare l’espressione biblica che è anche il mio ultimo titolo di questa raccolta. Sono certa che lui capirà quello che voglio dire, se mai questo libro riuscirà ad arrivare nelle sue mani. Platone, nel “Fedro”, tra le quattro forme di follia, con il delirio, la profezia e l’amore, colloca la poesia visionaria. Qui vorrebbero esserci tutte e quattro. Ma c’è sicuramente l’amore, che è in ultimo ricerca, tramite il poeta visionario, di quello che io chiamo Dio; per Leonard Cohen, meraviglioso ebreo rimasto tale nonostante nove anni di percorso buddista, è Colui che corrisponde a una stupenda parola da lui usata: The Nameless. A una canzone in cui ne parla, che io amo molto (“Love Itself”), e che tuttavia non ha cantato al concerto, ho dedicato un mio piccolo commento in versi. Questo libro, nel suo piccolo, vuole essere infatti anche uno strano incontro ecumenico con un “fratello maggiore”, per usare una felice espressione che fu di Giovanni Paolo II. Sui confini tra due fedi così strettamente legate c’è per Leonard anche la Madonna, vestita d’azzurra acqua gelata*, in qualche modo la figura femminile ideale da sempre cercata, e qualcosa di più, io credo. Tornando a Verona, volevo solo dire ancora che tutte le poesie qui “raccontate” ruotano intorno a quel momento “sospeso” in cui Leonard è stato proprio “così

vicino / e irraggiungibile / a due i d’acrobata, quasi un volo interstellare” (penso che molte delle persone che erano lì in quella notte straordinaria lo abbiano sentito in questo modo ed abbiano avuto voglia di volare ad abbracciarlo per quello che stava facendo per tutti noi). è certo che io ho scritto, per un anno, le mie poesie, in modo più o meno direttamente ispirate da quella luce, dai suoi testi, nel sottofondo di una musica che è veramente così vicina alla bellezza perfetta da sconvolgere l’anima. Il mio primo amore intellettuale, come ho fatto intendere, è stato Platone. Forse con lui ho immaginato il mio primo ballo nel vasto atrio dello spirito, con lui ho intrapreso, dal punto di vista dell’ ascesi filosofica, l’idea della Bellezza, quella che soltanto come diceva Dostoevskij (un ballo bellissimo me l’ha concesso anche lui , con l’ “Idiota”) potrà salvare il mondo. A quindici anni però ascoltavo già ossessivamente “Giovanna d’Arco”, nella bella traduzione italiana di Fabrizio De André. E mi immedesimavo in quella fragile e forte figurina eroica che bruciava d’amore, il mio primo “roveto ardente”:

“Anche io vorrei luce ed amore / ma se arriva deve essere sempre così crudele e accecante.”…

Solo più tardi ho scoperto che nell’originale di Leonard, quell’ultima frase non era un’affermazione ma un inquieto interrogativo:

“but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?”

Da allora è ata tanta acqua e non poca sofferenza sotto i ponti. La mia scrittura tuttavia si era come un po’ arenata nelle secche di una invisibile depressione. E dopo tanti anni Leonard Cohen, uscito ormai dalla sua depressione, aspettava che mi decidessi ad invitarlo a un ballo. Ed io lo faccio ora con questo libro.

Sicuramente è lui che mi invita tutte le volte in cui mi ritrovo immersa nella sua poesia, a cominciare dai suoi libri che ho sparsi per tutta la casa, con un posto d’onore per quella meraviglia che è stato per me “Il libro del desiderio”, sempre sul comodino. E soprattutto l’invito al ballo è ancora la sua musica, o meglio la sua poesia in musica, colonna sonora che ha accompagnato questa scrittura, che è il mio segno di gratitudine per un concerto indescrivibile, dove il ballo è stato davvero il filo conduttore. E grazie anche per l’ultima canzone, Leonard. Questo è solo l’inizio del percorso. The inspiration

This work wants to be an attempt of poetic research: born out a spiritual encounter, it is the result of a process aimed at experimenting and comparing together words and emotions, also providing, in an unusual way, a translation of verses in two languages of one of the most outstanding poets and musicians of our time. All being accomplished in a yearlong period, brightly enlightened by his star traces. With him I had the dazzling encounter on the road to Damascus, namely in this case Verona, the venue of his only Italian concert in September 2012. It is a sensible yet magic place, as extraordinary and magic as the event itself, which I could enjoy with thousands of people, really enraptured by his poetry set in music. It is true, we do need peculiar settings where our deepest experiences may shine and Verona was utterly unique to me. In this town, immortalized by the eternal myth of Juliet and her Romeo, in the sublime scenery of the Arena, I could sit very close to another myth, actually so effective to be a turning point in my pursuit of beauty. While there, as I was listening to his songs, totally attuned to them and to him, in company with my students, on purpose taken there to arouse enthusiasm towards poetry, I thought he could even have perceived my presence nearby.

Mister Kory, his caring manager, the person I had sent some texts of mine so as to be handed over to him , politely but firmly answered that no direct would have been possible before and after the concert. “Ok, Mr Kory, next time, then...! I see you are a kind person, and you were honest when you wrote: “Yes, I forwarded the poetry to Leonard. And delighted to hear that you will be able to attend the Verona concert.” But who got ‘delighted’? Kory or Leonard? – I repeatedly asked my daughter – And she said to me, smiling “...Leonard, of course!” Instead of writing this introduction I might have written a personal story about the so-called “coincidences/non-coincidences” (As Jung called “synchronic incidents”) that occurred to me in a year’s time and giving me the chance of what I call in one poem: encounter/non-encounter, precisely with the one who shortly became my spiritual guide (also poetic one, but it is the same thing). In reality, the whole story is hidden and revealed, too, in the texture of his poems. Whoever in search of it, may find a narration made of states of mind, uneven quite often, now and then intermingled with highly intense impressions, also surreal as the ones I sensed in Greece, another magic place, at the heart of my Mediterranean and which Leonard feels he belongs to, in his inner self. I guess he would not appreciate being called “Master”, but I fancy being able to convince him that he was as such. Otherwise I dare define him a flame, a “burning bush”, just to use a biblical phrase and which is also the title given to this collection. I know he will understand what I mean , could this book get to him. According to Plato, in “Fedro”, visionary poetry is one of the four forms of folly, together with delirium, prophecy, love. I want all of them to be present here, but surely ‘love’ must be, which is ultimately, through the visionary poet, the search of, as I call it, God; for Leonard Cohen, an extraordinary, faithful Jew despite his nine yearlong Buddhism experience, it is he who coincides with what he calls Nameless, wonderful word he commonly uses, perhaps created by him. I have dedicated my own commentary in verse to one of my most favourite among his songs (‘Love itself’, not sung over the concert), where he makes reference to this word.

This work, in its own small, wants to be an unusual ecumenical encounter with an ‘elder brother’, so as to use an appropriate expression from Johannes Paulus II. Along the borderline between two confessions, so closely related to each other, Leonard would also place the Virgin Mary, clad in icy blue water in a way, the female figure ever sought for or may be more than that, I think. * Back to Verona, I have to say that the poems here narrated evolve around the ‘bated’ moment in which Leonard was so close to me, even unattainable, in ‘two steps of acrobat’s distance’, suspended in an interstellar flight (I presume the many people attending the concert on that amazing night wanted to dash forward to embrace him, grateful for what he was offering us). For a whole year I have written poems, inspired by his light, by his lyrics, also indirectly, accompanied by a tune which is so perfect in its beauty to shatter the soul. My first intellectual love , as I hinted at before, was and has been Plato. Perhaps with him I could imagine my opening dance to the vast atrium of the spirit, from him I acknowledged the idea of beauty, from the point of view of the philosophical ascesis , the one that, as Dostoevskij would say, could save the world (he, too, invited me to dance with “The Idiot”) At the age of five, however, I would obsessively listen to “Jean D’Arc”, in the superb Italian version of Fabrizio De André. I would identify myself with that frail and strong heroic figure dying for love, my very first ‘burning bush’.

Only later I found out the last part of this phrase in the original lyric by Leonard Cohen, but it sounded like a troubled doubt, not an assertion:

“…but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?”

A lot of water has ed under the bridge since then. My writings first got stuck on the arid shores of an invisible depression. After many years Leonard Cohen, once recovered from his own depression, waited for me to dance together and now it is me who wants to do it with him through this work. Surely he invites me to dance whenever I plunge myself in the reading of his poems , his books mainly, that I have all scattered around my home, except one, the extraordinary “The book of longing” I always, eagerly keep on my bedside table. His music or better his poetry set in music, is the real invitation to a dance, the soundtrack that has been the precious companion to my writing , which is actually my mark of gratitude for that astonishing concert where dancing was the underlying theme. Thank you, Leonard, and above all for the last song. I like thinking that this is only the beginning along a route to follow further on.

Un omaggio alla poesia in musica di Leonard Cohen Una maggiore attenzione ai testi della poesia di Leonard Cohen che si fa musica, è il messaggio che vorrei infine trasmettere con le tre preziose lyrics che qui propongo, a conclusione della mia piccola ricerca personale. Dopo la traduzione in inglese dei miei testi secondo un percorso per lo più immediato e intuitivo, dunque la situazione si capovolge ed io comincio ora a tradurre i testi d’Autore nella mia lingua… Un compito solo apparentemente più facile e con una maggiore responsabilità, sull’esempio del grande De André: l’impegno di salvaguardare, nella traduzione, non tanto la precisione formale, quanto il senso profondo della poesia, mantenendone il più possibile intatta l’eccezionale musicalità. Per amore dei testi di Leonard Cohen (e della mia lingua) ho cercato di riuscirci al

meglio. Qui mi sono dedicata ai tre testi che più hanno parlato a me e che, in qualche strano modo, insieme ad altre suggestioni, si sono intrecciati ai miei versi (altri misteriosi richiami li lascio ai più attenti lettori di Leonard). Sono tre canzoni, tre stupende poesie messe in musica, che fanno capo a tre periodi diversi della vita dell’artista, forse tre momenti fondamentali di un cammino spirituale. “Take this waltz”, del 1988, è un omaggio a Garcia Lorca (un amore condiviso, al quale ho dedicato un mio testo nella prima parte), una splendida rielaborazione in musica dello già straordinario “Pequeno vals vienés”. Una meditazione incredibilmente bella e tragica si intreccia una fantastica danza di amore e morte, che infine diventa un dono per la vita, per tutti noi. Ed è forse è il momento della più intensa sofferenza.

“Love Itself” è del 2001, e non è stata cantata al concerto, ma è un capolavoro di leggerezza e profondità; si immerge nella polvere impalpabile dell’immagine dell’Io che si incontra col divino, nel momento in cui, ando per l’amore, si dimentica di sé. La via del buddismo è qui già percorsa dall’ebreo che rimane comunque fedele alla religione dei suoi padri. Amen è del 2012. La luce di Old Ideas, l’ultimo album, più di tutti pervaso dalla dimensione religiosa, si concentra su una preghiera toccante, quasi sussurrata, personalissima e insieme universale, cantata in ginocchio. Non si può che rimanere in ascolto, stupiti del mistero di una fede sempre antica e sempre nuova (come direbbe S.Agostino), esente da ogni moralismo. Fra trasgressione e umiltà, è il raggiungimento delle vette di una grande poesia che incontra oggi il misticismo più profondo. Grazie ancora, Leonard. A praising homage to Leonard Cohen‘s poetry set in music In conclusion, at the end of my small personal research, what I intend to transmit to any careful reader is the relevance here given to Leonard Cohen’s

lyrics, especially three of them. After providing the translation into English of my texts (taking inspiration from his own), according to a quite intuitive and immediate criterion, I found the whole situation unexpectedly subverted: getting myself to translate into my mother tongue Leonard Cohen’s verses, born to be set in music. It is a task which is not easy at all, furthermore it implies a greater responsibility, on the example of the great De André: rather than to be formally accurate, you are supposed not to betray, while translating, the real meaning of the poetic message and you are bound to maintain its unique musicality intact. With due respect to Leonard Cohen’s art (and my own language), I have endeavoured to do my best. Therefore I have first presented these three texts I feel closer to, and that, oddly enough, I found emotionally intertwined with my own verses (I leave the other mysterious references to the most attentive readers of Leonard). These three extraordinary lyrics refer to three different stages in the artist’s life, probably three relevant periods over a spiritual, intense and rough living course. “Take this waltz” (1988) is a homage to Garcia Lorca (a love we have in common , to whom I dedicated one of my poems) an excellent reworking in music of the former renown “Pequeno vals vienés”, incredibly moving and tragic, interwoven with the theme of the love – death dance and which eventually turns itself into a gift for life. This could have been the moment of his utmost suffering “Love Itself” (2001) it is a masterpiece for its lightness and depth, immersed in the intangible image of the Self , ready to reach the Divine just when , enthralled by love, inevitably loses himself. The road to Buddhism is here run through by the Jewish who will ever honour, as he says, the Forefathers’ belief. “Amen” (2012): the light of “Old Ideas”, the last album, more than others imbued with religious feeling and basing itself on a touching prayer, almost whispered, is so personal and universal to be, performed on stage physically knelt down. We have but to listen attentively, astounded by the mystery of an old and renewed Beauty (to quote St.Augustin), free from any moralizing intent. So his poetry reaches its highest peaks, full of deep mysticism, ing today through transgression, humbleness and desperate quest for love.
